MACOMB TOWNSHIP — The Macomb Township Board of Trustees prepared the township for 2024’s elections by selecting the township recreation center as its early voting site at the board’s Nov. 8 meeting. “This is an exciting time for voting in Michigan,” said Kristi Pozzi, Macomb Township clerk. “Early voting has been practiced in other states for a long time now, so we’re excited to launch this new option for our voters.” Early voting was approved by Michigan voters in the 2022 elections. In Macomb Township, two weeks of early voting will begin on the second Saturday prior to the election and run until the Sunday before Election Day. Communities in Oakland County held early voting trials for its 2023 local elections, with communities there opting for sharing early voting sites See TRUSTEES on page 16A

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — When it comes to a successful program, there’s always that one group that builds the culture up and

lays the foundation for future teams to look at as the recipe for success. For the Macomb Lutheran North football program, their 2024 senior class will be a group that will be talked about by the coaching staff to future Mustangs teams for years to come.

“They were a team of firsts,” Lutheran North coach Garrett Wenzelburger said. “We joined the Catholic League in 2010, and we were able to win the first conference championship, and then earned ourselves the first

t is the late fall and nearing winter, and the pressure is on for the students of Macomb Community College. Nearing December means finals are on the horizon, sending students into libraries and forming study groups to prepare for the dreaded tests. It is hard to imagine how any student at this time of year can focus on anything except acing exams, but one MCC student is taking her place in the limelight everywhere from St. Clair Shores to the hardwood at Little Ceasar’s Arena. Allyson Nash is a singer, and a prolific one at that. She is the president of The Macombers — a musical troupe made up of MCC students — and the recent recipient of a St. Clair Shores Community Chorus scholarship. “My interest in music came about when I got to middle school,” Nash said. “I went to Seneca (Middle School) and the two choir directors there changed from doing regular choral music to doing more showtunes and adding choreography and making it a fun show for people to watch. … That started when I was in the sixth grade, and I fell in love with it.” Nash performed with the Seneca choir through all three years of middle school, also taking part in the school’s a cappella and solo ensemble while becoming a member of the Michigan Honors Choir. “Getting into Seneca’s choir really opened up my love for wanting to continue doing anything with choir and music in general,” Nash said. The love of music, sparked in middle school, followed Nash to Dakota High School. There she performed in the show choir and took part in two musicals, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Les Misérables.” She kept competing in solo ensembles, expanding to both classical and musical competitions and winning events at the district and state level. “I was doing a lot in high school, but it was my life,” Nash said. “It was so much fun. I knew I wanted to do something with music once I graduated high school. I didn’t know exactly what yet.” Nash decided to go to MCC in order to stay close to home, citing

VETERANS GATHER FOR ‘I THANK YOU’ LUNCHEON BY MARIA ALLARD

allard@candgnews.com

WARREN — Every military veteran has a story to tell. Whether it’s painful memories of the sounds of war or battle scars that never healed, veterans share a common bond. Approximately 100 of those veterans gathered Nov. 9 at Andiamo Warren for the annual “I Thank You” Veterans Day luncheon, hosted by 94.7 WCSX-FM disc jockeys Big Jim O’Brien and Ryan Logan of the “Big Jim’s House” morning show, which airs from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. The radio station staff accepted nominations from family members and friends of veterans to attend the luncheon. Veterans also could put in their own names for consideration. Veterans Day, held annually Nov. 11, is a federal holiday in the U.S. observed to honor veterans of the armed forces. The service members enjoyed lunch courtesy of the classic rock radio station and the restaurant. There also were several guest speakers, and O’Brien stopped at each table to speak to the veterans personally. As a bonus, WCSX provided veterans tickets to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra on Dec. 23 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. “It’s an honor to be here with all of you. In this room, we’re all brothers and sisters,” said O’Brien, who served eight years in the U.S. Navy. “My dad was a (U.S. Army) Ranger in Korea. I had uncles that served in Germany in the ’50s as well. God bless the men and women who serve and the See VETERANS on page 8A

prep bowl appearance. We didn’t win the prep bowl, but it was our first appearance at Ford Field in Week 9. Yeah, first district championship in school history and first team to win nine games in school history. They’re taking a lot of pride in that.” Lutheran North secured the program’s first-ever district championship in a 32-30 win over Marine City on Nov. 3 before falling to unbeaten Corunna in the regional finals. Watching Lutheran North this season, it’d be difficult to imagine how this team was 3-6 last year and unable to qualify for the playoffs. Earning the Catholic High School League-Intersectional 1 league title this season and posting the most wins in school history with a 9-3 record, Lutheran North’s turnaround was foreshadowed by how the team performed in 2022. Their season record last year didn’t re-

flect a team that held fourth quarter leads in eight of their nine games, but behind their seniors, Lutheran North found ways to win instead of different ways to lose this season. “I feel that all the countless amount of hours we have put in the weightroom, practice, and even individual work, which are things that nobody really sees, helped us make the jump to be great,” senior quar-

terback Eddie Cesar said. “All of the guys bought into our goals and made them happen.” Cesar knows a thing or two about being great on the football field, accounting for 40 touchdowns (20 rushing, 19 passing, 1 receiving) and 2,548 total yards (820 rushing and 1,728 passing) this season. Cesar has been a staple for Lutheran

families as well who stay behind as we go and do some pretty crazy stuff for our country.” Along with O’Brien and Logan, several other WCSX staff members attended to show

their appreciation to the veterans. Among them was Marketing Director Ben Perez, whose two children have served in the military. This was the sixth “I Thank You” luncheon. “We started this at the radio station when Ryan was interning,” O’Brien said. “It continues to grow.”

Matthew Antieau was among the many luncheon guests. The New Boston resident served in the U.S. Navy from 1986 to 1990 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. “It’s outstanding that they’re doing this,” he said. “It shows appreciation.” Antieau, 54, enlisted in the service because he felt like it was his duty. He said the military taught him discipline and it “pointed

me in the right direction.” After the service, Antieau became a firefighter for the Flat Rock Fire Department. Presently, he volunteers his time at the Freedom Center Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus, which provides a respite to traveling military members, veterans and their families. Macomb Lutheran North senior quarterback Eddie Cesar rushes for a touchdown against St. Clair Shores South Lake on Aug. 24. Lutheran North leaned heavily on their fouryear linebacker Ian Ruatto, and he responded with a team-high 90 tackles this season. “Obviously, Ian is your dude,” Wenzelburger said. “He’s your anchor and he’s the middle linebacker making all the calls, but Dom Carroll was phenomenal out there as well.” They’re a team of firsts, and the senior group’s impact went far beyond the stat sheets and historic feats. Morris. “It takes a lot of mental work, especially when I feel as if I’m an athlete playing quarterback,” Cesar said. “However, my coaches put me in a position to grow and learn the entire game.” Cesar led the Lutheran North offense with 366 passing yards and five touchdowns in their 54-49 win over Armada on Oct. 27 in the first round of the playoffs while his No. 1 wideout, junior Hudson MacDonald, tallied four catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns in the win. “He’s (MacDonald) a good athlete,” Wenzelburger said. “Last year as a sophomore, he really learned how to play receiver, and did well just based off pure athleticism. This year, you could tell, and really, I think it was in the summer, he just took at receiver. He had big games when we needed to throw the ball.” MacDonald finished the season with 612 yards receiving and eight touchdowns while also tallying 329 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. MacDonald formed a lethal receiving duo with senior wideout Dominic Carroll, who added 588 receiving yards and six touchdowns this season. Senior running back Enrico Piccinini led the rushing attack alongside Caesar this year with 820 yards and 11 touchdowns. Carroll was one of the more vital pieces on the Lutheran North defense, anchoring the secondary with 73 tackles and a teamhigh 14 tackles for a loss this season at the cornerback position. t isn’t the holidays until Main Street in Rochester shines with a light display that puts Clark Griswold’s house from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” to shame. This year, downtown Rochester was slated to officially transform into a glimmering spectacle when the Big, Bright Light Show switch was flipped Monday, Nov. 20, during the 50th annual Lagniappe event. At 6 p.m. on East Fourth Street, the Big, Bright Light Show program was slated to begin with help from Rochester Mayor Stuart Bikson, Channel 7 and a special appearance by Santa Claus. The 18th annual Big, Bright Light Show will be set aglow with 15 colors of LED lights. The lights are a huge attraction, according to Kristi Trevarrow, the executive director of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority. “Especially coming into our 18th year of Big, Bright, it’s less of an event and more of a tradition. It’s always part of the holiday conversation: ‘When are we going to see the lights?’” Trevarrow said. “Everybody always wants to come see the lights because your holi-

She has now been a member of The Macombers for three years and has been the troupe’s president for two. “We like to say we’re the goodwill ambassadors of Macomb,” Nash said of the troupe. Being the only collegiate show choir in Michigan, The Macombers tour all around the metro region and the state. “We go all around,” Nash said. “We perform for schools. We’re going to the Pistons game (on Nov. 14) and singing the national anthem there, which is pretty amazing. We’re at the Jimmy John’s (Field) games. We’re all around.”

Her duties for The Macombers are in conjunction with her pursuit of a musical certificate program, keeping her schedule busy and her vocal cords at their limit. It’s a difficult schedule for anyone to manage, but Nash plans on not just powering through. She has her eyes on post-MCC plans. “I’m going to be transferring to Western Michigan University in the fall,” Nash said. “I’ll be going into the Gilmore School of Music there and completing my music education bachelor’s degree at Western. It’s probably going to be a two-year program for me because all of my credits transfer to Western.” But before Allyson Nash can take the stage in Kalamazoo, she’s got a packed schedule to get through this December. She’ll be performing with chamber choirs in cemeteries to aid mourners, caroling at the Detroit Zoo with The Macombers on Saturday, Dec. 2, touring schools and senior centers for shows throughout the month and will star as the featured soloist at the St. Clair Shores Community Chorus’ Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 3.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS MACOMB COUNTY — The Macomb County EMS Medical Control Authority conducted a full-scale simulation of a mass casualty event at Kensington Church in Clinton Township on the morning of Nov. 8. Over 200 participants from EMS and fire agencies, law enforcement, dispatch, emergency management and the Region 2 North Healthcare Coalition hospitals took part in the simulation to test and develop response strategies to mass casualty events. “The safety and well-being of our community are top priorities,” said Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel in a press release. “Collaborative exercises like these play a crucial role in ensuring our emergency response teams are well prepared and equipped to handle any unforeseen challenges they may face.” According to Macomb County officials, responding to events like mass shootings require a certain degree of planning and coordination between public safety and emergency management agencies. Events happen

quickly — the November 2021 Oxford High School shooting took place over four minutes — requiring response efforts to be quick as well. — Dean Vaglia

days wouldn’t be complete without that trip, and we appreciate that people have made us a part of their holidays. That is amazing to us. We have always said we are in the memory-making business, and I think that the Big, Bright Light Show is at the pinnacle of that.”

while Macomb County communities have opted to host municipality-specific early voting sites next year. “We had the opportunity to send some of our employees to Oakland County for this last election … and they said it was well received by all the voters,” Pozzi said. “They were actually thankful that they were able to tabulate their ballot ahead of time before Election Day.” The recreation center was chosen as Macomb Township’s early voting site as Pozzi expects about one-third of the township’s nearly 73,600 voters will opt for early in-person voting. Ballots cast via early in-person voting are not counted until 8 p.m. on election night. While the township is only planning to have one early voting site for all precincts in 2024, state law allows for multiple early voting sites if a municipality so chooses.

M-59 corridor study participation

Macomb Township is taking part in a study to determine the future of the M-59 corridor. Working with other M-59 communities, the township is serving as the pass-through agency to work with consultants and handle the funds for the undertaking of this project. “The results of this phase of the report will be a highlevel (look at) what could Hall Road be in the future, or what it should be,” Macomb Township Supervisor Frank

The Macomb Township Board of Trustees decided on Nov. 8 that the township recreation center will be its early in-person voting location for 2024. Viviano said. “And then the communities involved have to get together and decide if we want to continue to pursue anything that looks like the next steps of the plan. Do we want to have some kind of corridor authority where we’re working in conjunction with each other? “We don’t know what the next steps will be, but it’s worth the effort to at least look at Hall Road. It’s our main artery in Macomb County more so than any other, and if it becomes stagnant and businesses remain unfilled … how do we help those landowners fill that space for the betterment of our collective communities?” Viviano said.

The total funds allocated to the project are $45,000 split between $36,832.50 in federal funds and $8,167.50 in local funds, with the latter also being split, with $5,000 coming from Macomb County and $452.50 coming from each of the six participating municipalities and Connect Macomb (formerly the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce). Consulting firms WSP and OHM Advisors will undertake the study. OHM is already working with Macomb Township on a visualization project for Broughton Road. there was a special message played on a video screen from Bret Michaels, frontman of the band Poison. “Thank you for everything you do for us. Happy Veterans Day,” the famed singer said. “I come from a military family. You rock our world.” Attendees also got to see Michigan’s Traveling Memorial of Fallen Heroes, which is a patriotic wall made by local resident Bill Lynn. The display tells stories of the veterans who paid the ultimate price for our nation’s freedoms. It honors those killed in combat and from accidental deaths and suicides. “The public needs to be reminded and our children need to be taught about the price our vets pay,” Lynn said. The luncheon gave Karen Straffon the opportunity to invite everyone to Wreaths Across America to be held at noon Dec. 16 at Resurrection Ceremony, 18201 Clinton River Road in Clinton Township. Volunteers will place wreaths at gravesites of veterans. A wreath costs $17. Those interested in participating or sponsoring a wreath can contact Straffon at kcstraffon@ comcast.net or (810) 278-0415. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel stopped by to wish all a happy Veterans Day. During his visit, he encouraged the lunch guests to seek out veterans services offered in Macomb County at the website vets.macombgov.org. Amy Persyn, Marketing Director/1st Vice President of First State Bank, shared her thoughts with the veterans. Her grandfather, William Hope, was a medic in the Korean War. He died this past August at the age of 95. First State Bank has helped a handful of veterans acquire homes. Vets Returning Home Founder and Director Sandy Bower also addressed the crowd, reminding them of the nonprofit organization’s thrift store, located at 29523 Gratiot Ave., in Roseville. The store helps support the veterans who utilize services at the Vets Returning Home shelter located at 17955 E. 11 Mile Road in Roseville. For more information about

School children remember veterans

In honor of Veterans Day, students at Pinewood Elementary in the Warren Woods Public Schools district made it a priority to honor veterans this month. Some classes wrote letters and made cards for students’ parents and family members who served in the military. Throughout the month, they also displayed a bulletin board in the hallway that included the names of veterans in their families and friendship circles. Faculty members who are veterans were also recognized. The school’s speech language pathologist, Lorrie Garrity, had a large star on the wall. Garrity is married to a veteran, and the couple celebrated their 29-year wedding anniversary on Veterans Day. Call Staff Writer Maria Allard at (586) 498-1045. Photo by Patricia O’Blenes

F THE O E M I R C • F THE WEEK Soap theft suspect makes clean getaway

GROSSE POINTE CITY — Police were investigating after an unknown suspect is said to have stolen an estimated $95 worth of soap products from The Village CVS store at around 3:30 p.m. Nov. 2.

Armed man reported at park

GROSSE POINTE PARK — Police were called to Patterson Park at around 4:20 p.m. Oct. 28 after a man was said to have been seen in the parking lot with a handgun. When officers got there, they said they found the suspect alone in his vehicle with the gun. According to a report, the man was intoxicated. Police said they arrested the man — a 67-year-old from Grosse Pointe Park — and secured his weapon without incident. The suspect could be facing a charge of possession of a firearm while intoxicated, police said.

Vehicle with medical equipment stolen

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — An unknown suspect is said to have stolen a doctor’s vehicle while it was parked in the north lot of Ascension St. John Hospital between the hours of 6:15 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. Oct. 20. Besides the vehicle, the suspect got away with the victim’s wallet and an estimated $40,000 worth of equipment used for surgeries, according to a police report.

Resident reports phone harassment

GROSSE POINTE SHORES — A 46-year-old Grosse Pointe Shores woman filed a report with police Oct. 19 after she said she got a series of calls and texts from an unknown person starting at 5 p.m. Oct. 18 from a phone number with a 248 area code. The victim told police she let all the calls go to voicemail, but the caller never left her a message. After the calls, she said the person texted her from the same number at 7:45 p.m. Oct. 18. The message referred to the victim by an expletive and warned her to watch her back because the suspect knew “where you live in Grosse Pointe,” according to a police report. The victim said her husband blocked Caller ID and tried to call the suspect himself, but although the caller answered the phone twice, the caller never said anything. The victim told police she didn’t know who or why anyone might be angry with her. The case was turned over to the detective bureau for further investigation.

Upon arrival, an officer was met by the manager of the business, a 27-year-old woman, who showed the officer video footage. The footage started at 9:25 p.m. on Oct. 24 and showed the suspect, an unknown man. The suspect is shown walking up to the counter and buying an item. He can be seen pulling money out of his pocket and paying for the item. According to the manager, the suspect told the clerk he wanted $500 on a Cash App card. He pulled money out of a different pocket and paid for it. The suspect reportedly bought two $500 gift cards using money from the same pocket. The footage does not show the suspect vehicle. The manager stated they were scammed out of $1,500 but the amount of counterfeit bills given to the officer totaled $1,560. The counterfeit bills were all $20 bills.

Fraud reported

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 2:56 p.m. on Oct. 19, a fraud report was made after an incident that occurred on the same day in the 27000 block of Jefferson Avenue. At the stated time on that date, the victim, a 58-year-old woman, walked into the police department to make a report. She stated she answered a Facebook ad to complete a survey for Walmart and receive money. The woman said a few days later, she received a check in the mail for $1,570.32 and began receiving text messages from a phone number instructing her to cash the check and send gift cards. The woman then went to a bank to cash the check and was notified that it was fraudulent. The woman did not send any gift cards and she did not lose any money.

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police reportedly went to Kohl’s, 44200 Schoenherr Road, Oct. 21 upon hearing that shoplifting was occurring. According to store staff, three women were putting items in bags while in the men’s section and then they allegedly took some bags full of merchandise out of the store without paying for it. The women had exited the store’s eastern doors and entered a Chevrolet sedan, and an officer reportedly spotted the vehicle taking off. Police said they tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle allegedly tried to get away, driving through a stop sign in the process. After a brief police pursuit, all three suspects reportedly exited the car. Police said they chased and arrested the trio, at one point reportedly using a stun gun in the process. Police retrieved the merchandise, valued at $1,130.25, from the car and a suspect’s purse and gave it back to Kohl’s.
