SHELBY TOWNSHIP RESIDENT TAKES FIRST IN NATIONAL HORSE COMPETITION BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — They might have been the longest seconds of her life as Shelby Township resident Eryn Stanton awaited the results of the 2023 National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky. Stanton, 23, had competed in the 18-24 age group over the course of the week at the Taylor Harris Insurance Services National Horse Show Adult Equitation Championship, and against a field of 61 riders, only 10 remained in the final count on Oct. 29. “They announced placement starting at 10 and working backwards to one, so everybody got called out and it was just me and this other girl just standing and waiting,” Stanton said. “Of course they have to wait and play the music, and it’s all suspenseful and it feels like it’s taking forever, but really it’s not.” Stanton and her 9-year old horse, Echo, a Selle Français breed, have spent the last few years perfecting their craft together, and as the final name was called, all their hard work had come to fruition. “I honestly didn’t expect it because I had watched a couple of the other girls go before me, and they rode super, super well,” Stanton said. “I actually thought I was going to come in second. I had a really nice round and I was feeling confident, but the girl that went before me had a super, super nice round. I would’ve been happy with second. It felt surreal.” Stanton’s first-place finish was a rush of joy for her, Echo and head trainer Shannon Meehan. The competition consisted of three rounds that would decide the final score, as the riders competed in two jumping rounds, which evaluates the horses from jump to jump, and one flat round, which evaluates the accuracy and smoothness of the rider and the horse. “The goal is to always make it look easy, right?” Meehan said. “You want to make it look smooth and controlled, so a lot of times what they’re looking for and judging you on is your pace control, the consistency of the way you’re jumping, whether you’re leaving the ground too close, too far away or just right, things like that. That’s really what is going to give you those higher scores, that extra style and that extra technique.” Stanton and Echo took first in the first round, had a rough showing in the second round, but finished strong with a third-place performance in the flat round to come out with the win. Stanton and Echo had competed in the National Horse Show in 2022, finishing in the top 24, but Stanton said they had their sights set on coming back strong. “The last two years, we’ve been working towards this goal of going to Kentucky and competing in this class,” Stanton said. “Last year, we went for the first time and it was his first time doing something like that. Everything was fine, but we didn’t do as well as we probably could have.” Stanton was awarded ribbons with the

year of the competition engraved on them, silver plates with competition information, and a championship blanket for Echo. Their relationship has come a long way since Stanton found Echo on Facebook in 2019, and from there the chemistry has blossomed. Stanton had to ship Echo from France to the Netherlands, and from there to his current home at Empire Farms in Chesterfield. Echo wasn’t too familiar with the competitive scene when Stanton first rode him, but after many months of training together, a special bond developed between the two. “He’s kind of like a big dog to be honest,” Stanton said. “He’s not very smart. I will say that. There’s been many, many times where he’s been in his stall and he’s went to turn around and absolutely bashed his head against the side of the stall. He’s just not aware of his surroundings and how big he is, but he’s really sweet and he’s a good boy.” Stanton and Echo will look to defend their title next year as the returning champions, and Meehan said Stanton has only improved year after year as a rider. “I think she’s put a lot of time into it,” Meehan said. “Like any sort of skill you have, it takes practice, it takes a lot of work, and it takes a lot of determination to kind of make sure you’re putting in the effort.”

Peek Inside Your Health: Full Body MRI Screenings Unveil Silent Issues Before Symptoms Arise SOUTHFIELD- Full body MRI clinics have gained national attention lately, as TV personalities publicly share their personal full body scan experiences. One actress credits the scan for saving her life after doctors dismissed her unexplained pain for months. After various tests, including a CT scan, had “unremarkable” results, the pregnant actress became her own advocate, searched out a full body MRI clinic and discovered she had pancreatic cancer. Thanks to early detection the tumor was removed successfully. As a general rule, when symptoms occur related to cancer, it usually has progressed to stage three or four. Even with annual physicals, there are limitations. Most screenings only cover about 29% of cancers with 71% occur-

ring outside of where doctors are able to screen. However, full body MRI scans can detect cancer in every organ from the top of the head through the genitals and can detect it very early. For a long time, full body MRI scans were available only in select areas outside of Michigan, requiring expensive flights like in Vancouver or California. However, this changed when a clinic opened in Southfield, making these scans available to Metro Detroit residents. “Our advanced MRI screening can detect cancers very early when they are as small as a pencil eraser and are more easily treatable. If cancer goes undetected, however, it can grow into stage three or stage four with difficult treatments. We can also identify conditions

such as brain, abdominal, chest, and groin aneurysms,” stated the founder of the Southfield clinic called Bionicc Body Screening. The primary focus of Bionicc Body Screening is to deliver peace of mind, offering a comprehensive and detailed imaging of the body’s internal structures. The ultimate hope is for excellent health. However, in the event that something is detected, the advanced screening aims to catch any potential issues at their earliest stages. This approach offers the best opportunity for successful treatment outcomes, should the need arise. Robert B., age 50, opted for a full body scan from Bionicc Body Screening and a very small tumor was detected. He said, “It saved my

In their trial against Michigan State University, NU won a scoring judge’s ballot and MSU won the other judge’s ballot,” DeLois Leapheart, the mock trial team coach, said in a press release. Leapheart thanked assistant coaches Stephen Dunn and Jacob Walters for their efforts. A second Northwood University mock trial team, made up mostly of students who had never competed before, won its trials against State University of New York Geneseo and La Salle University but lost against Case Western Reserve University and Ohio University. Northwood University is located in Midland.

EPA is conducting its sixth five-year review of the Liquid Disposal, Inc. Superfund site in Utica, Michigan. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. A summary of the cleanup activities and an evaluation of the protectiveness of the implemented cleanup remedies will be included in the five-year review report, which is expected to be completed September 2024. The 6.8-acre site formerly held a commercial liquid industrial waste incineration facility that accepted wastes from major automobile manufacturers, chemical companies and other industries around the state. Site facilities included scrubber and oil lagoons, surface and underground storage tanks, and drums. Poor storage practices and spills contaminated soil and groundwater. Following several short-term cleanups, the site’s long-term remedy was completed in 1997. The long-term remedy included disposal of debris, extraction and treatment of groundwater, groundwater monitoring, a landfill slurry wall and cap, and land use restrictions. Regular operation and maintenance activities are ongoing. The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have. You are welcome to contact the Community Involvement Coordinator or Remedial Project Manager with comments. More information is available online at www.epa.gov/superfund/liquid-disposal.

Shelby Township Fine Art Society announces winners of juried show BY KARA SZYMANSKI kszymanski@candgnews.com

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Fine Art Society has a show being held at The Shelby Township Library until Nov. 22. Earlier this month, the society announced the winners of the juried show. Barb Galster won first place for her watercolor, “A Walk in the Park.” Galster said she was influenced to do her piece because of the weather outside. “The painting, ‘A Walk in the Park,’ began as I remember an actual fall afternoon with my husband and grandchildren. Different species of leaves were swirling around us like a dance. I collected an assortment and began using their shapes and colors to plan a whimsical re-creation of our day together. My watercolor leaves became trees, which became a sanctuary for birds, which became wonderful to walk,” she said. Marianne Ochalek won second place with her piece, “Sunflowers in Bloom.” “I love the dynamic and dramatic play that sunflowers bring to a painting. This piece is a combination of pen and watercolor. Depth in the background of leaves and tangled growth was developed through the addition of multiple layers of watercolor and pen,” she said. Diane Mueller won third place for “The Sea Meets the Sky.” She said she painted “The Sea Meets the Sky” in watercolor from a photo she took while on Grand Turk Island for the day. “One of our cruise ship stops. The sky seemed to flow right into the water. It was a beautiful day and I wanted to capture the peacefulness and beauty of it,” she said. Honorable mentions went to “Sunlight,” by Al Sonnenberg; “Sunny Sunflowers,” by Sylvia Myers; and “Free Style Swim,” by Cathy McCarthy. Sonnelberg said that while walking before noon along the beach just east of Port Austin, he saw an outcropping of sandstone and a cottage at water’s edge. “The bright sunlight made it so appealing, and since I had my sketch pad along for just such an occasion, I sat down and drew it. Sometime later at home I painted it. I really like this watercolor picture of the sunflower. It made me feel good painting it and I am so happy the judge liked it. I would like to also say how much I enjoy the STFAS and all that they do,” Myers said. Call Staff Writer Kara Szymanski at (586) 498-1029.

Big, Bright Light show kicks off to help brighten the holiday season BY MARY BETH ALMOND malmond@candgnews.com

Shoppers stroll along Main Street in downtown Rochester during a previous Lagniappe event, admiring the kickoff of the Big, Bright Light Show.

I

t isn’t the holidays until Main Street in Rochester shines with a light display that puts Clark Griswold’s house from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” to shame. This year, downtown Rochester was slated to officially transform into a glimmering spectacle when the Big, Bright Light Show switch was flipped Monday, Nov. 20, during the 50th annual Lagniappe event. At 6 p.m. on East Fourth Street, the Big, Bright Light Show program was slated to begin with help from Rochester Mayor Stuart Bikson, Channel 7 and a special appearance by Santa Claus. The 18th annual Big, Bright Light Show will be set aglow with 15 colors of LED lights. The lights are a huge attraction, according to Kristi Trevarrow, the executive director of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority. “Especially coming into our 18th year of Big, Bright, it’s less of an event and more of a tradition. It’s always part of the holiday conversation: ‘When are we going to see the lights?’” Trevarrow said. “Everybody always wants to come see the lights because your holidays wouldn’t be complete without that trip, and we appreciate that people

We have always said we are in the memory-making business, and I think that the Big, Bright Light Show is at the pinnacle of that.” The Big, Bright Light Show, the largest event hosted by downtown Rochester, will continue to run 5 p.m.-midnight through Jan. 21. “The lights are a great excuse to come out with your family, grab a hot cocoa, do a little holiday shopping, and just get your Christmas spirit on,” said Trevarrow. Memorial Park is next to the library. Collections for toys began Nov. 1 and will run through Dec. 9. The goal is that no child will go without a gift this holiday season. “To make this a successful event, please continue to share on social media. Our goal is that no child goes without a gift this holiday season,” said Michael Ryan, a paramedic/firefighter at the Utica Fire Department and a member of the Utica City Council. Mayor Gus Calandrino said the Utica Fire Department organizes the city’s Toys for Tots campaign every year, and it does a “wonderful” job. “Last year, they collected over 2,500 toys worth over $35,000. Through the hard work of the Utica Fire Department, hundreds of kids were able to enjoy Christmas. Every kid deserves to feel loved and cherished and I thank our Utica Fire Department for all the work they do in our community;

especially during the Toys for Tots Christmas campaign,” he said. Call Staff Writer Kara Szymanski at (586) 498-1029.

Utica names winners of its annual Halloween home decoration contest BY KARA SZYMANSKI kszymanski@candgnews.com

UTICA — Spooky season is over and the annual Halloween home decoration contest winners in Utica have been announced. This year, the winners are Janet Bezdziecki, of MacKay Court, and Christine Reese, of Cass Avenue. The prize for each winner is a $25 gift certificate from Sarge and Red’s Toys and Collectibles and two tickets to the Reptarium. Stacie Bilby, from Utica, said her family helps Mayor Gus Calandrino with the decoration contests in Utica. The Halloween home decoration contest was posted on Utica’s Facebook page Oct. 15. People voted by liking the pictures of the decorated homes that they wanted to win. “The contests are always so much fun. My daughters and I have a blast taking pictures, talking to people about their efforts and the sense of community it brings to Utica. Watching the votes tally up on the pictures is such a joy. It seems that since

we started the contests, not only are more people decorating, but more are voting as well. Utica has such a sweet hometown feel and highlighting everyone’s artistic flair at holiday time just helps bring us all together,” Bilby said. Calandrino said the annual contest started when he posted online some pictures of homes that were decorated for Halloween a few years ago.

“The post was so popular, I decided to take many more photos and make it a contest. I’d like to thank the Reptarium and Sarge and Red’s Toys for sponsoring the prizes. Due to the popularity of the contest, we decided to have two winners this year; one winner from the neighborhoods east of Van

Dyke, and one winner from the neighborhoods west of Van Dyke,” Calandrino said. He thanked Bilby and her family for helping take the pictures and organize the contest. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without their help,” Calandrino said.

SHELBY LIONS CROWNED OMYFA SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS SPORTS BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — It’s rare that the words “Lions” and “Super Bowl” are uttered in the same sentence, but 2023 has brought the combination of words to the forefront. We’re not talking about the Detroit Lions; the freshman Shelby Lions of the Oakland/Macomb Youth Football Association are too busy claiming their spot as the No. 1 Lions team in the state of Michigan. As the Lions took the field as the underdog against the Romeo Bulldogs, a team that has bested the Lions in back-toback Super Bowls, it was the Lions ground game that would seal the Super Bowl victory in a 27-6 win on Nov. 5 at Hurley Field in Berkley. The Shelby Lions are a youth football team in the OMYFA that offers four different levels of football depending on age groups with flag (6-7), freshmen (8-9), junior varsity (1011), and varsity (12-13). The Lions were solid in the freshman division this season, finishing the regular season with a 5-3 record, while Romeo remained unbeaten throughout the year. Similar to the 2007 Super Bowl where the 10-6 New York Giants faced off against the unbeaten New England PaSee SHELBY LIONS on page 22A

Macomb emergency services simulate mass casualty event BY DEAN VAGLIA dvaglia@candgnews.com

MACOMB COUNTY — The Macomb County EMS Medical Control Authority conducted a full-scale simulation of a mass casualty event at Kensington Church in Clinton Township on the morning of Nov. 8. Over 200 participants from EMS and fire agencies, law enforcement, dispatch, emergency management and the Region 2 North Healthcare Coalition hospitals took part in the simulation to test and develop response strategies to mass casualty events. “The safety and well-being of our community are top priorities,” said Macomb

County Executive Mark Hackel in a press release. “Collaborative exercises like these play a crucial role in ensuring our emergency response teams are well prepared and equipped to handle any unforeseen challenges they may face.” According to Macomb County officials, responding to events like mass shootings require a certain degree of planning and coordination between public safety and emergency management agencies. Events happen quickly — the November 2021 Oxford High School shooting took place over four minutes — requiring response efforts to be quick as well.

Kuntz said it’s a difficult transition at first for his players, but by the end of the year, they’re looking to make contact with anyone and everyone on the field. “The development throughout the year was fantastic, but you can definitely see kids that are a little timid at first,” Kuntz said. “They’re afraid of taking a hit and giving the hit. By the time we get to the end of the year, they’re football players and they know what’s expected of them. They don’t play with fear anymore. They play with technique.” The Shelby Lions freshman and junior varsity cheer squads also brought home first place this year in cheer and dance at the OMYFA Cheer Off on Nov. 4 at Birmingham Groves High School. triots, the Lions turned on the jets when the games mattered most. “We fought through some injuries and some other challenges throughout the year, and I think we just ended up peaking at the right time,” Lions freshman coach Jim Kuntz said. Usually more of a finesse team on the field, the Lions switched their style of play this season after receiving some strong personnel in the trenches. While still having their traditional athletes who can break a long run at any given handoff, the Lions showcased more of a ground-and-pound style of offense this season. “We kind of set up this year to run some power football for the first time in Shelby Lions, I don’t want to say Shelby Lions history, but since my involvement here for the last six years,” Kuntz said. “We actually brought in some new kids to join the program this year, and we actually had a big, strong and sizable line that could just push other teams around. Typically, Shelby is skill kids with speed to the outside and use some razzle-dazzle sort of plays. This was just line up, helmet-tohelmet, run up the middle and get 5 yards a pop, and just try to drive the ball down the field.” While the Lions archive department isn’t exact on its last Super Bowl win, it’s believed that the last Lions Super Bowl at any level was over a decade ago, which is still sooner than the last Detroit Lions playoff win. It’s impressive that the guys can line up

GROSSE POINTE CITY — Police were investigating after an unknown suspect is said to have stolen an estimated $95 worth of soap products from The Village CVS store at around 3:30 p.m. Nov. 2.

Armed man reported at park

GROSSE POINTE PARK — Police were called to Patterson Park at around 4:20 p.m. Oct. 28 after a man was said to have been seen in the parking lot with a handgun. When officers got there, they said they found the suspect alone in his vehicle with the gun. According to a report, the man was intoxicated. Police said they arrested the man — a 67-year-old from Grosse Pointe Park — and secured his weapon without incident. The suspect could be facing a charge of possession of a firearm while intoxicated, police said.

Vehicle with medical equipment stolen

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — An unknown suspect is said to have stolen a doctor’s vehicle while it was parked in the north lot of Ascension St. John Hospital between the hours of 6:15 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. Oct. 20. Besides the vehicle, the suspect got away with the victim’s wallet and an estimated $40,000 worth of equipment used for surgeries, according to a police report.

Resident reports phone harassment

GROSSE POINTE SHORES — A 46-year-old Grosse Pointe Shores woman filed a report with police Oct. 19 after she said she got a series of calls and texts from an unknown person starting at 5 p.m. Oct. 18 from a phone number with a 248 area code. The victim told police she let all the calls go to voicemail, but the caller never left her a message. After the calls, she said the person texted her from the same number at 7:45 p.m. Oct. 18. The message referred to the victim by an expletive and warned her to watch her back because the suspect knew “where you live in Grosse Pointe,” according to a police report. The victim said her husband blocked Caller ID and tried to call the suspect himself, but although the caller answered the phone twice, the caller never said anything. The victim told police she didn’t know who or why anyone might be angry with her. The case was turned over to the detective bureau for further investigation.

Fraud reported

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 11:17 a.m. on Oct. 24, a fraud report was made after an incident that occurred on Oct. 23 in the 27000 block of Little Mack Avenue.

Upon arrival, an officer was met by the manager of the business, a 27-year-old woman, who showed the officer video footage. The footage started at 9:25 p.m. on Oct. 24 and showed the suspect, an unknown man. The suspect is shown walking up to the counter and buying an item. He can be seen pulling money out of his pocket and paying for the item. According to the manager, the suspect told the clerk he wanted $500 on a Cash App card. He pulled money out of a different pocket and paid for it. The suspect reportedly bought two $500 gift cards using money from the same pocket. The footage does not show the suspect vehicle. The manager stated they were scammed out of $1,500 but the amount of counterfeit bills given to the officer totaled $1,560. The counterfeit bills were all $20 bills.

Fraud reported

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 2:56 p.m. on Oct. 19, a fraud report was made after an incident that occurred on the same day in the 27000 block of Jefferson Avenue. At the stated time on that date, the victim, a 58-year-old woman, walked into the police department to make a report. She stated she answered a Facebook ad to complete a survey for Walmart and receive money. The woman said a few days later, she received a check in the mail for $1,570.32 and began receiving text messages from a phone number instructing her to cash the check and send gift cards. The woman then went to a bank to cash the check and was notified that it was fraudulent. The woman did not send any gift cards and she did not lose any money.

Women arrested for Kohl’s shoplifting incident

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police reportedly went to Kohl’s, 44200 Schoenherr Road, Oct. 21 upon hearing that shoplifting was occurring. According to store staff, three women were putting items in bags while in the men’s section and then they allegedly took some bags full of merchandise out of the store without paying for it. The women had exited the store’s eastern doors and entered a Chevrolet sedan, and an officer reportedly spotted the vehicle taking off. Police said they tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle allegedly tried to get away, driving through a stop sign in the process. After a brief police pursuit, all three suspects reportedly exited the car. Police said they chased and arrested the trio, at one point reportedly using a stun gun in the process. Police retrieved the merchandise, valued at $1,130.25, from the car and a suspect’s purse and gave it back to Kohl’s.
