‘WE NEED AS MANY POLLINATORS AS WE CAN GET’ BY ERIC CZARNIK eczarnik@candgnews.com

The Sterling Heights Planning Commission recently deliberated over proposed regulations that could make it easier for residents to literally mind their own beeswax — by maintaining beekeeping apiaries in the city. During a Dec. 13 meeting, the Planning Commission voted 8-0 to recommend a proposed beekeeping ordinance. The proposal would more broadly allow single-family residential properties to engage in hobby beekeeping, as well as multifamily and nonresidential properties under certain circumstances. During a meeting presentation, Assistant City Planner Shawn Keenan said the current rules only allow beekeeping on Sterling Heights single-family residential properties of 8 acres or larger. He explained how the ordinance proposal addresses permitting and processes pertaining to hobbyist beekeeping. Keenan said city officials believe that beekeeping could bring positive benefits for pollination, as well as let resiSee BEEKEEPING on page 8A

UCS, STEVENSON HONOR RICK BYE

BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com

For a noon weekday ceremony honoring a high school football coach, it’s difficult to picture what type of audience will show up. Unless that ceremony is for Sterling Heights Stevenson’s Rick Bye, because his impact is immeasurable through not just Stevenson but Utica Schools Community. “When you really think about a sense of community, where can you see a noontime dedication with this type of turnout with people coming out to see coach (Rick) Bye,” Utica Community Schools Superintendent Robert Monroe said. “It’s simply a special day that I think all of us are going to cherish, and I know coach Bye will certainly cherish.” Faculty members, former players and coaches, and family all gathered at the newly named Rick Bye Fieldhouse Dec. 19 at Stevenson High School as UCS and Stevenson honored Bye. Former players played catchup as they reminisced about their seasons as teammates and talked about their current life, and only Bye could bring everyone together in one room. As Bye took the stage after receiving a plaque in his honor, his opening statement wasn’t a surprise to anyone who knows him well. See BYE on page 11A

Local leaders celebrate Innovate Mound milestone BY ERIC CZARNIK

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel updated the public on the yearslong Innovate Mound project — which just wrapped up its core roadwork along an estimated 9-mile stretch of Mound Road, from Interstate 696 to M-59 — at a Dec. 20 press conference outside Srodek’s Quality Polish Food in Sterling Heights. Hackel credited Macomb County Department of Roads Director Bryan Santo — who donned a Santa hat for the occasion — as well as many other officials, work crews and more for their roles in getting the roadwork done before Christmas. The press conference included a symbolic moving of orange barrels to celebrate. “We have a roadway here that’s going to last a

lifetime — at least, I know, my lifetime,” Hackel said. “This is an exciting day for Macomb County, in particular, our Department of Roads for the work they did.” Officials say Innovate Mound has taken several years and around $220 million to come to fruition. Much of that funding came from the federal Infrastructure for Rebuilding America, or INFRA, grant, as well as contributions from Sterling Heights, Warren, the county and the state, Hackel explained. Sterling Heights contributed approximately $41 million toward the roadwork and around $11 million toward water and sewer improvements, according to Sterling Heights Community Relations Director Melanie Davis. According to Macomb County, the campaign started in 2016 as a gathering of community and business stakeholders. Officials said they applied for the

Becoming a Sterling Heights Featured Artist isn’t child’s play, but at the same time, it is no longer an honor solely confined to grownups. According to the city of Sterling Heights, Aurora Bohlinger recently became the youngest member of its Sterling Heights Featured Artist program. As the Featured Artist for December 2023, her artwork went on display on the second floor of the Sterling Heights Community Center. Aurora, 8, lives in Harper Woods and attends Collins Elementary School in Sterling Heights. She said she was “very, very excited” to be honored and explained that she started painting when she was 5. She said she has refined her talents over time, thanks in part to watching and learning from YouTube how-to art videos. Based on the artwork selection that she submitted, some of Aurora’s favorite things to paint include hearts, animals, “scary things,” and characters from TV shows, movies or video games, such as “Wednesday,” “My Little Pony,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Pokemon,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s” and “Poppy Playtime.” While Aurora currently wants to keep her work and is not ready to sell her art yet, she also is looking forward to growing and developing as an artist. “I’m just going to keep going,” she said. Aurora added that she often paints with acrylics with her mom, Natalie Bohlinger, as a family activity. Natalie said she learned about the Sterling Heights Featured Artist program while looking for opportunities for Aurora to put her work on display.

Aurora from page 3A

“And there was no age limit, so we wanted to see if it would work,” Natalie said. “(Aurora) wanted her own art show because she had many paintings. … In the early fall, we sent in pictures and printed them off.” According to Natalie, Aurora is looking forward to painting a blue moose statue from Niagara Falls that she saw during a family vacation in Canada.

“She’ll say, ‘Mom, take a picture of that. I need to paint that,’” the mother said. Jeanne Schabath-Lewis, from the Sterling Heights Arts Commission, said this was the first time someone so young has applied for the Featured Artist program. She said Aurora’s work is good for her age and that her number of art pieces is “outstanding.” Schabath-Lewis said that while accepting Aurora might cause an increase of parents submitting their kids’ artwork, Aurora’s submission was unique. “They were very thorough,” Schabath-

Lewis said. “We thought, ‘Let’s give them a chance and see what happens.’ … Art is across generations.” Learn more about Sterling Heights

Mound from page 3A

INFRA grant in 2017, and the U.S. Department of Transportation picked the Mound project for funding in 2018, awarding it $98 million. A 2021 groundbreaking started making the vision a reality, officials added. According to the Innovate Mound website, the project focused on roadwork between 15 Mile Road and M-59 in 2022, and then it focused on roadwork between 15 Mile and I-696 in 2023. Santo said the project was a “true team effort” and thanked his staff, contractor Dan’s Excavating Inc., engineering firm HNTB, and others. He said the community and the various levels of government involved have much to be proud of. “This is a new roadway. It’s smoother. It’s safer. It’s more efficient,” Santo said. “And people should know that traveling this road is going to be advanced into the future, as far as the durability and the lifespan of this product that we have introduced here.” Besides fixing the once-crumbling surface, the project also made ambitious plans for improvements such as landscaping, drainage, lighting, traffic signals and technology that could monitor traffic conditions, ease traffic jams and more, officials said. A portion of Mound north of 17 Mile Road was also widened. Officials said the new road has incorporated intelligent transportation systems, which according to the Innovate Mound website, “collect data from connected vehicles, mobile devices, and infrastructure to provide travelers with real-time information such as the status of traffic levels, parking availability, transit schedules, traffic signals, and road weather conditions.” A project representative could not be reached for comment on how drivers’ data

will be collected, used, stored and secured. Macomb County Commissioner Joseph Romano, R-Sterling Heights, said he wasn’t fully sure how the intelligent transportation systems are going to be implemented since “it’s so much in its infancy.” When asked about the potential privacy concerns over motorists and driving data, he compared the situation to reading a license plate. “That makes me a little nervous,” he said, “but if you have nothing to hide, what are your concerns?” At the press conference, Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor credited Sterling Heights City Manager Mark Vanderpool for his role in working with project partners. Taylor called Mound “one of the most important commercial and industrial corridors in the state of Michigan and in the Midwest and beyond.” He added that he was angry several years ago to see Mound’s condition deteriorate to the point where there were thoughts about shutting down portions due to it being untraversable. But Taylor said, “We’re all smiling today.” “The results are phenomenal,” he said. “It is a road that’s going to stand the test of time.” County officials said the Innovate Mound project is over 85% done and that it’s going according to schedule and budget. But they say there is still some more to do in 2024, such as landscaping work. Hackel added that the county and other stakeholders also want to get federal funding to fix Mound Road from I-696 to Eight Mile Road. According to the county, stakeholders submitted an application for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant in August. dents produce honey, jelly and beeswax. He said the proposed rules take inspiration from Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices, or GAAMPs. The presentation explained that GAAMPs standards include putting the hives in quiet spots with a constant water supply, as well as setting up a flyway barrier that adjusts the bees’ flight paths and keeps them from moving toward neighbors. Keenan said that among the newly proposed regulations, local beekeepers would need a permit and would need to put their hives in either the side or back yard, at least 25 feet away from the property line. The city would also require residential beekeepers to have a flyway barrier and water supply, and the proposal would protect schools and daycare facilities from having unwanted hives next to them. “The ordinance was drafted with the hopes that, should the Planning Commission and City Council wish to pursue allowing hobby beekeeping in the city, that it can be done in a well-regulated and safe manner,” Keenan said. After the presentation, Planning Commission members responded. Planning Commission Vice Chair Nathan Inks praised the ordinance overall but criticized a stipulation that he said called for animal control, the building official, code enforcement and the city planner to periodically check beekeepers’ property without a search warrant. “That just seems very excessive, to me,”

Inks said, adding later: “That just seems like a lot of resources too, for bees. Our code enforcement is already busy as it is.” In response, City Planner II Alexis Richards said she thought the intent was to give the city the ability to inspect in response to a neighbor’s concern. She added that a proposed beekeeping permit would be valid for three years, which could mean that a property could be inspected every three years. Planning Commission member Geoff Gariepy sought clarification on whether the beekeeping in question, which was sometimes described as hobbyist or noncommercial, would still allow participants to sell their honey or other byproducts at farmers markets. In response, Richards said selling those products at farmers markets would be allowed, adding that the intent is to prohibit large-scale commercial operations. Gariepy also suggested keeping the beekeeping application fee as low as possible. “We need as many pollinators as we can get,” he said. When responding to a different question, Richards added that if a bee colony is found to be aggressive, the beekeeper must relocate or destroy the colony. Despite the Planning Commission’s recommendation, the proposal will not change the local laws unless the Sterling Heights City Council votes to adopt it at a future meeting. Learn more about the Sterling Heights Planning Commission by visiting sterlingheights.gov. Call Staff Writer Eric Czarnik at (586) 498-1058.

“I’m overwhelmed, and I can tell you why there’s so many people here: because most of my friends don’t work,” Bye said to the audience. “They’re up by 10 and got their pajamas on by 6.” Bye made sure to give thanks to every faculty member, superintendent, teacher and principal who helped him throughout his decades at Stevenson, and he shared a special thanks to his longtime assistant coaches — Jerry Lajeunesse, Ken Fiott, Joe Emanuele and Ron Kerr. Lajeunesse, Fiott and Kerr were part of Bye’s staff through the entirety of his tenure and remain close friends today. Current Stevenson coach Justin Newcomb took the podium and spoke on how instrumental Bye has been for the football program even years after retiring, especially when it comes to the players. “I can remember a few years back (2019) when we had just beaten Cass Tech in a playoff game (regional finals), and he came back to practice the next day with football beanie caps for each player,” Newcomb said. “Giv-

ing back his own time and his own money to get that done is just credible to the man that he is.” Bye always put his players first, and the crowd of former players in attendance told the story of a coach who impacted numerous lives, including 2010 graduate Jason Fracassa. Bye gave a shoutout to Fracassa, his starting quarterback who led Stevenson to a state finals runner-up spot in 2009, during his speech, and Fracassa had plenty to say about his former coach. “He was unbelievable,” Fracassa said. “He was about as close to a father as you could be, and not just to me but all my teammates. He was unbelievable. He definitely had the most impact on my life out of anybody I can remember.” The ceremony also showcased Stevenson’s future plans for the fieldhouse as the school plans to implement state-of-the-art equipment for its athletic programs and a full revamp of the floor space. It will be a new-look fieldhouse, and being named after a legendary coach is a great start to the fieldhouse’s legacy. “Here we are almost 50 years later in this beautiful facility, and I’m so proud to have my name attached to it,” Bye said.

Male steals jewelry from store

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police investigated a shoplifting case the night of Dec. 11 at a store in Lakeside Mall, 14000 Lakeside Circle. A worker reportedly told police that three males had entered the store – one was around 25 years old, another was around 15, and the last one was of unknown age. One of the males reportedly asked to see a diamond cross necklace with a white gold tennis chain that was in a glass display. After he was shown the jewelry, he allegedly seized the chain and fled.

Cussing customer harasses staff

STERLING HEIGHTS — A male customer was allegedly harassing workers and cussing at a grocery store in the 43000 block of Schoenherr Road Dec. 11. Although the man reportedly drove away southbound along Schoenherr in a black vehicle, the reporting person still wanted to see police.

Evicted male confronts Walmart security

STERLING HEIGHTS — A male suspect wearing a camo winter jacket was reportedly “physical with security” Dec. 11 at the Walmart near the intersection of Van Dyke Avenue and 14 Mile Road.

Police preside over hotel guests’ eviction

STERLING HEIGHTS — Officers responded to an extended-stay hotel in the 33000 block of Van Dyke Avenue early in the morning of Dec. 13 after getting a tip about a disturbance. Staff wanted to evict some guests who were allegedly causing a ruckus. According to staff, the guests had clogged a toilet and wanted another room. Although another room was offered, the guests sought a refund and were yelling in the lobby after that request was declined, the report said. Police said they found the guests, delivered the eviction request and then observed while the guests finished packing and left. Anyone who has more information about these events or general suspicious happenings is encouraged to call the Sterling Heights Police Department at (586) 446-2800. — Eric Czarnik

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police reported that at around 11:15 a.m. Dec. 19, a fraud victim got a call from an impostor pretending to be her son, who claimed that he had been in an out-of-state car crash in which he had hit a pregnant woman. The victim also reportedly heard from multiple people professing to be lawyers who allegedly said the son needed $15,500 for bail. The woman reportedly followed the fraudster’s directions and took cash from her bank account, put it in a shoebox and gave it to a courier who came to her home at around 1:13 p.m. that day. Sterling Heights police said they urge anyone receiving such a message to first directly and independently contact the person who supposedly needs help. Police also encourage residents who experience a similar scam to call Detective Mark Campau at (586) 446-2842 or to email him at mcampau@sterling-heights.net.

METRO DETROIT — Getting in shape and losing a few pounds are common New Year’s resolutions, and local gym owners and trainers are sharing people’s goals, what techniques are popular and what they think is most effective. Mona Mangen, the owner of Hotworx in Clawson and Plymouth, said that she’s seen an uptick in those looking for short, “heated” workouts. “People are really loving the heated workouts,” she said. “It’s 125 degrees, but it’s a very dry heat. It’s short, but you get an intense sweat. People also feel like the one-onone instructor feeling they get from things like a personal trainer really seems to help.” Alexis Pacheco is a certified personal trainer, a health coach and the owner of Five Crown Fitness in Shelby Township. She said that she is seeing less heavy workouts and more of a focus on steady improvements and mindfulness. “I think that people have been tracking steps. Because of the weather right now, which is a little abnormal, people are still walking either outside or on a treadmill. They want to get more movement in their day,” she said. “I think there’s an increase See WORKOUT on page 16A

in wellness and mindfulness as a whole. People are seeking more opportunities for yoga and meditation as opposed to traditional strength training.” Douglas Edwards, the director of the YMCA of Farmington Hills, said that many people are looking for group activities. “I think the small group classes are a common thing we are seeing,” said Edwards. “The social aspect of older adults and meeting goals and staying in shape to not only get in shape but socialize also is very common right now.” The desire for social activities is driving people back to the gym after COVID, something all three experts said is increasing membership and attendance numbers. “Our usage is definitely up. During COVID, we had maybe 200 people daily,” said Edwards. “We are now up to about 600 people daily. Before the pandemic was probably between 600 and 800 people, depending on the time of year.” “Per week, we are seeing about 100 to 150 people. It was about that point before COVID,” added Mangen. “Actually, we

might be seeing a few more people than before COVID.” Pacheco believes that most who were in the habit of working out never stopped, but now people are seeking more chances to get out and be with others in their workouts. “I think it’s different than pre-pandemic levels,” she explained. “I think people are seeking community, so they are seeking more group settings. People who were accustomed to working out never stopped. They have developed more out of the Peloton era and now are focused more on groups or clubs. I think it’s very different than it was.” While many are trying new avenues for health, many New Year’s resolutions still revolve around health-related goals, but sometimes in non-traditional ways. “Overall health is important for a lot of people,” said Mangen. “We’re not seeing as many people setting weight goals, as opposed to general, more healthier living and lifestyle changes.” “Some of the common resolutions are healthier food habits or losing a specific weight amount,” Edwards added. “Often we see people trying to team up with someone else as an accountability partner.” Pacheco warned against untested trends and shortcuts, however.

and the No. 1 thing that stopped people was trying to do too much at once and making massive changes that their body and mind weren’t ready for. There’s a much higher probability of self-sabotage if the effort you need to put in is too much.” Edwards agreed that one of the best things someone trying to get in shape can do is to take small but steady steps. “If you have a specific goal, think of it as a ladder with steps on it,” he said. “If the steps are too far apart from each other, you can’t reach the next step. Reasonable goals allow you to make this steady progress. Having an accountability partner is a big thing that helps too.” “My advice would be to stay diligent and the weight will fall off,” agreed Mangen. “Getting to the gym is the hardest part for anybody.” Pacheco said that one of the oldest and most tried and true methods is still the most effective: join a partner or group in health goals. “Create reasonable expectations and engage with accountability partners, whether that’s a coach, a friend, a spouse, a group that meets regularly or so forth,” she said. “ It’s much easier and much more fun when accomplishing these goals as part of a group.”

“Weight loss is still the No. 1 goal,” she said. “There’s a lot of confusion about how to go about healthy weight loss. New and trending medications available have become popularized from celebrities. Especially with women, there’s a lot of confusion about weight loss. We still recommend traditional routes, such as increased movement, eating healthy, water intake, sleep and mindset.” The biggest challenges for people in their health goals remain, it seems, staying committed to the initial goal in the new year. “Accountability and consistency are always the biggest hurdles,” said Edwards. “About 60% of people fall off within 90 days of making their New Year’s resolutions. At The Y, we try to guide people so they stay in line with their aspirations for the whole year.” “Staying consistent and remaining motivated are always the big ones,” agreed Mangen. Pacheco also said the unrealistic goals can be something that causes people to give up on their resolutions, and she advises people to set more manageable milestones. “I think the biggest struggle is unrealistic expectations because of things they see on social media and in our culture,” she said. “I used to be a coach for WeightWatchers,

Woman kicked out of gym for yelling

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police went to a gym in the 37000 block of Van Dyke Avenue, north of Metropolitan Parkway, Dec. 3 after staff asked police to help evict a woman. The woman was allegedly yelling after being told to call the corporate office over addressing a subscription she reportedly didn’t agree to. Police said they told her she had to leave.

Juvenile reckless driver nearly hits car

STERLING HEIGHTS — A minor was recklessly driving a white Hyundai Elantra in the Meijer parking lot at 36600 Van Dyke Ave. the night of Dec. 3, drifting and hanging out the window. The vehicle, which had four to five juveniles inside, nearly struck the witness’s car, police said. According to police, the Elantra was last seen heading eastbound on Metropolitan Parkway.

Bike stolen outside business

STERLING HEIGHTS — A predominantly gray-colored bike was reportedly stolen outside a costume store in the 33000 block of Van Dyke Avenue, north of 14 Mile Road, Dec. 3. The theft reportedly happened while the owner spent around a half hour in the store. While the bike had a lock on it, it was unsecured, police said.

Police find no evidence of rapper on SUV

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police heard a tip about a man with a blue Nissan SUV who was allegedly “rapping and yelling at everyone” before climbing on the vehicle’s hood and “calling everyone” Dec. 2 near a restaurant in the 35000 block of Van Dyke Avenue, north of 15 Mile Road. When police arrived at the scene, they learned that the man wasn’t doing what the original complainant claimed. No further action was taken.

p.m. Nov. 29. The woman stated that earlier in the day, she noticed several items were missing from her garage. She reported that several tools and fishing poles had been stolen. The department’s detective bureau was investigating.

Rock thrown through window

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 2:41 a.m. Dec. 3, officers were dispatched to the 48000 block of Pineview Drive, near Dequindre and Hamlin roads, for a vandalism report. The caller told dispatch that someone had just thrown a rock through a window of his home. Officers arrived on the scene and saw the shattered window on the east side of the home. The value of the window was approximately $500, according to the police report. An evidence technician was called to the scene to gather evidence and take photographs. The case was turned over to the Shelby Township Police Department’s detective bureau for further investigation.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A woman came into the Police Department to file a larceny report at 7:30

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 11:27 p.m. on Dec. 1, a report was made about a burglary or forced entry

that occurred on the same day in the 23000 block of Norcrest Drive. Upon arrival, the officer made contact with two witnesses, a 65-year-old man and a 36-year-old man. The 65-year-old man stated he went outside and saw a U-Haul truck backed up to the front door of a residence. He saw two people who looked to be in their late teens or early 20s, and when he said something to them, they got back in the truck and fled. The 65-year-old man picked up the 36-year-old man, who was also outside, and tried to follow the truck before losing sight of it. They returned to the location and saw a southwest bedroom window was broken on the east side of the house and called police. The 36-yearold man said he saw the truck’s owner on Gary Lane at least an hour prior to seeing it on Norcrest. He stated he eventually saw it on Edsel Ford Court. Officers cleared the house. The front door was ajar, and just inside the door was the kitchen stove, refrigerator and a large paper towel package. The house was empty and there was fresh damage in the kitchen from dragging appliances to the front of the house. The southeast bedroom window on the east side of the house was damaged and appeared to be the point of entry due to more pry marks and broken windowpanes. The witnesses were able to contact the owner who went to the location. The owner said there was no one living in the residence and that it was up for sale. She did not notice anything missing when she went through the house, just that the appliances were moved. One of the kitchen cabinets was destroyed and the line to the refrigerator was cut and leaking. The water was turned off and a report number was given to the woman. An evidence technician was called, and photos and fingerprints were taken. The officer made contact with another neighbor, a 35-year-old man, who reviewed his exterior home cameras. The cameras reportedly captured the U-Haul truck and two subjects arriving in the area on Gary Lane around 9 p.m., and the two subjects walking on Norcrest. The officer advised the man to save the footage.

Wanted driver arrested

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — A 21-year-old Detroit man who was pulled over in the area of Opal Street and Mack Avenue at 4:03 p.m. Dec. 7 for having an expired license plate — it had expired in September — found himself in police custody after a check of the Law Enforcement Information Network showed that he was wanted on several local traffic warrants and a no-extradition warrant out of Ohio for being armed and dangerous, and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle/trafficking drugs, according to a police report. Police said the driver also had no

insurance and his license was suspended. His vehicle was impounded.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — Two unknown women are said by police to have entered a store in the 19300 block of Mack Avenue on Dec. 3 and Dec. 6 and stolen eyeglass frames worth a total of more than $1,900. After the suspects left, employees discovered that frames were missing.

Porch pirate strikes

Driver found to be under influence of drugs

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — Police pulled over a 26-year-old Grosse Pointe City woman in the area of Mack Avenue and Opal Street at around 9:50 p.m. Dec. 4 for having illegally tinted windows. According to a police report, the driver also smelled of marijuana and admitted to using marijuana in her vehicle, and she became “argumentative and uncooperative” with police, cursing and yelling at officers and threatening to run them over. The driver allegedly made threats against the family members of officers as well. One officer on the scene also smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath, leading to field sobriety tests that the driver failed. The driver refused to take a preliminary breath test. She was arrested and is facing possible charges including being disorderly and operating under the influence of drugs. Police said they found a freshly burnt blunt under the driver’s seat, as well as a partially consumed bottle of NyQuil in the center cup holder.
