On Nov. 7, St. Clair Shores voters elected Ronald Frederick, Chris Vitale and Linda Bertges to serve on the City Council for the next four years. Frederick and Vitale are both incumbents. Bertges was elected to the seat being vacated by outgoing Councilman Peter Accica, who did not run for another term citing health issues and served at his last meeting on Oct. 16. Six candidates vied for the three City Council seats in this year’s election. Mayor Kip Walby ran unopposed. In the race for the three seats up for election this year, Frederick received the most votes with 6,744 (23.3%), followed by Vitale with 6,089 (21.0%) and Bertges with 5,323 (18.4%). Each will serve a four-year term. Bryan Owens finished fourth See COUNCIL on page 13A

Princeton Elementary School Principal Justin Cabe and Dean of Students Jen Donnelly spent a day up on the roof Nov. 3, much to the excitement of the students and parents. The two were up on the roof as a reward for the students at Princeton. They surpassed their initial fundraising goal of $35,000 at their Fun Run Oct. 6. This is their main fundraiser for the year and the money stays at Princeton Elementary School. “If they hit the goal of $35,000, they get to pick one of three choices,” Cabe said. Cabe said later on they also have sponsors for the Fun Run. “The money raised through the annual Fun Run event goes towards things for the students that are not paid for through the general fund, including transportation for field trips, supplies and technology upgrades,” Donnelly said in an email. “Many local businesses provided sponsorships and were represented on banners posted on the day of the (Fun Run).” The three reward choices the students were given were Donnelly and Cabe’s banishment to the roof for the day and into the evening, the students could try to dump water on them in a modified dunk tank, or Cabe and Donnelly would get taped to the wall inside the school.

Etched in history

People gather for a recent historical dedication at the Lake Shore Church. According to the plaque, the church’s beginning can be attributed to a group of women who formed a Ladies Aid Society in 1922 to help nurture children and embrace the community. In 1941, a new chapel was built and dedicated to accommodate the growing congregation. The previous chapel was then used as the public library for the Village of St. Clair Shores. On Sept. 30, 1923, they dedicated the church as it opened for Sunday morning worship.

METRO DETROIT — The holiday season is upon us, and that means that the sound of Salvation Army bell-ringers won’t be far behind. The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is seeking volunteer bell-ringers for the 2023 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign. The nonprofit requests the community’s support to help meet its $7.9 million fundraising goal. Each year, thousands of collection buckets are positioned in and around businesses to raise funds for those in need — and each is accompanied by The Salvation Army’s signature bell-ringers. The organization hopes to fill more than 50,000 hours of bell-ringing shifts across hundreds of kettle locations throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. “Our volunteer bell-ringers are the unsung heroes of the holiday season, making the season brighter for those in need across metro Detroit,” Maj. Toni Dorrell, general secretary and metro Detroit area commander, said in a press release. “Our volunteers

transform an unmanned kettle into one that raises the funds needed to meet the goal of the Christmas campaign.” The Salvation Army is committed to providing after-school programs, emergency disaster services, substance abuse treatment and free legal aid for families and individuals throughout metro Detroit, including more than 2.4 million meals and more than 530,000 nights of shelter each year. The iconic red kettles also will have a new look this year that makes it even easier to give with the addition of Tiptap, a touchless giving platform. Donors can give a set amount of $5, $10 or $20 with just a tap of their mobile phone, smartwatch, or any credit card set up for contactless payments. To help raise awareness and encourage the community to donate, the nonprofit is once again partnering with Scott Wolffis, the president and CEO of Commercial Alliance, as the 2023 Red Kettle Christmas chairman. Wolffis, who has served on The Salvation Army’s Metro Detroit Advisory Board for more than 15 years, will serve as the public face of the fundraising campaign for the sec-

LOOKING BACK: HOLMES HORSE FARM In this photo from 1948, Florence Holmes is seen on horse, Elsie, in front of one of the homes on the property at 20215 10 Mile Road. Florence and her husband, Fred J. Holmes, owned a fairly large tract of land at this address in the 1940s and 1950s. The original home seen in the photo was built about 1927. In 1940, another larger home was built next door; this home was later given the address of 20217. Additionally, there was a barn, a tack barn, a few other small outbuildings and a riding oval on the property. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Fred and Florence Holmes were involved in the Findlay’s Horse Shows, the first of which took place in 1945, possibly at the 10 Mile Road location. The horse shows took place across Michigan, and featured horse riding in various styles and demonstrations with horses and different types of horse-drawn buggies. In 2023, the two Holmes houses are still standing, but the rest of their land has been developed for singlefamily housing and Princeton Elementary School. ike Koch has a long history of volunteering with the Goodfellows and local school districts to help kids grow into outstanding citizens and young adults. Koch said he’s been volunteering with the St. Clair Shores Goodfellows for more than 30 years and that he is the president of the organization. He said he enjoys helping people and giving back to the community. Growing up, giving back to the community was instilled in him by his parents. “We, as a family, were always involved, whether it was church activities or community activities,” Koch said. “So growing up, that was just always part of my life and it’s continued on.” During November and December, the St. Clair Shores Goodfellows are the most active. They’re motto is “No Kiddie Without a Christmas.” Local school districts throughout the months of November and December will collect nonperishable food for the Goodfellows. Through the help of Scout groups, the food is sorted at the North Fire Station in St. Clair Shores to make gift baskets. “Those gift baskets will be distributed to needy families within the city of St. Clair Shores Christmas Eve morning,” Koch said. They host a newspaper sale the first Saturday of December to raise funds to help needy families during the Christmas season. The funds are used for purchasing perishable items such as turkeys and stuffing and other things. An interview process takes place for the families to get more details about their needs and the size of the family. “And for every child that lives in the city of St. Clair Shores that comes from a needy

family, we will give the parents a gift card so that they can then go out and purchase Christmas presents for their children,” Koch said. Koch said he has several memories from helping with the Goodfellows. Some of those memories are made when he’s out on the streets selling the papers. “Someone will come up and make a very generous donation to us,” Koch said. “And it never fails, every person that does that always tells the same story that, ‘When I

was little, if it wasn’t for the Goodfellows, my family would not have had a Christmas.’” He said some people they’ve helped are doing better and feel it’s important to give back to the Goodfellows. The papers they sell don’t have a price and they’re thankful for any donations they get. Koch worked at the Morley and Sanders candymakers for 49 years before retiring. He stated he did everything at the company and that before he retired, he was one of the co-owners.

In 2016, he was given the Candy Industry Kettle Award, which is given to someone who has dedicated their life to the industry and has also bettered the industry itself. This award is given to one person a year throughout all the candy industry. “I’ve done a lot to help, you know, not just our company, but to help out our industry as a whole and that’s why I received the Kettle Award,” Koch said. He was also a Cub Scouts scoutmaster and helped with his son’s Boy Scouts troop. He said he enjoyed helping the boys learn new things. “The life skills they can learn from that will last forever for them,” Koch said. “So again, teaching them to be good citizens and learning the things that you know they need to do to succeed in life.” He also volunteers at Lake Shore Schools with the band boosters, the athletic boosters and as an announcer for football games and basketball games. The most memorable part of his time at the school district is getting to see the kids succeed and grow. “To me that’s the rewarding part, is to see them succeed,” Koch said. People have come up to Koch and said thank you for his good deeds. He sees it especially when he gives out the baskets of food during the Christmas holiday. “I’ve shared tears with people because, you know, they give you a hug and they’re so overwhelmed with, you know,” Koch said. “And that’s what makes me keep coming back is when you see that emotion on someone.” He added that needing help from an organization such as the Goodfellows doesn’t mean that someone is a bad person. “We’re here to help all of those people,” Koch said. “We don’t judge anyone. If you need help, we want to help you.” Koch said more people should volunteer and help out in their community. With the

Goodfellows, Koch said, the two main opportunities to volunteer are the newspaper sales and giving out the baskets. He said for both events they have people show up year after year. “The amazing thing is, you come one year to help deliver food baskets Christmas Eve,” Koch said. “You will be back the next year. You go into someone’s home Christmas Eve morning with several baskets of food and a turkey, and it just warms your heart that you’ve brought some joy to somebody’s house.” He went on to say that without volunteers, an organization like theirs wouldn’t exist and it’s important to have volunteers. He said it’s important for people to get involved, whether it be with Goodfellows or a local school, and help out the children. “If we can help the kids out, they’re going to grow up to be better people, better citizens and learn that they’re appreciated,” Koch said. “And you know if you start at a young age helping them out, they’re going to grow up to be really good people in my mind.” Call Staff Writer Alyssa Ochss at (586) 498-1103.

continued partnership between Commercial Alliance and The Salvation Army and the positive impact this relationship will have on our community.” Dorrell said that such funds are more important than ever. “With the rising cost of living, economic insecurity and inflation, families in metro Detroit are facing financial uncertainty. Some may lack proper shelter, a warm meal or may even be choosing between paying rent and buying presents this Christmas,” Dorrell wrote. “We owe it to our neighbors in need to come together and lend a helping hand when times get tough. When you give to The Salvation Army, your donation makes it possible for us to help our community’s most vulnerable 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.” Vitale said he feels very humbled. “When you get told that people appreciate your work it’s very humbling,” Vitale said. He also said this election was a tight race with good opponents and campaigns. “This was no walk in the park,” Vitale said. Bertges said her main goal is making sure that St. Clair Shores continues to be a great place to live, work and play. “I love my city and I’m very excited to be elected and move the city forward,” Bertges said.

Big, Bright Light show kicks off to help brighten the holiday season BY MARY BETH ALMOND malmond@candgnews.com

I

t isn’t the holidays until Main Street in Rochester shines with a light display that puts Clark Griswold’s house from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” to shame. This year, downtown Rochester was slated to officially transform into a glimmering spectacle when the Big, Bright Light Show switch was flipped Monday, Nov. 20, during the 50th annual Lagniappe event. At 6 p.m. on East Fourth Street, the Big, Bright Light Show program was slated to begin with help from Rochester Mayor Stuart Bikson, Channel 7 and a special appearance by Santa Claus. The 18th annual Big, Bright Light Show will be set aglow with 15 colors of LED lights. The lights are a huge attraction, according to Kristi Trevarrow, the executive director of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority. “Especially coming into our 18th year of Big, Bright, it’s less of an event and more of a tradition. It’s always part of the holiday conversation: ‘When are we going to see the lights?’” Trevarrow said. “Everybody always wants to come see the lights because your holi-

Have strategies if you want to avoid conflict, anxiety during holidays BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com

METRO DETROIT — The Thanksgiving turkey is fresh out of the oven, the mashed potatoes are ready and the Christmas tree lights are twinkling. It’s time to eat, but tension is also on the menu. That’s because, in many cases, the conversation around the dinner table has turned into a political debate, with family members in opposite camps. When someone shares an opinion on the current state of the country, it turns into a heated argument. The hearts are racing, the fists are clenched and the voices become louder. It’s like Archie Bunker and Michael Stivic in the 1970s sitcom “All in the Family.” But this isn’t a comedy show, and holiday conflict with family is something that could arise. One offhand remark could set off another guest. Add alcohol into the mix, and tempers flare. Some people thrive on debating hot topics — religion, politics, sports, the COVID-19 pandemic — while others want

to hide inside their Christmas stockings and wait for the holiday hostility to end. If you want to avoid tension during the holidays, there are some strategies you can try, said Carrie Krawiec, a licensed marriage See CONFLICT on page 19A

counselor and family therapist from the Birmingham Maple Clinic. “There are people who are conflict prone and some who are conflict avoidance,” Krawiec said. “You can only control your behavior.” One way to cut down on the disharmony is to ask your guests to wait until after dinner to hold a heated discussion or tell them politely not to debate around the children present. Going into the garage to continue a tense conversation is another option. Also, think about the way your comments might come across to others, and remember that people have their own beliefs, values and opinions that might not align with yours. During holiday visits, there are different family roles, too, that play into the dynamics of the get-together. “There’s the class clown, the people pleaser, the black sheep and the know-it-all,” Krawiec said. “They invoke different reactions for different reasons.” Bringing up the past can be a pleasant experience for some, but it also can bring up bad memories. “Memories and traditions may be differ-

ent,” Krawiec. “One family member might remember something fondly, and others not so much. That could cause us to question ourselves.” However, conflict is not always “a bad thing,” Krawiec said. It can sometimes make the conversation more interesting or get people to look at situations in a different way. “Sometimes I like to hear people’s thoughts,” she said. “It can be very invigorating.” But if the atmosphere gets too heated, take a few minutes for yourself, Krawiec suggested, such as a visit to the bathroom, moving into another room or taking a walk around the block “to let the moment pass.” Deep breathing can also calm a person’s nerves. If you feel like you might need to leave altogether, should tension arise, figure out a code word ahead of time with family. Say the code word to your spouse and children in an unassuming way so they know it’s time to leave. There are also individuals who feel social anxiety when invited to parties. Krawiec said that “it’s very common” to feel anxious when going to someone’s house where you don’t know anyone. One suggestion is to try to meet someone who will be at the gather-

District to levy the statutory limit of 18 mills on all property, except principal residences and other property exempted by law which currently expires with the School District’s 2024 tax levy and allow the School District to continue to levy the statutory limit of 18 mills in the event of future Headlee rollbacks of up to 3 mills.” “The authorization will allow the School District to continue to receive revenues at the full per pupil foundation allowance permitted by the State,” the proposal language read. Under the 1978 Headlee Amendment to the Michigan Constitution, if the tax base of a local unit of government is increased, the tax rate on that base must be proportionally reduced so property tax revenues will increase no more than the rate of inflation for that year. The Headlee Amendment limited the amount of taxes a school district and other entities could collect as property values go up. If a property value goes up too much, it will enact a Headlee rollback that decreases the levy; thus, the amount of tax dollars collected through the millage, Paulson said previously. “So this vote in November is to renew and replace lost millage from prior Headlee rollback,” Pauslon said before the election. The amendment allows the district to ask for more mills than the allotted 18. Even with the increased number of mills, the district will still only collect 18. “We have to ask for more to avoid the 18 becoming 17.8, becoming 17.5, becoming 17.0, because the state pot of money, remember the big pot over here that’s most of our money, assumes we’re collecting 18 maximum, locally,” Paulson said in October. Homestead properties will not be affected by the proposal, which will affect only industrial, commercial and other properties that are not primary residences. It does not increase the amount of homestead school property taxes collected, according to a newsletter sent out by the district. Call Staff Writer Alyssa Ochss at (586) 498-1103.

days wouldn’t be complete without that trip, and we appreciate that people have made us a part of their holidays. That is amazing to us. We have always said we are in the memorymaking business, and I think that the Big, Bright Light Show is at the pinnacle of that.” The Big, Bright Light Show, the largest event hosted by downtown Rochester, will continue to run 5 p.m.-midnight through Jan. 21. “The lights are a great excuse to come out with your family, grab a hot cocoa, do a little holiday shopping, and just get your Christmas spirit on,” said Trevarrow. ing beforehand. Or plan on just staying for a while and not all night if you feel uncomfortable. “You can stay if it’s pleasant enough,” Krawiec said. “It’s an opportunity for you to get out if you’re alone for the holidays. Someone cared about you enough to include you.” Pontus Leander, associate professor of social psychology and director of Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at Wayne State University, said that while “it’s not always possible,” the party host can provide a gentle reminder of the norms and expectations. “They can do it in a light and fun way,” Leander said. “You don’t want people to feel controlled. If the host is not able to set norms and expectations, recognize your own boundaries and limits. Just because someone says something does not mean we need to react. Don’t take the bait. You can only control your responses. Sometimes silence is the right response.” Other guests not involved in a tense conversation also could take on the role of peacemaker. “Bystanders have the power to disrupt the flow of the conversation,” Leander said.

“If you see it getting uncomfortable, ask, ‘Can you guys talk after dinner or at another time?’ This signals to them this is not the time or place. Other people might be relieved as well.” Leander pointed out that holiday get-togethers are different now because people can keep in touch all year via social media. “We are living in a very modern communication environment. People have a way of interacting all year round. Everyone already knows what everyone is doing. It’s not how it was 20 or 30 years ago when we used to see each other once a year,” he said. “People say harmful things online and you see them at the holidays. They feel this is their chance to push back.” If you find yourself getting worked up, take a 10-second break. “Your mind and body will coordinate and be OK again,” Leander said. Leander suggested writing down ideas of what to talk about when visiting with family and friends. “Make a list of what would be nice to know about them and what people are excited about. That will let them speak,” Leander said. “They’ll find the conversation more meaningful. It does take effort from everyone. If a conflict occurs, ask a new question.” Call Staff Writer Maria Allard at (586) 498-1045.

“At the PTO meeting, there was a challenge of if we doubled our goal would Mr. Cabe and Mrs. Donnelly do all three and we said yes,” Cabe said. “Obviously, we more than doubled. We ended up coming in at just under $84,000.” The total amount of money raised during the Fun Run was $83,226. While on the roof, they greeted the students as they came into school and played with the students at recess. They also had a desk up on the roof and were still working throughout the day. At the end of the day, they dropped around 30 pounds of candy to the children, Cabe said. “And we stayed on the roof into the evening and then at 7 o’clock that night we read a bedtime story through Facebook live,” Cabe said. “And we each read a bedtime story, and told all the kids to have a good weekend, and that was kind of the end of the day.” Donnelly said in an email they tried to get work done, but the wind made it difficult. Both said it was a bit chilly as well. “In fact, a stack of papers that Mr. Cabe took up ended up blowing off the roof!”

CRIME WATCH Theft reported on Harper Avenue

At 5:25 p.m. on Nov. 5, a report was made about a retail theft that occurred on the same day in the 28000 block of Harper Avenue. Upon arrival, an officer spoke with the caller, an employee, who stated he had multiple pictures of the suspect vehicle and its license plate. The suspect had come into the store twice that day. The first time, he purchased a canister used to generate whipped cream with nitrous oxide gas, worth around $100. The second time he came in, he stole another canister and walked out without paying. The employee said this suspect has stolen from them in the past. The officer spoke to the owner over the phone who stated he wanted to prosecute the suspect since he didn’t listen to his previous warnings. The officer told the owner to save the photos and security footage for detectives. Another officer spoke briefly with the suspect over the phone. A sergeant was able to locate the suspect at an apartment complex. He was parked behind the buildings. The two officers could see the suspect, a 45-year-old man, sitting in the driver’s side, apparently inhaling nitrous oxide. The vehicle was locked, and he was told mul-

tiple times to unlock it. The suspect continued inhaling and refused to open the door. Eventually the suspect opened the door but refused to get out of the vehicle. An officer took the canister out of the suspect’s hands. The suspect grabbed onto the steering wheel at the same time and refused to exit the vehicle as another officer tried to pull the suspect out of the driver’s side. A struggle ensued before the officers and sergeant were able to get the suspect out of the car, into handcuffs and into the rear seat of a police car without further incident. The suspect’s vehicle was impounded. The vehicle next to the suspect’s vehicle was scratched and the owner was notified and gave officers their information for insurance purposes. On the way to the police station, the suspect was informed multiple times he was no longer welcome at the business and that he would be charged for trespassing if he showed up. The suspect reportedly said he understood.

Theft reported on 11 Mile Road

On Nov. 7, a report was made about a case of retail theft that occurred the previous day, Nov. 6, in the 20000 block of 11 Mile Road. Upon arrival at the business, an officer spoke to the manager, a 30-year-old woman, who stated that around midnight, two men entered the store and asked the employee, a

21-year-old woman, for assistance near the back of the store. At that time, another man allegedly went behind the counter and stole lottery tickets in the amount of approximately $460. The manager gave the officer a spreadsheet listing the stolen tickets.

Theft reported on Eight Mile

At 2:35 p.m. on Nov. 2, a report was made about a larceny that occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. the same day in the 20000 block of Eight Mile Road. The victim, a 70-year-old man, came into the police station and said that his iPhone

was stolen from a gym locker room. The man said he arrived at the gym in the morning and changed in the locker room. He accidentally left his iPhone on the bench and proceeded with his workout. A short time later, he realized his iPhone was missing and checked the locker room. The man said he told a worker at the gym who performed a phone locator search. The search marked the phone in the city of Detroit. The same search was run at the police station, and it showed it to be east of Van Dyke and south of Outer Drive. The phone was called multiple times, but it went to voicemail. — Alyssa Ochss

Roof Donnelly said in the email. “One of our visitors happily collected all of them!” Donnelly said in an email that the parents were very supportive during their time on the roof. “Some offered snacks and hot beverages. Many waved and chatted with us when dropping off and picking up their students,” Donnelly said in the email. Cabe said and Donnelly said in an email the students and the parents had fun fundraising for the school. Cabe said there were incentives for the students to raise more money, including a pizza party for the top class, drawings and others. The day of the Fun Run, the students received class shirts, the parents could buy fence panels and also tailgate outside with coffee and doughnuts. “Parents decorated the fence panels, and they were able to sit there, and the students ran for about an hour around our baseball diamond,” Cabe said. Parents who did not buy a fence panel could still watch their students, Cabe said. The first time they implemented the single fundraiser was about eight years ago. Over the years, the fundraising goal has increased. Cabe said they’ve always hit their goal every year and then some. The first goal was $20,000 and they raised around $40,000. Cabe said he is taken aback by the support and generosity. “My teachers and staff and I, we work hard every day to build the Princeton community to what is and to support our students and families and the whole child,” Cabe said. “It makes me happy to know that parents recognize that and they support us.” Call Staff Writer Alyssa Ochss at (586) 498-1103.

Emily’s DeliA Holiday Tradition Neighborhood places come and go all the time. New spots to eat open and close, sometimes before the residents really even get a chance to know the owners. That’s definitely not the case at Emily’s, the Order ahead for these “Home of the Meat Pie.” The Lebanese carry out Holiday Favorites! delicatessen on Mack, south of Nine Mile Road, has been a neighborhood favorite for over 50 years. Cocktail Size Meat Pies, “Everything here is my mom’s recipes,” said Spinach Pies & Chicken Pies, Sam Hakim Sr., whose family still prepares the Kibbee Soneyeh”Stuffed food fresh each day, using the same recipes and Grape Leaves: ingredients. “The meat pies, the spinach pies. We Qtr., Half and Full Roasters make raw and baked kibbee, lots of grape leaves and lots of hummus and tabbouleh. Everything is the same.” The recipe for success, he said, has been consistency and familiarity. “When we started back then, everything, every region, Lebanon, Italy, they all had their way that things were supposed to taste,” Sam said. “Our recipes are very consistent, the same spices. Everybody has a different way to do things. Our longevity is due to good food, good service and the family being here all the time. It’s just the basic things.” Consistency and familiarity goes for the food, and the customers at Emily’s. New patrons show up all the time, thanks to the food’s reputation, but each day brings back familiar faces who stop in for lunch, drop by for a few meat pies—with just the right amount of spiced lamb, onions, pine nuts and lemon-- when they’re back in town, or pick up an order for an office meeting or family gathering. “If you’re a young kid, you’ve been coming here since you were 10 years old,” Sam said. “When you come back to visit your family in St. Clair Shores or Grosse Pointe, wherever you’re going, one of your first stops is here. It happens all the time.” Sam would know. He’s been at Emily’s since day one, working with his mother, and now alongside his son, Sam Jr. “He learned everything from my mother,” Sam Sr. said. “She taught him what to make and how to cook. He’s absolutely terrific.” Emily’s is located at 22205 Mack in St. Clair Shores and is open seven days. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. GROSSE POINTE CITY — Police were investigating after an unknown suspect is said to have stolen an estimated $95 worth of soap products from The Village CVS store at around 3:30 p.m. Nov. 2.

Armed man reported at park

GROSSE POINTE PARK — Police were called to Patterson Park at around 4:20 p.m. Oct. 28 after a man was said to have been seen in the parking lot with a handgun. When officers got there, they said they found the suspect alone in his vehicle with the gun. According to a report, the man was intoxicated. Police said they arrested the man — a 67-year-old from Grosse Pointe Park — and secured his weapon without incident. The suspect could be facing a charge of possession of a firearm while intoxicated, police said.

Vehicle with medical equipment stolen

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — An unknown suspect is said to have stolen a doctor’s vehicle while it was parked in the north lot of Ascension St. John Hospital between the hours of 6:15 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. Oct. 20. Besides the vehicle, the suspect got away with the victim’s wallet and an estimated $40,000 worth of equipment used for surgeries, according to a police report.

Resident reports phone harassment

GROSSE POINTE SHORES — A 46-year-old Grosse Pointe Shores woman filed a report with police Oct. 19 after she said she got a series of calls and texts from an unknown person starting at 5 p.m. Oct. 18 from a phone number with a 248 area code. The victim told police she let all the calls go to voicemail, but the caller never left her a message. After the calls, she said the person texted her from the same number at 7:45 p.m. Oct. 18. The message referred to the victim by an expletive and warned her to watch her back because the suspect knew “where you live in Grosse Pointe,” according to a police report. The victim said her husband blocked Caller ID and tried to call the suspect himself, but although the caller answered the phone twice, the caller never said anything. The victim told police she didn’t know who or why anyone might be angry with her. The case was turned over to the detective bureau for further investigation.

Fraud reported

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 11:17 a.m. on Oct. 24, a fraud report was made after an incident that occurred on Oct. 23 in the 27000 block of Little Mack Avenue.

Upon arrival, an officer was met by the manager of the business, a 27-year-old woman, who showed the officer video footage. The footage started at 9:25 p.m. on Oct. 24 and showed the suspect, an unknown man. The suspect is shown walking up to the counter and buying an item. He can be seen pulling money out of his pocket and paying for the item. According to the manager, the suspect told the clerk he wanted $500 on a Cash App card. He pulled money out of a different pocket and paid for it. The suspect reportedly bought two $500 gift cards using money from the same pocket. The footage does not show the suspect vehicle. The manager stated they were scammed out of $1,500 but the amount of counterfeit bills given to the officer totaled $1,560. The counterfeit bills were all $20 bills.

Fraud reported

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 2:56 p.m. on Oct. 19, a fraud report was made after an incident that occurred on the same day in the 27000 block of Jefferson Avenue. At the stated time on that date, the victim, a 58-year-old woman, walked into the police department to make a report. She stated she answered a Facebook ad to complete a survey for Walmart and receive money. The woman said a few days later, she received a check in the mail for $1,570.32 and began receiving text messages from a phone number instructing her to cash the check and send gift cards. The woman then went to a bank to cash the check and was notified that it was fraudulent. The woman did not send any gift cards and she did not lose any money.

Women arrested for Kohl’s shoplifting incident

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police reportedly went to Kohl’s, 44200 Schoenherr Road, Oct. 21 upon hearing that shoplifting was occurring. According to store staff, three women were putting items in bags while in the men’s section and then they allegedly took some bags full of merchandise out of the store without paying for it. The women had exited the store’s eastern doors and entered a Chevrolet sedan, and an officer reportedly spotted the vehicle taking off. Police said they tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle allegedly tried to get away, driving through a stop sign in the process. After a brief police pursuit, all three suspects reportedly exited the car. Police said they chased and arrested the trio, at one point reportedly using a stun gun in the process. Police retrieved the merchandise, valued at $1,130.25, from the car and a suspect’s purse and gave it back to Kohl’s.
