Clinton Township residents ask about sidewalks, services BY DEAN VAGLIA dvaglia@candgnews.com
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Municipal money was on the minds of everyone at the Feb. 12 Clinton Township Board of Trustees meeting as trustees and residents discussed the upcoming fiscal year’s budget. Set to run from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, the hearing allowed residents to comment on the budget for the
upcoming year before it is adopted at a later meeting. Township resident Sam Buschell asked why no funds were allocated for sidewalk repair, with Public Works Director Mary Bednar confirming sidewalk repairs are done as part of road repair projects. Buschell also asked about the wood chipping line item in the sanitation fund, which is going down from $250,000 to $62,500 after the township opted to end its residential wood chipping program later this year.
“We have to give a date people can put (their wood) out by, but as you know sometimes you put it out and it takes us eight weeks to get there,” Bednar said. “We’re anticipating after that date we will be into June being able to finish the service.” Resident Dana Duggar commented about the lack of a sidewalk assessment requested for the coming fiscal year, asking why the assessment is not there and if the township is not See TRUSTEES on page 10A

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — In a sea of 1960s muscle and experienced builders, it takes a lot to stand out from the Autorama crowd. Two young builders from Clinton Township managed to break the show’s mold. Devin and Nick Paul are bringing their modified 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup truck to the show which has won the two 19-year-olds the show’s Next Gen Modifiers award. The award honors car builders between the ages of 16 and 26. “It’s really rewarding and an honor just knowing that all our hard work got known,” Devin said. “Sometimes you’ve got those nights with setbacks that push you back and get discouraging, but just knowing we got into Next Gen Modifiers and

MSP trooper with Fraser roots honored with Medal of Valor BY BRENDAN LOSINSKI blosinski@candgnews.com
FRASER — Trooper Maxwell Prince was no stranger to risk as part of his duties on the Michigan State Police Emergency Response Team, but nothing could have prepared him for getting shot seven times while defending his fellow troopers. Prince and his team were serving a warrant in the city of Detroit on March 10, 2023, when the suspect responded with hostility. “We came under heavy gunfire from the suspect,” said Prince. “Myself and one of my partners were hit. I stepped out of cover, drawing fire, which led to my being shot several times.”
Michigan State Police trooper Maxwell Prince, right, receives the Medal of Valor alongside his father, former MSP Detective Sgt. Bill Prince, after trooper Prince was wounded in the line of duty last March.
“It was his day off, on a Friday; they were serving three warrants,” added his mother, Rosalie Prince. “On the last one, it was a felon in possession of firearms. That one went south on him. They had interacted with the suspect before, they knew him, but he put himself in the bathroom. They told him to come out. My son tased him, and he went into the bathroom. My son thought he was down because of the Taser, but he was up and had a gun. He got hit seven times, and his partner got hit twice in the leg.” Prince survived his wounds and was recently honored with the Medal of Valor, the highest

The Fraser High School and Richards Middle School Be Nice Club recently received a $10,000 grant from the “Shut Out Bullying” campaign organized by the Detroit Red Wings and Planet Fitness to help promote teen mental health.
FRASER — A student group based out of Fraser High School and Richards Middle School was recently awarded a $10,000 grant to help combat bullying and promote mental health among local teenagers. The grant was given by the Detroit Red Wings and Planet Fitness Shut Out Bullying campaign. The Be Nice Club at the Fraser Schools will use it to fund and promote programs benefiting students. “The Be Nice Club is a club that originated
with four student leaders who wanted to make an impact on mental health. We started it last year,” said Stacy Kalpin, a counselor at Fraser High School. “Be Nice is actually a statewide program that originated in Kalamazoo. It stands for ‘Notice, Invite, Challenge and Empower.’ It is a suicide prevention program. It is about noticing differences in people and then encouraging you to invite yourself into a conversation with them and then getting an adult.” Fraser High School senior Adriana Barney was one of the four students who started the group. Merchant lands 11 signees in first year at LTU SOUTHFIELD — Only a month in as head coach for Lawrence Technological University football, Scott Merchant turned in an impressive recruiting class to kickstart the 2024 campaign as National Signing Day concluded on Feb. 7. “It’s been exhilarating, chaotic and exciting,” Merchant said. “Those would probably be the three words I would use. It’s exciting, but there’s no break. You have to hit the ground running. There’s lots to get done in a short period of time. Not to be cliche, but just trying to take it one day at a time, as my wife reminds me.” Previously head coach for Clinton Township’s Chippewa Valley High School, a Macomb Area Conference Red team, for 15 seasons, Merchant’s impact on not just Chippewa Valley but the MAC Red as a whole was evident from LTU’s class of 2024 signees. Holding only one MAC Red player on its current roster, Chippewa Valley 2023 graduate Aaron Mitchell, LTU signed five MAC Red players this year, two of whom played at Chippewa Valley. “I have a unique perspective from coaching in that conference for 15 years and being on the same sidelines or opposite sidelines from a lot of those players,” Merchant said. “I just always respected the programs we played in the MAC. They have great coaches, great players and great programs. Quite frankly, I don’t think they get the recognition or maybe the recruiting recognition they deserve. We were glad to jump in there and get some of the guys.” Chippewa Valley’s Anthony Wright (DL) and Cash Shaw (RB) will reunite with Merchant while Utica Eisenhower turned in two commitments of their own with Preston Crum (QB) and Brandon Kedrow (DB) joining the Blue Devils. New Baltimore Anchor Bay’s Kolyn Martell (DB) rounded out the MAC Red signees while Macomb Lutheran North’s Enrico Piccinini (WR), Novi’s Lance Gailliard Jr. (RB) and Northern Michigan transfer Anthony Merlo (OL), a Fraser High School graduate, complete the list of signees from the C & G Newspapers coverage area. Running back Daniel Steele (Grand Blanc High School), defensive back Ka’Vion Smith (Holly High School) and wide receiver Buddy Banks-Williams (Davison High School) were the remaining LTU commits.
After signing day, Sterling Heights Stevenson’s Evan Watson (LB) committed to LTU, bringing the MAC Red signee count to six. Armada High School’s Jake Morgan (DB) and Kalamazoo College transfer Jon Brunette (RB), a North Farmington High School graduate, both committed as well. Merchant has had a front row seat to Wright and Shaw’s growth over the past four seasons, and he’s said he’s excited to continue watching them develop. “What a unique opportunity for me and for them (Wright and Shaw), and it means a lot to me that they want to continue to play for me here at Lawrence Tech,” Merchant said. “I don’t know how often that happens to people where your high school coach also ends up being your college coach and you can continue that relationship. Not only with them, but with their families. It’s really special.” While Merchant had a first-hand look at Crum, it was on the opposing sideline as Crum led the Eagles to a 2-3 record against the Big Reds during Merchant’s tenure. Normally viewed as the opposition, Crum’s big-time playmaking ability was a key add for Merchant, and Crum said LTU felt like the place for him. “It was just the feeling I got,” Crum said. “It gives me ‘at home’ vibes, and I really trust coach Merchant and what he’s doing. I can’t wait to be a part of his process.” It also doesn’t hurt that he gets to continue playing with a close friend in Kedrow,

said they were inspired after seeing resources and organizations begun at other schools. “We attended the MYLead Youth Leadership Conference, and we met so many amazing people. And we were very inspired by the whole conference so that, when we came back to school, we just knew we needed to do something to spark change in our school culture,” she said. “We wanted to improve student mental health and foster positivity. We went to Ms. Kalpin, and we weren’t sure what we wanted to do, but we wanted to do something.” The Be Nice Club model was something suggested to them by one of their teachers. “Ms. (Heidi) Impellizzeri, another of our teachers, had wanted to start a Be Nice chapter at Fraser High School ,so Ms. Kalpin connected us with her,” said Barney. “She told us about the whole program, and it aligned with a lot of our ideas. We worked with the two of them to start our Be Nice chapter.” Several members of the Fraser Be Nice Club attended the Detroit Red Wings hock-
ey game on Feb. 10 to receive the check. Barney and her fellow chapter co-founders, Kaleigh Nordstrom, Alex Nichol and Noah Tonn, were among them. “I was at the game when we received the check,” Barney said. “It was amazing. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. I felt so proud of the accomplishments that we had made because this showed we had actually made an impact. It was very heartwarming.” Kalpin believes they received the grant because, in their application, they drew a clear line between bullying, mental health and the causes of teen suicide. “It was definitely surprising. We’re very excited. We think it will help grow the program and possibly help a lot of students. We were honored that they are supporting what we’re doing,” she said. “The grant was open to every educator in Michigan. It really was asking how we were addressing bullying in our schools. I made the case that bullying results from mental health concerns. Creating a culture where students have positive relationships with peers is a shift from how we traditionally deal with bullying, which more focuses on discipline.” The money will help support Fraser’s See NICE on page 9A

Be Nice chapter activities in numerous ways. “We do a community wellness night where we invite the community in and have raffles and cookies and discuss topics like mental health and suicide prevention,” said Kalpin. “We also do a Mental Health Night each year. We want to do what is called Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support. This is where we give people incentives for doing the right thing. We also hope to do a mental health first-aid training where students can be trained to recognize the signs of depression.” “I hope that we can continue to spark change,” added Barney. “With this grant money, we can continue to keep putting on events like our Winter Wellness program and perhaps start new programs that help spark discussions about mental health and suicide prevention. We can now also send more students to the MYLead conference and to the
national Be Nice Symposium.” Barney stressed how important addressing issues like mental health and teen suicide are and hopes this grant will mean their organization can make big steps to address them. “One of our initial messages is ‘you are not alone.’ Especially among my peers, no one wants to talk about their mental health or the things bugging them,” she said. “With the Be Nice Club, no matter what you are feeling or what you are going through, you can connect with your peers on a deeper level. Pushing that message out to students is important because suicide rates have risen in the past few years. With us noticing when something is off, inviting them in to have a conversation, acknowledging them and challenging the stigma of mental health and empowering yourself and others to proceed with this process can make a huge difference.” Call Staff Writer Brendan Losinski at (586) 498-1068.

paying for sidewalk upkeep. The assessment line item is a holdover from when residents would pay to have sidewalks built, though Duggar was not satisfied with the answer. “Does not our ordinance allow for the township to assess the property owner to replace defective sidewalks in front of their properties?” Duggar asked. “Why are we not doing that where they exist?” Bednar said the township will have inspectors looking at the sidewalks this year, which it was not able to do in prior years due to staff shortages. Prior investigations were done on a trip-and-fall incident basis. Cutting the chipping program will allow the department to be more flexible with its workers.

and by Township Supervisor Robert Cannon, who was not at the meeting, asking the board to approve a $300,000 budget contingency. “When the committee was started, the mission was twofold: build an inclusive playground and advise the township on how we make all of our parks more accessible, more inclusive,” said Paul Gieleghem, township treasurer and chair of the Inclusive Playground Committee. “The mission doesn’t go away. Certainly, our efforts don’t go away as well.” The $300,000 contingency will cover any funds not raised before the time equipment is purchased, allowing the project to move forward while allowing the committee to fundraise further. Trustees set a procurement plan for the project by awarding the contract to Alabama-based playground builder GameTime. An alternative plan to procure equipment by a bidding process was considered, but the interchangeability of parts between GameTime’s playscapes throughout township parks would make it possible to install inclusive equipment across the township. GameTime was first approved as the vendor for the project in 2020. Going with GameTime will allow construction of the playground to begin this year.

won was humbling.” The idea to build an S-10 came from browsing around on YouTube one night. Nick was familiar with trucks after already having an SUV and was already interested in an S-10 since its weight and size makes the trucks well situated for racing. After searching around for trucks on Facebook, one of the YouTubers they follow was selling his truck. “He was posting videos about his S-10 project and sure enough it was the same S-10 I was looking at on (Facebook) Marketplace,” Nick said. “I ended up meeting him at Autorama two years ago, started talking about it and ended up purchasing it off him about a month later, after that.” Whatever the YouTuber had started with the truck, the brothers — along with help from their father, Shawn, and a friend of his — have undone and built up their own way. The truck bed has been replaced with the lift gate removed and an original S-10 front end has been installed, along with new wheels, a new hood and a matte black paint job. But where things really pop is what is under the hood: a General Motors LS-based small-block V8. Devin estimates the engine can make about 500 horsepower, though the brothers have scaled their engine to take E85 fuel from the gas pump. “I’ve never run a small-block Chevy on E85, but I’ve always heard good things about it,” Devin said. “I wanted to try something a little bit different, a little bit ‘new school’ yet still ‘old school’ with the carburetor and all that. I’m hoping to get it on a dyno soon but there should be 500 horsepower in that little truck.” It may be hard to imagine the brothers

trying to sort out who gets to drive the truck around, but Nick says there’s no conflict about it. “Usually if we go to a car show, whoever drove there, the other brother gets to drive it back,” Nick said. “That’s how we usually do it, or rock-paper-scissors. We never fight over driving it.” Devin and Nick’s history with cars goes back to their father. Shawn runs a custom interior shop in Clinton Township while also working with Devin and Nick on various projects including the S-10 and snowmobiles modified for asphalt drag racing. “They’ve helped me since I opened the shop, working on pretty much every make and model of car,” Shawn said. “It’s been great being able to do it as a family together and once they got their own license, to be able to do their own stuff.” Shawn has a hard time imagining Nick and Devin putting their wrenches down anytime soon. “These two really (are) just nonstop, really into vehicles,” Shawn said. “They’re already looking at this being their own business. I foresee them just continuing in the trade field of car interiors, hot rod interiors (and) custom seating. I’m starting to learn from them. They’re amazing.” While the brothers may have a shop of their own in the far future, right now they have a truck to work on and enjoy. “Right now, I mainly just want a cruiser with a big motor in it,” Devin said. “Drive it to Woodward, drive it to different car shows and all that. I eventually want to race it, but right now I don’t have time to race it. I take it to the track every once in a while, but right now it’s just a fun street car to drive around to the shows.” Autorama runs at Huntington Place in Detroit from March 1-3.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Clinton Township Chippewa Valley football will have a new man leading the sidelines this season, and they didn’t have to travel too far to find him. Following longtime head coach Scott Merchant’s announcement to become the front man for Lawrence Technological University, the Big Reds will turn to assistant coach Terry Wilson to lead the defending coMacomb Area Conference Red champions. “Ultimately, it was really made due to Terry’s relationship with the students,” Chippewa Valley athletic director Adam Schihl said. “He’s done a phenomenal job as the assistant coach; he’s done a phenomenal job as the head coach for track, which we hope he continues to work as. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was definitely warranted that he gets the job.” Wilson, a history teacher at Chippewa Valley, wears many hats in the school, holding the assistant coach position since 2000 while being the head coach of the boys and girls track and field team since 2012. He’s a coach the players rally around and will give everything they got each night, and it didn’t take long for the team to show their excitement about Wilson’s promotion. “As the kids like to say, they got me in my feelings,” Wilson said. “I told them after one of our lifting sessions, and they cheered like they just won the Super Bowl. That made me feel good. I know we’re going to be on the same page.” A Clinton Township Clintondale grad-
uate, Wilson played collegiate football at Bowling Green State University as a defensive back from 1988-1991 under head coach Gary Blackney. During his Chippewa Valley tenure, Wilson said he’s been able to learn from each head coach, and said he plans to utilize each of their strengths. “I learned from each guy that I coached under,” Wilson said. “Mike Carr was very community oriented. Bob Schroeder was very detailed and very organized. Scott Merchant was very intense and very organized also and understood both sides of football. I took a little bit from all three of them, and my college coach, his name is Gary Blackney, he taught us all how to mentally prepare to be successful. We worked a lot on visualization.” With still a strong supporting cast returning, the Big Reds graduated 34 seniors from a district-winning squad, suffering a regional loss to the would-be Division 1 state champions Southfield A&T last season. It will be a new-look Chippewa Valley team with a new man at the helm, but Wilson is confident his team will retool and get the job done on the field. “Losing kids like Andrew (Schuster), Anthony (Wright), Davont’a (Love), Rayshaun (Hester) and Jordan (Byers) would be extremely hard for any team to replace,” Wilson said. “Their leadership and dedication to the program over the past four years is immeasurable. They all will do great things in college and we will have to work to develop the next generation of Big Reds who will have the same impact on our program as they did.”

Michigan State Police honor for one of its members. “I am still recovering from what happened,” said Prince. “I had multiple surgeries. I will return to service sooner rather than later, hopefully, but I have no exact timeline. I am done with my surgeries, thankfully.” Prince grew up in Fraser, and his parents still reside there. He recently moved to St. Clair Shores. While he is making a successful recovery following the incident, the injuries were no small matter and the news was difficult for his family. “He was hit at least seven times — three or four went in,” said Rosalie Prince. “He had a through-and-through on the upper arm, one hit a finger, another came out of his wrist, and the last one went through his hand. The others hit him in the vest or gun belt.” Prince comes from a family rooted in law enforcement. Rosalie Prince said that, while that educated her about the risks her son took, nothing can prepare a parent for the news that their child has been wounded in the line of duty. “My husband was a Michigan State Police trooper for 31 years, and my son joined seven years ago. I have been working for the department for 28 years,” she said. “This was a lot different. I went 31 years without this happening to my husband, and he was on the same team. It happened to my son after only seven years. It was a very different and difficult experience. It’s a hor-

rible thing, and you never want to get that phone call. When it happens, you’re sort of numb all over. It happens so fast, and then it starts a long process.” The Emergency Support Team conducts highly dangerous and critical duties for the state police. This includes duties such as executive protection, serving high risk warrants, confronting barricaded armed suspects, hostage rescue and any other dangerous or critical tasks. The Medal of Valor was presented to Prince on Feb. 7. “The valor award is given out for exceptional circumstances when a trooper risks their life in performing a hazardous duty so extraordinary that the exposure to peril is above and beyond the call of duty. It is the highest award given by the state police,” Prince said. “My three fellow troopers also were honored for their bravery for the same incident. They were also given the valor award.” Prince said he was proud to receive the award and hopes that he can serve as an example of what law enforcement officers are supposed to be. He hopes to return to active service later this year. “It is humbling to say the least. I was just doing my job,” he said. “Obviously, there’s a chance that something could happen. We do it so often that you have to train to be ready. I grew up in that culture. I understood what it meant and what was expected of me since before I became a trooper. I knew what it meant to be a part of that team at that level.” Call Staff Writer Brendan Losinski at (586) 498-1068.

who Crum said he partly recruited to join him at LTU. “He’s (Kedrow) very excited,” Crum said. “Obviously, it’s his decision, but I was nudging him a little bit saying, ‘We could play together. Do you know how much fun that would be?’” In addition to their signing day class, LTU named Oscar Olejniczak, who last served as head football coach for Royal Oak Shrine Catholic High School from 20182022, as offensive coordinator, and Kyle Nystrom as defensive coordinator. Nystrom has held many collegiate coaching hats throughout his career, making stops at Central Michigan University, Texas Christian University, Ferris State University, Western Michigan University, Northern Michigan University and, most recently, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Olejniczak coached under Merchant at U of D Jesuit High School when Merchant took over the head coaching position in 1998. Both men carry an extensive coaching resume and immeasurable knowledge for the game, and Merchant said he’s excited to see what they can bring to the program. “I’ve known coach O (Olejniczak) for 25

years,” Merchant said. “He’s a great man, great father, and a great coach. He’s done an outstanding job as a high school coach, and also as an FCS offensive coordinator. His experience as a head high school coach and a college coordinator, those are huge things. He’s an outstanding offensive line coach. That’s kind of where everything starts on offense. Coach Nystrom, he’s from one of the first families of football in the state of Michigan. He’s got an amazing resume. He’s coached everywhere from Power Five schools to a bunch of years in the MAC to being a DC at Ferris State with coach (Tony) Annese to being a head coach at Northern Michigan. I feel very blessed to have been able to add those two to our staff.” The Merchant era of Blue Devils football will begin on Sept. 7 when LTU hosts MidStates Football Association Midwest League champion Saint Xavier University (Illinois). Lawrence Tech will return a healthy amount of their roster from 2023 after featuring only seven seniors on the team. The Blue Devils will look to improve on a 3-7 record in 2023 and usher in a new era of LTU football. “This whole first class will be really special for all of us on the staff,” Merchant said. “We’re trying to build a foundation of what we want to do with this group, and build on it each year.”

MOUNT CLEMENS — A Warren man has been found guilty of making a bomb threat at the 37th District Court and now faces sentencing. Lynn Morton, 73, was found guilty of making a false report or bomb threat, a four-year felony; and assaulting, resisting or obstructing officers, a two-year-felony, on Jan. 23 in Macomb County Circuit Court. According to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office in a written release, Morton refused his right to a jury trial and had a bench trial. In September 2022, Morton reportedly telephoned the 37th District Court in Warren and made a bomb threat. He was arrested on Oct. 18, 2022, and refused Warren police commands while in custody, according to prosecutors. Morton’s attorney, Vincent J. Toussaint, declined to comment at this time. Sentencing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Feb. 29 in Macomb County Circuit Court before Judge Diane Druzinski.

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police were called to an automotive supplier in the 6000 block of 18 1/2 Mile Road, between Mound Road and Van Dyke Avenue, Jan. 19 after hearing that a group of people were involved in an assault in a lunchroom. Police said two victims were treated for injuries, which reportedly included bleeding, facial swelling and ripped dreadlocks. According to police, one of the victims said his black iPhone was stolen during the incident. After looking at surveillance footage, police said one of the victims was attacked without provocation, and police added that they saw five male attackers. Workplace staff said the suspects were a hiring agency’s contract workers. Police said the suspects had already taken off along eastbound 18 1/2 Mile Road in a maroon Chevrolet Impala by the time officers got there.
Police find meth, machete
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A police officer stopped a vehicle at 4:25 p.m. Jan. 19 near 22 Mile and Schoenherr roads and found out while talking to the driver, a 52-year-old Brighton man, that his driver’s license had been revoked. Police said the man also had multiple warrants for his arrest. A 31-year-old Yale woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, told officers that there was methamphetamine hidden under the front center seat, according to police. During a search of the vehicle, police reportedly
found 24 grams of methamphetamine, prescription pills, scales and a large machete. The machete had been under the driver’s seat, police said. The officers arrested the driver and passenger, and the driver admitted that he was in the area to sell methamphetamine to a user, according to police.
Break in reported on Nine Mile
ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 3:40 a.m. on Jan. 28, a report was made about a break-in that occurred the same day in the 20000 block of Nine Mile Road. Upon arrival, an officer checked the front door to see if it was secure. Shattered glass could reportedly be seen through the windows. Further investigation showed a northeast window had been shattered and there was a piece of concrete lying inside. The officer notified dispatch and made entry. Another officer arrived and did a secondary sweep of the interior. Filing cabinets in the front showroom were open and looked to be ransacked. A keyholder was summoned to the building and shortly after a 33-year-old man showed up. He shut off the alarm and conducted a walkthrough with an officer. The man stated he doesn’t work in the used car portion and works in new car sales on the south side of Nine Mile. One person works on the north side of Nine Mile and he could not be reached. Photos were taken of the scene.
Vehicle theft attempted
GROSSE POINTE PARK — A pair of unknown suspects are being sought by police after they reportedly tried to steal a 2013 Kia Sorrento from the 1300 block of Wayburn Street at around 6:40 a.m. Jan. 28. Police said a neighbor saw the suspects inside her neighbor’s vehicle and called 911, causing the suspects to flee the scene. Police said they found damage to the Kia’s back window and steering column.
Retail fraud suspect said to be repeat offender
GROSSE POINTE CITY — A 56-year-old Detroit man was taken into custody after he allegedly put a bottle of Champagne in his pants and left a business in the 300 block of Fisher Road without paying for the Champagne at around 1:30 p.m. Feb. 3. Police said the suspect — who was arrested as he was leaving the store — was issued a citation and turned over to the Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Department, which had a valid arrest warrant for the suspect. In addition, police said that the suspect appears to be the same person who stole merchandise from the Fisher Road business Dec. 30 and Jan. 9. The suspect was expected to face additional retail fraud charges in connection to those incidents.
