HARRISON TOWNSHIP BOARD SETS BRIDGE BUDGET

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — A project years in the making is one step closer to reality as the Harrison Township Board of Trustees set the budget for building a pedestrian bridge along Jefferson Avenue over the

Clinton River Spillway.

Discussed at its Feb. 12 meeting, trustees approved a $650,000 budget in township costs with $500,000 coming from the general fund and $150,000 coming from the Downtown Development Authority’s fund.

The funds are not expected to be spent until 2025 alongside more than $2.6 million

in Transportation Alternatives Program and Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan grants. The total cost of the project is expected to be $3.5 million.

The bridge will give pedestrians a safer way to cross the spillway compared to the existing Jefferson Avenue bridge.

“The drains on that bridge are the

width of a bike tire,” said Township Clerk Adam Wit. “I’ve been going across there and saw a little girl got her tire caught, and it’s lucky there wasn’t a car coming. This is an important investment.”

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — In a sea of 1960s muscle and experienced builders, it takes a lot to stand out from the Autorama crowd.

Two young builders from Clinton Township managed to break the show’s mold.

Devin and Nick Paul are bringing their modified 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup truck to the show which has won the two 19-year-olds the show’s Next Gen Modifiers award. The award honors car builders between the ages of 16 and 26.

Clinton Township residents ask about sidewalks, services

the city’s people. While the Mount Clemens City Commission unanimously passed a resolution against the bills on Jan. 3 at the urging of Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller, it was City Commissioner Spencer Calhoun who arranged the meeting.

“At the time (of the vote), I thought we had all of the information,” Calhoun said to open the town hall. “As I talked to other folks, I learned there’s a lot to this legislation. It’s a much bigger picture, something that affects many people … and so I thought it would be appropriate to get people in the room who

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Municipal money was on the minds of everyone at the Feb. 12 Clinton Township Board of Trustees meeting as trustees and residents discussed the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.

Set to run from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, the hearing allowed residents to comment on the budget for the upcoming year before it is adopted at a later meeting.

Township resident Sam Buschell asked why no funds were allocated for sidewalk repair, with Public Works Director Mary Bednar confirming sidewalk repairs are done as part of road repair projects. Buschell also asked about the wood chipping line item in the sanitation fund, which is going down from $250,000 to $62,500 after the township opted to end its residential wood chipping program later this year.

“We have to give a date people can put (their wood) out by, but as you know sometimes you put it out and it takes us eight weeks to get there,” Bednar said. “We’re anticipating after that date we will be into June being able to finish the service.”

Resident Dana Duggar commented about the lack of a sidewalk assessment requested for the coming fiscal year, asking why the assessment is not there and if the township is not paying for sidewalk upkeep. The assessment line item is a holdover from when residents would pay to have sidewalks built, though Duggar was not satisfied with the answer.

know a lot more about this to talk about it, share with the community, hear some feedback and ask any questions that we have.”

Calhoun went on to moderate the meeting, introducing five supporters of the bills who walked through them and how they would affect residents.

The bills (SB 25, 549-554 and HB 5088-5093) would establish a statewide affordability program through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services so low-income Michiganders would only pay up to 3% of household income on water bills. The program would be open to residents earning up to 200% of the federal poverty level, divided into two tiers split at 135% of the federal poverty level. The program would be funded by a $2 monthly charge on all real water customers in the state, which could be increased to $3, and existing programs could continue with the amount paid into them subtracted from the state-level fee. Protections against water shut-offs would be included and reconnecting to water systems would be reduced from a felony to a civil infraction with commu-

nity services, with fines added on for repeat violations and felonies applied if metering or backflow devices are damaged.

The bills ultimately aim to enshrine water as a human right into Michigan law.

“What it (SB 25) says is this state would be one of the first states leading on this issue,” said Alice Jennings, an attorney specializing in human rights. “(Michigan) would have the ability to say every single agency in the state government should have a plan on how they are going to (ensure) water as a human right.”

While some speakers discussed the history of the bill, how it would affect Michiganders and how it has changed through negotiations, Christy McGillivray of the Sierra Club used her time to blame underfunded infrastructure as the primary cause of high water costs in Michigan.

“We funded the buildout of our drinking and wastewater infrastructure in the middle of the 20th century with federal dollars,” McGillivray said. “That was a massive investment to build a truly core staple of our infrastructure. … We stopped funding it.

Almost all of the funding now for our drinking and wastewater systems comes from individual ratepayers.”

McGillivray argued the program would serve as the first step in a larger plan to overhaul water infrastructure funding by lowering the cost of water.

“We’re going to wind up paying for this anyway,” McGillivray said. “Either we take this kind of giant step forward to pay a little bit to lower costs for everyone, or we are all going to be paying more. That debt isn’t going away and instead of paying for infrastructure and making sure we’re getting input to the system from everyone, all of our bills are going to go up because we’re going to be paying for bad debt.”

Once the speakers finished their remarks, the town hall took on a more participatory tone. On one side there were officials from Mount Clemens who had doubts about how effective the bills would be for city residents. “(In) systems like ours, most residents are not going to hit the usage requirements to be able to leverage this program,” said City Commissioner Erik Rick. “I am concerned that this is just subsidizing very expensive infrastructure areas with the greatest need and calling it an affordability program.

“The idea is that when you get to a point, water is a right. Nobody should have to go without water.”

Another audience member, Clair Drake, took issue with opponents of the bills framing the fee of $2 or $3 as a tax and the program as welfare.

“This is basically insurance,” Drake said. “It’s like your car insurance. … Hopefully you don’t have to use it that much, but if you do need to use it, you want to have the insurance. This is an insurance policy for our community, it’s for our state, because state problems are city problems. If we as a state have a problem with people not being able to shower every day, not being able to drink water safely from home … that’s a city problem.”

Mount Clemens City Manager Gregg Shipman spoke about some of the city’s programs to assist residents who have trouble paying their water bills. The city has shifted to monthly billing to allow residents to better track their water expenses, while radioequipped meters can be checked using a phone app. If a residence has a leak, the city will waive the sewer bills for the leak duration. The city will work with residents on payment plans to ensure bills are paid at the cost of waived fees.

… No matter where the (requirement) cutoffs are there’s going to be folks getting the short end of the stick, but right now Mount Clemens is already in a really rough spot.”

Rick’s concern was that residents would use enough water to qualify for the program while paying higher rates once the city joins the Great Lakes Water Authority. He asked that the bills target “the first gallons people are using instead of the last,” focused on subsiding water use for people in need up to a certain point.

State Rep. Denise Mentzer, D-Mount Clemens, a former city commissioner currently representing the 61st Michigan House District, provided the most vocally passionate arguments against the bills among attendees. Mentzer said she would not support the program unless communities were allowed to opt out of funding the program, funds raised by the program remain local to where they were raised and high-volume water users pay a fee higher than the $2 or $3 a month.

Audience members were more supportive of the bills. A number of those who spoke were receptive to the system as a way to provide access to safe water to all Michiganders.

work got known,” Devin said. “Sometimes you’ve got those nights with setbacks that push you back and get discouraging, but just knowing we got into Next Gen Modifiers and won was humbling.”

The idea to build an S-10 came from browsing around on YouTube one night.

Nick was familiar with trucks after already having an SUV and was already interested in an S-10 since its weight and size makes the trucks well situated for racing. After searching around for trucks on Facebook, one of the YouTubers they follow was selling his truck.

“He was posting videos about his S-10 project and sure enough it was the same S-10 I was looking at on (Facebook) Marketplace,” Nick said. “I ended up meeting him at Autorama two years ago, started talking about it and ended up purchasing it off him about a month later, after that.”

Whatever the YouTuber had started with the truck, the brothers — along with help from their father, Shawn, and a friend of his — have undone and built up their own way.

The truck bed has been replaced with the lift gate removed and an original S-10 front end has been installed, along with new wheels, a

new hood and a matte black paint job.

But where things really pop is what is under the hood: a General Motors LS-based small-block V8. Devin estimates the engine can make about 500 horsepower, though the brothers have scaled their engine to take E85 fuel from the gas pump.

“I’ve never run a small-block Chevy on E85, but I’ve always heard good things about it,” Devin said. “I wanted to try something a little bit different, a little bit ‘new school’ yet still ‘old school’ with the carburetor and all that. I’m hoping to get it on a dyno soon but there should be 500 horsepower in that little truck.”

It may be hard to imagine the brothers trying to sort out who gets to drive the truck around, but Nick says there’s no conflict about it.

“Usually if we go to a car show, whoever drove there, the other brother gets to drive it back,” Nick said. “That’s how we usually do it, or rock-paper-scissors. We never fight over driving it.”

Devin and Nick’s history with cars goes back to their father. Shawn runs a custom interior shop in Clinton Township while also working with Devin and Nick on various projects including the S-10 and snowmobiles modified for asphalt drag racing.

“They’ve helped me since I opened the

shop, working on pretty much every make and model of car,” Shawn said. “It’s been great being able to do it as a family together and once they got their own license, to be able to do their own stuff.”

Shawn has a hard time imagining Nick and Devin putting their wrenches down anytime soon.

“These two really (are) just nonstop, really into vehicles,” Shawn said. “They’re already looking at this being their own business. I foresee them just continuing in the trade field of car interiors, hot rod interiors (and) custom seating. I’m starting to learn

from them. They’re amazing.”

While the brothers may have a shop of their own in the far future, right now they have a truck to work on and enjoy.

“Right now, I mainly just want a cruiser with a big motor in it,” Devin said. “Drive it to Woodward, drive it to different car shows and all that. I eventually want to race it, but right now I don’t have time to race it. I take it to the track every once in a while, but right now it’s just a fun street car to drive around to the shows.”

COMIC CON, HISTORIC EVENTS COME TO MACOMB COLLEGE WARREN/CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Two separate events are coming to Macomb Community College, one recognizing American history and the other celebrating comic book superheroes.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — It was avant garde cinema hours at the ClintonMacomb Public Library in early February as the main branch hosted a screening of films from the Ann Arbor Film Festival.

Held on the evening of Feb. 1, audiences at the CMPL’s Clinton Township Main Library were shown six short experimental films that were part of the 61st annual festival in 2023.

“They choose the films around March and once they’re chosen by the jury, they put them into the two (touring) programs and ship the tour around the county,” said Justine Cucchi-Dietlin, digital services librarian.

The short films were made using a variety of techniques ranging from standard filmmaking to stop-motion and mixed media collages, each showcasing the experimental spirit of the festival since its inception in 1963.

METRO DETROIT — Despite differing reasons for entering the medical field, women have long played a role in the advancement of medicine.

For Dr. Tiffany Inman, her reason was her grandfather.

Whether he was picking her up from school or taking her to sporting events, Inman’s grandfather was the one who showed up for everything.

“When I was growing up, my grandfather was my favorite person in the world, and I think it was because he was a very young grandfather,” she said.

So, at the age of 7, when he stopped talking to Inman and his other grandchildren, it was heartbreaking.

“What we didn’t know at the time was that he had a congenital disorder that was eating away at his middle ear. At some point, his middle ear cavity collapsed, and part of his brain fell into his middle ear — he’s fine — but because of that, he stopped talking to all of his grandkids,” she explained.

“When you have hearing loss, some of the hardest voices to hear are children’s voices. They talk fast.

They are high-pitched. They talk about things you don’t know. They don’t look at you when they talk to you. So, he just sort of isolated. He would talk to the adults, but not us anymore, and as a child who doesn’t understand, that was just devastating.”

Once the family figured out what was going on, Inman was determined to make it easier to communicate with her beloved grandpa.

“When I found out it was because he needed hearing aids and couldn’t afford them, I made the resolution that I was going to fix this problem,” Inman said.

So she got creative.

“If I was talking to him and noticing he’s not really paying attention, he’s not really listening, I would get right up in his face and grab his cheeks and make sure he was listening. He wanted to participate, so that was a really important component.

He wasn’t checked out. He just knew he couldn’t

participate, so if I made sure he knew I wanted him to participate too, he would put in that effort. I would come face to face with him and raise my voice … and it worked. He still attended every game and everything,” she said.

Staying true to the goal she made as a child, Inman went on to pursue studying audiology and speech pathology in college. She received her doctorate in audiology from Western Michigan University in 2014, and from there she worked in various practice before opening her own private practice — Inman Audiology in Troy — in September 2020.

Last Christmas, Inman held true to her promise to herself and gifted her grandfather a pair of hearing aids.

“It felt like the smallest thing that I could do for him, because he has done so much for me in my life, so being able to do this was the easiest thing that I’ve ever done,” she said.

Inman has personally experienced tinnitus since the age of 6 or 7 and has worn hearing aids since 2014 to treat it. The way people experience tinnitus — which fills your ears with sounds no one else hears — varies.

Some hear a tone, a white noise, a buzzing, a ringing or even a whistling.

“When I have a patient that comes in the door and says that they have tinnitus, and I disclose that I do as well, it becomes so much easier for them to explain what is actually going on in their head,” she said.

A love of science drove Dr. Megan Bergeron to pursue a career in medicine.

“Growing up, science was my favorite subject, so I figured I might enjoy something in the medical field,” she said. “It was always biology of some sort that I always thought was interesting.”

It wasn’t until high school, where she took a pre-medical course that allowed the class to visit different hospitals in the area and shadow various doctors, that she really solidified her career path.

After graduating, Bergeron went on to study human biology at Michigan State University, where she joined a pre-professional club with presentations from many different doctors.

“That’s when I heard about podiatry for the first time. Before that, I didn’t even know it existed,” she said, with a chuckle. “That summer I actually went and shadowed a podiatrist … and I liked how it was focused on one area of the body, and I was like, ‘All right, I like this.’ So I started looking into podiatry schools and applying.”

cine, Bergeron returned to Michigan to complete her residency at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township last July.

Bergeron currently provides care at Hosey & Murphy Foot & Ankle Centers in Clinton Township, Sterling Heights and Mount Clemens.

Every day, she said, brings a new challenge.

“We’re focused on the foot and ankle, but within that … there are so many different things we can do. We do surgery — whether it’s an elective bunion, an amputation for an infection, broken bones or things like that — we do wound care, and there’s even simple things like ingrown toenails. It’s a variety,” she said. “There’s some very straightforward cases, there’s some very complex cases, and then, within all that, it’s a good combination of seeing patients in clinic and surgery, so it keeps things interesting.”

One of her favorite parts of the job is interacting with and helping her patients.

“It’s a really gratifying feeling knowing you’re helping people and making their day better — whether you are doing something small, like trimming their toenails, or something big, like fixing their broken ankle. No matter what you are doing, it’s helping them and making their day better. It feels good.”

Since COVID, Abhinav C. Krishnan, the associate dean for admissions and enroll-

ment management at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, said medical schools across the nation have seen an increase in female applicants.

“What is remarkable is we are actually seeing a skew of more female applicants than we are male applicants. … Prior to the pandemic, it was almost a 50/50 split, and following the pandemic, we started to see this skew toward women,” he said.

OU school of medicine is an approximate 60% female to a 40% male ratio.

Krishnan says the medical school has experienced an overall increase in women accepted into the school over the past four years, with a female to male ratio of around 58% to 60% for students in their fourth year, 69% to 47% in their third year, 77% to 47% in their second year and 74% to 50% in their first year.

“It’s this insane skew that’s been happening,” he said. “It’s been a national trend for a while now, in terms of women in medicine.

For us to find men to apply to medical school and come here, now they are a rarity.”

Bergeron encourages other women to pursue their dreams, whatever they might be.

“If you find something you love, don’t stop yourself from going for it,” she said. “If there are hurdles in your way, there are always people that are there to help you and support you.”

was to keep the fund solvent in the long run, in case other projects come up asking for DDA support.

“We probably have $300,000 in there now,” Township Supervisor Ken Verkest said. “We’ll use half, it will grow a little bit, it will grow a little bit next year, and we’ll still have a substantial six-figure amount that could be used in the future or leveraged in the event there’s a good reason to do so.”

While American Rescue Plan Act funds are not specifically being used on the bridge, the township previously moved its ARPA funds into the general fund. Verkest imagines ARPA funds are being split on the bridge and improving waterfront park, “but once you dump it into the general fund it’s all one big bucket of money.”

CDBG allocation

The township made its annual Community Development Block Grant allocation and grant application, assigning all its $17,500 to the township’s dial-a-ride program and applying for a $150,000 grant to line sewers along Marilac Street, Homeview Street and Edman Street.

CDBG allocation funds are typically used to support community nonprofits or local government programs.

“Normally we allocate (CDBG) money to our dial-a-ride, so any money we don’t allocate to dial-a-ride would have to come from the general fund to supplement it,” Wit said.

Five nonprofits requested $12,900 of the township’s CDGB funds. Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers was the only nonprofit to send someone to request funds during the CDGB public hearing on Feb. 12.

Early voting expansion

Trustees approved expanding the nine days of early in-person voting to all nonstatewide elections, beginning with the May 7 election. Wit believes having the rules on early voting change with every election would confuse voters after promoting the early voting option to residents.

Special assessment update

Trustees passed a resolution showing an intent to issue bonds to pay for the pavement replacements along Cloverleaf Street and North Blom Drive.

Passing the resolution allows the township to work with its financial advisor to determine how the township will finance the project.

“Does not our ordinance allow for the township to assess the property owner to replace defective sidewalks in front of their properties?” Duggar asked. “Why are we not doing that where they exist?”

Bednar said the township will have inspectors looking at the sidewalks this year, which it was not able to do in prior years due to staff shortages. Prior investigations were done on a trip-and-fall incident basis.

Cutting the chipping program will allow the department to be more flexible with its workers.

Inclusive Playground is a go

The Inclusive Playground Committee reached its $1.4 million financial goal at the Feb. 12 meeting with several funding boosts and the formation of a procurement plan.

Its final project funding was met through a $1 million grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and by Township Supervisor Robert Cannon, who was not at the meeting, asking the board to approve a $300,000 budget contingency.

“When the committee was started, the

mission was twofold: build an inclusive playground and advise the township on how we make all of our parks more accessible, more inclusive,” said Paul Gieleghem, township treasurer and chair of the Inclusive Playground Committee. “The mission doesn’t go away. Certainly, our efforts don’t go away as well.”

The $300,000 contingency will cover any funds not raised before the time equipment is purchased, allowing the project to move forward while allowing the committee to fundraise further.

Trustees set a procurement plan for the project by awarding the contract to Alabama-based playground builder GameTime.

An alternative plan to procure equipment by a bidding process was considered, but the interchangeability of parts between GameTime’s playscapes throughout township parks would make it possible to install inclusive equipment across the township. GameTime was first approved as the vendor for the project in 2020. Going with GameTime will allow construction of the playground to begin this year.

Cloverleaf Street and North Blom Drive Paving SAD Charter Township of Harrison

Residents of Cloverleaf Street and North Blom Drive, between Ashland Avenue and South River Road, have inquired about creating a Special Assessment District (SAD) to resurface and repair their streets. The streets are approximately 28 feet wide and include 2,600 feet of concrete pavement and 1,500 feet of asphalt pavement with no shoulders, limited shallow ditches, and minimal storm sewer. The existing concrete pavement is in poor condition with a lot of cracking and faulting evident. The existing asphalt pavement is in very poor condition with excessive deterioration and patching.

The Township has developed a combined cost estimate for the resurfacing of Cloverleaf Street and North Blom Drive per the limits described above. The estimate was developed based on the construction cost estimates prepared by the Macomb County Department of Roads and actual costs from other recent Special Assessment Districts (SADs) within Harrison Township for similar proposed paving projects. The estimated cost and a brief project description are presented below.

PROJECT SCOPE The proposed project consists of replacing select concrete panels to match the depth of and tied to the existing concrete pavement, crack sealing remaining concrete panels, and crushing and shaping the existing asphalt which will be used as base material and topped with a new four-inch-thick asphalt surface. The work would also include approach replacement as necessary to match the bottom of the driveway approaches with the new roadway surface. This project does not include any ditching or drainage improvements.

SPECIAL ASSESSMENT DISTRICT The Special Assessment will be financed on a per lot basis over 70 lots. Special Assessments are typically financed over a period of ten years with the costs divided evenly between all of the benefitting properties. This project is somewhat unique in that there are two different pavement types (asphalt and concrete) that require very different repair strategies. The asphalt section of the road requires a higher investment than does the concrete road section. To account for this difference in cost, and with a recognition that all residents in the proposed special assessment district area will benefit from the repair of the streets, it is proposed that the properties with access onto the concrete section of roadway would be assessed for one share each while the properties along the asphalt section of roadway would be assessed for two shares each. There are 47 properties with access onto the concrete roadway and 23 properties with access onto the asphalt roadway, for a total of 93 shares that will participate in the special assessment cost.

MACOMB COUNTY SUBDIVISION RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAM In previous years, the Macomb County Department of Roads had a program that provides 50% participation in the cost of reconstructing local subdivision streets, up to a maximum of $500,000. To qualify for this program, a project must be complete reconstruction including new base material, pavement, and a complete drainage system. MOUNT CLEMENS — City commissioners kept the bulk of the meeting under an hour on Feb. 5, completing its first meeting of the month without Mayor Laura Kropp at the helm.

City Commissioner and Mayor Pro Tem Laura Fournier led the meeting in Kropp’s place, starting with the approval of an amended fiscal year 2024 budget. Changes to six funds were made by the Plante Moran accounting team with special consideration given to moving American Rescue Plan Act money in the general fund from being recognized in FY 2024 back to FY 2023.

“We are required to recognize that revenue, I believe, by the end of this fiscal year, and it just made sense during the audit to recognize it last fiscal year,” said Danielle Kelley, a Plante Moran accountant. “We used the ARPA money to offset the Macomb County Sheriff police services.”

Kelley also requested a line-item increase for the accounting department be removed as it was included in error.

CDBG allocations

Commissioners approved the allocation of 2024’s Community Development Block Grant funds, keeping all of the $13,700 inhouse. The senior center will use the funds for events, social clubs and fitness and health programming. The CDBG program also allows the city to apply for two capital project grants.

Mount Clemens will seek grants of $150,000 for a new fire engine and $50,000 for a new fire hose.

CDBG funds are typically split between nonprofits in the community, but an offer from Pleasantrees President Bryan Wicker-

sham at the last meeting would see the cannabis company fill in the gaps in the CDBG funding requests.

As of Feb. 8, Pleasantrees was still interested in supporting CDBG applicants in some capacity. CDBG funding requests in Mount Clemens for 2023 were Care House for $6,000; Hearts for Homes for $5,000; Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers for $1,184; MCREST for $1,890; Motor City Mitten Mission for $4,000; and Turning Point for $3,000.

Land acquisition

After a closed session period, city commissioners approved the purchase of roughly 2 acres at 24398 Dubay Drive for $350,000.

The approximately 12-acre lot located between North River Road and Interstate 94 has an assessed value of $120,900.

The land was purchased for building a water tower and pumping station as part of the city’s ongoing water infrastructure improvements ahead of it joining the Great Lakes Water Authority. Prior plans to have a water tower and pumping station located in surrounding communities failed, leading the city to pursue the Dubay Drive property before state assistance ran out.

“It was not our first attempt,” Mount Clemens City Manager Gregg Shipman said on Feb. 8. “We looked at dozens of different options since the beginning and we’ve tried to go with the most cost-effective options first.

They turned out to be non-feasible for many reasons, and that’s how we came upon this option.”

Included in the purchase are easements rights to run water infrastructure underground. As of Feb. 8, the sale had not yet been finalized, pending the results of surveys.

Fraser Band Boosters to host 32nd annual Spring Craft Show FRASER — Anyone looking to sell their finest crafted items, purchase a variety of crafted items from among their community, or support the local music program can join the Fraser Band Boosters at their 32nd annual Spring Craft Show.

The craft show is organized by the Fraser Band Boosters and helps support the music program at Fraser High School.

“It’s an amazing production,” said Carol Agnew, the craft show chair. “You can find all kinds of things you can’t get anywhere else. It’s fun to see everyone’s creativity. I see things I would never have thought about making. Once you come once, you’ll want to come year after year.”

The craft show takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at Fraser High School, 34270 Garfield Road. Admission is $3 per person. Parking is free, but strollers are prohibited inside. Concessions will be offered, and a 50/50 raffle will take place.

“The last couple years, we’ve had more than 2,000 customers come through the door each year,” said Agnew. “We are going to have 245 booths. There are probably about 200 crafters attending. They will have all kinds of things. We don’t have direct sales; everything is somehow created by the crafter themself. We have everything from wooden

“A real key when looking at experimental film is that maybe you’re not so much going to the cineplex as you are to the art gallery,” said Leslie Raymond, executive director of the Ann Arbor Film Festival. “I encourage people to have the experience like you would experience music without words.

You don’t sit there going, ‘What is the meaning of this?’ You just kind of take it in.”

The festival operates as both an inperson and online experience, showcasing selected short and feature-length films in theaters across Ann Arbor and online. Artists such as Geroge Lucas and Andy Warhol have screened films at the festival, and the festival is a qualifying event for the Academy Awards.

The funds raised are used to further students’ musical education in a variety of ways.

“The money is raised selling the booths to the crafters, the proceeds from the concession stand and the admission fees,” said Agnew. “The money is used for the band.

The biggest thing is we pay for band camp in the summer. The band goes away for a week and this picks up the tab for the instructors and so forth. We also pay for instrument repair, purchasing new instruments, extra stuff like feeding the kids at homecoming since they don’t have time to go home. It pays for pretty much anything extra beyond what the school pays for.”

Jim Rodgers, Fraser High School’s instrumental music department head, said that the contributions to the musical education of Fraser students made possible by the band boosters is incalculable.

“It’s definitely our largest fundraiser each year. It brings in money that supports additional equipment purchases, instrument repair and maintenance,” said Rodgers. “We have some money in the budget for that but not for unplanned expenses. It also helps us in our marching band season by hiring additional staff or going to camps. It really is a major supplement to our annual budget.”

Rodgers added that they’re still looking for vendors for the sale if any local crafters wish to take part.

Arbor Film Festival sends two selections of short films on tours.

“Our festival has had a tour since its second year,” Raymond said. “I think the original impetus was wanting to get the filmmakers’ work out to be seen to places that we didn’t normally see this kind of work. It typically will travel to a couple dozen venues primarily in the United States but sometimes in Canada or Europe.”

The 61st festival’s tour visit to Clinton Township was one of its last stops before the 62nd festival, which runs in Ann Arbor from March 26-31 and online from March 26-April 7. About 3,000 films from more than 90 countries were submitted for the 62nd festival, of which 110 films will take part in the competition. HE W T F O E M I R C K• E E W E H T F O RIME C • K E E W E CRIME OF TH MOUNT CLEMENS — A Warren man has been found guilty of making a bomb threat at the 37th District Court and now faces sentencing.

Lynn Morton, 73, was found guilty of making a false report or bomb threat, a four-year felony; and assaulting, resisting or obstructing officers, a two-year-felony, on Jan. 23 in Macomb County Circuit Court. According to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office in a written release, Morton refused his right to a jury trial and had a bench trial.

In September 2022, Morton reportedly telephoned the 37th District Court in Warren and made a bomb threat. He was arrested on Oct. 18, 2022, and refused Warren police commands while in custody, according to prosecutors.

Morton’s attorney, Vincent J. Toussaint, declined to comment at this time.

Sentencing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Feb. 29 in Macomb County Circuit Court before Judge Diane Druzinski.

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police were called to an automotive supplier in the 6000 block of 18 1/2 Mile Road, between Mound Road and Van Dyke Avenue, Jan. 19 after hearing that a group of people were involved in an assault in a lunchroom.

Police said two victims were treated for injuries, which reportedly included bleeding, facial swelling and ripped dreadlocks. According to police, one of the victims said his black iPhone was stolen during the incident.

After looking at surveillance footage, police said one of the victims was attacked without provocation, and police added that they saw five male attackers.

Workplace staff said the suspects were a hiring agency’s contract workers.

Police said the suspects had already taken off along eastbound 18 1/2 Mile Road in a maroon Chevrolet Impala by the time officers got there.

Police find meth, machete

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A police officer stopped a vehicle at 4:25 p.m. Jan. 19 near 22 Mile and Schoenherr roads and found out while talking to the driver, a 52-year-old Brighton man, that his driver’s license had been revoked.

Police said the man also had multiple warrants for his arrest. A 31-year-old Yale woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, told officers that there was methamphetamine hidden under the front center seat, according to police.

During a search of the vehicle, police reportedly

found 24 grams of methamphetamine, prescription pills, scales and a large machete. The machete had been under the driver’s seat, police said. The officers arrested the driver and passenger, and the driver admitted that he was in the area to sell methamphetamine to a user, according to police.

Break in reported on Nine Mile

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 3:40 a.m. on Jan. 28, a report was made about a break-in that occurred the same day in the 20000 block of Nine Mile Road.

Upon arrival, an officer checked the front door to see if it was secure. Shattered glass could reportedly be seen through the windows. Further investigation showed a northeast window had been shattered and there was a piece of concrete lying inside. The officer notified dispatch and made entry.

Another officer arrived and did a secondary sweep of the interior. Filing cabinets in the front showroom were open and looked to be ransacked.

A keyholder was summoned to the building and shortly after a 33-year-old man showed up. He shut off the alarm and conducted a walkthrough with an officer. The man stated he doesn’t work in the used car portion and works in new car sales on the south side of Nine Mile. One person works on the north side of Nine Mile and he could not be reached.

Vehicle theft attempted

GROSSE POINTE PARK — A pair of unknown suspects are being sought by police after they reportedly tried to steal a 2013 Kia Sorrento from the 1300 block of Wayburn Street at around 6:40 a.m. Jan. 28.

Police said a neighbor saw the suspects inside her neighbor’s vehicle and called 911, causing the suspects to flee the scene. Police said they found damage to the Kia’s back window and steering column.

Retail fraud suspect said to be repeat offender

GROSSE POINTE CITY — A 56-year-old Detroit man was taken into custody after he allegedly put a bottle of Champagne in his pants and left a business in the 300 block of Fisher Road without paying for the Champagne at around 1:30 p.m. Feb. 3. Police said the suspect — who was arrested as he was leaving the store — was issued a citation and turned over to the Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Department, which had a valid arrest warrant for the suspect. In addition, police said that the suspect appears to be the same person who stole merchandise from the Fisher Road business Dec. 30 and Jan. 9.

The suspect was expected to face additional retail fraud charges in connection to those incidents.
