BY MARIA ALLARD

allard@candgnews.com

STERLING HEIGHTS — When Warren Consolidated Schools Career Prep Center metal technology paraprofessional Joey Shumar played taps on the trumpet, it was a solemn reminder of the sacrifices of our U.S. military veterans. “My father and half of my relatives have served,” Shumar said. “I am thankful for what the veterans have done for us.” Shumar was among the staff and students who gathered with local veterans around the school’s outdoor flagpole Nov. 2 for the Career Prep Center’s 18th annual Veterans Day celebration. Veterans Day, held annually Nov. 11, is a federal holiday in the U.S. observed to honor veterans of the armed forces. The event began with a flag raising cer-

WARREN — Several hundred supporters and well-wishers gathered in the Larsa Palace Banquet Center on Old 13 Mile Road Nov. 2 for Warren Mayor James Fouts’ retirement party after more than 43 years as an elected official. Fouts served 16 years as mayor and 27 years on the Warren City Council. “I never thought I would be mayor,” Fouts said. “I never thought I would be a councilman.” Fouts started his professional career as an educator teaching government, history and driver’s education in the Warren Consolidated School District, and his entry into politics was initially uneventful. “I ran for state rep three times and lost three times,” Fouts said. “My mother said, ‘Find another office.’” LIBRAR on page 12A In 1981, Fouts found another office and ran for Warren City Council.

School board president will move out of district, resigns his position

WARREN — The Warren Woods Public Schools Board of Education is losing a longtime member. On Oct. 10, Board President Jere Green announced he is stepping down. Last month, he submitted a letter of resignation to Superintendent Stacey Denewith-Fici and his fellow board members. Green has been on the school board approximately 29 years. “That’s a long time,” Green said. “That’s a lot of community involvement, and that’s hard to step away from.” Green said he is stepping down from public office because he is moving out of the district. After much thought and consideration, he and his wife Judy — a retired Hazel Park Schools teacher — want to spend more time with their children and grandchildren. The couple, both 68, are relocating to Plymouth to Green be closer to their daughter Katie, her husband and three children. The Greens also will have more time to visit their daughter, Melissa, who lives in Kentucky with her husband and two children. Both Katie and Melissa are Warren Woods Tower High School graduates. “I want to see my grandkids more than I see them right now,” Green said. “I want to be a bigger part of them growing up.” After announcing his resignation, Green looked back on his nearly three-decade tenure on the board. “The entire board has always understood what their role is. We also worked as a team,” Green said. “None of us came into this with a personal agenda. The board has maintained a very healthy relationship. We always got the support from the community to pass our bond issues. We were strong advocates for our unions right down the line, teachers, bus drivers, cooks and custodians.” Green also recognized the work the staff is doing in the district. See GREEN on page 7A

WARREN — On Oct. 25, Warren Fire Department cadets and new hires gathered in the atrium of Warren City Hall for the swearing in and promotions ceremony. A bagpiper led the cadets and new hires as they filed in to be recognized by the department, city officials, family and friends. “Today we are here to recognize the achievements of our new fully certified firefighter paramedics and our equally important new hires into the department,” said Warren Fire Commissioner Wilburt “Skip” McAdams. “Approximately two years ago the fire department was in crisis.”

See FIRE on page 16A

The crisis was 21 vacant budgeted positions along with nearly a dozen department employees expressing their intent to retire that year or the next year, explained McAdams. “We have now a fully staffed or close to it fire department because of Skip McAdams and the cadet program,” said Warren Mayor James Fouts. “We were paying $3.5 million in overtime and now as a result of having new hires and the cadet program, we have reduced that $3.5 million to a reasonable (amount) under $1 million.” Probationary firefighter/paramedic Jake Combs recently completed the cadet program and is excited to be on the job with the department. “I grew up in Warren on 11 (Mile Road) and

WARREN — Two brothers were charged in the 37th District Court before Judge Michael Chupa on Oct. 31 for their alleged role in assaulting Warren police officers and disturbing the peace. Daniel Javon Lenox, 23, of Warren, was arraigned on two counts of assaulting, resisting or obstructing officers causing injury, which is a four-year felony. In addition, he was charged with one count of assaulting, resisting or obstructing officers, a two-year felony; malicious destruction of fire department or police property, a four-year felony; reckless use of a firearm, a 90-day misdemeanor; and disturbing the peace, also a 90day misdemeanor. Lenox’s brother, Jaron James Smith, 22, of Warren, allegedly interfered with Lenox’s arrest and also allegedly assaulted officers, according to police. He was charged with one count of assaulting, resisting or obstructing officers, and disturbing the peace. On Oct. 30, patrol officers were called to the 7500 block of Fisher Avenue in Warren around 3:40 a.m. for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, police reportedly saw two suspects run into the residence. The suspects would not talk to the officers or exit the premises, as requested, according to police. It appeared the suspects fired shots in the air, but no one was injured, police said. Officers located several spent shell casings in the vicinity of the shooting scene, according to police in a written release. After interviewing witnesses and a nearly three-hour surveillance of the residence, police identified the possible suspect and alleged shooter as a 23-year-old male who was seen exiting the residence, according to police. When officers approached the suspect, the suspect punched one officer in the head, threw a wooden table at officers and threw another officer off the front porch, police said. “Officers went to place both suspects under arrest and were then immediately assaulted,” said Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer in a press release. “Thank-

Suspect charged with multiple break-ins in tri-county area BY GENA JOHNSON gjohnson@candgnews.com

WARREN — The alleged ringleader and breaking and entering suspect in several tri-county crimes was arraigned in the 37th District Court in Warren and charged with multiple felonies on Oct. 20. Martez Hunter, 18, of Detroit, who according to Warren police was the main suspect in an alleged criminal ring, was charged with two counts of breaking and entering a building with intent, a 10-year felony; one count of receiving and concealing a stolen firearm, also a 10-year felony; and one count of receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle, a five-year felony. In a written statement, police said Hunter has previous contacts with law enforcement for similar crimes. Warren police reportedly responded to a break-in at two tobacco and vape shops on Eight Mile Road and Nine Mile Road earlier in October. A white Dodge Ram was report-

edly seen on closed-circuit video arriving at the businesses during early morning hours. Investigators reported that five suspects were seen exiting the Dodge, forcing entry into the businesses and stealing merchandise from each store. The susHunter pects reportedly left the scene in the Dodge. Warren Police Department detectives and Special Operations Unit officers, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies in the tri-county area, learned businesses in Roseville, St. Clair Shores, Dearborn, Hazel Park, Hamtramck, Redford Township and Grosse Pointe City had been broken into by suspects matching the description of those in the two Warren incidents, with the same vehicle description, according to police. Investigators also learned the suspects

“Stacey is an incredible superintendent. We never micromanaged the superintendent,” he said. “(Deputy Superintendent) Neil Cassabon is a phenomenal business manager. We’ve been financially stable and sound.” When reflecting on his years on the board, Green said “the most challenging” time was during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We did remote for quite a while,” Green said. “It was a tough situation for educators.” He also noted the importance of updating school security measures and technology, especially within the last five to 10 years. The 1973 Mott High School graduate has deep roots in Warren. Both of his parents were educators, and his brother Patrick Green is the current Warren City Council president and mayor pro tem. Jere Green was a police officer in the Warren Police Department, moving up the ranks to become police commissioner. He left the police department in 2017. Board Secretary Kay Walsh was “completely shocked” when her colleague announced his resignation.

“He’s got history here. I know it wasn’t an easy choice for him and his wife,” Walsh said. “I’m a little saddened. I will miss him terribly. I wish him the best of luck.” The two have served on the school board the same number of years. “We kind of grew up together on the board, learning all the ins and outs of it,” Walsh said. “He will be sorely missed by the community. He’s a great person and a wonderful school board president. It will be tough and it will be sad, but we will carry on.” His absence will take some getting used to. “I will greatly miss his dedication to the district and his unwavering commitment to public education,” Denewith-Fici said via email. “I will miss the ease and expertise with which he ran the board meetings. I will also miss his sense of humor and the stories about his children and grandchildren.” Denewith-Fici called Green “a dedicated leader.” She first met the school board member in 1996 when she was hired as an English teacher at Warren Woods Tower High School. She even had both of his daughters in class. “I got to know him best when I was appointed superintendent in April 2008,” Denewith-Fici said. “Mr. Green has been

In the past, the school board members served four-year terms, and now they serve six-year terms. School officials will appoint someone to fill the vacancy, and that person will serve until Dec. 31, 2024. Green said he will not be involved in the appointment of the new board member. A candidate elected to the school board during the general election in November 2024 will complete the remainder of Green’s term of office. District officials accepted applications for candidates until Nov. 3, after the Warren Weekly went to press. Interviews will be conducted at a public meeting during the month of November. The board may choose to interview some or all applicants. The chosen appointee will take office on Jan. 9, 2024.

an asset to the district and community for over 30 years as a parent and School Board Member. He makes decisions based on what is best for students and staff while remaining fiscally responsible.” Denewith-Fici said she feels one of Green’s strengths is his background in leadership. “While he was involved in law enforcement, those skills translated to his position on the board,” she said. “He knows his role as a board member is to set the policies and budget and to do what is best for students; while he is knowledgeable of all it takes to run a district and school, he holds the administration accountable to implement those policies within the budget.” Green had been reelected to the school board in November 2022 for a six-year term.

and the Dodge Ram were allegedly involved in a nonfatal shooting in Detroit in October of this year, police said. According to police, Warren investigators located the Dodge, which was allegedly stolen recently in Shelby Township. On Oct.19, a multijurisdictional team of officers, led by members of the Warren Police Department, began surveillance on the suspected vehicle. Michigan State Police attempted to stop the Dodge in Detroit, but the driver allegedly fled from officers. Michigan State Police then disabled the Dodge and the two suspects fled on foot, police said. Warren officers arrested both suspects without incident. found handguns, stolen merchandise and other items linking the suspects to the breakins, according to police. “The arrest, charges, and bond in this case are yet another example of the collaboration of local law enforcement,” said Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer. At press time, Hunter was the only suspect arraigned. He entered a not guilty plea before Chief Judge John Chmura, who set bond at $100,000 cash or surety only. Efforts were made to contact Hunter’s attorney of record, Stephen D. Becker. He was not available for comment at press time. Hunter is in the Macomb County jail, according to court records, as he awaits his Nov. 2 probable cause conference at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Chmura. If convicted, Hunter could receive up to 35 years in prison. Call Staff Writer Gena Johnson at (586) 498-1069. However, Smith was charged as a fourth time habitual offender due to his previous felony convictions for possession of weapons and stolen property, police said in a statement. According to court records, neither Lenox nor Smith had been assigned a courtappointed attorney at press time. Both suspects are currently in the Macomb County Jail where they await their probable cause conference on Nov. 14 at 8:45 a.m. Call Staff Writer Gena Johnson at (586) 498-1069.

Virtual bell ringers can sign up and begin raising funds at any time. The traditional bell ringing begins Nov. 10 and runs through Christmas Eve, excluding Thanksgiving and Sundays. The Salvation Army provides after-school programs, food, shelter, emergency disaster services, substance abuse treatment and free legal aid for families and individuals throughout metro Detroit. Donations from the red kettle campaign help fund those programs. To support the nonprofit organization through a monetary donation, visit SAmetrodetroit.org.

Fouts

from page 1A

Arv Pikunas, who had Fouts for driver’s education in 1981, volunteered to work on his campaign. “I helped (Fouts) on his first campaign. We’d knock on doors. He’d be on one side of the street. I would be on the other,” said Pikunas. “We did that for many, many, many hours and weeks. We went to the primary, then the (general) elections and many elections after that.” Pikunas admired his driver’s ed instructor and more than 40 years later still maintains a relationship with the mayor. Fouts credits Pikunas for helping him to bring City Council meeting broadcasts to Warren. “I may not agree with everything he has ever done. I always thought he was a good person in his heart, who was in it to win it and dedicated to his job 24/7,” said Pikunas, vice president of manufacturing at Schaller Corp. in Chesterfield Township, where he has worked for 35 years. “I really wanted to support someone like that.” For Fouts, a self-described public servant, retirement has not come easy. “My job is my life,” Fouts said. “My passion is serving and protecting Warren citizens.”

Fouts is not a candidate in the election because a court order in the spring of 2023 removed him from the primary ballot due to term limits. It started in 2016, when Warren residents voted to extend the mayor’s term limits to five four-year terms or 20 years. In 2020, residents voted to limit the mayor’s term limits to reflect other elected officials’ term limits of three terms or 12 years. At issue, according to the mayor, was that the 2020 proposal and charter change had no mention of retroactivity, meaning whether previous terms served would be counted in the new term limits. It was that which made the mayor and his team believe he was eligible to run in 2023. “A lot of people have come up to me and said, ‘Congratulations on your retirement,’” Fouts said. “That’s not my idea. My idea is working at my desk and one day that’s it. They carry me off.” “My dad said, people should retire in their 20s and 30s and travel. Then work until they die,” Fouts said. This attitude contributed to the Fouts’ work ethic. Many of the elected public officials and administration appointees, who spoke at the event, mentioned how he calls them early in the morning or late at night, wherever they may be. “I never worked for a more dedicated

mayor and that’s 24/7. You called me at 6:30 in the morning. You called me 10 minutes to 12 (midnight) on New Year’s Eve. You called me while I was in Florida on vacation,” said Warren Fire Commissioner Wilburt “Skip” McAdams. “It was always about doing something that needs to be taken care of in the city of Warren.” “We have the best EMS. We have the best fire department. And we have accomplished that goal,” McAdams said. Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer has been in law enforcement for more than six decades and has worked with a host of mayors, including Jerome P. Cavanagh and Coleman A. Young. “When I look at mayors, Mayor James Fouts is the best. He supports the men and women in blue,” Dwyer said. “This is very important for you to know. There are a lot of mayors out there that tell their chiefs to tell their men and women in blue just go ahead and park somewhere, I don’t want to see you doing the work,” Dwyer said. “The mayor (Fouts) wants his men and women out there working. And they are working. There are too many (police) men and women in this country who are not allowed to do their jobs. They are not allowed to go and arrest criminals.” The mayor listed several things he would like to see happen in Warren city

government during the next administration. The list includes approving the Warren Town Center project and updating the language of the city charter. He’d like to see future mayors-elect take office in January for a smooth transition of city appointees. Also, he would like to see environmental programs that address global warming and clean air in every city building. The mayor reiterated he did not accomplish the administration’s goals by himself and thanked many people including his staff and his executive assistant, Amanda Mika, who he referred to as “my right-hand woman.” Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller spoke about her history with Fouts that began long before her current position. “I was honored to come and speak to your class several times when you were a government teacher,” Miller said. “There is a big election on Tuesday and big shoes to fill,” Miller said. Many in attendance were waiting to hear what is next for Fouts. “I don’t know what I’m going to do,” the mayor said. “I promise you this: You haven’t heard the last of Jim Fouts. The best is yet to come.” Call Staff Writer Gena Johnson at (586) 498-1069.

She wishes to share this message: “Throughout my journey as a letter carrier, clerk, and custodian, I’ve cherished the privilege of being a part of your lives. I’ve celebrated countless smiles, birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings, savoring each precious moment. But now, the time has come to say goodbye. As I embark on this new chapter, I eagerly anticipate running into you in our everyday places, once again sharing those heartfelt smiles that have made my career so special. It’s been a remarkable ride, and I’m thrilled to discover where my next adventure will lead me. In the words of Frank Sinatra, “the best is yet to come”, and as Nancy Sinatra sang, “these boots are made for walking”. It’s been an incredible 35-year journey. I want to thank my supervisors and coworkers for making the workload not just a job but a fun and interesting experience. I’m grateful for all the wonderful people who have been a part of this incredible journey. Working with you has been an absolute pleasure. As I step into retirement, I’m reminded that life is made up of moments, and I’ve cherished each one spent in your company. Thank you for being a part of my life, and I look forward to crossing paths with you in the future. The best is yet to come for all of us”. 0107-2345

Career Prep Center computer programming teacher David LeDuc was rescued from a Vietnamese orphanage in 1975 by the U.S. military. During his speech, LeDuc said that in early 1975, the U.S. and several other Western countries started a rescue mission called Operation Babylift. “This controversial operation involved removing babies, infants, toddlers and young children from their home country of Vietnam and placing them with families in North America, Europe, and Australia,” he said. “Throughout April 1975, 3,000 children were rescued through Operation Babylift. Unfortunately, on the third day of Operation Babylift, one of the planes full of children and adults rescuing them crashed with very few survivors. Despite the tragedy, the operation continued throughout April. The last planes full of children left Saigon on April 27. I was on one of those planes.” The young child arrived in America in the early morning hours of April 28, 1975, See VETERANS on page 21A

emony. Cadet Master Sgt. Genevieve Jones, a junior, and her sister, Cadet Senior Airman Camryn Jones, a sophomore, presented an American flag to members of the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post No. 169 Honor Guard, who then raised Old Glory. The Joneses — whose grandfather was present — are in the school’s Civil Air Patrol detachment, which is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. Patriotic music then filled the air when “The Star-Spangled Banner” played from junior Firas Khaldi on trumpet and senior Sama Khalid on snare drum. After a moment of silence, Career Prep Center computer programming teacher David LeDuc took to the podium to pay homage to the several U.S. veterans who saved him as a toddler while in a Vietnamese orphanage. LeDuc was born “sometime in 1973,” during the Vietnam War, and placed in the orphanage as an infant. David LeDuc is his adoptive name, but his birth name is Le Den Tuan. “My biological mom was probably a young woman who could not keep me safe during wartime,” LeDuc said. “Most surrounding villages around Saigon were decimated or destroyed.” While conducting genetics testing through 23andMe, LeDuc discovered he is 50% Chinese on his biological father’s side and 50% southeast Asian on his biological mother’s side. “That probably made my biological dad a Chinese soldier helping North Vietnam,” he reflected. “Regardless of my genetic makeup, all the children in the orphanages in Saigon were at high risk.”

WARREN — Late on the morning of Oct. 24, Westview Lower Elementary student Journee Garcia tried on a new winter coat while inside the gymnasium of the Neigebaur Administration Building Community Engagement Center. She gave it the once-over while looking in the full-length mirror and decided it was the right style and fit. Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan volunteer Tina Duspiva agreed. Then it was time to check out the socks, pick out a new book and add a hygiene kit to her shopping spree with Duspiva’s help. Garcia was among approximately 700 Fitzgerald Public Schools students who last month participated in the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan’s Operation School Bell program. For one day, volunteers transformed the Neigebaur gym into a temporary department store from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students from both schools were bused over to Neigebaur where they were paired up with a volunteer to shop for a new winter coat, two shirts, underwear, socks, a winter hat, gloves, toiletries and a book. The students carried their new purchases in a duffel bag, which was included in the shopping trip. Dar Laskowski, vice president of philanthropic programs for the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan, said all the cloth-

Ryan. I always wanted to be a firefighter. I don’t live in the city anymore, but coming back to the city I used to live in means a lot to be a firefighter where I grew up,” said Combs. Being full time with the department since June, Combs counts the brotherhood of the department among his most memorable experiences so far. “Just making new friends more like brothers, working with everybody,” said Combs. “You are with them a third of your life. Making those memories is like a big family at the department.” Firefighters must always stay ready for the call. This was exemplified by some of the cadets and new hires donning a radio across their chest or on their back during the ceremony. According to new-hire probationary firefighter/paramedic Jake Haller, who was among those on duty, that would enable dispatch to contact them if necessary. The probationary period for the cadet probationary firefighter/paramedics is two years. For the new-hire probationary firefighter/paramedics, it’s one year, McAdams said. According to the commissioner, the cadets earn while they learn. Books and training are paid for by the Warren Fire Department. Once cadets pass all the necessary exams and are properly licensed, then they can become a firefighter/EMT-basic with a

SPOTLIGHT ON WOMEN IN BUSINESS

18A/ NOVEMBER 8, 2023

WARREN WEEKLY

Number of women in business schools continues to climb BY CHARITY MEIER cmeier@candgnews.com

METRO DETROIT — Women are having an increased presence in the business world, according to recent statistics. Troy’s Walsh College calculates that women are more prevalent than men this semester, with over 53% of the student body being women. “We are seeing an increase of women in technology, and we want to encourage that,” said Suzy Siegle, the president of Walsh College. According to Siegle, the majority of female students are going into the fields of accounting, marketing and management. Oakland University said they are seeing an increase in women enrolling in the areas of accounting, human resource management and operations management. “I would say in the areas of marketing, definitely in management, in the MBA (Master of Business Administration) we are seeing a lot of women business folks who are interested in that,” Siegle said, “We have a great doctoral program in business administration program, and I’ve been impressed when we’ve had the doctoral residencies on our campus. … I’ve been impressed with the strong women leaders who have been enrolling in that program to take their careers to their next level. And a lot of them see opportunities in business coaching and consulting, really taking their careers advancing through that.” “When I was in business school back in the 1990s pursuing an MBA, fewer than 10% of my class were women,” said Toni M. Somers, the associate dean and a professor of management and information systems at the Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business. “Today, in our business school, at least 50% are women. This parallels nationally the rise of women

in executive positions and on boards of directors of both Michigan and U.S. corporations. While traditionally there have been fewer women than men in analytics, finance and technology studies, presence is growing in these fields as well.” Jacqueline M. Stavros, a professor of the College of Business and IT at Lawrence Technological University, said the school can prepare women to pursue a wide range of career paths, such as accounting, finance, marketing, analytics, project management, general manager-types of positions, human resource positions, operations management, supply chain management, information technology, and even start a business. “I think we need to do more to recruit women into our programs,” said Stavros. Siegle said Walsh College does have a variety of ways in which it encourages women to go into the business industry. She said they have scholarship opportunities for women going into an emerging field, as well as opportunities through the school’s career services, such as “Lunch and Learn,” where female executives come and present to the

students. “There’s been a lot of great examples in our career fairs where we’ve seen amazing female leaders present,” Siegle said. “So they’re seeing great women in leadership.” The school also offers flexible programs. Siegle said this enables women, as well as men, to balance school, work, family and other obligations. She said that studies have shown that, especially for women in the workforce who do balance many different obligations, that flexible scheduling is very important to them. She said that the school offers instruction in a variety of ways, including in person, online and a hybrid format. “That flexibility has been very important for our students so that they don’t have to compromise the quality they deserve for the flexibility they need,” said Siegle. Tiffany LeDonne-Smith, a graduate of Oakland University and an advisor for the OU business program, founded a mentoring program for women in business. She said she noticed when she started working at the university in 2017 that there were many female students in the business program, but no support services for them specifically. After getting some feedback, LeDonne-Smith was able to determine that the students “overwhelmingly” wanted and needed both a

student organization for women in business and a mentoring program. In fall 2018, some students founded the student organization Women in Business, which is now one of the largest and most active student organizations in business on the campus today, according to LeDonneSmith. It offers programming on topics such as women in leadership, women in various business fields, sexual harassment in the work place, etc., and brings in guest speakers and alumni. In January 2019 LeDonne-Smith

launched the Women’s Leadership and Mentor Program, which pairs female undergraduate students with an alumna businesswoman to mentor them for a year. “That program has really been phenomenal, because each student who is in the program is connected with someone who obviously works in the profession. … That’s been really great for our students,” said LeDonne-Smith. “The program has just been great for students to have a professional conSee WOMEN on page 22A

warming to see the kids.” Current Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan President Denise Kaminske has been involved with the organization for nearly 30 years and always enjoys the Operation School Bell program. “We want to see smiles on their faces when they have new clothes,” Kaminske said. “It gives them self-confidence, which helps their learning.” She also thanked the volunteers from the community that lend their time. Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan volunteers are from all over the metro Detroit area, primarily Rochester Hills, Troy and Shelby Township. Many of them provided assistance during Operation School Bell, as did volunteers from First

Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan volunteer and retired Oakland University professor Laurie Alkidas also recruited some of her former students. Fitzgerald Public Schools Superintendent Hollie Stange even stopped by Operation School Bell last month. “I am so pleased. They are serving our entire student body at Mound Park and Westview. It’s so well organized, and the staff is making each shopper feel so individualized. I heard a few girls say, ‘I’ve never been shopping,’” Stange said. “When you have clean clothes that fit, you feel good. You’re more present in class.” Initially, Westview second grader Cameo Walsh was nervous to peruse the clothing racks. But once she relaxed, the experience was “very fun” with volunteer Sallie Wilds

by her side. “She was a good shopper,” Wilds said. “She knew what she wanted, and she coordinated things. I’m glad I got to meet you.” “Me, too,” Walsh said. Students in grades 4-5 attend Mound Park; students in grades 1-3 attend Westview. Along with Operation School Bell, the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan operates several other programs, including “Assault Survivor Kits” for children and adults; the “Wee Help” layette kits and safe sleep packages for newborns; and tutoring for elementary students. The nonprofit organization is funded in many ways, including from tributes and memorials, the ReSale Connection, special fundraising events, individuals and corporate grants. The ReSale Connection, located at 204 S. Main St. in downtown Rochester, sells high-quality merchandise and serves as

the chapter’s main resource. According to the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan’s website, the store is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and is closed Sundays and Mondays. The nonprofit organization will hold its 20th annual Mistletoe Marketplace fundraiser from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Palazzo Grande, 54660 Van Dyke Ave. in Shelby Township. just two days before South Vietnam fell to communism. “From the reports I have read, those children left in my orphanage and other orphanages were relocated to nearby villages, hoping to be spared. Unfortunately, most were not,” he said. Although he wasn’t in good physical shape at the time and had issues with his lungs, LeDuc credits his adoptive parents and Western medicine for restoring his health. So what does Veterans Day mean to LeDuc? “Everything. I would not be here without the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to rescue as many children as they could from orphanages. They are the ones that got me here and allowed me to start living the American Dream. Without them, I know my chances of survival in Vietnam were very low,” he said. “Veterans Day is a day to thank the military men and women who served America. Veterans Day is a time to reflect on the many blessings and opportunities that America has afforded us,” LeDuc said. “Students, I ask you never to pass up the chance to say ‘thank you’

to those who serve. Do this whenever you can, not just on Veterans Day.” LeDuc and his wife have seven children. LeDuc has been at the Career Prep Center for two years. Prior to that, he taught middle school social studies, and social studies in the Waterford School District. “One of my goals was to show my students what a remarkable country America is,” he said. “I accomplished this by teaching American history and telling students how I was rescued from Vietnam, became a citizen, and have lived the American Dream many times.” Career Prep Center Principal Carlie McClenathan also shared her thoughts with the crowd. “Thank you to all of our special guests here today,” she said. “We’re appreciative of your service to our country and honored that you could join us today.” After the ceremony, everyone went inside for a buffet prepared by the culinary arts students. The meal included a French toast bake, scrambled eggs, corned beef hash, fruit, beverages and omelets. The Career Prep Center offers various courses, including culinary arts, engineering and graphic arts. The classes are in two-hour blocks, and students return to their home school for their other classes.

nection, because they might not have someone in their personal life who works in that industry and I also think it’s just beneficial to have … women helping women through navigating that college to career transition.” Siegle said Walsh College has a proud history of educating women and in shaping the college in the institution it is today. She boasted that the school’s faculty and administrative staff is at least 50% women. “I look at business as a way to have contribution and impact in the world, and I think that as business has grown and become more global and more technologically savvy it’s more accessible and inclusive,” said Siegle. “I’ve always seen women be very successful in business … but there’s such an incredible power that we have to make an impact in the world and to change and to be in contribution for that, and I think there’s a heart and soul for that. So, I think it’s a beautiful thing when you see a woman saying, ‘Well, I stepped in to fill a need in business.’ … So I think there’s problems that we see in the world that we want to help solve that maybe our unique and inclusive perspective can bring.” She said women can add a “rich” dimension to leadership roles. Women can make contributions, lead teams and making an impact in a way that brings great empathy, generosity and understanding, Siegle said. According to Siegle, companies that have more diversity in their staffing compete better in the global business place. Siegle said they are striving to get more women to take positions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, and Walsh is seeing an uptick in the num-

ber of women in STEM as they are g rowing their programs in cybersecurity and machine learning. Siegle said they are also looking to increase the number of women in entrepreneurship. Women contribute substantially to entrepreneurship in the United States, according to the National Women’s Business Council. According to the council’s 2022 annual report, the number of women-owned businesses increased significantly in recent years. In 2019 there were 5.7 million employer businesses where women accounted for 1.2 million or 20.9% of those businesses, according to the NWBC report. “You pick up Entrepreneur Magazine and you see Sarah Blakely, and you see other celebrities who have started companies, and you think, ‘Wow, that’s so cool to see that they saw a need in the world that wasn’t being field and they brought a unique perspective,’” said Siegle. Walsh College is also looking at partnering with companies that have grant opportunities for minority- or women-owned businesses. Siegle said that she recently gave a presentation to the society of human resources professionals and noted that there were more women than men there. She said it was probably about 70% women. “There’s a creativity and an innovation that women have because of the experiences they’ve had that anybody from a different population would bring. So it’s really nice to see women saying, ‘Hey, maybe there’s a better way to try this,’ or ‘Have you thought about it from this angle?’ and that brings such rich diversity of creativity, and I also think with jobs being so accessible to commuting and to hybrid work it’s probably opened up a lot of things that may have been limitations before,” said Siegle.
