Catalpa Oaks honors Vincent Gregory with pavilion dedication BY KATHRYN PENTIUK kpentiuk@candgnews.com

SOUTHFIELD — The pavilion at Catalpa Oaks County Park was dedicated to Vincent

Gregory’s memory and legacy in a dedication ceremony on Sept. 18. The former senator, who passed on Oct. 21, 2022, at the age of 74, represented Southfield for a decade in the Michigan Legisla-

ture, as a state representative from 2009-2011 and then as a senator from 2011-2019. Gregory also served as an Oakland County commissioner from 1998 to 2008 and an Oak-

land County parks commissioner from 2003 to 2008. He attended Dundee High School in 1966 and Madonna University until he was drafted to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968 to 1970. After

his time in the Marines, he worked in the Wayne County Sheriff ’s Department from 1973 to 2003. Decades later, he returned to Madonna University and obtained a See GREGORY on page 10A

SOUTHFIELD — “She was beautiful inside and out,” Mia Kanu’s mother, Biana VanMeter, tearfully said at a press conference Southfield police held to update the public about Kanu’s untimely death. “She was just a very kind person, and from other people saying, ‘I thought it was over for me until I met Mia.’ And it was multiple people. And it was from different groups of friends. She just had a large group of friends. And everybody loved her.” Kanu, 23, died June 5, just two days after police found her in the middle of Providence Drive, in front of the Coach House Apartments, at 4:29 a.m. Months after the passing of the Tennessee State University veterinary student, Southfield Police Chief Elvin Fearn Barren held a press conference Sept. 21. Barren detailed the events that occurred on the night of June 3. Kanu had attended a house party with friends while home from college for the summer. She left the party with her friend, 23-year-old Kentia Fearn, the owner and driver of a 2022 silver Jeep Compass that Kanu fell from. Kanu was the backseat passenger of Fearn’s vehicle. Police showed surveillance footage from the night of the accident that revealed that Fearn continued to drive after Kanu fell from the vehicle. Barren showed the video, and he expressed his anger and disappointment surrounding the circumstances of Kanu’s death, asking what kind of friend doesn’t stop driving to turn the vehicle around to tend to a friend. “What kind of friend is that?” Barren said. Barren said there is no evidence to suggest that See ARREST on page 15A

bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2007. Yolanda Smith Charles, who has served on the Oakland County Parks Commission since 2021, met Gregory through attending community events when she was serving as a trustee for the Southfield Board of Education. She remembers Gregory as someone she would engage in fun conversations with and that he would always bestow some wisdom upon her during their talks. Smith Charles explained that it wasn’t until after Gregory passed that she learned more about his history and the integral role he played in the development of Catalpa Oaks. “I dug in a little bit more and found out that he had conversations with one of our older, who is also deceased now, city councilwomen in Southfield, Joan Seymour. Joan called Vince because he was an avid greenspace person and asked him what he could do because she didn’t want the space to become a condo. Apparently, that’s when Vince got busy. He was on the parks board. So it really warmed my spirit to learn that about his history this year. He passed just about a year ago, and he passed really unexpectedly. We were all taken by surprise. He just has such

a storied history. And now that I’m on the county board, kind of in a way, having followed in his footsteps. I’m also on the parks board. And so Catalpa is in my district.” Gregory was born on July 20, 1948, in Detroit, which was fitting, because his daughter, Vanessa Soloman, expressed that her father loved the summertime. “Summer holidays were his favorite holidays because they incorporated all the things that he loved: the summer and his family,” she said. Gregory was a family man and is survived by his wife of 44 years, Yvonne, and their five children and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Vincent Jr. Soloman expressed that the pavilion dedication at Catalpa means everything to their family. “He dedicated a lot of his time to working with the citizens of Oakland County and the state of Michigan. Just to have a small piece of something that we can share with our children is something that means a lot to us,” Soloman said. Gregory’s daughter, Kristen GregoryWebb, stated that she is “so honored and proud that my father’s legacy is being celebrated.” “He devoted his life to helping others and ensuring that his community was a

Clean energy from page 6A

“Why I do this work is I thought it was normal to smell like hydrogen sulfide after playing outside. I thought it was normal dodging that many trucks. I thought it was normal that everybody in my classroom had asthma. And as I got older and realized we were paying a huge toll in housing corporate polluters, and to our detriment,” native Detroiter Tlaib said. “I watched the pandemic layered on top of that, and many of our folks getting sicker and many dying at a higher rate because of preexisting conditions due to environmental injustices, including environmental racism, where many of these high polluting companies and folks were in neighborhoods that are already challenged, and also incredibly diverse.” Hoskins explained that the government has made the funds and grants on a local level more accessible, allowing local jurisdictions to apply and implement clean energy procedures in their communities. Perry shared that communities looking to apply for the clean energy grants can reach out to Michigan United for help with the grant writing process. Michigan United is a nonprofit dedicated to fighting for the rights of homeowners, renters, immigrant families

and students. “This is exactly what we do,” Perry stated. “We’ve worked with a few different municipal governments to get them to write a letter of intent, saying that they’re going to be applying for some of these grants and helping them with the actual grant process, letting them know when the deadlines are and what things are available.” Hoskins added that at the state level, representatives are given the opportunity to vote on allocating funds toward clean energy initiatives. Wegela said pending House environmental packages would help the state capture twice the amount of funding through the Inflation Reduction Act. “According to the math I’ve been looking at, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we have approximately five years, 380 days and now 17 hours to prevent a 1.5-degree Celsius increase in our climate,” Wegela said. The house bills that Wegela mentioned are HB 4759, which establishes a renewable portfolio standard of 60% by 2030 and a goal of 100% carbon-free energy by 2035; HB 4760, which allows the Michigan Public Service Commission to consider climate factors, affordability and equity in its decision-making, and requires them to abide by those decisions and HB 4761 which updates and expands the energy waste reduction

standards for utilities. It also revamps the timeline for meeting standards and measuring cost savings and prioritizes low-income communities to benefit from energy efficient programming. Byrnes expressed the importance of ensuring that there are “measurable, demonstrable outcomes” and language accessibility that is inclusive for the diverse communities across Michigan. Amani Johnson, a representative for Southfield Public Schools, said school districts are able to use grant funds towards solar panels, renewable energy, energy efficiency upgrades, lighting, heating and cool-

ing, and green transportation. “There’s the educational piece. Implementing all of these different environmental changes in our community, in our district, are opportunities to educate our students about climate change and have them interact with technology like solar panels,” Johnson said. “Maybe they’ll be interested in going into a green career at some point. And the last thing I’ll mention is more community gardens, more rooftop greenery, more green spaces. It’s also something that helps to reduce costs but provides benefits for our students.” See CLEAN ENERGY on page 18A

Kanu jumped from the vehicle. Her autopsy and toxicology report revealed that alcohol was found in her blood and was at 0.21%. Barren added that evidence suggests that Kanu may have been in the process of vomiting, as vomit was found in the seal of the door and in the roadway. Police also found a key fob to the Jeep, and Kanu’s phone. Barren stated that two separate search warrants were obtained: one to search the vehicle, and one for the Uconnect system. The vehicle was dusted for prints, revealing that only Kanu’s fingerprints were in the backseat. No blood evidence was found inside the vehicle. Fearn reported to police that following Kanu’s fall, she picked up a friend from a nearby apartment complex, and together, the two searched for Kanu. Fearn told police she noticed ambulance and police lights in the area of the incident but did not approach. Later that day, at 12:25 p.m., police said, Fearn went to the Southfield Police Department with a friend and said a physical altercation had occurred between her and her boyfriend while Kanu was asleep in the backseat. She stated that her boyfriend took her phone and drove off in his vehicle. She

then tried following his vehicle to retrieve her phone, but was unsuccessful in doing so. Fearn allegedly took Kanu’s phone to contact another friend, and reported that Kanu woke up and grabbed her phone back, and later fell from the vehicle. “The impact from the fall from the vehicle is the result of how Mia sustained her injury,” Barren said. After the fall, police said, Fearn visited the Detroit Police 5th Precinct to report her phone stolen — hours before she reported to Southfield police what had happened to Kanu. Detroit police noted that Fearn was intoxicated when she made the report. Barren said that evidence shows that Fearn was more concerned about getting her phone back from her boyfriend than calling 911 and tending to Kanu. Fearn was arrested Sept. 19, and the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office announced Sept. 20 that Fearn was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and operating while intoxicated. The first charge is a felony punishable by up to five years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $5,000. The second is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days imprisonment and/or up to a $500 fine. An attorney for Fearn could not be reached for comment at press time.

“The law requires anyone involved in an accident to stop and immediately report the accident to authorities. Leaving the scene when someone is seriously injured or dies is a felony. My office will hold those who do so accountable,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald stated in a press release. “We wanted everyone to know that

Mia loved Kentia,” said Lucina Reyes, Kanu’s grandmother. “So that’s what hurt, for her to just leave her there.” At the press conference, Kanu was remembered by friends and family as “Godfearing,” “kind,” and a “bright soul.” Call Staff Writer Kathryn Pentiuk at (586) 498-1070.

“It’s going to be cool because it’s going to be my first time being able to do an event back at Pontiac,” said Mosley, whose hometown is Pontiac. “When Johnny (Hamood) brought it up to me, it was hard for me to say no to that because this is my city. It’s close to home, and it’ll be cool for everyone around the area to come out and support.” Mosley will be signing T-shirts with the purchase of a meal at Lefty’s, and there will be photo opportunities and music for attendees as well. All tips that Lefty’s receives will go toward a charity of Mosley’s choosing. Lefty’s has had working relationships with football athletes in the past, including Barry Sanders and Darius Slay. With the location being just a few miles away from Mosley’s home in Pontiac, Hamood said it was a no-brainer to hold an event with Lefty’s. “It was really a match made in heaven being where (Tre’s) from,” Hamood said. “(Berry) has the stores out in Waterford, and he knew Tre and knows Tre’s father pretty well, so it really made a lot of sense to do something with Lefty’s.”

Ronald Isley launches Contagious Brandy in Southfield

On Sept. 29, Park Place Fine Wine and Liquor hosted an event that featured R&B legend Ronald Isley with his brand-new spirit, Ronald Isley Liquid Gold XO Contagious Brandy. Best known as the lead vocalist of the iconic Isley Brothers, he created classics including “For the Love of You,” “Shout” and “Contagious.” Now he’s venturing into the world of spirits. Why Detroit? “The last time we were in town was New Year’s Eve with Frankie Beverly. Detroit is one of our favorite spots. You know, Aretha Franklin ... was our best friend. When we would come to town, she would send us to new restaurants and say, ‘Ronnie, you gotta go try this place,’” Ronald Isley said. “I just love Detroit, and this is one of the first places that Contagious will be available.” Isley was on hand to sign bottles and take photos. Mosley

Lefty’s employees at the Waterford location and Mosley’s father, Bert Mosley, have had an ongoing friendship. He’s known as the man always sporting the Michigan State attire and talking to employees about his son. “My dad goes there all the time, which is crazy,” Tre Mosley said. “That exact location.” So when Tre Mosley and Hamood went to Lefty’s for the preliminary meeting before the event, the employees knew exactly who he was. “It’s funny because, when we met, all the guys behind the counter were like, ‘Oh, we know your pops. He always comes in with the Michigan State hoodie and talks about his son, the wide receiver,’” Hamood said. Mosley will also be working behind the counter during the event, which shouldn’t be a difficult task for the sure-handed wideout. Though it’ll be his first time behind the counter at Lefty’s, Mosley said he’s confident he’ll deliver. “I can do a little something-something,” Mosley said. Along with Seaman, Kara Liles, Elizabeth Coon, Amanda Mooradian, Madison Hool and Riley Spurgess, who all played sports in some capacity, helped build the recruiting platform for female athletes in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. State Champs! W, which started in 2021, will offer female athletes the opportunity to create an account on the recruiting platform, with multiple membership options available. W is currently working on another avenue to enhance its website by allowing athletes the ability to see the

coach or athlete to handle, so Seaman said the team felt the platform was an essential tool for athletes. “A lot of programs don’t have funding to go and travel around the country and see athletes, so this makes it easy for them,” Seaman said. “Some athletes just don’t have experience or their coaches don’t know how to get them recruited, so this is a place where they can go, make a profile and possibly get recruited.” Membership packages range from $9.99-$49.99 a month, with the starter package allowing an athlete to make a profile, insert their stats and add contact information to their profile. Higher price points include the starter items while also notifying athletes when a coach views their profile and allowing athletes the ability to add social media handles and highlight videos, an interview with the State Champs!
