FROM THE

PRINCIPAL When I was seven years old, my mom bought me personalized stationery and taught me how to write a thank-you note. First, say thank you for the gift. Then, explain how I will use this gift. Next, tell the person how grateful I am for the generosity. Finally, let the person know how much I love him or her. It was good advice. Gibbons consistently uses the hashtag, #gibbonsgrateful, to thank our students who commit themselves to academics, faith, leadership, and service; our educators who dedicate their lives to teaching and engaging with their students; and our families who enhance Gibbons with their experience and find joy in the mission-driven opportunities the school offers. This annual report also is an expression of our gratitude. It acknowledges all the people committed to ensuring our school has the resources to provide our students, educators, and families with every opportunity to engage with our mission. This year we finished renovating our Short Journey Retreat Center, which opened in the spring and is home to a flourishing retreat program that continues to grow with added spiritual retreats for each grade level. It also will host our Gibbons Leadership Conference, retreats for athletic and co-curricular teams, Gibbons educators, the Gibbons Family Association, and more. Your generosity also enabled our Robotics team to build a Mars Rover. Our educators attended professional development conferences to enhance our teaching of Advanced Placement courses, integration of technology, and pedagogical implementation. Our athletic programs benefited with improved facilities, including a new batting cage, and there are plans to renovate the stadiumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s track and turf. Many classrooms and common areas have new furniture that supports collaborative learning experiences, and our original rehearsal space will gain a new floor to accommodate our thriving dance and choral programs. On any given day, visitors witness students, educators, and parents using these and other resources to engage with each other. Y E A R I N R E VI E W We are an academic community within a faith community. Our Catholic character informs all that we do, shapes the spirit with which we engage one another, and results in joy. It is also the culture at the heart of the Gibbons experience in classes, teams, and all school events. It is an inextricable part of our identity. Examples of living out our faith abounded this year. • We opened a renovated Cardinal Gibbons Short Journey Retreat Center in the spring as the new home to our flourishing and expanded retreat program. • The school community held a dedication and blessing of 14 new stations of the cross, which now stand vigil in the Prayer Garden. • The Parent Faith Formation Series, taught by Gibbons educators, continued to expand and along with the Lenten and Advent series also included The Mass, a six-segment video study program. • Gibbons students helped middle schoolers experience a deeper connection with God at six middle school retreats.

• The National Honor Society Toy and Clothing Drive, long a Gibbons tradition, brought joy to 88 children who attend Beginning and Beyond Child Development Center. For the second consecutive year, students and educators also performed a special Christmas program for the children. • PrayerCRU offered myriad opportunities to parents to pray together and for others at Mass, Friday prayer gatherings, and through prayer intentions.

It provides myriad opportunities to the entire school community to cultivate a spirit of connection to all, to foster the growth of the total person, and to put our faith into action. Those opportunities increased this year, enriching Gibbons’ already strong legacy of caring for others. • Gibbons helped students secure internships at several of the many service agencies it partners with each year. • The school community continued to assist in ongoing efforts to help those devastated by Hurricane Florence.

• Gibbons Family Association offers monthly class-specific service projects to parents as well as Gibbons Gathers, which took place in April. This annual spring tradition drew more than 400 community members to serve in 19 different organizations. • Gibbons Alumni planned several days of service throughout the year, including serving lunch to the less fortunate at Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen as a way to give back and connect with their alma mater. • More than 100 students and educators responded to the call to donate blood during the annual blood drive, continuing a time-honored Gibbons tradition of service.

Y E A R I N R E VI E W All members of the Gibbons family have the potential to lead through retreats, athletics, the arts, co-curricular activities, special events and such programs as Gibbons Positioning System or GPS. By the time our students are seniors, they are creating even more opportunities for the students who follow them. Alumni also willingly mentor students as do parents. Modeling leadership enhances the school’s culture and mission. These opportunities grew exponentially this year.

• Gibbons added two new leadership conferences. One was for student-athletes and coaches to discuss the Athletics Culture Code. The other was for parents and educators to agree on a shared vision that will help shape the school community. • Through GPS, student-leaders hosted 372 eighth grade students for a day and provided them with a look inside the Gibbons experience. • The first-ever Gibbons Career Week took place in March and provided opportunities for students to gain insights about college majors and career paths. The week culminated in Career Expo with 30 alumni offering their advice, expertise, and real-world experiences to current students. • Using the leadership skills they learned, Gibbons students helped develop those same skills in 100 younger students throughout the Raleigh Diocese at the Middle School Leadership Conference in October.

Gibbons is more than a place of learning. It’s also a home for our students, parents, and educators who are fully engaged by the Gibbons spirit. The joy and energy visitors see here comes from our community’s deep sense of faith, hope, and love, and our appreciation for one another. • The varsity Science Olympiad team clinched first place at the Science Olympiad Regional Competition, while the JV team placed third in its division. • The Robotics Team won the design award at the North Carolina FIRST Tech Challenge State Competition. • Gibbons welcomed home more than 200 alumni and guests at Homecoming Reunion Weekend in the fall, and hosted its first-ever Alumni Weekend, which drew over 200 alumni and guests in the spring. • Gibbons introduced the Golden Crusaders program, which celebrates graduates of 50+ years. • Some 140 golfers and 36 sponsors participated in the 2018 Crusader Classic Golf Tournament.

• Innovative Crusaders Understanding Business Entrepreneurship (iCube) launched the first-ever job board on the school’s website. • Increasingly active, DadCRU brought together Gibbons dads in specific, meaningful activities that foster relationships and serve the school community. • Gibbons bid farewell to Jason Curtis who stepped down as principal after 13 years and welcomed Nancy Barkan to lead the school.

Y E A R I N R E VI E W The Fine Arts at Gibbons teach students to discover their self-expression, take risks, recognize the power of collaboration, and think beyond their boundaries. As an integral part of campus life, the arts enable students to explore and grow their creative gifts and share them with others. By cultivating such skills, students gain a holistic learning experience. These opportunities for creativity continued to expand this year. • Increased cross-collaboration efforts took place among all the Fine Arts programs - on the curricular and co-curricular levels - leading to unique experiences for our students, their families, and our audiences. • Drama students worked with a record number of guest artists and instructors last year, exposing them to new styles, approaches, and opportunities for growth. And the student-directed short play festival became a program staple and added an integrated Arts Design class.

• The Strings program grew with the success of the Orchestra 1 class where students can learn violin, viola, cello or bass without any previous experience. • Plans were unveiled to equip the original rehearsal space with a new floor to accommodate our flourishing dance and choral programs. • Three AP art students received four National Scholastic Art Awards; and 29 visual arts and media students captured 58 awards in the regional competition.

Y E A R I N R E VI E W Our success is measured by how well our programs further our school’s mission and how we choose to use our God-given gifts and talents. Such missiondriven initiatives as the Athletics Culture Code helped enhance Gibbons Athletics drive to incorporate faithfilled values, moral leadership, and community spirit in and out of the classroom. The year also included many firsts like winning the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 4A Wells Fargo Cup, the NCHSAA Team Scholar-Athlete State Award as a 4A school as well as other successes. • Some 1,265 students were involved in athletics, which offers 49 teams in 27 sports. • Thirty-nine Gibbons Crusaders signed letters of intent to play their respective sports at the college level. • Eight Crusaders were named state champions; five others were recognized as All-Americans, and Jalen Brooks ’19 was honored as NCHSAA Male Athlete of the Year, a program first.

• Gibbons captured three state championships – Women’s Cross Country as well as Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse. In addition, the Varsity Cheerleaders placed first in the Medium Varsity D1-B division in state competition. • Alumnus Stephen Scott ’15 (Vanderbilt ’19), a regular starter on his college baseball team, won a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 National Championship.

Opportunity and balance combine to create an exceptional and engaging learning experience that embraces critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration in a caring Catholic community. Dedicated educators support and challenge students to reach their full potential. We also strive to sustain an environment where students are encouraged to fulfill their God-given vocation to flourish mentally, physically, and spiritually. • Amy Ernenwein was named Director of Professional Development to empower educators and support the skills students need to be prepared for college and work in the 21st century. • Six seniors were named National Merit Finalists; two others were named Park Scholarship Semifinalists; and two more were named MoreheadCain Scholarship Finalists. • Gibbons awarded $1.5 million in tuition assistance last year. • Eighty-three percent of AP students scored 3 or higher on their exam. Doing so provides them with the opportunity to earn college credits and explore other subjects to advance their majors.

Three others were honored for their contributions to the furtherance of our school’s mission and commitment to the enrichment of the Gibbons community. • Gibbons Technology expanded its customer service model, providing students with troubleshooting and relationship- building skills, and, at the same time, enhancing their level of computer literacy and competence. Educators increasingly sought ways to integrate technology into their curriculum. •The library media center added 13 new databases to further aid student research.

LOV E A N D G R AT I T U DE M A K E A N I M PA C T Gibbons - it’s an impactful word sparking feelings of love and gratitude. We witnessed love and gratitude in action throughout the year, but three specific examples come to mind. The Engage With Us video series, revamped efforts to engage alumni, and our first-ever Give Gibbons Day, each highlighted our commitment to mission. The Engage With Us video series shares the many ways our community is actively advancing our mission. The series, in part, captured leadership development initiatives, God-given creativity, and commitment to faith-based experiences through outreach efforts and retreats. These mission-driven experiences make an impact. Throughout the year, we implemented new ways for alumni to engage with their alma mater. We officially introduced the Golden Crusaders program, which celebrates graduates of 50+ years from our community. We hosted engagement opportunities to meet with alumni, including our generous supporters, in cities such as Charlotte, Manhattan, Washington, DC, Atlanta, as well as areas throughout the Triangle. And, we hosted our first-ever Alumni Weekend. Alumni – whether young or old, near or far – shared with great enthusiasm the opportunity to reconnect and support their alma mater. As the fiscal year neared its end, we hosted Give Gibbons Day on June 19. This 24-hour philanthropic effort for members of the Gibbons community – alumni, current parents, parents of alumni, educators, grandparents, friends, and others – to share their love and gratitude was a mission-centered success. After a year of praying, planning, and renovating the

CARDINAL GIBBONS SHORT JOURNEY RETREAT CENTER opened in May and since then has welcomed its first retreatants to their home away from home. Now, the center sports a new logo, introduced above, and plans are underway to host an Open House from 1 – 4 p.m. on October 19, 2019.
