FARMS — Call it a Christmas miracle. The Grosse Pointe Board of Education — which is known for divisiveness that can border on rancor — found itself in a rare moment of unity when selecting its next superintendent.

The board voted 7-0 to name Andrea Tuttle, 50, its new superintendent during a meeting Dec. 12 at Brownell Middle School in Grosse Pointe Farms.

“I’m pleased that we have come together as a board to pick a candidate,” Trustee Colleen Worden said.

Interim Superintendent Christian Fenton, a retired administrator who worked for the district for 37 years, said he believes the last time the board unanimously voted for a superintendent was in the 1980s.

FARMS — When Grosse Pointe Farms K-9 Duke retired last fall, it was hoped that he’d have at least a few years of snoozing on the couch and chasing balls in the yard.

Instead, Duke’s handler, Farms Sgt. Tim Harris, is now spending his first set of holidays without his devoted best pal.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without him,” Harris said of the dog who changed his life, leading to his marriage to Farms public safety dispatcher Paige Thomas — they share a young daughter together — his promotion to sergeant, and the many close friends he made with others in the K-9 community. “I have these people in my life because of Duke.”

Duke and Harris were valiant crimefighters, tracking down dozens of wanted suspects over the years and unearthing hidden contraband such as drugs. But Duke was valued perhaps even more for the intangible impact he had on the world around him.

“Duke was a fixture in the community,” Farms Public Safety Director John Hutchins said. “He was an integral part of the Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety family. He and Tim made a tremendous difference to a lot of kids in the community. He helped to bridge the gaps between police and the community.”

Case against Woods man accused of killing brother moves forward

WOODS — The case against a Grosse Pointe Woods man accused of murdering his brother will now move downtown to 3rd Circuit Court in Detroit.

During a preliminary examination Dec. 13 in Grosse Pointe Woods Municipal Court, Judge Theodore Metry agreed with prosecutors to bind over defendant Edmond Doheny for trial on charges of open murder and felony firearm. Doheny is accused of fatally shooting his youngest sibling, brother Dennis Doheny, 19, in the head Oct. 6 at the Grosse Pointe Woods home of their grandmother.

Dennis Doheny’s girlfriend of the last two years, Isabella Philippo, was the first witness called to the stand by Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor James Kehoe. Philippo said she and her cousin, Emma Miller, were using the platform Discord — which Philippo likened to FaceTime — to communicate with Dennis Doheny and celebrate his 19th birthday.

director for Owosso Public Schools since 2010. She was a principal in Owosso Public Schools from 2008 to 2010 and worked as a teacher and principal for other districts before that, including a teaching stint in Perth, Australia. She said she has spent 28 years in education and has elementary and secondary teaching certificates.

Trustee Terence Collins said he had his own “personal concerns” about Tuttle — he didn’t elaborate further on those — but ultimately felt Tuttle offered the “best opportunity for this district at this time.”

“While I don’t agree (with some who contend) our central administration has been gutted … we must have someone (as superintendent) with experience going into next year,” Collins said. “I have some serious concerns going into our budget next year.

I think we need as professional and experienced a person as possible — and it’s still going to be a challenge.”

The district has lost more than half of its central administrators this year.

It’s critical to have a superintendent who can bring everyone together, officials said.

“During almost every one of her (interview) answers, she gave credit to someone else,” Worden said of Tuttle. “That’s important in building a team.”

Vice President Lisa Papas said she was happy to hear that Tuttle was a big advocate of early childhood education and understands the importance of getting the youngest members of the community into the school system.

“I’m very confident she will be a very strong leader,” Papas said. “No prospective

superintendent is perfect. … I think she is the right person at the right time.”

Treasurer Sean Cotton said he felt Tuttle “is someone who is going to be transformative” for the district.

President Ahmed Ismail called Tuttle “pragmatic (and) no nonsense,” and said she’s someone who listens to others.

Board members say 39 candidates applied for the post. Those candidates were whittled down to seven who were called in for public interviews Dec. 6 and 7 at Brownell. From those candidates, the board held a special meeting at Brownell on a Saturday — Dec. 9 — to determine who the two finalists would be, with board members ranking their top three from the seven interviewees. Based on those rankings, the finalists were A.J. Staniszewski, a native of the Pointes and director in Mapleton Public Schools in Colorado, and Tuttle.

Staniszewski got considerable support from family, friends and others in the community, who attested to his intelligence, integrity and skills as an educator, but ultimately it was Tuttle’s experience as a superintendent that led the board to select her over him.

“I just don’t think it’s the right time for him (to be the GPPSS superintendent),” Collins said.

Like many other board members, Collins was hopeful the district could find another administrative role for Staniszewski.

Although she’s not a native of the district like Staniszewski, Tuttle has ties to the Pointes. Her mother grew up on Audubon Road in Grosse Pointe Park, “So I spent quite a bit of time in this area,” she told the board during her first interview Dec. 7. Two of her siblings live in the Pointes and her cousin is a part-owner of the Cadieux Café, a longtime east side staple.

Tuttle has a bachelor’s degree in management and fine arts from Alma College, a master’s degree in education and school principalship from Central Michigan University and a doctorate of education in education leadership from CMU. At press time, the board was expected to work with Tuttle to hammer out a contract.

It wasn’t known exactly when she might start, but some officials said it would likely be around Feb. 1.

Duke Harris recalled driving around the Pointes on Halloween and getting photos of kids dressed as police officers with Duke.

He would also hand out baseball cards with Duke’s photo and interesting facts. Harris and Duke frequently gave demonstrations in parks, classrooms and other venues, where Harris could explain the science behind what Duke was trained to do.

Among K-9s — already some of the smartest and best-trained dogs around — Duke was exceptional. As a last-minute entry and with only a week to prepare, Duke and Harris received a trophy for third place in criminal apprehension at the United States Police Canine Association Region 19 competition, which took place Aug. 4 to Aug. 8, 2019, in and around Heins Field in Sterling Heights. Only two points separated the firstplace winner from the third-place winner.

“He had a near perfect run,” Harris said after the competition.

Duke and Harris became local legends for their ability to track suspects, narcotics, guns and the like.

“Quite often, Detroit police would ask for Duke and Tim before one of their own dogs — that’s how good he was,” Hutchins said.

Harris said Detroit police called “all the time.” And he welcomed that.

“The reason Duke and I were so successful is, I never said no,” Harris said. “I didn’t care about the overtime. … I wanted us to be good when our community needed us.”

All of those runs in Detroit honed Duke’s skills. Harris said they once searched for a missing child in Davison, and they did searches for bodies.

“It made us really good,” Harris said.

“He found a lot of drugs, a lot of guns, a lot of people.”

They also trained frequently, and with dogs and handlers Harris said were “some of the best in the world,” including members of the U.S. Border Patrol Tactical Unit, U.S. Army Rangers and the British Special Air Service.

While he might have looked fierce, when he wasn’t chasing the bad guys, Duke was a softie who loved all the attention and pets that he got — and playing with his favorite rubber ball, a reward for a job well done. Harris took him to hospitals multiple times over the years, where he brought smiles and joy to children undergoing treatment.

“The dog made it easier to start up a conversation (with law enforcement),” Hutchins said. “Duke was always super friendly to anyone that walked up to him and loved to be petted. … He loved to socialize and be around people. He was just so well-mannered and had a great personality and disposition.”

Harris said he “got lucky” with Duke, because his patience and sociability made him ideal for being around people. He even tolerated things like wearing a reindeer nose and antlers for Christmas and sitting in a race car for Racing for Kids to the Hill.

“He was always game for doing some goofy stuff,” Harris recalled with a smile.

Harris said the community and his department were extremely supportive of Duke. In fact, he said community support was the reason the Farms was able to launch a K-9 program.

In spring 2014, Grosse Pointe Farms businesswoman, philanthropist and dog lover Gretchen Valade — who died in December 2022 — offered to purchase a K-9 for the Farms and fund the program; working dogs generally have a working career of about eight to 10 years. Because of Valade’s love of jazz, the Farms’ K-9 was named Duke for jazz great Duke Ellington.

Harris was one of seven officers who applied to be the city’s K-9 handler. He selected Duke — then a 13-month-old pup who had

Harris is now in charge of the Farms’ K-9 program. Officer Richard Rosati and his K-9, Rocco, took over for Duke when he retired in 2022.

Duke was just over 10 years old when he died on July 1. He had been at the Farms Public Safety Department office that morning — Harris usually brought him in when he was working because everyone liked seeing Duke, who would hang around the office while Harris was on patrol. Aside from sleeping more, Harris said Duke hadn’t shown any signs of ill health, so it was a shock when he died suddenly at home. Duke is now buried at Harris’ cottage in West Branch. He was supposed to be the ring bearer at the wedding of Harris and Thomas in August.

The couple set up a memorial chair at their wedding instead for the dog who brought them together when Thomas was working in Grosse Pointe Park and Duke ambled up to her one day while Harris was at the Park’s Public Safety Department.

“It really did change my life forever,” Harris said. “I wish I could go back and start it all again. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

been born in Gerbisbach, Germany, on April 3, 2013, — on May 4, 2014, from among the other prospective K-9s at Von der haus Gill German Shepherds Inc. in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Harris said St. Clair Shores police officer Chris Periatt — who was the handler of K-9 Hondo, who died in 2016 — advised him to pay attention not to the dog’s appearance, but to his nose. With his striking, solid black coat, Duke didn’t look like the standard police dog, but Harris could see he was fast, agile and friendly — and he knew he needed a social dog in the Pointes.

“This was the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had in my life,” Harris said.

“It changed my whole life. … I can’t thank the community enough. … Being able to have an impact on people’s lives with him — that’s because of the community.”

The bond between K-9 and handler is a powerful one.

“He was with Duke night and day,” Hutchins said. “It was more than just having a pet — they were work partners. … They were together more than most spouses are.”

Harris — who has two older sons from his first marriage — can attest to the closeness of his relationship with Duke.

“He was my whole world,” Harris said.

“He was with me more than anybody else.

STUDENTS HONORED FOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT During an Oct. 24 Grosse Pointe Board of Education meeting, National Merit Award finalists and commended students were recognized.

Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services Roy Bishop Jr. said all high school juniors in the United States — an estimated 1.5 million — take the PSAT, or Preliminary SAT. Of those students, he said the College Board identifies roughly 34,000 students who are to be commended and 16,000 who are classified as semifinalists, which works out to equate to the top 2.2% of test-takers and the top 1.1% of test-takers, respectively. Bishop said several students from Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South high schools were among those commended: Vera Bresser, Justin Conn, Sean DeGrand, Benjamin Grand, Dagueneau Jewell, Paul Kaminski, Julia Liagre, Aakash Nagori, Liam Raether, Massimo Todesco and Cassidy Woolums. The semifinalists were Madeline Kitchen, Andres Linke and Sage Porter.

Two students were also recipients of the National African American Recognition Award, which Bishop said is “an honor for academically exceptional African American students who have scored in the top 10% of the state on the PSAT or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP exams by their junior year.” To qualify for this award, he said students also need to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Recipients of the National African American Recognition Award were Gianna Lloyd and Kaleb Overton.

While not all the recipients of these honors were able to attend the meeting, those who were present were called to the stage to be recognized by school officials and meeting attendees.

HEAR TALKS, SUPPORT ART ORGANIZATION

The Grosse Pointe Artists Association’s lecture series, Your Old Mansion, continues with a lecture at 2 p.m. Jan. 14 at The War Memorial, 32 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Farms. Jonathan Quint, a doctoral candidate at the University of Michigan, will discuss important figures and events in colonial Detroit. Grosse Pointe Farms-based nonprofit Kevin’s Song — which is dedicated to suicide prevention and offering hope and healing to survivors — is seeking nominees for its 2024 Saving a Life award. The honor is given to an individual or an organization that has shown exceptional commitment to community service in suicide prevention.

“Our ‘Saving the Life Award’ celebrates those who are at the forefront of suicide prevention, embodying our shared commitment for a future that is free from suicide,” Kevin’s Song Executive Director Jennifer Fair Margraf said in a press release. “There are so many people across the state who go above and beyond when it comes to addressing this complex issue and its impact. We hope to learn more about their efforts and encourage Michiganders to submit a nomination for someone deserving in their community.”

SHORT PLAYS NEEDED

Through midnight Dec. 31, Grosse Pointe Theatre will be accepting entries for its 2024 Take Ten: Ten-Minute Play Festival, which will be staged June 13-15. This year’s theme is “What if…” All plays must incorporate this theme and, according to a press release, “show how the main character (protagonist) or the character causing conflict (antagonist) consider several well- thought-out optional solutions to the issues they’re facing, either individually or together.”

Scripts must be properly formatted and no longer than seven to 10 pages. The show should be set in contemporary times, limited to a cast of two to four people. It should feature minimal set, makeup, prop and costume needs, and there should be no scene breaks.

There’s no fee to enter, but the actors and director of selected plays must be members of GPT by the time of the performance; annual membership dues are $50. The playwright’s identifying information — name, address, email and phone number — should only appear on the email cover sheet and not anywhere on the script. GROSSE POINTE PARK — It may not happen often, but sometimes porch pirates do get caught in the act.

That was the case when police responded to a report of a package being stolen from a front porch in the 1000 block of Somerset Avenue at around 3:03 p.m. Dec. 11. A witness was able to provide police with a description of the getaway vehicle, which police spotted in the area and attempted to pull over, only for the suspects to flee.

A police report states that stop sticks were used to safely end the vehicle chase, which then turned into a foot pursuit as the two suspects — a 15-year-old male and a 17-year-old female, both of Detroit — tried to evade capture.

During a Dec. 11 Grosse Pointe Park City Council meeting, Public Safety Director James Bostock said the chase ended around St. Jean Street on Detroit’s east side.

Inside the vehicle the suspects had been driving, he said, police recovered about 20 to 25 packages that had been stolen from multiple homes in the Park.

“Excellent work,” Park City Councilman Timothy Kolar said.

Because this is a property crime and the suspects are juveniles, Bostock said their jail time “is going to be nil until their court date.” The suspects were taken to the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility after their arrest but weren’t expected to stay in custody for long.

“Some of them see it as a game, see it as a joke,” Bostock said of suspects arrested

for crimes like these; he said vehicle theft suspects are also often young. He said he’s heard suspects say as they’re leaving the Park lockup that they’ll be back.

“We’re doing everything that we can on our (end) to make sure that it stops,” Bostock said.

The suspects were facing a number of possible charges, including fleeing and eluding, larceny, and receiving and concealing stolen property.

Police urge residents to call them immediately if they see any suspicious activity in their neighborhood.

CITY — A Grosse Pointe City Council member recently was recognized for his many years of service to his community.

Donald Parthum Jr. — who served on the council for 16 years, starting in 2007 — was presented with a resolution during the Nov. 20 Grosse Pointe City Council meeting. Parthum wasn’t reelected in November.

“I just want to thank the citizens for the privilege and honor of being able to serve you for the past 16 years,” Parthum said.

Mayor Sheila Tomkowiak read the resolution aloud at the meeting before presenting it to Parthum. The resolution states that Parthum “will always be known for his logical thinking, thoughtful insight, consideration of issues, and commitment to Grosse Pointe,” and notes that he “helped to successfully steer the City through the Great Recession with no reduction in services, and worked diligently with fellow Council Members and civic groups on many projects such as the construction of a new City parking structure, several Master Plan updates, the creation of new Public Safety and Public Service buildings, renovation of the Municipal Court and City Council Chambers, as well as many other routine but important Council decisions.”

Fellow council members also acknowledged Parthum’s contributions.

“I definitely want to thank Don for his guidance and service,” City Councilman Terence Thomas said. “(He’s) always been very straightforward and transparent — (I) definitely want to recognize that because it’s not common.”

City Councilman Seth Krupp thanked Parthum “for his years of service and his mentorship and guidance,” a sentiment echoed by City Councilwoman Maureen Juip, who said Parthum had been “very generous” with his guidance and mentorship.

City Councilman Christopher Walsh, who has been on the council for the last 20 years, served with Parthum for Parthum’s entire tenure.

“Thank you very much,” Walsh told him. “It’s been enjoyable to serve with you.

People don’t understand that it is a sacrifice to give up your time and your energy (to be on the council).”

They began using Discord the evening of Oct. 5, the day before Dennis Doheny’s birthday Oct. 6. While they were using the video feature on Discord, Philippo said, she could see that Dennis Doheny was in his bedroom. Later, she started texting her boyfriend. At around 12:33 a.m. Oct. 6, Philippo said, Dennis Doheny stopped communicating with her and Miller, but the audio portion of his Discord feed remained on.

“We heard a male voice crying,” Philippo said. She said she and Miller heard the male — who they assumed at that time to be Dennis Doheny — say, “‘I’m so sorry,’” and “‘Hold your head.’”

Miller corroborated that testimony during her time on the witness stand.

“Dennis stopped responding to us and we heard muffled voices and a male voice, high-pitched, obviously in distress,” Miller said. She said she didn’t know who that male voice belonged to at the time.

Grosse Pointe Woods public safety officer Jarod Smith, who was the first officer to respond to the scene, said Edmond Doheny met police at a door on the west side of the home, near the spot where he had placed his brother on the kitchen floor. Smith said Edmond Doheny was “very shaken up (and) appeared to be intoxicated at the time.” He also said Edmond Doheny was “sweaty” and “covered in blood — both his arms, face, neck.”

Smith said Edmond Doheny was applying pressure to his brother’s wound.

Later that morning, in a holding cell in the Woods after his arrest, Smith said he heard Doheny say, “‘Please forgive me — he was such a good boy,’” and “‘I’m going to hell.’”

Police recovered a single empty 9 mm shell casing consistent with the AR 9 mm pistol found near the computer chair where Dennis Doheny was sitting when he was shot.

“At some point … there was a single gunshot fired,” Kehoe said. “(It) entered through the back of Mr. (Dennis) Doheny’s skull and exited out the front.”

Grosse Pointe Woods Detective Miles Adams, who also responded to the scene, said they recovered other guns in the home as well, but the pistol was the only one that had blood on it.

When questioned by Doheny’s defense attorney, Robert Ihrie, Adams said that to the best of his knowledge, all the weapons they recovered were legally owned and purchased.

The suppressor on the AR pistol was legal as well, Adams said.

A suppressor on the gun, Kehoe said, is the reason neither Philippo nor Miller reported hearing a loud noise before Dennis

Doheny ceased communication with them.

“The suppressor muffled or muted the sound (of the gunshot),” Kehoe said.

Ihrie asked Philippo about the relationship between Edmond and Dennis Doheny.

She said she had never seen them argue, only tease each other the way brothers often do.

“From my point of view, they had a good relationship,” Philippo said.

Neither Miller nor police had personal knowledge of the relationship between the brothers.

Ihrie, who has insisted from the beginning that the shooting was a tragic accident, asked the court to dismiss the open murder charge. Open murder contains both the charges of first-degree murder and seconddegree murder; it’s up to a jury to decide whether the evidence shows that the defendant is guilty of first- or second-degree murder.

“There has been zero evidence of premeditation in this case. … This is a gross overcharge in this case,” Ihrie said. “I believe if the Prosecutor’s Office had any evidence of malice, they would have brought it forward.”

Kehoe argued that proving guilt of second-degree murder doesn’t require evidence of malice, nor is the word “malice” included in the state’s definition of second-degree murder.

“When you point a gun at the back of someone’s head … there’s only one thing that could happen,” Kehoe said.

Kehoe added that Edmond Doheny being intoxicated at the time of the shooting “doesn’t matter” with regard to intent.

Ihrie agreed that the prosecution doesn’t need to show premeditation in an open murder charge, “but they have to show intent. … There was no testimony by anybody that (Edmond Doheny) pointed a gun at anybody. … Guns go off all the time and hit people mistakenly. … That does not equate to intent.”

He said none of the witnesses claimed to have seen Edmond Doheny pointing a gun at anyone.

“It may have been he was holding a gun,” Ihrie said of his client.

Ihrie also argued that there “was no reckless behavior that was shown” by the prosecution.

“This was just a terrible, terrible accident,” Ihrie said after the hearing.

Kehoe said the remarks made by Edmond Doheny after the shooting “are statements of admission.”

At press time, Edmond Doheny was scheduled to appear in 3rd Circuit Court for an arraignment on information at 9 a.m. Jan. 3. A judge hadn’t been assigned to the case before the Dec. 21 issue of the Grosse Pointe Times went to press.

Grosse Pointe Woods resident forges path in racing

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — Nolan Allaer was a go-getter long before he got behind the wheel of a race car.

Allaer, a 21-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods resident and University Liggett School graduate, was a racetrack enthusiast at a young age, supporting his father, Robert Allaer — a two-time runoff champion on the Sports Car Club of America series — at every race, but also networking in the process with other racers.

“We used to joke that he was a track rat,” Nolan’s father, Robert Allaer, said. “He’d go around the paddock with a spray bottle and a rag, a cute little kid, and come up and say, ‘Hey, can I clean your car?’ People would let him, and he wouldn’t ask

for money, but they’d pay him and he’d come back with a bunch of cash.”

From the spray bottle to champagne showers, Nolan Allaer’s racing achievements have stretched far beyond what he ever could have pictured for himself in the world of racing.

The SCCA, which is a sanctioning body for racing, rallying and autocross in the U.S., holds the Formula Ford and Formula Continental, which are SCCA National Championship Runoff events that feature the top amateur racers in the SCCA, and Nolan Allaer has become a regular on the scene.

He recommended that residents “be vigilant” and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods to police as soon as possible. “These organized transnational criminals do not respect county, state, or even national borders, so it is incumbent on us across all those boundaries to work together to hold them accountable,” Bouchard said in a press release. “Having Attorney General Nessel charge them in fashion that recognizes that this is an ongoing criminal enterprise subject to greater penalties is a critical step for us to better protect our communities.”

The Chilean nationals all entered the United States legally, Nessel said.

METRO DETROIT — After a multijurisdictional investigation involving numerous law enforcement agencies and a Michigan Attorney General’s Office task force, suspects have been arrested in two sets of crime sprees across the state.

Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the arrests in what she called “two flagrant crime waves in our state” during a press conference Dec. 11 at the Detroit branch of the attorney general’s office.

One of those sets of arrests involved a transnational crime ring said to be responsible for sophisticated home invasions between Feb. 3 and 11 in Ada Township, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Grosse Pointe Farms, Rochester and Rochester Hills. Nessel said the three suspects now in custody — all of whom are Chilean nationals — have been charged with one count of conducting a criminal enterprise — a 20-year felony — and eight counts of second-degree home invasion, a 15-year felony. They are said to be members of what the FBI calls the “South American Theft Group.”

Nessel said the three are currently in custody in Indiana on similar charges; they arrived in Michigan from Los Angeles Feb. 1.

Law enforcement officials said the home invasion suspects targeted affluent areas, and Nessel said the losses “measure in the millions and millions of dollars.” She said the suspects are accused of stealing valuables such as cash, jewelry and safes. They reportedly broke into homes when no one was present, using jammers and other technology to disable alarm systems and security cameras.

“It sounds like a TV show,” Grosse Pointe Shores Public Safety Director Kenneth Werenski said of this South American crime ring, which struck a home in the Shores two years ago. “The truth is stranger than fiction.”

The suspects who were recently arrested didn’t commit the Grosse Pointe Shores home invasion, Werenski said. He said the FBI used DNA and other evidence collected

by Shores officers to prosecute suspects in the 2021 string of crimes.

Nessel said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard has assembled a multijurisdictional task force that includes more than a dozen southeastern Michigan police departments to combat these types of crimes.

METRO DETROIT — It’s easy to forget about safety when dealing with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

But experts say this is a bad time to let your guard down, whether in regard to fire or crime at home.

Take a bite out of holiday crime

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, larcenies and robberies rise by roughly 20% each December. A 2020 report on the website Alarms.org showed that Michigan had the highest holiday crime rate among Midwestern states and ranked 31st nationwide in terms of having the most crime during this time; Florida had the highest holiday crime rate.

“It starts with keeping your doors and windows locked,” said A.J. Tononi, a sales representative for Guardian Alarm, a national provider based in Southfield. “Having a relationship with your neighbors helps.”

He said outdoor lighting deters crooks, particularly at night, and motion-activated lights are also great.

“The biggest and best recommendation is (to have) a home security system and cameras,” Tononi said.

Public safety professionals concur.

“Statistics prove alarms deter crime,” Grosse Pointe Shores Public Safety Director Kenneth Werenski said. “Activate your alarm. Make sure your cameras are working.”

Werenski said leaving a light on when you’re gone also helps, as it leaves the impression that someone is home.

While crime doesn’t spike in Grosse Pointe Shores over the holidays, that’s due to the nature of the city, which is small and has no commercial businesses.

“My experience is, crime goes up between Nov. 1 and Jan. 1,” Werenski said of regional trends. “People are desperate this time of year. They need to keep warm. They need to feed their addictions.”

Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Director John Kosanke said package theft and scams are up at this time of year. Don’t answer calls from unknown callers and independently verify calls that seem to come from legitimate sources, like a utility company or the Internal Revenue Service, as scammers use spoofing to make it appear

that a call is coming from a real agency when it isn’t.

“With the holidays, it brings about opportunities for criminals,” Kosanke said.

“We have the porch pirates this time of year.

People are taking a lot of packages.”

Having packages sent to a secured post office box or a person’s workplace are a couple of ways to protect these items from being stolen.

Werenski said identity theft “is huge this time of year,” so people should routinely monitor their credit reports, credit card transactions and bank accounts for unauthorized activity. With so many shopping online these days, Kosanke warned residents to not click on pop-up ads when browsing the internet, as their devices could get infected with malware or the companies might not be legitimate.

Kosanke and Werenski both remind people to be aware of their surroundings, including when unloading gifts and food from their vehicles.

“Crime doesn’t take that long,” Kosanke said. “Crime can take seconds.”

Regular safety precautions like keeping vehicles locked, not leaving the fobs inside and taking valuables like purses and briefcases inside or putting them out of sight in the trunk are also especially vital around the holidays, as criminals know people might be more prone to neglect these steps because they’re frazzled.

“All the thieves are looking for is an opportunity, and you’ve got to not give them that,” Kosanke said.

Neighbors can also help by calling police immediately if they spot unusual activity.

“You know the habits of your neighbors,” Werenski said. “If you see something, call us. We all work together.”

Prevent holiday fires from happening

Candles — which seem to be more popular during the holidays — were responsible for 7,900 residential fires that resulted in more than 720 injuries, dozens of deaths and almost $270 million in property damage between 2013 and 2017 alone, according to the National Fire Protection Agency.

“You want to make sure you’re not leaving them unsupervised,” Kosanke said.

exercise caution with pets and children, keep them away from flammable material like curtains, place them on a flat and stable surface, and use a candle snuffer to extinguish them.

Werenski said all families should have a fire safety plan in place that includes escape routes and a meeting spot outside. Anyone with a wood-burning fireplace should have it professionally cleaned as well, he said.

Replace worn or broken holiday lights, don’t use outdoor lights inside, follow the manufacturer’s directions and only use lights labeled by a qualified testing laboratory, Ko-

sanke said.

Kosanke said people should turn off holiday lights before they go to bed or when they’re going to be gone, keep real Christmas trees adequately watered and keep the tree at least 3 feet away from heat sources. He said people should also make sure the tree isn’t blocking any exits.

“Christmas is a great time of year,” Kosanke said. “Unfortunately, we do see tragedies this time of year that could have been avoided.”

A second defendant, 20, of Detroit, is charged with one count of conducting a criminal enterprise and seven counts of organized retail crime, a five-year felony. The third defendant 20, of Detroit, is charged with one count of conducting a criminal enterprise and seven counts of first-degree retail fraud.

However, Nessel said they’re not the only suspects believed to be involved in this group.

“This remains an active investigation,” Nessel said. “There’s more people involved.”

She said Grosse Pointe City Public Safety Detective Michael Narduzzi was the one who first identified the string of what are called “push-out” thefts at Lululemon stores.

The retail fraud suspects are alleged to have struck Lululemon stores in Grosse Pointe City, Ann Arbor, Clinton Township, Birmingham, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Novi and Rochester Hills. They are also said to have struck Ulta Beauty locations in Canton, Northville, Shelby Township and Warren.

Narduzzi said this crime ring has been responsible for about 49 incidents in Michigan and Toledo since last December.

“They’re brazen,” Narduzzi said.

“They’re prolific.”

Nessel said the suspects enter stores as a small group, collect as much expensive merchandise as they can carry or wheel out in a shopping cart and run to an awaiting getaway vehicle. The stolen goods are then either sold directly or in bulk to a fence operation. She said these thefts have cost stores more than $200,000 in total.

“This is more than just about things,” Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter said. “It is about peace of mind in our communities.”

Because of the FORCE Team — which was formed by the AG’s office in January, with funding from the state Legislature — suspects in these cases face stronger charges and more potential prison time. FORCE includes special agents from the attorney general’s office and MSP and works collaboratively with retailers and local law enforcement, and recently announced a partnership with the FBI’s Detroit Fraud and Financial Crimes Task Force.

Motor City Rockers return to form in 2023, hold second place in conference

FRASER — This year, it’s been all about hockey for the Motor City Rockers.

The offseason didn’t include general manager and head coach searches, discussions about whether there was going to be a team or not, or constant cosmetic ideas for inside the arena, but rather fully focused on what was taking place on the ice heading into the Rockers’ second season in the Federal Prospects Hockey League.

“We always joked that we needed players and we needed a printer,” Rockers coach Gordie Brown said. “You needed everything from the beginning whether it was jerseys or every little thing. Now, you’ve gone through the process of the year and you can kind of understand how to get the players that you want, build the culture you want, and get the employees behind the scenes we need to run an organization like this. Heading

into the second year, I don’t want to say it’s smoother, but you just learn a lot from the first year that you can incorporate into the second year.”

Brown, in his second season as head coach, witnessed his team clinch third place in the Continental Conference, securing a playoff berth, but two straight losses in the first round would put an end to the Rockers’ inaugural season.

Most coaches in the FPHL tend to see a significant roster turnover for the next season, leaving questions about what the team will look like in the coming year, but the Rockers picked up right where they left off with a stacked lineup of returning veterans.

“We felt really confident coming back, especially with how many returners we have,” defenseman Nicholas Magill-Diaz said. “At this level, you don’t get half of the returners we got back. We got just about everybody with three or four new faces, so we See ROCKERS on page 22A

CITY — Two new officers recently joined the Grosse Pointe Public Safety Department, both of them bringing previous law enforcement experience to their new roles.

Andre Jones, 26, of Lathrup Village, and Mark Dombrowski, 45, of Grosse Pointe Woods, started with the department around Sept. 5. City Public Safety Director John Alcorn introduced the officers to City leaders during a Nov. 20 Grosse Pointe City Council meeting in the municipal courtroom.

Jones had been an officer with the Detroit Metro Airport police for four years and the Detroit Police Department for 1 1/2 years. Dombrowski was a member of the Wayne County Sheriff ’s Office for 15 years. Alcorn said both were certified police officers before coming to the City, and Dombrowski had risen to the rank of sergeant with the Sheriff ’s Office.

However, because public safety officers also need to fight fires, Alcorn said both new hires needed to attend the fire academy, which he said is “backbreaking work” that requires tremendous physical fitness and literal heavy lifting.

“They both did an outstanding job,” Alcorn said of their time in the fire academy.

“They represented our department outstandingly.”

The council, city officials and residents at the meeting gave the new officers a standing ovation.

Both officers said they were happy to be working for the City.

“It’s been a great experience,” Jones said before the council meeting.

Dombrowski, who previously worked for neighboring Grosse Pointe Park in parking enforcement, was enthused about working close to home.

“It’s been great so far,” Dombrowski said.

The newcomers replace two officers who left recently. Officer Lucas Rucinski departed for a position with the Warren Police Department, while officer Dean Turk left for a position with the Farmington Police Department, Alcorn said.

The suspects are said to have entered the business and not asked for assistance. An employee told police the suspects looked at store personnel to see if they were being watched. WOODS — An unknown suspect is said to have stolen a bottle of over-thecounter Excedrin from a vehicle while it was parked in the 19500 block of Mack Avenue at 10 p.m. Dec. 8. A police report states that the suspect smashed out a vehicle window and was rummaging through the interior when the vehicle’s owner confronted him.

Assault alleged

PARK — Police responded to a home in the 1300 block of Somerset Avenue at around 7:48 p.m. Dec. 2 regarding a fight between friends that is said to have become physically aggressive. According to a police report, a 65-year-old Detroit woman was arrested after she allegedly pushed, yelled at and assaulted a Grosse Pointe Park woman after an argument. The suspect, who could be facing assault and disorderly conduct charges, was arrested, cited and released.

WOODS — An unknown suspect is said to have stolen the contents of a FedEx package after it was deliver to a home in the 2000 block of Lennon Street at 11:20 a.m.

Police said the driver also had no insurance and his license was suspended. His vehicle was impounded.

Driver found to be under influence of drugs

FARMS — Police pulled over a 26-yearold Grosse Pointe City woman in the area of Mack Avenue and Opal Street at around

9:50 p.m. Dec. 4 for having illegally tinted windows. According to a police report, the driver also smelled of marijuana and admitted to using marijuana in her vehicle, and she became “argumentative and uncooperative” with police, cursing and yelling at officers and threatening to run them over.

The driver allegedly made threats against the family members of officers on the scene as well. One officer on the scene also smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath, leading to field sobriety tests that the driver failed. The driver refused to take a preliminary breath test. She was arrested and is facing possible charges including being disorderly and operating under the influence of drugs. Police said they found a freshly burnt blunt under the driver’s seat, as well as a partially consumed bottle of NyQuil in the center cup holder.

Refuse Authority audit shows financial reporting in good shape

SHORES — The Grosse Pointes-Clinton Refuse Disposal Authority completed another fiscal year — on June 30 — with all its financial records in good order.

CPA Lynn Gromaski, who handles the finances for the GPCRDA, said the audit of the 2022 to 2023 fiscal year passed muster with the authority’s auditor, Rochester Hills-based Ramie E. Phillips Jr. “It was … a clean opinion — there were no management letter items,” Gromaski told the GPCRDA Board during its last regular meeting of 2023 Nov. 14 at Grosse Pointe Shores City Hall.

In his letter to the board, Phillips said the same.

“In my opinion, the financial statements … present fairly, in all material respects, the respective financial position of the governmental activities, the business-type activities, and each major fund, of the Authority, as of June 30, 2023, and the respective changes in the financial position for the year then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally

The Rockers are currently in second in the Continental Conference to the tune of a 9-7 record this season, with six players having double-digit point totals already this season.

Scott Coash, who led the Rockers in goals (40) and points (72) last season, has a team-high 10 goals and 19 points this season, while forward Brad Reitter, who was third on the team in points with 47, has a team-high 12 assists this year.

Returning forward Declan Conway is building off his 52-point season in 2022, second on the team, with six goals and four assists already, while defenseman Jameson Milam (11 points), defenseman Josh Colten (13 points), and forward Pavel Svintsov (16 points) round out the group.

Svintsov, a first-year player for the Rockers, previously played in the Russian Student Hockey League where he tallied 12 goals and 17 assists last season.

Returning goaltender Trevor Babin has been stellar in net with a 7-4 record and a .930 save percentage this season.

With the majority of the team back and just a pair of new names and faces, MagillDiaz said it’s been the team’s chemistry that has translated to the success so far.

“Just from last year to this year, we’re a lot more comfortable having those uncomfortable conversations when it comes to people making mistakes or being held accountable for each other,” Magill-Diaz said.

“It just makes it that much easier.”

Chemistry has always been a strength of the Rockers, and look no further than their

success last season in just their first year together as a group.

The Rockers’ locker room is a tight-knit group, and the sense of care and respect is a feeling that Brown said the Rockers deliver from top to bottom in the organization.

“I think what it comes down to is that we’re pretty honest,” Brown said. “We tell them what the expectations are and we’re not lying to them. This is the expectation, and we have those conversations with the players, and if you don’t believe myself or Nick Field, the GM, this is how we do it, and if you don’t want to do it, we’re not for you. I believe the players have our backs on that.”

The Rockers jumped out to a 9-3 record this season before dropping four straight, holding leads in three of the four matchups.

“Our issue is we get up, we get a lead, and then we stop playing,” Brown said. “We stop doing what we did to get the lead, and it’s some habits I got to work on with the guys to create better habits for the guys to get through 60 minutes of hockey.”

The Rockers have battled injuries and illnesses the past couple of weeks, but the Rockers were looking to rebound with a three-game homestand against the Carolina Thunderbirds (Dec. 15), which occurred after press time, and the Elmira River Sharks (Dec. 22 and 23).

With nearly three quarters of the season still left to play, there’s plenty of time for the Rockers to get back on track before the start of the playoffs.

“Really, we just need to stay positive,” defenseman T.J. Delaney said. “With all our success at the beginning of the season, I feel like we didn’t face too much adversity. With guys going down with injuries and us losing four straight, we’re facing that adversity now.

laer is etching his name as one of the premier racers on the circuit.

Through all his accomplishments in his young racing career, Allaer said it was the ability to share the track with his father that stands out the most to him.

Nolan and Robert have gone head-tohead on the SCCA circuit multiple times in the past few years, but nothing was as special as the father-son duo sharing the podium when Nolan took first and Robert took second at the 2023 Formula Continental Runoffs on Sept. 30 this year at Virginia International Raceway.

“The first time I was able to go out there and actually do it with him was just incredible,” Nolan Allaer said. “I can’t even explain the emotions before getting in the car for a winner-take-all where one race decides the champion, and the emotions of following in his footsteps of winning the title last year and defending it this year with him right behind me and to share the podium with him.”

Nolan possesses a racing gene that originates from a long-standing family tradition of racing in SCCA with his father, grandfather and uncle all making their own impact on the racetrack.

His grandfather, Lewis Cooper Jr., continues to race in the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association, while his uncle, Lewis Cooper III, was the last Formula Ford Runoffs champion to win the Runoffs for Ford in 2011.

That was until Nolan paid homage to his uncle by winning the Formula Ford Runoffs Championship on Oct. 1 this year at Virginia International Raceway, a tradition unlike any other in his family tree.

“The Runoffs have always been so important to our family,” Nolan Allaer said.

“My uncle also won the Runoffs before. He won it in 2011 at Formula Ford. Up until this year when I won it at Formula Ford, he was the last Formula Ford champion to have a Ford engine win. Up until this year, it’s all been Honda. This year, I went back and did it in his car, actually. It’s just been like a whole family affair to go to the Runoffs. It’s so important to our family that oftentimes when I was a kid, the kids weren’t even allowed at the tracks because my dad needed to focus. It’s so competitive and means so

much to all of us.”

Racing has brought indescribable feelings for Allaer the past few seasons as he’s made a name for himself, but Allaer only had one true feeling about racing growing up.

Sure, he loved being on the racetrack with his father, but Allaer began taking over the wheel on his own at the age of 4 when he began karting.

By 2008, Allaer was competing in the Florida Karting Championship Series and climbing up the ladder of classes, but that was until the 2011 season came to a close.

“I remember in 2011 that I absolutely despised the sport and did not want to do it,” Allaer said. “I was so sick of it and it was too much pressure for a kid. It was hot in Florida and it was miserable. Even though the driving was fun, the environment of racing wasn’t for me. I wanted to play hockey and I wanted to put all my time into hockey.”

The racing scene may not have been in the cards for Allaer at the time, but his love for cars and passion to one day become an engineer landed Allaer back behind the wheel in 2019 on a virtual racing platform called iRacing, which is a competitive racing simulation video game.

Allaer said his father recognized how much time he was spending behind the virtual wheel, so a graduation gift in 2020 of a lesson at the Waterford Hills Drivers School, an SCCA accredited driving school, was just what Allaer needed to ignite the racing spirit inside him.

On just his second day at the driving school, Allaer was two-tenths off his father’s track record, leaving both Allaer and his father speechless, yet excited for Allaer’s potential on the track.

Allaer took the SCCA scene by storm in the 2021 SCCA National Series, an amateur series, where he finished third in the Formula Continental National Championship and had several podium finishes to top off a stellar rookie season.

“Every day, every session and every outing, I was learning more about the car, more about myself, about how to drive, and about how to be around people on the track,” Allaer said. “Of course I was making many, many mistakes along the way, and if I could go back now, I’d be way, way better than I was. I look back and watch videos and think, ‘Why did I do that, that was terrible,’ but it was all about that learning process of building the results.”

While going through rookie mistakes and finding his footing, it was a bonus having his father on the racetrack with him, who never seemed to let go of the dad mindset even while competing against his son.

“I’d go around a corner and there’d be grass on the track and I’d jump on the team radio and I’d say to the guys, ‘Let Nolan know there’s grass on turn three,’” Robert Allaer said. “As a dad, you can’t ever lose the dad factor. You’re always thinking about your kid.”

Allaer would shift to the SCCA Pro F1600 Championship Series in 2022, tallying two wins and nine podiums as the leading rookie in the series as a part of Team Pelfrey.

The 2023 season brought Allaer to Brackley, England, as he raced for Ammonite Motorsports on the British Racing and Sports Car Club series.

Allaer was able to win a heat race at the BRSCC Formula Ford Festival on Oct. 20 on the Brands Hatch circuit and finish off his overseas season with a 16th place finish at the BRSCC Formula Ford Festival Grand Final on Oct. 21, but Allaer said the accolades couldn’t match up to the impact of the experience.

diately tell that I am a completely different driver than I was before I left for the UK. Ammonite Motorsports definitely taught me a lot about what it takes to be a professional racing driver, where it’s your full life pursuit, and that involves everything on and off the track. Specifically, in the UK, the tracks I hit in that calendar were absolute bucketlist tracks for me. They’re tracks I’ve done in the simulator years before I even knew I was going to be racing. Going to Brands Hatch and running on the same circuits that F1 has been at, like Silverstone, and turning a tire on those hallowed grounds is just an absolute honor.”

Allaer, who is currently a senior at Miami University in Ohio and studying mechanical engineering, said his options are still open for the 2024 season, whether it’s on the Indy NXT scene or a trip back to England for the GB3 series, a rebranded Formula 3 series.

Regardless of where Allaer and his racing career ends up, Allaer said he knows he’s exactly where he’s supposed to be.

“It’s such a blessing to do what I am doing now and have this be my life and my purpose,” Allaer said. “I truly think I found what I was meant to do.”

ROCHESTER HILLS — Daisy Scout Troop 77820, which includes 20 first-graders at Long Meadow Elementary, recently partnered with North Oakland County Toys for Tots to host a multi-neighborhood toy drive after reading about how donations to the organization had declined the last few years.

Organizers said they hoped the collection would make it convenient for those in the neighborhood to donate, give the Daisies a chance to help other kids, and introduce community service as part of earning their “be a sister to every Girl Scout” petal.

The Daisies distributed flyers about the toy drive to their neighbors by going door to door with physical copies and working with their parents to post on neighborhood social media pages.

When a neighbor had an item to donate, the girls would go pick it up. Altogether, they collected 565 items from their neighbors to donate to Toys for Tots.

ROCHESTER HILLS — The Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm is open for drop-in hours noon-3 p.m., with a guided tour of the Van Hoosen farmhouse at 1 p.m., Dec. 23, and 27-30. The 1840 Van Hoosen farmhouse is decorated with boughs of holly, old Christmas cards, family gifts, community cookbooks and a 10-foot Christmas tree.

People will also find the seasonal interactive “All Aboard: Model Railroad Exhibit!” on display in the calf barn.

Included with admission is a guided tour of the farmhouse and Red House, access to all exhibits, and a self-guided tour of the bull barn, the milk house, the equipment barn and Stoney Creek Cemetery. The event is free for museum members, $5 for adults, and $3 for seniors and students.

STATEWIDE — The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, along with cancer centers and other organizations nationwide, recognized November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Lung cancer is the second-most common cancer, not including skin cancer. For women, breast cancer is more common, while prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men.

The institute shared the following statistics about lung cancer.

• About 238,340 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in 2023.

• About 127,070 deaths will result from lung cancer in 2023.

• Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women.

• Lung cancer is responsible for about 1 in 5 of all cancer deaths.

• Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined.

• The yearly number of lung cancer deaths is declining. The estimated number of deaths in 2022 was 130,180.

• The chance that a man will develop lung cancer in his lifetime is about 1 in 16. A woman’s lifetime chance of developing lung cancer is about 1 in 17.

• Around 80% of lung cancer deaths are thought to be a result of smoking.

UTICA DEDICATES PURPLE HEART TRAIL

UTICA — On Veterans Day, the city of Utica honored Purple Heart recipients and dedicated the Utica Purple Heart Trail at the American Legion Post 351, 46146 Cass Ave. The Purple Heart Trail is a nationwide effort to pay tribute to those who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal with sections of roads dedicated to them. Signs are placed along the roads where elected leaders have designated part of the trail. Find more information at purpleheart.org/purplehearttrail.

Mayor Gus Calandrino on his Facebook page called the dedication one of his “proudest moments” as mayor. Many local elected officials were present for the ceremony.

Troy High class raises money for nonprofit

TROY — The Troy High personal communications class recently held its annual dodgeball tournament for charity supporting Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard’s Police Athletic League program, which builds positive relationships through recreation, mentoring and sports.

Competition was fierce, with the senior team declaring victory, and the event raised $14,500 for the kids at PAL. “Sports helps with competition, etiquette, confidence, teamwork, and gives them an opportunity to come here and just be kids and play,” Bouchard said in a press release. “The volunteers at PAL deeply believe that opportunities for relationship-building and high-quality sports should be available to everyone.

No fine print, no asterisk, no exceptions; that’s what they stand by, and that’s why Troy High School’s Personal Communications class chose them this year as the recipient.”

PAL’s goals are to provide more opportunities for young women in sports, to double the number of children served, to develop young athletes so they develop a lifelong love of being active, and to be sure every child has access to a caring coach, and the chance to belong.
