MACOMB TOWNSHIP — A loss is a loss, but some impact a team far more than others, especially when it’s on the regional semifinals stage. Macomb Dakota had a trip to the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 regional championships at its fingertips, but a last-second, buzzer-beating three-pointer from Grosse Pointe North slammed the door shut on Dakota’s dreams of a regional title shot. Township officials: Parks, construction, grants highlight 2023 BY DEAN VAGLIA dvaglia@candgnews.com
MACOMB TOWNSHIP — It may not feel like it, but 2023 was a busy year for Macomb Township. The last year saw new parks, a slew of grant fund-
ing and road projects aimed at matching the community’s growth. At the top of the list for the township’s elected officials in 2023 was the opening of Pitchford Park. Located on Romeo Plank between 22 Mile and 23 Mile roads, the new park saw a soft opening in November with finishing touches coming this spring. See YEAR on page 6A

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — In a festive final meeting of 2023, the Macomb Township Board of Trustees received two gifts at its Dec. 20 meeting. The first was an “unmodified” audit opinion from Plante Moran, the highest opinion auditing firms give for financial statements. “Beyond that, I would say that the records are in outstanding condition throughout the year,” said David Herrington, a Plante Moran accountant. “You are making decisions based on accurate information on a timely basis, which makes it strategically advantageous for our community.” The fiscal year 2023 audit showed that the township brought in $47.3 million with $38.6 million in expenditures. Property taxes made up the largest share of revenues at about $20.7 million, while public safety was the highest expenditure at $14.6 million. Revenue was nearly $10 million more than it was in 2022, with federal revenue sources being the biggest change, from $463,000 to about $7.2 million. Expenditures increased from $35.5 million in 2022 but were lower
than the $39.4 million in 2021. The second gift granted to the board was delivered by Santa Claus himself but came from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development. An oversized novelty check represented $1.7 million from the state and county to help create a trail along the North Branch of the Clinton River known as the North Branch Greenway. “The greenway is a project initiated by the county of Macomb, the goal of which is to establish a continuous green space along the North Branch of the Clinton River from 26 Mile Road all the way down to Hall Road,” Macomb Township Treasurer Leon Drolet said. “Now this would be a very ambitious project and very expensive, but our township bought into the idea that, if we can get grant funding (and) state funding, we should begin that project to preserve open space along the river.” The $1.7 million grant, which will be used to buy property along the river to begin work on the greenway, came from the DNR’s Natural Resources Trust Fund. Oil, gas and logging companies paid into the fund through leases and royalties until 2011,

Getting a DNR trust fund grant is a competitive process and Macomb Township staff lobbied hard to get a share of the fund. “When the scoring came out, we were on the bubble,” Drolet said. “Jodi (Clay-
comb, the township’s deputy supervisor), myself and some folks from the county went up to Lansing. We met with the DNR trust fund team, we advocated for this project and thankfully they decided to fund us.” Drolet and Macomb Township Supervisor Frank Viviano praised Claycomb for See TRUSTEES on page 17A

MOUNT CLEMENS — About a quarter of a mile separates the Anton Art Center from Advancing Macomb’s offices in Mount Clemens. The short walk down Macomb Place only takes a few minutes at a solid clip, but few people’s trips match the magnitude of Phil Gilchrist’s. The executive director of the Anton Art Center for eight years, Gilchrist has traded his spot at one nonprofit for another to become the executive director of Advancing Macomb. “I am pretty excited for this opportunity,” Gilchrist said. “I have long watched the work Advancing Macomb has been doing and have been really excited about their support
for nonprofit organizations. Having been a small nonprofit director myself, the work they have been approaching has been really interesting to me. I think there is a ton of opportunity for the organization and I’m really looking forward to getting into the work here and seeing what kind of a difference we can make in Macomb County.” The end of Gilchrist’s 14 years the art center was announced in early December 2023, originally coming as an email from the Anton Art Center before Advancing Macomb confirmed the move days later. “It was bittersweet to leave,” Gilchrist said. “I had actually been there for a long time. My own history with that organization goes back to when I was a kid taking classes in the lower level. It was a bittersweet end. This new opportunity is a really exciting one I am grateful for, but leaving a place where I’ve spent so much of my time can be difficult.” See DIRECTOR on page 15A

Growth of junior class keeps LC Unified in title hunt BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com
MACOMB COUNTY — L’Anse Creuse Unified may be a young squad with heavy aspirations, but they’re figuring things out in the race for the Macomb Area Conference Red league title. The team is a co-op of Macomb L’Anse Creuse North, Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse and Richmond, who joined LC Unified this season. Last season’s campaign told the story of an inexperienced team comprised of 11 sophomores hoping to make their mark following a 2021 team that made a run to the Division 1 state quarterfinals. The only difference is the 2021 team had 11 seniors to its name, which resulted in a 20-8 season and a regional title in the process before falling to Detroit Catholic Central in the quarterfinals. LC Unified ended last season 12-13 with an underwhelming showing in an 8-0 loss to Macomb Dakota in the regional semifinals, which shut the door on a LC Unified team that never seemed to find their footing. Now 9-5 and fighting for the top spot
in the league, trailing first place Romeo by only five points, LC Unified’s 11 juniors have molded into the players LC Unified coach Jon Nader hoped they’d become this season. “It’s tremendous growth,” Nader said. “With confidence, they’re all different kids. Going from sophomores to juniors, it’s a big year. They’re all I wouldn’t say surprising us, but we’ve been looking forward to seeing this. We’re looking forward to that growth continuing this season and carrying into their senior year as well.” Junior forward Drew Halaas, the lone Richmond player, leads the junior pack with 15 points (8 goals and 7 assists) while junior forwards Aiden Suchocki (15), Justin Brooks (16), Brayden Ramsden (11) and Vince Pica (14) round out the double-digit point players. The lone outlier is a player who is on pace to be one of the most exciting players in the Macomb Area Conference — sophomore forward Logan Jarvey. Jarvey finished second on the team in points last season with 21 and currently has a team-high 18 points, 13 of which are from

Now that everyone has raised a glass to 2024, why not make self-care more thaan just another resolution? nails and a strong sense of style, regardless of life’s ups and downs,” said Josi, who is also the mother of 5-year-old boy-girl twins. “This appreciation for esthetics is deeply ingrained within me.” When Josi, who is also a holistic and meditation therapist and an acne specialist, opened Viana Brazil Spa, she wanted to infuse her business with the same zest for beauty that’s a hallmark of her homeland. She aimed to create a space where the passion for esthetics is a touchstone for every treatment and product. Her spa artfully blends personal care and fashion. “This vision led to the creation of a boutique in the front offering exclusive Brazilian fitness wear and beachwear,” she said. “I bring many of my clothes directly from Brazil, and customization is available to ensure a perfect fit.” Her boutique also uniquely offers swimsuits year round, unlike most stores which only stock them in summer before moving to liquidation — and if a bikini is slightly off in size, alterations are possible to make it just right. In the back, the establishment transforms into a serene spa, combining the best of both worlds under one roof. The concept draws inspiration
from the convenience of one-stop shopping that Josi said is common in Brazil. Viana Brazil’s spa services encompass a variety of treatments, such as traditional facials, hydrating facials, anti-aging facials, intensive acne treatments, skin-refining chemical peels, lash enhancements, microblading for eyebrows and expert waxing services. “Last year is behind us, but we do have control over the year that lies ahead,” Josi said. “My mission is to bring to people what I have found about beauty, inside and out. There is nothing better than to love the image that you see in the mirror every day. I want to help people to see beauty within themselves.”

For those who are perpetually busy, like mothers balancing life’s demands, it’s easy to let years slip by without setting aside moments for some much-deserved “me time,” said Josi Viana, owner of Viana Brazil Spa. “Prioritizing self-care is the foundation for a happier life because when you take care of your health, body and mind it enhances your work, your relationships and your environment.” In Brazil, Josi’s homeland, there’s a vibrant culture that celebrates beauty in all circumstances. The belief is that beauty brings a sense of success and optimism, even when times are tough. “It’s common to see people in Brazil with perfect

“It’s our third developed park where there’s activities and a playscape and a dog park,” Macomb Township Treasurer Leon Drolet said. Where Pitchford Park is a developed park, Lucido River Park is a nature-focused addition to the township’s parks and recreation lineup. Acquired in early 2023 with a donation from the family of Macomb Township Trustee Peter Lucido III, a clubhouse on the site at 52127 North Ave. has been repurposed as an event space while its proximity to the North Branch of the Clinton River gives the township a foothold to build its North Branch Greenway project. The greenway project plans to preserve natural space along the township’s stretch of the branch and would be nowhere without a late-year $1.7 million grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development. The DNR grant was the third largest the township received in 2023. Over $10.5 million came to the township in the form of grants, appropriations and donations outside of regular grant funds. “We set out to dramatically increase the amount of our residents’ state and federal tax dollars that we bring back to the township,” Drolet said. Parks received about $1.8 million of those funds with other grants adorning parks with trees, signage, a butterfly garden and a dog park statue at Pitchford Park. Infrastructure projects received the most funds with $8.8 million being put toward current and future projects. A grant worth $1.1 million was acquired to update the township’s streetlights and congressional representatives brought $7.6 million for transportation projects, including $2.6 million in federal funds to repair a bridge on 21 Mile Road near Garfield Road. The extension of Garfield and widening of 23 Mile Road were likely noticed by drivers, and they can expect more work in the years to come. Garfield will receive further northward expansion while 2 miles of 25 Mile Road will be widened. The widening of Romeo Plank will likely see its first steps made in 2024 while the expansion of Broughton Road will likely remain in a $5 million state-funded visualization stage until construction begins in 2026 or 2027.
“It will be a big relief to get Garfield through,” Macomb Township Supervisor Frank Viviano said. “Romeo Plank will be a big headache for residents in the years it is under construction, but it’s sorely needed. As someone who lives on that intersection, it’s a terrible stretch of road to live on and drive on.” It does not take a master’s degree in planning to see how much of the township’s transportation development is car-centric, but Viviano said steps are being taken to support other modes of transportation. A grant-funded pathway connecting the township center to Macomb Corners Park will be finished in 2024 and a bridge will connect Pitchford Park to the neighborhood to its west. Sidewalks are planned to increase the pedestrian and bicycle accessibility of the park. With over $5 million committed to it, township officials have big plans for the expansion of Broughton Road. “A lot of focus is going to be put on making Broughton Road not just a concrete strip to drive on,” Drolet said. “We want to make it a much more significant piece of our community than that, and that includes making sure people can access it and enjoy it from their bike (and) by walking by making sure it’s a streetscape, not just a concrete strip.” Officials believe the year’s developments are the result of effective relationships at township hall and on the Board of Trustees. “It takes time with a new board,” Macomb Township Clerk Kristi Pozzi said. “The first year, everyone is trying to figure out each other and how to work together. The second year, you start to make some progress and you’re cleaning up some of the mess. It’s the third and fourth years where you really start to make progress and a difference, and I think what you’re seeing in 2023, the working together and everyone’s understanding their responsibilities, working with the employees to accomplish for the residents, I think we’re finally seeing the momentum of all (the officials) being elected in 2020.” The Macomb Township Board of Trustees regularly meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at 54111 Broughton Road. MSGCU accepting scholarship applications
METRO DETROIT — Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union is accepting applications for its annual scholarship program now through Tuesday, Feb 27. The credit union plans to award 47 scholarships this year with 33 $2,500 scholarships going to college, trade school and continuing education students and 14 $2,000 scholarships for first responder academy students. “MSGCU was founded by teachers and we’re proud to honor our heritage by advancing educational journeys through our scholarship program,” MSGCU President and CEO Steve Brewer said in a statement from the credit union. “We’ve provided over $1.1 million in scholarships since the inception of our program 20 years ago, helping 575 recipients in the communities we serve further their educational dreams.” Scholarship applications are accepted from nonmembers, but all winners must become members of MSGCU. More information can be found at msgcu.org/scholarships.
Macomb Township holding communications survey MACOMB TOWNSHIP — In order to assess the communication needs and preferences of residents, Macomb Township is holding a communication survey from now until Thursday, Feb. 29. “Our goal is to determine which of our past communication efforts have been the most effective in engaging with a majority of the Township’s residents,” said Macomb Township Supervisor Frank Viviano in a press release. “We want to learn how people are currently receiving information about local events, initiatives and important announcements. This will enable us to focus our efforts on the most impactful channels, ensuring our messages reach the widest possible audience.” To take part, residents can go to macombtwp.org/commsurvey to take the survey or pick up a paper copy at Macomb Township Hall, located at 54111 Broughton Road. For more information, call (586) 992-0710, ext. 6.
MOUNT CLEMENS — The Macomb County Health Department is giving residents free radon testing kits at its Central Health Center at 43525 Elizabeth Road in Mount Clemens. According to a press release from the department, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and is responsible for 21,000 deaths nationwide annually. Radon is colorless, odorless and tasteless, requiring special testing kits to detect. Radon occurs naturally in soil and rock, drifting up through the ground and entering buildings through foundation and wall cracks. Kits are available while supplies last. To request a testing kit, call the Macomb County Health Department at (586) 469-5236.

Resolutions for the new year
MICHIGAN — What are your New Year’s Resolutions for 2024? On Jan. 1, BetKentucky.com, a Kentucky-specific sports betting consumer information portal, released a survey stating 94% of Americans will set New Year’s resolutions this year. In total, 3,000 Americans 21 and older were polled from Oct. 31 through Nov. 3. Of those surveyed, 49% were male and 51% were female. The website compiled a list of the most popular New Year’s resolutions in Michigan. The No. 1 resolution was to “eat healthier and improve diet,” with 38% of those surveyed placing that first. Second on the list with 29% was to “save money and budget better,” followed by 27% of those surveyed vowing to “improve mental health and reduce stress.” Also on the list were to lose weight and get fit, travel more and explore new places, strengthen relationships with family and friends, learn a new skill or hobby, career advancement or change jobs, and reduce drinking consumption.

‘HOT’ WORKOUTS ARE HOT IN 2024 BY BRENDAN LOSINSKI blosinski@candgnews.com
METRO DETROIT — Getting in shape and losing a few pounds are common New Year’s resolutions, and local gym owners and trainers are sharing people’s goals, what techniques are popular and what they think is most effective. Mona Mangen, the owner of Hotworx in Clawson and Plymouth, said that she’s seen an uptick in those looking for short, “heated” workouts. “People are really loving the heated workouts,” she said. “It’s 125 degrees, but it’s
a very dry heat. It’s short, but you get an intense sweat. People also feel like the one-onone instructor feeling they get from things like a personal trainer really seems to help.” Alexis Pacheco is a certified personal trainer, a health coach and the owner of Five Crown Fitness in Shelby Township. She said that she is seeing less heavy workouts and more of a focus on steady improvements and mindfulness. “I think that people have been tracking steps. Because of the weather right now, which is a little abnormal, people are still walking either outside or on a treadmill. See WORKOUTS on page 14A

Dakota
from page 1A
Instead of dwelling on what could’ve been, the Cougars are choosing to embrace last season’s crushing defeat as motivation. “We didn’t lose many people, so we were feeling super confident this year,” senior Gracie Maloney said. “We just want to get past that game (Grosse Pointe North) we lost. That regional game was a heartbreaker for us because we thought we had it. We’re just working hard to be past where we were last year and get to MSU (for the MHSAA playoffs at Michigan State University) this year.” Behind a senior group that includes Maloney, Samone Andrews, Teagan Malloy, Tambre Williams and Jessica Moshenko, Dakota has leaned on its surplus of leadership this season to the tune of a 7-1 record and the second-highest points per game average (56.4) in the Macomb Area Conference. Returning an all-state caliber player like Andrews is always a bonus on the court, but coach Phil McCune said Andrews and the rest of the senior leadership has made a significant impact this season. “I think this might be the best senior leadership that we’ve ever had,” McCune
said. “I think Samone (Andrews) has taken on that leadership role where she expects a lot out of her team every day in practice and at games. You can see what it does to help us be successful on the floor and off the floor.” Andrews is a pure scorer who averaged 15 points per game for the Cougars last season, and she’s picked up right where she left off last year. Combine her with an efficient guard in sophomore Gabby Brooks-Foster, and Dakota has one of the stronger backcourts in the MAC. Sophomore guard Gia Rizzo has been a reliable contributor as well for Dakota. “She’s (Andrews) taken her game to another level than what I had expected,” McCune said. “She put in a tremendous amount of work in the offseason and it’s paying off right now. She’s been pretty tough to stop both offensively and defensively. Having that nice backcourt of her and Gabby (Brooks-Foster) to handle any presses that may come our way is definitely nice to have.” While the backcourt has shined, the Cougars frontcourt combination of Williams, Maloney, Malloy and sophomore guard/forward Brooklyn Garavaglia have made their presence felt this season. to North Texas for softball, is well known for what she can do on the diamond as an elite-level pitcher, but her athletic ability has made her a threat in transition this season. “Me and Tambre (Williams), for posts, are pretty fast, so we just fly down the court and our guards catch us a lot of times,” Maloney said. Williams recently broke the school record for most rebounds in a game with 23 on Dec. 12, and then rebroke her record with 27 rebounds on Dec. 23 against Ferndale. McCune describes Williams as someone with “a motor you can’t teach,” and her effectiveness on the boards translates to her ability to dominate the paint on the offensive end. When Dakota’s bigs aren’t able to get an open shot in the paint, they are effective at finding their guards on the outside. “I think our posts do a good job of attacking the basket, and if it’s not there they’re kicking it back out to the shooters,” McCune said. “It’s just a great combination.” The Cougars opened their season with four-straight wins, including an impressive 66-51 win over Utica Ford on Dec. 9, a team
the Cougars have struggled with in the past. Knowing the mentality of the team after the regional loss and the eagerness to start strong this season, McCune said Utica Ford was a significant win. “That was a huge win for confidence for our girls,” McCune said. “The year before, we swept Ford, and last year they swept us. We know how well coached they are and how many athletes they have. It was a good win for us to get our confidence back and know that we can compete against anybody. We know how hard we have to go every day and not settle for what we did the day before.” Dakota will first focus on the MAC Red league title, which Dakota hasn’t won since the 2017-2018 season and will likely have to battle three-time defending champion Grosse Pointe North for the top spot in the league. Dakota is motivated and ready to overcome last season’s heartbreak, and the senior class players are prepared to end their high school careers on a positive note. “Last year, I played for the seniors because I didn’t want it to ever be their last game,” Maloney said. “Now, I feel like I’m in that position where I’m working for this goal in our senior year, and I think we can achieve that with this team.”

They want to get more movement in their day,” she said. “I think there’s an increase in wellness and mindfulness as a whole. People are seeking more opportunities for yoga and meditation as opposed to traditional strength training.” Douglas Edwards, the director of the YMCA of Farmington Hills, said that many people are looking for group activities. “I think the small group classes are a common thing we are seeing,” said Edwards. “The social aspect of older adults and meeting goals and staying in shape to not only get in shape but socialize also is very common right now.” The desire for social activities is driving people back to the gym after COVID, something all three experts said is increasing membership and attendance numbers. “Our usage is definitely up. During COVID, we had maybe 200 people daily,” said Edwards. “We are now up to about 600 people daily. Before the pandemic was probably between 600 and 800 people, depending on the time of year.” “Per week, we are seeing about 100 to
150 people. It was about that point before COVID,” added Mangen. “Actually, we might be seeing a few more people than before COVID.” Pacheco believes that most who were in the habit of working out never stopped, but now people are seeking more chances to get out and be with others in their workouts. “I think it’s different than pre-pandemic levels,” she explained. “I think people are seeking community, so they are seeking more group settings. People who were accustomed to working out never stopped. They have developed more out of the Peloton era and now are focused more on groups or clubs. I think it’s very different than it was.” While many are trying new avenues for health, many New Year’s resolutions still revolve around health-related goals, but sometimes in non-traditional ways. “Overall health is important for a lot of people,” said Mangen. “We’re not seeing as many people setting weight goals, as opposed to general, more healthier living and lifestyle changes.” “Some of the common resolutions are healthier food habits or losing a specific weight amount,” Edwards added. “Often we see people trying to team up with someone else as an accountability partner.” Pacheco warned against untested trends
and shortcuts, however. “Weight loss is still the No. 1 goal,” she said. “There’s a lot of confusion about how to go about healthy weight loss. New and trending medications available have become popularized from celebrities. Especially with women, there’s a lot of confusion about weight loss. We still recommend traditional routes, such as increased movement, eating healthy, water intake, sleep and mindset.” The biggest challenges for people in their health goals remain, it seems, staying committed to the initial goal in the new year. “Accountability and consistency are always the biggest hurdles,” said Edwards. “About 60% of people fall off within 90 days of making their New Year’s resolutions. At The Y, we try to guide people so they stay in line with their aspirations for the whole year.” “Staying consistent and remaining motivated are always the big ones,” agreed Mangen. Pacheco also said the unrealistic goals can be something that causes people to give up on their resolutions, and she advises people to set more manageable milestones. “I think the biggest struggle is unrealistic expectations because of things they see on social media and in our culture,” she said. “I used to be a coach for WeightWatchers,
and the No. 1 thing that stopped people was trying to do too much at once and making massive changes that their body and mind weren’t ready for. There’s a much higher probability of self-sabotage if the effort you need to put in is too much.” Edwards agreed that one of the best things someone trying to get in shape can do is to take small but steady steps. “If you have a specific goal, think of it as a ladder with steps on it,” he said. “If the steps are too far apart from each other, you can’t reach the next step. Reasonable goals allow you to make this steady progress. Having an accountability partner is a big thing that helps too.” “My advice would be to stay diligent and the weight will fall off,” agreed Mangen. “Getting to the gym is the hardest part for anybody.” Pacheco said that one of the oldest and most tried and true methods is still the most effective: join a partner or group in health goals. “Create reasonable expectations and engage with accountability partners, whether that’s a coach, a friend, a spouse, a group that meets regularly or so forth,” she said. “ It’s much easier and much more fun when accomplishing these goals as part of a group.”

Gilchrist’s role at Advancing Macomb will involve all aspects of the organization’s operations, from overseeing programs and finances, to setting and executing strategic plans, to the organization’s marketing and public relations communications. In the same statement announcing Gilchrist’s departure, the Anton Art Center announced its board selected Peggy DiMercurio, currently the center’s education and community engagement manager, to serve as interim director. DiMercurio has been with the Anton Art Center since 2018 when it was looking for an education coordinator. “I was doing the same kind of work for a local dance company, and I thought it would be a good fit, so I came in and interviewed and was hired,” DiMercurio said. While the news of Gilchrist’s departure was seemingly sudden, DiMercurio says the small size of the Anton Art Center’s staff has given her the experience to direct the center while the board searches for a permanent candidate. “When Phil announced he was moving on to a new position, there was talk between the board and ourselves on which way we wanted to go with this,” DiMercurio said. “The board had faith that we could keep things moving forward through this process because we were so involved with all of the
programs and the day-to-day that we had people in place to be able to run this interim.” DiMercurio said it was “a natural move” taking on the interim director duties, being a full-time employee of the Anton Art Center, and that it put her in the position of working on events and with Gilchrist. “I’m comforted in knowing that Peggy DiMercurio is definitely capable and I’m confident that the organization is in good hands now that I’m gone,” Gilchrist said. DiMercurio expressed interest in the executive director position herself, though she said she needed to see the board’s expectations for the role before applying. “I have a strong love for this community and the art center, and I really enjoy working with all of the families and instructors and volunteers and all of the people, and I want to make sure I am in the position where I can do the most good for the art center,” DiMercurio said. Until the director’s seat is filled, life will go on at the Anton Art Center. The center is getting ready to showcase the best Michigan artists have to offer in its 51st Michigan Annual gallery and is currently accepting entries for various shows and exhibits to be held throughout 2024. As for the two nonprofits, both Gilchrist and DiMercurio are certain the Anton Art Center and Advancing Macomb will work together on related projects. “We have very similar missions and definitely want to keep things moving forward,” DiMercurio said.

wants to be the best one on the ice. He’s a quiet kid, but he leads by example. He’s one of the hardest working kids day in and day out.” LC Unified’s remaining juniors anchor a backline that has allowed only three goals per game this season with Jonah Kramer, Aiden Willson, Aiden Carrithers and Mario Boskovich, a three-year varsity player. Senior and four-year varsity goalie Nathanael Maurin has manned the net to the tune of a 4-2 record with junior goalie Zach Hill, who is 3-0 on the season, and sophomore Perez Silva also getting time in net. Maurin said the chemistry of the junior backline has led to the defensive success this season. “On the defensive side, especially compared to last year, we’re very strong defensively,” Maurin said. “Because we have the same defensive core as last year, they’re all in-tune with each other and have good communication all throughout.” Maurin was an impact player for LC Unified during their 2021 season, finishing 7-1 with a 2.63 goals against average in 10 games. Maurin was one of three players currently on the team to be a part of the 2021
quarterfinals team (Boskovich and Hill), and Nader said it was an adjustment for Maurin last season during the losing skids. “Last year was really a tough year for him (Maurin), and we had a lot of sit downs and just talked to him about it,” Nader said. “Being in such a competitive team two years ago and then we lost all those kids, it was a different role for him. I said, ‘Hey, this is your team now.’ We only had three other seniors. This year, he definitely has a great attitude towards them and is trying to develop them saying, ‘Hey, this is what we did back then and this is where we want to be at.’” Maurin and company have had their spirits up this season as LC Unified continues to put together a successful year. There’s still some areas of improvement with the consistency of the offensive production, but Maurin said he expects the team to be firing on all cylinders towards the end of the year. “I’d say definitely tuning in on the offense,” Maurin said. “There’s a couple times where it’s hard to break out, and we got to get better shots in the offensive zone and use our offensive zone time wisely. Once the offense kind of tunes it into where the defense is, I think we’re going to have a strong end to the year.” Call Staff Writer Jonathan Szczepaniak at (586) 498-1090.

her role in getting the grant. “She was the driving force behind this in our township,” Viviano said. “She did a tremendous amount of work. The grant applications for the DNR are lengthy and cumbersome. If it were not for her, we would have never gotten this far. We would have never acquired this resource for the township.” Viviano said the project would take “decades” to complete but would include the preservation of 1,300 acres of natural riverfront if seen through.
New professional services contract
Trustees approved a new professional engineering services contract, adding OHM Advisors to its lineup of Anderson, Eckstein & Westrick Inc. and Fishbeck. OHM was brought in to give the township more engineering capacity. James Van Tiflin, Macomb Township’s land development director, told trustees projects would be assigned based on each firm’s expertise. OHM is notable for its work on sidewalk projects in Macomb

County and is currently working with Macomb Township to visualize the Broughton Road extension. According to the contract with three firms, $7.6 million was spent on engineering services over the past five years and a similar amount is expected over the next five years.

Bridge funding
Several bridge projects received funding at the meeting. The first of those were bridges spanning the Clinton River at 21 Mile and 22 Mile roads with costs split 50/50 between the township and the county. The bridge at 21 Mile will cost Macomb Township $44,355 and the 22 Mile Road bridge will cost $42,942. A bridge to connect Pitchford Park with the neighborhood to the west was approved with JSS-Macomb LLC awarded the $214,860 contract to build it. The bridge will cross the open channel Denryter Drain. State grant funds are paying for the bridge and are expected to cover the entirety of the project’s costs. Viviano said the township is also working on connecting the Romeo Plank-based Pitchford Park to the sidewalks along 22 Mile Road. Call Staff Writer Dean Vaglia at (586) 498-1043.

L’Anse Creuse offers community education programs CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Education is not just lectures in a classroom. It is paddling through a swimming pool, taking the first steps onto a wrestling mat, hearing a symphony that moves your soul and, above all, education is a lifelong pursuit. In an effort to keep up with the educational needs of all its area residents, L’Anse Creuse Public Schools offers community education programs all year round. “Our community education program is a way for the district to get out into the community and provide services for seniors, for kids, for anybody that’s looking to be involved in something,” said Major Mickens, director of the community education program. The primary idea behind L’Anse Creuse’s community education program is to provide a unified recreation program across the district. “Because we cover so much of an area, we don’t have a specific rec center or something that would provide services like this for the community,” Mickens said. “Us having the nice facilities and great people here and
great people willing to work for us, we’re able to provide that service.” Community education programs typically fall into four age categories: elementary school, middle school, adults and seniors. Programs are varied at each age group with elementary students offered a mix of music and sports classes. Middle schoolers can take part in district-wide cheer and wrestling programs. Adults have a variety of fitness and
music courses, while group trips to places like the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Hilberry Theater and even mystery dinners are aimed at adults and seniors. While courses may come and go, L’Anse Creuse Community Education runs throughout the year. “We don’t stop,” said Debbie Verkest, L’Anse Creuse’s community education secretary. “When schools are closed, we run sum-
mer programs.” For more information about L’Anse Creuse Community Education visit lc-ps. org/programs/community-education.
