I-75 noise, contamination sink inclusive park plans Troy CDBG park project denied, funds going toward City Hall work instead BY BRENDAN LOSINSKI The city of Troy will move forward with renovations to its City Council chambers after permission to use Community Development Block Grant funds to upgrade a local property to be an inclusive park were denied. The inclusive park, with equipment designed for people of all physical abilities, was intended to be located at 450 Long Lake Road, between Rochester and Livernois roads. A portion of the CDBG funds Troy receives each year from the federal government — administered by the county — had been set aside for several years for the intended use of the park; $685,605 was set aside for the park during the course of three years. However, an environmental impact study indicated that the park could not go on the site, based on the standards of the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, which administers the CDBG funds. SHERIFF CREATES TASK FORCE TO COMBAT RISE IN OC HOME BURGLARIES BY MARY BETH ALMOND malmond@candgnews.com

OAKLAND COUNTY — An increase in thieves breaking into multimillion-dollar homes across northern Oakland County and stealing valuables has prompted Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard to create a new task force targeting what he believes is a transnational crime ring. The Southeast Michigan Collaborate Arrest and Prosecute team, or SEMCAP, is a multi-jurisdictional task force made up of over a dozen police departments throughout southeast Michigan, the Michigan State Police, the FBI and others.

2024 Subaru Outback

The task force is working together to combat organized and trained thieves who have been targeting certain areas of the United States — including Michigan — breaking into affluent homes in search of cash, jewelry, high-end clothing, purses and other products that can be easily shipped and sold. “All of the agencies involved have committed to do all they can to partner and share resources and information,” Bouchard said. “The reason it’s so important is because this group is so highly functional, they are well-trained, and they are targeting our region and other places across the country. We are very much in the crosshairs.” See BURGLARIES on page 20A

old Rochester resident was returning home from work on westbound South Boulevard, near John R Road, when she encountered another motorist who was driving erratically. She told investigators that she tried to keep her distance, believing the driver to be impaired, but ultimately attempted to pass him, honking her horn at him as she did.

Investigators said the driver of the other vehicle then rolled down his window and fired a single shot, striking the side mirror of her Jeep Compass and shattering her window. She was not injured. The victim was able to get the license plate of the other vehicle and reported the matter to the police. See ARREST on page 24A

Kids at the “Breakfast in Whoville” fundraiser Dec. 3 got to help out a good cause while having some fun, like limboing with the Grinch.

A local nonprofit recently gathered community members together for some holiday-themed fun to raise money to help those in need. United Community Family Services, formerly known as the Chaldean American Ladies of Charity, hosted its Breakfast in Whoville fundraiser Dec. 3. It took place at the Shenandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield. Those attending got to stroll through a small-business marketplace, take home some prizes and dance with the Grinch. Melissa Siva, the event coordinator with UCFS, called the event a great success. “Today is our Christmas in Whoville event. It’s basically two events in one day, where we first have a breakfast with Santa, and then we also have a lunch with Santa. Both are fundraisers for our organization.

Experts urge consumers to watch out for scams this holiday season blosinski@candgnews.com

METRO DETROIT — December may be the most wonderful time of the year, but the Christmas season provides ample opportunities for scammers to try to take advantage of someone’s generosity or tight schedule to swindle them out of money. Law enforcement agencies and watchdog groups are offering advice on what the public should be on the lookout for this holiday season. “We had posted stuff on the department Facebook. We had some generic advice,” said Detective Carlo Pizzorni of the Troy police. “There are IRS scams, which are something we’ve seen, people call claiming to be from the IRS and demand to be paid via bitcoin or gift card. There’s a similar scam where people are calling claiming there’s a warrant out for their arrest and they need to pay bail to stay out of prison.” He also warned that some scammers are patient and can cultivate a relationship with someone online for weeks or months before taking advantage of their mark.

“There’s also ‘pig butchering.’ Someone meets someone else through an online app like WhatsApp or Telegram or a dating website, and they create a relationship, speak to them for months on end to convince them the relationship is real,” Pizzorni said. “Eventually, they suggest an investment via wire transfer or cryptocurrency. They send confirmations that the investment is making money to convince them to keep investing more, but eventually they will cut contact with all of this money they were sent.” Lisa Plaggemier, the executive director of the National Cybersecurity Alliance, said the most prevalent scams are deceptive ads that lead people to fraudulent websites, sending gift cards to fraudsters posing as friends or family members, and spoofed shopping sites that mimic legitimate businesses in order to collect personal information or distribute malware. “I think it’s kind of the ‘greatest hits’ of things that the bad guys gravitate toward every year,” she explained. “They’ve just gotten a lot more sophisticated. We all look at how we’re using AI and technology, but they’re

Plane makes emergency landing behind Troy Rec Center

A small plane that took off from the Troy Airport had to make an emergency landing in the baseball field behind the Troy Recreation Center Dec. 10. No one was injured, and the plane made a stable landing in the field. The field was unoccupied at the time of the incident. “It’s not our jurisdiction. The (Federal Aviation Administration) handles matters like this,” said Capt. Josh Jones of the Troy Police Department. “There was some sort of mechanical issue. … There was no crash. There were no injuries. The FAA was contacted. They came out and did an investigation, and they came out and removed (the plane) on Monday (Dec. 11).” The FAA replied to requests for comment with an email. “The pilot of a single-engine Aviat A-1 Husky made an emergency landing on a vacant baseball field due to a reported engine issue around 1 p.m. local time Sunday, Dec. 10 in Troy, Michigan,” FAA representative Elizabeth Isham Cory wrote. “Two people were on board.” Photo provided by Christina Stackhouse

This includes shots of the funeral of Motown Legend Aretha Franklin, billionaire Mike Bloomberg during his 2018 visit to Detroit, the Supremes’ Mary Wilson at the Brewster Projects where she grew up, and President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ visits to Detroit. Tetteh said his goal is to demonstrate that Detroit is not defined solely by its challenges but by its resilience, creativity and triumphs. The Detroit Shoppe is a nonprofit store that showcases the people, places and products of Detroit. Tetteh’s book, “Only in Detroit,” will be offered for sale during the signing. Attorney general warns residents to watch out for duct cleaning scams Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a warning to Michigan residents Dec. 12 to be aware of home air duct cleaning companies that are perpetuating scams or using deceptive practices in Michigan. Some fraudulent companies will launch pop-up ads on social media groups and neighborhood platforms suggesting someone in their neighborhood has used its services. But this is sometimes a lie to “hook” unsuspecting homeowners. Deceitful air duct cleaning companies, referred to as “blow-and-go” establishments, lure consumers in with rock bottom

Some of these companies, if they complete the work, do an inferior job or leave the consumer worse off than before, with dirt and contaminants blown from their HVAC systems onto drapes, carpets and furniture. Tips from the National Air Duct Cleaners Association regarding red flags to watch out for on social media posts include providing no company name, since legitimate businesses will want to showcase the

company and its services; they cannot be found in a Google search and do not provide information, such as an office location or phone number; they have a relatively new social media account whose name does not match the user name in the URL; and they have a social media account that is locked so that no posts, followers or pictures can be seen. Michigan consumers who suspect they are the victim of illegal or predatory business practices are encouraged to contact the Department of Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Team at (517) 335-7599.

Disability Network Eastern Michigan is a center for independent living and serves people with disabilities in Huron, Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair and Tuscola counties. Their hope with the donations is to provide internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption for those in underserved areas. Disability Network Eastern Michigan said many of their clients don’t have digital basics at home, including a computer, that are needed to benefit from the online world — an issue known as the digital divide. They said these laptops will help these individuals search for jobs, obtain employment, receive telehealth, connect with family and resources, and continue to live independently in their own homes. “There are too many people who face challenges in life due to digital divide barriers, especially those in underserved communities,” David Lewis, state president of AT&T Michigan, said in an email. “Not only is access to connectivity vital in bridging the digital divide, but it also helps those with disabilities continue to live indepen-

dently. We are proud to support the mission of Disability Network Eastern Michigan by providing these laptops to those who need them most.” Winn said that programs like this help those with disabilities gain independence and improve their lives in ways that otherwise might be impossible. “Our mission statement notes that we are committed to promoting inclusion for all by breaking down barriers and opening paths towards independence and personal choice, through resources, advocacy information, support, and education,” she said in an email. “This opportunity, thanks to AT&T, does exactly that. Today we are able to break barriers and open paths through access to technology thanks to these generous donations. This new resource creates opportunity to connect with others, participate in programs, join virtual classes, shop for groceries, avoid isolation and attend online medical appointments. This donation provides independence.” She commended AT&T and Human I-T and hopes the community will continue to share resources with those who need them. “Disability Network Eastern Michigan recognizes AT&T for their commitment to inclusivity,” Winn wrote. “We believe the

hile toys and other physical gifts can be quickly forgotten, the sense of pride from learning a new skill is the gift that keeps on giving. So rather than adding to a loved one’s overwhelming stack of belongings, why not consider giving an experience? Sports lessons and classes are a great way to keep a family member active and engaged in the new year. Ice skating, skiing and snowboarding are the perfect ways to escape cabin fever and take advantage of the snowy winter weather. The Birmingham Sports Ice Arena offers ice skating classes for ages 3 to adult of all levels year-round. “A lot of kids get skates for the holidays, and they don’t know how to skate, so they come here and want to take skating lessons,” said Ice Arena Facilities Superintendent Connie Folk. Gift givers can register a loved one for the next eight-week course, which begins the week of Jan. 15, or wait for additional ice skating lessons, which are offered in five sessions throughout the year. Ice skating classes meet once a week for eight weeks and are limited to 12 students. Classes with more than seven students will have two instructors. “If you know how to skate, you will have a better experience when you go to

birthday parties, open skates or even down to the city of Detroit to skate on the outdoor rink,” Folk said. “It just makes it a great gift, because it gives them the opportunity to come out, exercise and learn how to skate so they can skate with their friends.” The Birmingham Ice Sports Arena is located at 2300 E. Lincoln. To register, visit play.bhamgov.org. There are also many ski areas in southeast Michigan, including Alpine Valley, Mount Brighton, Mount Holly and Pine Knob. Pine Knob Ski Resort — 7778 Sashabaw Road in Clarkston — offers ski and snowboard rentals, with private or group lessons for all ages, led by certified instructors. Pine Knob has 17 runs, six chairlifts, four tow ropes, two wonder carpets and some terrain parks. Many intermediate and avid skiers hope a season ski pass will be under the tree, allowing them to ski or snowboard as many days as they want, all season. Another fun gift-giving option that can be personalized to fit a variety of interests is a gift card to the Troy Community Center. “People can use it however they want to,” said Troy Community Center Recreation Director Brian Goul. “A lot of people give gift cards that people like to use for our

outdoor pool in the summertime or for a fitness pass during the year at the community center.” The 127,000-square-foot building offers everything from year-round swim lessons, pickleball lessons and basketball leagues to karate, yoga and intro to sports classes. “In the new year, people usually want to get physically fit and get in better shape, so giving them a gift card to come and get a fitness pass and work out or be able to learn pickleball is a great way for people to do something that they might not normally do for themselves,” Goul said. A popular option is the “Pickleball 101: Intro for Beginners” class, which teaches participants the basic rules, strokes, scoring and strategies of the game. The center also offers indoor swim lessons year-round for preschoolers to adults, with the next six-week session starting in January, followed by another in late March. To expose kids to a variety of sports — including soccer, football, volleyball, T-ball, lacrosse, hockey and more — the Coach Dave Intro to Sports classes are offered for ages 3-6. “Participating in sports is a great way for kids to meet other kids, get the social skills they need, learn how to be a good teammate and have fun,” he said. Troy’s City Council chamber will receive ADA upgrades using CDBG funds after the funds were denied for another project.

0441-2349

“The park isn’t going to happen there. The federal government won’t let us do it,” explained Troy Community Affairs Director Cindy Stewart. “There had to be an environmental study. It was determined that due to the proximity to I-75, there was too much noise and the land was contaminated from what was there before. It was an industrial building on that site formerly.” Troy’s Department of Public Works Director, Kurt Bovensiep, clarified that the industrial contamination isn’t dangerous to the public, but it was prevalent enough to be a factor when the environmental study was performed. “It was more about the noise from I-75,” he said. “The thresholds for soil contamination are based on if you are putting houses there. The contamination was big enough that it couldn’t be cheaply remediated, but it was low enough where we didn’t need to remediate it. There are (no chemicals) there that people need to be concerned about. If there was, we would address it.” CDBG funds can only be used on certain types of projects or in certain low-to-medium income areas. Thus the city of Troy had to find a different project to use the funds on that qualified under HUD’s standards. “We all decided the project couldn’t get the funding (for the park),” said Bovensiep. “To the best of my knowledge, this was the first time we applied for a project that we couldn’t get the funds for. … In an effort not to lose that money, we looked at other projects. (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessibility was a qualifying category. We recognized the council chambers had limited seating for wheelchairs and no accessibilities for those with hearing impairments.”

Put safety at the top of your holiday list BY K. MICHELLE MORAN

t’s easy to forget about safety when dealing with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. But experts say this is a bad time to let your guard down, whether in regard to fire or crime at home.

Take a bite out of holiday crime

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, larcenies and robberies rise by roughly 20% each December. A 2020 report on the website Alarms.org showed that Michigan had the highest holiday crime rate among Midwestern states and ranked 31st nationwide in terms of having the most crime during this time; Florida had the highest holiday crime rate.

“It starts with keeping your doors and windows locked,” said A.J. Tononi, a sales representative for Guardian Alarm, a national provider based in Southfield. “Having a relationship with your neighbors helps.” He said outdoor lighting deters crooks, particularly at night, and motion-activated lights are also great. “The biggest and best recommendation is (to have) a home security system and cameras,” Tononi said. Public safety professionals concur. “Statistics prove alarms deter crime,” Grosse Pointe Shores Public Safety Director Kenneth Werenski said. “Activate your alarm. Make sure your cameras are working.” Werenski said leaving a light on when you’re gone also helps, as it leaves the impression that someone is home.

He said that while adding the inclusive equipment to an existing park in Troy would have been preferable, no other park was located in an area that qualified for CDBG funds. “We asked if we could add barrier-free equipment to a different park, and that wouldn’t qualify,” said Bovensiep. “Because, despite being public parks, we couldn’t point to any park being an exclusive benefit to those who needed those adjustments. The parcel that we wanted to add barrier-free equipment to qualified for extra leeway because it was in a more low-to-moderate income area. It’s the only part of Troy the city owns that is labeled as such. No other park would fit in that category.” The changes going into City Hall will be focused on the City Council chambers. While the building itself is ADA-compliant for the public, some areas, such as the council seats, are currently without adjustments. “City Hall is not out of ADA compli-

ance, so we’re not breaking the laws,” said Bovensiep. “There is a ramp into the building, there is an elevator, and so forth, so we are in compliance for attendees. However, there isn’t a ramp up to the council seats, for instance. So, if we had an elected official or board or commission member in a wheelchair, for instance, then we wouldn’t be compliant, and we want to make those adjustments.” Stewart said the renovations also would make the council chamber a more flexible space, usable for other events and purposes. “It won’t have stationary seating anymore,” she said. “We want to turn it more into a multipurpose room instead of just being able to be used for City Council meetings, or board and commission meetings. This way, it could be used for elections to house the (absentee voting) counting board instead of using the Community Center, or it could be used for training sessions.” While Troy city officials are looking into alternate means of adding more inclusive equipment into Troy’s parks, for the time being they believe the alterations to City Hall will still be a beneficial step forward for the

using them as well. … It’s more about better quality scams than new scams. The tactics are the same, but it’s all still phishing and spoofing and so forth. It’s all about scrutinizing what you’re seeing. Look at the sender address. Look at the address. If a company or group has had a leak and someone else has gotten access, they can use that breach to attack others. People need to slow down and analyze.” Those offering items at a large discount online are frequently suspect. “With the economy the way it is and inflation, people are looking for items at a good price,” said Plaggemier. “Oftentimes, you will see a deal that is too good to be true, and that’s because it’s a case of fraud.” She said fake gift cards and phony delivery notifications for online orders are also scams that are on the rise. “The other big one is gift card scams. When you buy gift cards, buy it at that retailer. If you want a Target gift card, don’t buy it at the supermarket. Buy it at Target itself,” said Plaggemier. “Fake delivery notifications are another big one, especially during the holidays. A phisher sends you a text or

email that a package will be delivered, like you would get from another internet retailer, but the link for the tracking information leads you to a malicious website. The message may indicate urgency, like you need to be home for a package to be delivered. You might click on something quickly without determining whether it’s legitimate.” She advised to always be suspicious of any site or ad online. “Looking for the https,” as opposed to http, “which generally indicates it’s legitimate,” Plaggemier said. “Look for misspellings in a website address. It might have a hyphen between the company name you’re looking for and some additional part of the URL. Hover over a link in an email to see where it will actually take you. This is more difficult on a phone, but don’t take chances. Watch for misspellings. Foreign scammers often have misspellings, but this is also the area where they’re growing more sophisticated since they are improving the quality of their scams.” She said one of the most effective means of spotting a fraudster is for people to just follow their gut. “If you get messages from someone you know, you can often tell if they don’t feel right,” said Plaggemier. “You can get a mes-

Among the departments that are contributing to the investigation is the Troy Police Department. Troy Police Capt. Josh Jones said that while most details cannot be released yet, it is a great example of departments working together on a major case. “We are working with the Oakland County Sheriff ’s Office, and neighboring jurisdictions are pooling resources to combat a sophisticated crime ring,” he said. “We can’t release anything yet, but in Troy we potentially had some homes targeted, but nothing we can tie to the homes hit in communities like Bloomfield Hills. … One of our detectives was assigned to this task force, and we shared resources.” Since September, there have been at least 30-40 home burglaries across various communities in Oakland County, according to Bouchard. “We are trying to get a handle on it,” he said. “All of us getting together starts to put

the picture on how big this is and how long it’s been going on.” Crews targeting homes in Oakland County are of Chilean origin, Bouchard said, based on recent arrests. “Transnational gangs, specifically in our area, are Chilean, primarily, coming from Chile, typically in teams of four (to) six,” he said. “Our area has been very much hammered by the very high-end burglaries, but we also have been hit, and, thankfully — with the assistance of the Violent Crime Task Force, the FBI, Auburn Hills, Troy, Bloomfield Township and a bunch of folks gathering together — we ended up catching a team that was doing the jewelry store robberies in Oakland County. They’re in my jail. They’re all from Chile.” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced three more arrests stemming from an investigation into criminal rings operating in the metro-Detroit area. The three suspects, arrested in Indiana, have been tied to eight break-ins that took place between Feb. 3 and 11 in Ada Township, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Pointe

… Our three main events each year are our Exceptional Easter event, also here at Shenandoah Country Club; our gala; and this Breakfast in Whoville event. It went really well. We surpassed all of our goals, and it’s the most we’ve ever gotten in general. … We raised at least $67,000.” The event began in 2018 as a way for members of the United Community Family Services to celebrate the holidays with their families, since most events are focused on their clients and those seeking help. However, it was expanded into a public fundraiser in 2019 after the first year was so popular. “We have craft stations going on. We have photos with Santa. We have activities

with the Grinch on the stage,” said Siva. “There’s also food, a DJ, dancing, face painting, raffles and a vendor bazaar.” At the vendor bazaar are small businesses that sell products or services to support the charity as well. The organization offers assistance for those in the metro Detroit community who are in need, with a special focus on recent immigrants and refugee families. “This organization was started by a group of women who came together to help people who came to this country and help them assimilate,” said UCFS board member Renee Yaldo. “My mom was a volunteer. When I graduated and got older, I wanted a way to get involved and give back to the community. I started volunteering, and I noticed how much we do for the less fortunate and refugees. … It’s given me a place to give

back, and now it is something I take part in with my daughters.” This help comes in a variety of ways. “We have wraparound services that support hundreds of families around metro Detroit,” explained UCFS case manager Maroa Semaan. “We offer refugee programs, a food pantry where low-income families can come for help, citizenship and job help.” “The funds raised go to all of our programs. Our food pantry is probably the biggest program right now, since we’re having more than 600 families per month coming through looking for food,” added Siva. “This is up more than 40% from last year.” Yaldo said that the UCFS team will use the funds raised at the event to make lives better for those who need a hand up. “We help in so many aspects, and we have so many programs,” she said. “We have

a huge warehouse — that we call our ‘Sharehouse’ — with new and gently used items. We never put anything in the Sharehouse that we wouldn’t take. We have a food pantry, so they can get food and bedding. We have tutoring programs, senior programs, programs for autistic and special needs children. If anyone wants to help contribute to any of those groups or if they want help themselves, our doors are always open.” She added that their goal is to aid anyone, especially those adjusting to life in the United States. “We just want to help people who are new to this country, whether they are Chaldean, Ukrainian, Afghanis; they are all part of our community, and we help them,” said Yaldo. “That’s what this is all about.” Call Staff Writer Brendan Losinski at (586) 498-1068.

Using your gut gets more and more important as the use of AI improves (what) can be used in scams.” Plaggemier said that the best advice to avoid scams is to never feel rushed to go to a site; to be critical of any email, text, online ad or social media post; and to never be afraid to call a business or institution’s main number to check the legitimacy of a claim or offer. “Instead of clicking on a link, if it doesn’t look right, go to that retailer’s site directly,” she said. “If you get a text from ‘Amazon’ with a link, just go to Amazon’s site directly in your browser. Stick with legitimate retailers you are familiar with. It’s very easy to put up a website that appears similar to a legitimate retailer. Double check spellings of URLs. If you type in a URL wrong, criminals will buy a domain that has the common typo that mimics the legitimate site.” “For the most part, you need to only use verified websites,” added Pizzorni. “Don’t invest in cryptocurrency through someone you don’t personally know. thing similar, we advise them to call the body you think you need to send money to and speak to someone you know is legitimate. The old saying that, ‘If it’s too good to be true, it probably is,’ is very much something to live by.” He also advised to be extra cautious around anyone reaching out claiming to be from law enforcement or a government agency online or over the phone. “Any time a government agency is calling you, it’s probably fake,” Pizzorni said. “They tend to communicate through the mail. If you are contacted by a police department, call that department’s main line before you give out any information or money and speak to their dispatch to ensure they actually have someone attempting to contact you.” Plaggemier’s final bit of advice was to make sure antivirus and antimalware software on any device is installed and up to date. “If you do click on something malicious, it can keep a harmful malware program from getting downloaded,” Plaggemier said. She added that, if anyone has been taken advantage of, immediately report it. “We don’t see enough people reporting scams to www.IC3.gov, which is the FBI’s internet fraud center,” said Plaggemier. “It often seems like they don’t do anything, but they are working to shut these groups down. While crime doesn’t spike in Grosse Pointe Shores over the holidays, that’s due to the nature of the city, which is small and has no commercial businesses. “My experience is, crime goes up between Nov. 1 and Jan. 1,” Werenski said of regional trends. “People are desperate this time of year. They need to keep warm. They need to feed their addictions.” Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Director John Kosanke said package theft and scams are up at this time of year. Don’t answer calls from unknown callers and independently verify calls that seem to come from legitimate sources, like a utility company or the Internal Revenue Service, as scammers use spoofing to make it appear that a call is coming from a real agency when it isn’t. “With the holidays, it brings about opportunities for criminals,” Kosanke said. “We have the porch pirates this time of year. People are taking a lot of packages.” Having packages sent to a secured post office box or a person’s workplace are a couple of ways to protect these items from being stolen. Werenski said identity theft “is huge this time of year,” so people should routinely monitor their credit reports, credit card transactions and bank accounts for unauthorized activity. With so many shopping online these days, Kosanke warned residents to not click on pop-up ads when browsing the internet, as their devices could get infected with malware or the companies might not be legitimate. Kosanke and Werenski both remind people to be aware of their surroundings, including when unloading gifts and food from their vehicles. “Crime doesn’t take that long,” Kosanke said. “Crime can take seconds.” Regular safety precautions like keeping vehicles locked, not leaving the fobs inside and taking valuables like purses and briefcases inside or putting them out of sight in the trunk are also especially vital around the holidays, as criminals know people might be more prone to neglect these steps because they’re frazzled. He was not armed when taken into custody. However, police said he did “vigorously fight with the deputies,” leading to minor injuries for one of the detectives. “I am proud of the tireless work our team put into this to ensure this dangerous individual was quickly arrested before anyone was killed,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a press release. Bouchard said detectives believe the shooting was random, since the gunman has no known connection to the victim. Detectives did recover the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting. No court dates have been scheduled yet for Taylor. Taylor had yet to retain or be assigned an attorney prior to press time. Call Staff Writer Brendan Losinski at (586) 498-1068.

Peek Inside Your Health: Full Body MRI Screenings Unveil Silent Issues Before Symptoms Arise SOUTHFIELD- Full body MRI clinics have gained national attention lately, as TV personalities publicly share their personal full body scan experiences. One actress credits the scan for saving her life after doctors dismissed her unexplained pain for months. After various tests, including a CT scan, had “unremarkable” results, the pregnant actress became her own advocate, searched out a full body MRI clinic and discovered she had pancreatic cancer. Thanks to early detection the tumor was removed successfully. As a general rule, when symptoms occur related to cancer, it usually has progressed to stage three or four. Even with annual physicals, there are limitations. Most screenings only

cover about 29% of cancers with 71% occurring outside of where doctors are able to screen. However, full body MRI scans can detect cancer in every organ from the top of the head through the genitals and can detect it very early. For a long time, full body MRI scans were available only in select areas outside of Michigan, requiring expensive flights like in Vancouver or California. However, this changed when a clinic opened in Southfield, making these scans available to Metro Detroit residents. “Our advanced MRI screening can detect cancers very early when they are as small as a pencil eraser and are more easily treatable. If cancer goes undetected, however, it can grow into stage three or stage four with difficult

treatments. We can also identify conditions such as brain, abdominal, chest, and groin aneurysms,” stated the founder of the Southfield clinic called Bionicc Body Screening. The primary focus of Bionicc Body Screening is to deliver peace of mind, offering a comprehensive and detailed imaging of the body’s internal structures. The ultimate hope is for excellent health. However, in the event that something is detected, the advanced screening aims to catch any potential issues at their earliest stages. This approach offers the best opportunity for successful treatment outcomes, should the need arise. Robert B., age 50, opted for a full body scan from Bionicc Body Screening and a very small tumor

Burglaries from page 20A

homes in our county, but we want to be clear that these suspects have been in custody for months,” Bouchard said in a statement. “These suspects — while connected to the same transnational network that has committed countless burglaries across the country — are not the criminals responsible for the rash of break-ins in southeast Michigan that have risen dramatically since September. These are completely different teams who continue to traumatize residents in our area, and I urge residents to remain vigilant.” Bouchard said those in the crime ring are believed to have entered the country in one of two ways: either illegally across the southern border or through the Visa Waiver Program. “We’d love to trace them back to where they are trained. It’s hard to find out where they are living because they use different places to stay,” he explained. “This isn’t a typical investigation. That’s why we need so many partners — state, federal and local — to share information.” This particular crime ring, he explained, targets multimillion-dollar homes in affluent neighborhoods, breaking in through glass doors or second-story windows when homes

are vacant, typically between 5 and 9 p.m. Their preferred targets are large homes that are isolated and back up to wooded areas, trails and golf courses. “A lot of people ask what neighborhoods or what communities, but it’s the target home. If you have a very high-end home — probably a multimillion-dollar home — with any kind of approach, and there are valuables inside, you are probably that kind of target that they are looking for, regardless of what community or neighborhood you’re in,” Bouchard said. “One of the burglaries was in a home where the rest of the neighborhood probably wouldn’t have fit the bill, but that one did — that’s something to be aware of.” The thieves use jamming equipment to disrupt frequencies used by wireless security systems, preventing alarms from going off as they break into a home. “They’re very methodical,” Bouchard explained. “They come in, they’re very well trained — they are all in black, with backpacks, face masks and gloves — and they utilize a jammer that shuts down wireless, so if you have a wireless alarm system, a wireless glass break, wireless contacts, it will jam those frequencies and it won’t communicate with the alarm or get an alarm system out. So if you are in a neighborhood and your wireless seems to be going down and it never has

happened before and you’re in one of these neighborhoods, it may be a good time to call your local police department.” Losses from recent break-ins measure in the millions of dollars, officials say, as money, jewelry, luxury purses, other high-value items and safes have been stolen from affected properties. “They keep getting in houses without an alarm on and getting out with hundreds of thousands or even millions — we’ve seen homes with $3 million to $4 million in cash and jewelry — that’s a big payday anywhere in the world,” Bouchard noted. Bloomfield Township Police Public Information Officer Nick Soley said the township alone has experienced roughly eight to 10 home break-ins since September. “I can say confidently that none of our homes have been occupied during these home invasions in Bloomfield Township. They are going after that high-end jewelry, cash and some of the high-end purses and designernamed stuff like that,” he said. The Bloomfield Township Police Department has been communicating with residents and homeowner associations to keep them apprised of the criminal activity. Many township residents are scared, according to Solely. “Our residents are nervous, and rightfully

so. They should feel protected in their homes,” he said. “Things are kind of changing. I don’t typically tell homeowners they need to move things to a safety deposit box, but those are the kinds of tips we are giving. If you have highend jewelry, it needs to be moved somewhere more secure, or maybe off site.” Most of the homes burglarized in the township have video surveillance, which Soley said is a big help to investigators. Police have also stepped up patrols throughout the township. “We are putting a lot of extra patrols out there, so even if you don’t see us in a marked patrol car, we are out there,” he said. As home invasions connected to this crime ring continue throughout southwest Michigan, the investigation remains ongoing. Bouchard encourages homeowners to invest in redundant alarm systems — with an emphasis on those that are hard-wired and can communicate via radio, cellular and internet — and keep an eye out for anything unusual. “Watch out for each other. Look for suspicious cars or people,” he said. “People coming through backyards and neighborhoods like that is a phone call to your local police. … We’d rather check on 100 nothings than miss the one real deal. Calling us is not a bother.” Call Staff Writer Mary Beth Almond at (586) 498-1060.

F THE O E M I R C • NEWSWORTHY OF THE WEEK INCIDENTS REPORTED TO LOCAL POLICE, AS COMPILED BY C & G REPORTERS

WEST BLOOMFIELD — A resident brought a handgun to the West Bloomfield Police Department to have it registered at 2:38 p.m. Nov. 20. The gun belonged to the ex-husband of the resident’s wife. However, the serial number on the weapon had been scratched off. The weapon was confiscated by officers and was sent to a crime lab for analysis.

Naked man arrested after threatening to kill motel employee

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies responded to a motel in the 3500 block of Marketplace Circle for a male subject walking naked on the second floor and threatening to kill staff at 4:14 a.m. Nov. 2.

Deputies spoke to the night laundry attendant, who stated she saw the man naked in the hallway on the second floor and that he said he was going to kill her. He reportedly made a gun gesture with his hand. Deputies located the subject, a 48-year-old Warren man, still naked on the second floor and took him into custody without incident. Deputies transported the subject to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and cited him for disorderly conduct.

become stuck on a large roll of construction material. Officers spoke with the driver, a 59-year-old Bloomfield Hills man, and noted he had bloodshot and glassy eyes and that there was a strong odor of intoxicants coming from his breath. He was taken into custody and submitted to a chemical breath test, with results of a 0.19% blood alcohol level. He was issued a citation for operating with a blood alcohol content of 0.17% or more.

phone was tracked and a pursuit started that led to the woman driving over deployed spike strips near 12 Mile Road, police said. The vehicle eventually hit a dead-end street and was cornered by police. The vehicle was found to be stolen out of Allen Park. The woman reportedly was arrested for assault and battery, possession of stolen property, malicious destruction of property, and fleeing or eluding police.
