SOUTHFIELD — The Southfield Neighborhood Services Committee meeting Feb. 15 included a recap of some major projects in the city.

Terry Fields, Southfield’s parks and recreation director, provided updates on a long-awaited dog park at Lahser Woods Park, adding that the City Council has noted that a dog park has been an ongoing ask for 15 years now.

Fields said the dog park was initially going to be 5 acres but that requests were made to scale it down. He said it is now proposed to be 1.5 acres for small dogs and 1.5 acres for larger dogs, with a 40-car gravel parking lot, including three paved Americans with Disabilities Act parking spots.

“One of the reasons we would do a gravel parking lot is because this is our first time around with a dog park in the city of Southfield,” she said. “And so there could be potential of, ‘Oh my gosh, there’s a lot of people,’ and we’d need to redo the parking lot. So, we

did not want to put asphalt down.”

She explained that the dog park would also include a fenced-in area with a key fob system, which owners would receive after registering by submitting vaccination information and their dog license. Fields added that there would probably be some kind of training video or series on dog park conduct that owners would have to watch to obtain their key fob.

According to Fields, phase one of the dog park is scheduled to be completed this August.

That phase is set to cost around $493,000 and will consist of the 3-acre dog park, the 40-car gravel parking lot and a sidewalk into the dog park. Steve Griffith, Southfield’s park services superintendent, explained that phase two would cost roughly $531,000 and would include the expansion and paving of the parking lot to fit 70 cars, a bioswale to retain some of the water, additional lighting and new curb cuts.

Fields stated that phase two is optional.

“We would have to live with phase one and see how a 40-car parking lot worked for us,” Fields said.

Some of the funding for the dog park comes from a $100,000 grant from the Oakland County Parks and Parks Recreation Department.

Southfield City Administrator Fred Zorn touched briefly on streetlight improvements throughout the city before the topic was tabled.

“There’s been a huge amount of work done on (special assessment) districts. I will share with you there’s also deficiencies in

state statute — for example, the light bulb and SAD. The way the law actually is right now, we need to go out and reexamine these SADs, because what happens when people say ‘no’? And we’ve looked at strategies from Westland, Garden City, Taylor, what other cities have done for street lighting. Our street lighting use is very different. The west end of the city is almost nonexistent.”

According to the city’s website, an SAD “describes a method of financing public improvements by distributing the cost of a project over those property owners who will reap a direct benefit.” Projects funded by SAD typically include sanitary sewers, storm drains, water mains, road paving, dust control, sidewalk construction and street lighting. An SAD project may be initiated by a resolution by City Council or at the request of a property owner whose property would be included in the district to be assessed; it can be initiated by a petition, if enough signatures are gathered.

During the meeting, City Council member Coretta Houge discussed an April 2023 ordinance change that amended the city’s rules on rental property by changing the definitions, and registration of owners and premises sections.

“We get a lot of complaints about people having parties, because a lot of these homes weren’t registered,” she said. “And we didn’t even have the ordinance to make them register for those Airbnbs and Vrbo, so we just wanted to get control over it. And this was a way to make the homeowners more accountable as well. So, the key to that was making them register. We know that’s still a problem, but at least we have an ordinance behind it.”

SOUTHFIELD — Everett Stephenson’s love of classic hot rods goes back to his adolescence in the 1970s.

“When I was a kid, this is back in the ’70s, I was hanging out with the group, and we used to sneak in the Detroit drag strip.

We’d walk down the track and we’d lift up the fence to go watch our brothers drag race their cars down there,” he said.

Years later, he found himself buying a large luxury Lincoln from the ’70s when his coworker approached him and told him that she had a classic 1970s car, and now he’s participating in this year’s Autorama with a different vehicle.

Autorama is back for its 71st anniversary March 1-3 at Huntington Place, featuring five generations of Batmobiles and four Southfield residents — Charlotte Davidson, Dave Mckenna, Stephenson and Johnny Johnson.

It took Stephenson around five years to get his 1971 Dodge Challenger restored. It was frustrating. He went from auto shop to auto shop trying to find someone who could restore the classic vehicle until, finally, the job was complete.

“To know somebody who do what they need to do, it’s worth it to pay them. So that’s why I say, for me now, I’ll never redo a car like that again,” Stephenson said. “But I know a guy who does bodywork. I buy the parts, and he does the bodywork. It gives me something to do after my retirement.”

This is Stephenson’s fourth time participating in Autorama. He also participates in the Hot Rod Power Tour, which starts in See AUTORAMA on page 6A

Loyola student, 15, dies after Confused by Medicare or Health Insurance? shooting at Southfield hotel

SOUTHFIELD — A 15-year-old Ferndale resident died Feb. 15 following a shooting at a Southfield hotel several days earlier, police said.

At 8:42 a.m. Feb. 11, Southfield police and fire rescue personnel responded to 1500 Town Center regarding shots fired at a hotel. Officers located a teenager with an apparent gunshot wound. Lifesaving measures were initiated on the scene, and the teen was transported to the hospital. Southfield police confirmed that he passed away four days later.

The victim’s identity will not be released because he was a minor, but police revealed that he was a 10th-grade student at Loyola High School in Detroit. Loyola High School will have access to grief counseling for students impacted by the tragedy.

On Feb. 12, Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren held a press conference regarding the events that unfolded the day before.

“I’ll be very candid with you. This is very difficult to explain, and I’m not in the greatest mood because of it. Because I have to explain to the community how a group of 15-year-olds are left in a hotel room unsupervised with access to weapons. We see these things play out time and time again, and the story remains the same. Where is the parental supervision, and how do these teens get access to weapons?” Barren asked.

According to Southfield police, the preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was with two other juveniles in the hotel

room without adult supervision when he was shot. Police revealed that an adult rented the hotel room Feb. 10 for five underage teens and then left them unattended. Barren said it was one of the juveniles who called 911 after the shooting.

When police arrived on the scene, they located two juveniles at the hotel elevator on the seventh floor and detained them for questioning.

One of the suspects is a Detroit resident, also 15 years old. He was arraigned on two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, and additional charges are expected, police said. Two handguns were located in his waistband, one hidden in his groin area: a Glock 22 .40-caliber handgun with a 22-round extended magazine equipped with a laser light, which had been reported stolen in Flint in June 2022. The second weapon was unregistered.

The second suspect is a 15-year-old Southfield resident.

Southfield police revealed that upon further investigation in the hotel room, they found a .40-caliber shell casing, 20 live rounds inside a 9mm extended magazine, marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms and a scale.

“There’s no sense you can make out of a 15-year-old struggling for life,” Barren said.

“And this could have been prevented.”

“I’m just excited to be asked to join this. It’s a really prestigious honor to be a part of Autorama, to go there and show your car and be among some of the top guys out there and look at what they’re doing. I’m more excited for my buddy Johnny to be in there, because this is his first car show, and what a car show it is,” Stephenson said.

As of now, only a handful of people know about the hidden gem tucked away in Johnson’s garage. For Johnson, a family friend of the Stephensons, getting his classic 1969 Mercury Marauder has been 55 years in the making.

“That car, I bought it when I was 19 — the same car. The one I had was red with a white roof — bright red, with a white leather interior. I was in the service, and my father wouldn’t have let me take it, so the car stayed here, and I went back to the service,” he said.

Johnson explained that the car had been sold by the time he returned home.

“Last July, I told myself I’ve been through too much; I’m going to buy that car,” he said.

With the help of his niece, Johnson located a black two-door 1969 Mercury Marauder at a gallery in Tampa. Johnson’s car arrived in near-mint condition, since it had been on display except for some engine and wiring work that needed to be taken care of. He said that when the car arrived in October, he had his son park it, because he didn’t want to drive it until it was complete.

Charlotte “Goldie” Davidson isn’t into speed. She’d rather ride in style.

Davidson’s first Corvette was a 1995, and she’s been hooked ever since. She is now the proud owner of two Corvettes — a 2002 Corvette convertible in pewter and a 2017 Corvette Grand Sport convertible in sterling blue metallic that arrived just last week.

In late 2019, Davidson joined the “Vette Boyz,” a club of 30 Corvette enthusiasts started

by Jeffrey Harvey seven years ago. Davidson was the first woman to join the club, and since then, the club now has four female members.

“It’s amazing when you see women who are into cars like that. When I went to the Autorama, I saw how many women are into cars, or helping fix cars up or things like that, and with Vettes, people associate Corvettes with men. They don’t associate them with women,” Davidson said. “When I got my first Vette and pulled up at the gas station, people would say, ‘Oh, I like your car. Is that your man’s car you driving?’ And I’m like, ‘OK, so why can’t I be driving my car?’”

Her license plate reads “Hers 65” to help clear things up for those wondering who the car belongs to. She and another woman from the Vette Boyz attended an event in Bowling Green, Kentucky, called Cultural Awareness Corvette Weekend, and she was amazed to see the number of women out there who love Corvettes like she does.

Dave McKenna has a need for speed.

“Detroit and the Detroit metro area has got a long-running history with various types of racing. And I would say, a big part of that is the drag racing community. We’re lucky enough to have a few local tracks — Milan, Lapeer — all within a reasonable distance,” he said.

McKenna bought his red 1988 Ford Mustang as a bare shell around three years ago to use as a drag race car. As a professional in the automotive industry, working on cars wasn’t uncharted territory to McKenna.

“Part of me getting this car was for the learning experience,” he said. “There’s certain aspects of fabrication or engine tuning that were new to me, so I did pick up the car more to learn and broaden my knowledge based on my expertise.”

His Ford car has a General Motors engine that goes up to 170 mph. McKenna participates in events like Back to the Streets in Milan, a three- to four-day event where racers drive from racetrack to racetrack unsupported.

“Racing is sometimes challenging enough as it is, but then the additional complication of having to have the car be street legal and having to ensure that it makes it to the next track without breaking down,” he said.

Autorama will take place noon-10 p.m.

March 1, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. March 2 and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. March 3.

Leading the way WOMEN IN MEDICINE: A CAREFULLY SELECTED CAREER PATH

METRO DETROIT — Despite differing reasons for entering the medical field, women have long played a role in the advancement of medicine.

For Dr. Tiffany Inman, her reason was her grandfather.

Whether he was picking her up from school or taking her to sporting events, Inman’s grandfather was the one who showed up for everything.

“When I was growing up, my grandfather was my favorite person in the world, and I think it was because he was a very young grandfather,” she said.

So, at the age of 7, when he stopped talking to Inman and his other grandchildren, it was heartbreaking.

“What we didn’t know at the time was that he had a congenital disorder that was eating away at his middle ear. At some point, his middle ear cavity collapsed, and part of his brain fell into his middle ear — he’s fine — but because of that, he stopped talking to

all of his grandkids,” she explained. “When you have hearing loss, some of the hardest voices to hear are children’s voices. They talk fast. They are high-pitched. They talk about things you don’t know. They don’t look at you when they talk to you. So, he just sort of isolated. He would talk to the adults, but not us anymore, and as a child who doesn’t understand, that was just devastating.”

Once the family figured out what was going on, Inman was determined to make it easier to communicate with her beloved grandpa.

“When I found out it was because he needed hearing aids and couldn’t afford them, I made the resolution that I was going to fix this problem,” Inman said.

So she got creative.

“If I was talking to him and noticing he’s not really paying attention, he’s not really listening, I would get right up in his face and grab his cheeks and make sure he was listening. He wanted to participate, so that was a really important component. He wasn’t checked out. He just knew he couldn’t parSee WOMEN on page 9A

ticipate, so if I made sure he knew I wanted him to participate too, he would put in that effort. I would come face to face with him and raise my voice … and it worked. He still attended every game and everything,” she said.

Staying true to the goal she made as a child, Inman went on to pursue studying audiology and speech pathology in college. She received her doctorate in audiology from Western Michigan University in 2014, and from there she worked in various practice before opening her own private practice — Inman Audiology in Troy — in September 2020.

Last Christmas, Inman held true to her promise to herself and gifted her grandfather a pair of hearing aids.

“It felt like the smallest thing that I could do for him, because he has done so much for me in my life, so being able to do this was the easiest thing that I’ve ever done,” she said.

Inman has personally experienced tinnitus since the age of 6 or 7 and has worn hearing aids since 2014 to treat it. The way people experience tinnitus — which fills your ears with sounds no one else hears — varies.

Some hear a tone, a white noise, a buzzing, a ringing or even a whistling.

“When I have a patient that comes in the door and says that they have tinnitus, and I disclose that I do as well, it becomes so much easier for them to explain what is actually going on in their head,” she said.

A love of science drove Dr. Megan Bergeron to pursue a career in medicine.

“Growing up, science was my favorite subject, so I figured I might enjoy something in the medical field,” she said. “It was always biology of some sort that I always thought was interesting.”

It wasn’t until high school, where she took a pre-medical course that allowed the class to visit different hospitals in the area and shadow various doctors, that she really solidified her career path.

After graduating, Bergeron went on to study human biology at Michigan State University, where she joined a pre-professional club with presentations from many different doctors.

“That’s when I heard about podiatry for the first time. Before that, I didn’t even know it existed,” she said, with a chuckle. “That summer I actually went and shadowed a podiatrist … and I liked how it was focused on one area of the body, and I was like, ‘All right, I like this.’ So I started looking into podiatry schools and applying.”

After earning her doctorate from Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric

Medicine, Bergeron returned to Michigan to complete her residency at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township last July.

Bergeron currently provides care at Hosey & Murphy Foot & Ankle Centers in Clinton Township, Sterling Heights and Mount Clemens.

Every day, she said, brings a new challenge.

“We’re focused on the foot and ankle, but within that … there are so many different things we can do. We do surgery — whether it’s an elective bunion, an amputation for an infection, broken bones or things like that — we do wound care, and there’s even simple things like ingrown toenails. It’s a variety,” she said. “There’s some very straightforward cases, there’s some very complex cases, and then, within all that, it’s a good combination of seeing patients in clinic and surgery, so it keeps things interesting.”

One of her favorite parts of the job is interacting with and helping her patients.

“It’s a really gratifying feeling knowing you’re helping people and making their day better — whether you are doing something small, like trimming their toenails, or something big, like fixing their broken ankle. No matter what you are doing, it’s helping them and making their day better. It feels good.”

Since COVID, Abhinav C. Krishnan, the associate dean for admissions and enroll-

ment management at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, said medical schools across the nation have seen an increase in female applicants.

“What is remarkable is we are actually seeing a skew of more female applicants than we are male applicants. … Prior to the pandemic, it was almost a 50/50 split, and following the pandemic, we started to see this skew toward women,” he said.

OU school of medicine is an approximate 60% female to a 40% male ratio.

Krishnan says the medical school has experienced an overall increase in women accepted into the school over the past four years, with a female to male ratio of around 58% to 60% for students in their fourth year, 69% to 47% in their third year, 77% to 47% in their second year and 74% to 50% in their first year.

“It’s this insane skew that’s been happening,” he said. “It’s been a national trend for a while now, in terms of women in medicine.

For us to find men to apply to medical school and come here, now they are a rarity.”

Bergeron encourages other women to pursue their dreams, whatever they might be.

“If you find something you love, don’t stop yourself from going for it,” she said. “If there are hurdles in your way, there are always people that are there to help you and support you.”

Vintage decorating starts with an idea

METRO DETROIT — Decorating a home with vintage furniture doesn’t have to be hard — just keep in mind the budget and the chosen era.

Tim Pearl, a resident of Berkley, designed his office to have a 1930s look. He and his wife, Rebecca, bought their house four years ago, and his office was the last space they had to decorate. During the pandemic, Tim started working at home.

“My wife was like, ‘Well, you spend so much time in there, you should really make it your own,’” Pearl said.

Pearl said he has always been fascinated by the 1920s and the 1930s and watched “Peaky Blinders,” a crime drama set in those years, on Netflix.

“I just thought, ‘Well, if I’m going to do it, I’m going to go all-in and really try to make it as authentic as possible,” Pearl said.

Most of his pieces come from Facebook Marketplace. He said his desk came from an office that went virtual and his chair came from another man who was working from home. He also got his fireplace and his 1930s-style hide-a-bar cabinet from Facebook Marketplace.

He said some of the trinkets in his office are from antique stores, and he 3Dprinted his sconces.

His interest in the 1920s and 1930s came from the wide range of family members who worked in the automotive industry. His dad, his uncle, his aunt, his maternal grandfather, his wife’s dad and his wife’s grandfather all worked in the automotive industry.

“All of that automotive culture just always fascinated me,” Pearl said.

Pearl said the post-Industrial Revolution era interests him the most.

“I love the colors; I love the music,” Pearl said. “You know late, late ’20s. It just seemed there was so much hope. And it’s also very calming to me.”

Steve Humphreys, owner of Vogue Vintage in Ferndale with his wife, Lynn, sells midcentury modern decor ranging from the 1950s to the 1980s. He gets the pieces in his store from people who want to sell the items.

He said a lot of people come into the store who want to decorate their homes with vintage pieces.

“They won’t do the whole house in vintage, but they’ll put pieces in there that will stand out, and that’s the stuff we carry,” Humphreys said.

He asks for and receives pictures of the pieces once the customers place them in their homes.

“They look great here, they buy them, but once they get them isolated in their

house, (the items) tend to leave and look better,” Humphreys said. “I don’t know how that works out that way, but it does many times.”

He said those who are looking to decorate their homes with vintage items can start by researching online.

“Look at different people’s homes and try to match it in to what you have,” Humphreys said.

He also said to look through the store and see what they find.

Andy Schulist, owner of Mad 4 Mod in Livonia, said they sell vintage furniture including bedroom sets, desks and cocktail tables.

He has a wide range of customers, from those who know exactly what they’re looking for to those who have visions in their minds of what they want but don’t know much about vintage furniture. Schulist said he helps people by asking what their budget is, what they’re looking for and other questions.

Schulist said it all depends on the person’s budget when looking for vintage items.

“If they just want something really basic, maybe go out there and look for a piece that may be a little bruised, not perfect, may need reupholstering, or may need a little bit of touch-up, you know, things like that,” Schulist said, “and then start from there.”

Merchant lands 11 signees in first year at LTU SOUTHFIELD — Only a month in as head coach for Lawrence Technological University football, Scott Merchant turned in an impressive recruiting class to kickstart the 2024 campaign as National Signing Day concluded on Feb. 7.

“It’s been exhilarating, chaotic and exciting,” Merchant said. “Those would probably be the three words I would use. It’s exciting, but there’s no break. You have to hit the ground running. There’s lots to get done in a short period of time. Not to be cliche, but just trying to take it one day at a time, as my wife reminds me.”

Previously head coach for Clinton Township’s Chippewa Valley High School, a Macomb Area Conference Red team, for 15 seasons, Merchant’s impact on not just Chippewa Valley but the MAC Red as a whole was evident from LTU’s class of 2024 signees.

Holding only one MAC Red player on its current roster, Chippewa Valley 2023 graduate Aaron Mitchell, LTU signed five MAC Red players this year, two of whom played at Chippewa Valley.

“I have a unique perspective from coaching in that conference for 15 years and being on the same sidelines or opposite sidelines from a lot of those players,” Merchant

said. “I just always respected the programs we played in the MAC. They have great coaches, great players and great programs.

Quite frankly, I don’t think they get the recognition or maybe the recruiting recognition they deserve. We were glad to jump in there and get some of the guys.”

Chippewa Valley’s Anthony Wright (DL) and Cash Shaw (RB) will reunite with Merchant while Utica Eisenhower turned in two commitments of their own with Preston Crum (QB) and Brandon Kedrow (DB) joining the Blue Devils.

New Baltimore Anchor Bay’s Kolyn Martell (DB) rounded out the MAC Red signees while Macomb Lutheran North’s Enrico Piccinini (WR), Novi’s Lance Gailliard Jr. (RB) and Northern Michigan transfer Anthony Merlo (OL), a Fraser High School graduate, complete the list of signees from the C & G Newspapers coverage area. LTU hosts Michigan’s second-ever poet laureate

SOUTHFIELD — On Feb. 13, Lawrence Technological University welcomed the state’s second-ever poet laureate, Nandi Comer, for a presentation to promote literary arts.

“I’m really pleased to be able to participate in these sorts of gatherings,” said Richard Heist, the vice president for academic affairs and provost at LTU. “This university, a large technological university, is, as the name implies, a very highly technological-focused school. We’re one of a dozen or 13 schools in the United States. I’ve been privileged to actually work at two of these now, and what’s interesting, both of these institutions that I’ve had the privilege to work and serve, Embry–Riddle (Aeronautical University) being one and Lawrence Tech being the other, highly technologically focused, very motivated, very driven, with the sciences and engineering. In each of these institutions, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know, to introduce, to work with poet laureates. And I think that says a little something about the character of these institutions.”

Comer assumed the role of poet laureate in 2023 as the first person to hold that position in 64 years after, in 2021, the state Legislature passed a budget to re-establish the role.

Comer had been shocked to hear that she was one of the finalists for it.

“I was incredibly surprised. I was notified that I was one of the finalists who had been nominated by a panel of established poets and writers. And at first, when they told me I was a finalist, I thought, ‘Well, I’m glad I was nominated.’ Because I know how incredible the selection of poets that we have in the state, and I just didn’t think that I would

However, upon learning more about the position, Comer realized that her background made her well-equipped to take on the role. As poet laureate, Comer engages with students, teachers and residents across Michigan to encourage poetry, spoken word and literary arts.

“The poet laureate’s major role is to advocate for the art and practice of poetry,” she said. “And so that it can show up in multiple ways, whether it’s by doing readings, by teaching classes, by planning events, by doing things that would then encourage the participation and engagement with the art form.”

Comer is a Detroit native and graduate of Communication and Media Arts High School. She attended the University of

Michigan, where she earned two bachelor’s degrees, one in English and the other in Spanish. She often draws from her Spanish

language skills in her work, such as in her book, “Tapping Out,” which is inspired by Mexican freestyle wrestling. She has also published a book called “American Family: A Syndrome.” Her work has appeared in Callaloo — a literary journal from Johns Hopkins Literary Press — Crab Orchard Review, The Journal of Pan African Studies, the Sycamore Review and Third Coast.

Comer has held a position as writerin-residence in the Detroit Public Schools Community District and its community centers. She has also served as the director of the Allied Media Projects Seeds Program and the co-director of Detroit Lit, a program dedicated to developing reading and professional opportunities for narrative-makers of color in Detroit. She has worked as the curriculum developer and youth curriculum consultant for various arts organizations. In 2018, Comer received the William Wiggins Award for Outstanding Teaching at Indiana University.

Before Comer, the poet laureate position had been vacant since 1959, when her predecessor, Edgar A. Guest, passed away.

Merchant has had a front row seat to Wright and Shaw’s growth over the past four seasons, and he’s said he’s excited to continue watching them develop.

“What a unique opportunity for me and for them (Wright and Shaw), and it means a lot to me that they want to continue to play for me here at Lawrence Tech,” Merchant said. “I don’t know how often that happens to people where your high school coach also ends up being your college coach and you can continue that relationship. Not only with them, but with their families. It’s really special.”

While Merchant had a first-hand look at Crum, it was on the opposing sideline as Crum led the Eagles to a 2-3 record against the Big Reds during Merchant’s tenure.

According to the state’s website, Guest was born in England and immigrated to Detroit when he was 10. Guest got a job as a copy boy for the Detroit Free Press in 1895 and worked his way to the news department, where he remained for nearly 65 years. He published his first poem in December 1898.

During his lifetime, he published over 20 volumes of poetry and penned over 11,000

“It was just the feeling I got,” Crum said. “It gives me ‘at home’ vibes, and I really trust coach Merchant and what he’s doing. I can’t wait to be a part of his process.”

It also doesn’t hurt that he gets to continue playing with a close friend in Kedrow, who Crum said he partly recruited to join him at LTU. “He’s (Kedrow) very excited,” Crum said. “Obviously, it’s his decision, but I was nudging him a little bit saying, ‘We could play together. Do you know how much fun that would be?’”

In addition to their signing day class, LTU named Oscar Olejniczak, who last served as head football coach for Royal Oak Shrine Catholic High School from 20182022, as offensive coordinator, and Kyle Nystrom as defensive coordinator.

Nystrom has held many collegiate coaching hats throughout his career, making stops at Central Michigan University, Texas Christian University, Ferris State University, Western Michigan University, Northern Michigan University and, most recently, the

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Olejniczak coached under Merchant at U of D Jesuit High School when Merchant took over the head coaching position in 1998.

Both men carry an extensive coaching resume and immeasurable knowledge for the game, and Merchant said he’s excited to see what they can bring to the program.

“I’ve known coach O (Olejniczak) for 25 years,” Merchant said. “He’s a great man, great father, and a great coach. He’s done an outstanding job as a high school coach, and also as an FCS offensive coordinator. His experience as a head high school coach and a college coordinator, those are huge things.

He’s an outstanding offensive line coach.

That’s kind of where everything starts on offense. Coach Nystrom, he’s from one of the first families of football in the state of Michigan. He’s got an amazing resume. He’s coached everywhere from Power Five schools to a bunch of years in the MAC to being a DC at Ferris State with coach (Tony) Annese to being a head coach at Northern Michigan.

I feel very blessed to have been able to add

Comer’s term will end in December.

Before her term ends, she will work with a team of professional scholars and writers to nominate poets that they think should be the next poet laureate. In addition to helping select the next office holder, she will also work alongside them to mentor them to take on the position for a two-year term starting in 2025. Even though she is halfway

through her term, Comer said that there’s a lot to look forward to in 2024, such as a tour with eight stops around the state at libraries, schools and community centers; a laureate project that will also be developed; and the Poetry Out Loud recitation contest for high school age youth.

“This whole first class will be really special for all of us on the staff,” Merchant said.

“We’re trying to build a foundation of what we want to do with this group, and build on it each year.”

Bipartisan bills seek FOIA reform, increased transparency in state government

SOUTHFIELD — Michigan is one of two states where the governor’s office and lawmakers are exempt from the Freedom of Information Act. The law, established in 1976, states that people “are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and public employees, consistent with this act. The people shall be informed so that they may fully participate in the democratic process.”

Sens. Jeremy Moss, D-Southfield, and Ed McBroom, R-Vulcan, said they are striving for more.

They said they want to increase transparency in Michigan’s government with the introduction of Senate Bills 669 and 670.

Moss and McBroom have served together in the Michigan House since 2015.

They said the proposed bills aim to provide residents and journalists with improved state government transparency by allowing the public to request records from Michigan lawmakers and the governor’s office.

According to a press release by the Michigan Senate, SB 669 and 670 differ from past efforts. This new approach includes the Legislature in FOIA, instead of creating a separate open records act for the state House and Senate. The bill sponsors have reformed SBs 669 and 670 with newly added input from the office of the majority

leader and the Senate Business Office.

On Feb. 7, the Senate Oversight Committee held a meeting for Moss and McBroom to share their testimonies on the bills.

It aims to hold government officials accountable by creating an open government commission of mixed political parties and media entities to review FOIA requests regarding the state Legislature and governor’s office. The commission would investigate complaints, issue binding opinions and impose penalties.

SOUTHFIELD — A driver told police that a vehicle pulled up to him and waved a handgun out the window at 2:22 a.m. Feb. 3 near Providence Drive and Nine Mile Road.

The victim told police that he attributed the suspect’s actions as a response to his slow driving. Upon observing the gun, the victim swerved, causing his vehicle to crash.

SOUTHFIELD — At 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13, officers attempted to stop a Kia that had been reported stolen in Detroit Feb. 5 in the area of Westhampton and Evergreen Road.

The vehicle fled from the police and crashed into a fence on Evergreen, between Westhampton and Westover.

The 19-year-old driver, a Taylor resident, was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The two 17-year-old female passengers were transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the car is not tied to any crimes, and no weapons were found at the scene. The relationship between the passengers and the driver is unclear. The surviving passengers will not face any charges. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Then it resurfaced as a brain tumor, and he faced another brutal battle that resulted in a second remission. My father was a fighter, and we were blessed to have had a lot of extra moments to cherish with him, but he contracted pneumonia and passed away last summer.”

Back around the time of his cancer treatment, Dr. Ringold started hearing about companies in Canada that were performing full-body MRI screenings.

Ryan recalled that this piqued his father’s interest, and he wondered what his outcome might have been had he gotten into his own MRI machine a year earlier and discovered his cancer in the early stages when it was much more treatable.

That realization compelled Dr. Ringold to convert his MRI clinic into a place where people could get preventive full-body MRI screenings.

“Full-body MRIs screen from the top of the head to about mid-thigh,” Ryan explained. “The technology is capable of detecting tumors as small as a pea, or from 1 to 1.5 centimeters. It also detects early signs of multiple sclerosis, aneurysms, kidney stones, degenerative disc disease of the spine, liver disease — literally hundreds of different abnormalities. The hope is to detect early so that the prognosis is better.”

It is crucial, however, to understand that MRIs are an additional tool and not a replacement for routine screenings like colonoscopies and mammograms.

Even with the advancements in full-body scans, the screenings ordered annually by a patient’s physician remain irreplaceable for comprehensive health monitoring.

“People tell us they’ve been waiting for something like this and cannot believe full-body MRIs are finally available right here in Michigan,” Ryan said.

“My father was determined to make this service available to anyone who wants it. He was a very beloved man, and his spirit is definitely still with us.”

Thief allegedly steals Pokémon cards worth $10,000

BERKLEY — The Berkley Public Safety Department was called to assist in an arrest for retail fraud at 8:49 p.m. Jan. 25 at 2666 Coolidge Highway.

According to the report, officers were sent to Collectible Investments to help Clinton Township police take a first-degree retail fraud suspect into custody. The suspect, a 27-year-old Mount Clemens man, allegedly stole $10,000 worth of Pokémon cards.

Clinton Township police advised Berkley officers that the suspect had walked into a business in the township and stole a black binder containing the cards before fleeing the location. The owner of the business called other stores in the area and confirmed that the suspect was at Collectible Investments.

Dispatchers forwarded a description of the suspect while police arrived at Collectible Investments.

Officers walked in and observed the suspect sitting at a table speaking with an employee appraising the cards.

Officers identified the suspect and placed him under arrest. A search of the suspect’s person revealed the remaining stolen property contained in a blue plastic grocery bag in his right front jacket pocket.

Berkley public safety officers traveled to a 7-Eleven at 11 Mile and Dequindre roads and handed over the suspect to Clinton Township police.

Break-in at building

HAZEL PARK — According to a police report, police arrested a man after they responded to an alarm at a building in the 400 block of West Nine Mile Road around 11:50 p.m. Jan. 26.

Police reportedly found broken glass on the door outside, and inside they encountered the suspect, 39, from Detroit, who is accused of having broken into the building. An investigation was ongoing.

Vehicle hits pedestrian, flees

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — The Bloomfield Township Police Department was investigating a hitand-run injury traffic crash involving a pedestrian that occurred along southbound Eastways Road, south of East Square Lake Road, at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 30.

The suspect vehicle is believed to be a white 2021-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee with damage to the passenger side mirror. The vehicle struck a 77-year-old male resident who was near the roadway collecting his mail. The suspect vehicle left the scene without stopping.

The pedestrian was transported to Trinity Health

Oakland Hospital by Bloomfield Township Fire Department personnel. The crash was under investigation.

Vehicle stolen from resident

BIRMINGHAM — At approximately 4 a.m. Jan. 29, officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of Graefield to tell a resident there that the resident’s car was being pursued by police. The officers were unable to make contact with the resident at that time, but shortly after, the resident, a 48-year-old man, called police and reported that his car was missing.

The man stated that his car had been locked and that both keys were still in his possession.

There were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle, which was later located in Southgate. Inside the vehicle, there was approximately $4,000 worth of work equipment. An investigation was ongoing.

Customer allegedly exposes himself to UberEats driver

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies were dispatched to the 3900 block of Rochester Road for an indecent exposure complaint at 4:42 p.m. Jan. 19. An UberEats driver making a delivery from Chili’s to the Fairfield Inn went to the hotel room, and an older man answered the door. The man took the food, and then told the driver, 45, to wait as he went to get a tip.

The suspect then opened the door, revealing that he was naked from the waist down. The suspect did not say anything and acted like everything was normal.

The incident occurred on Jan. 12 and was reported Jan. 19. The hotel clerk was unable to provide the information for the person renting the room and stated the manager should be able to provide that information later. Police were investigating.

Woman allegedly flees police repeatedly, faces retail fraud, child endangerment charges

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies responded to a grocery store in the 3100 block of South Rochester Road for a retail fraud in progress at 8:59 p.m. Jan. 14. The complainant reported that a 29-year-old woman from Pontiac and two children had pushed several carts of merchandise into the parking lot and were loading the items into their vehicle.

Upon arrival, deputies saw the vehicle leaving the property and tried to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle accelerated away at a high rate of speed, and deputies initiated a pursuit, which was terminated without results.

Deputies then pursued the Cadillac westbound on M-59 to Adams Road, then onto Hamlin Road eastbound, where the pursuit was terminated. The

Cadillac continued eastbound on Hamlin. Deputies returned to the Meijer to complete their theft investigation. The merchandise recovered from the four carts totaled $3,762.20.

A deputy later saw the vehicle used in the retail fraud at a gas station in Pontiac at 10:20 p.m., initiated a traffic stop and attempted to box it in without results, then pursued it. The pursuit was terminated again.

At 3:31 a.m., deputies responded to a motel in the 2500 block of Crooks Road for a larceny complaint. They met with the complainant, who stated that the hotel had taken some of her belongings.

The deputy recognized the vehicle she was in as the vehicle wanted in the earlier retail fraud and took the 29-year-old woman into custody without incident. Her two children, who were inside the car at the time of the investigation, were turned over to a family member. Stolen merchandise was recovered. The woman was lodged in the Oakland County Jail pending the issuance of charges.

Family confronts burglar

SOUTHFIELD — Police were contacted after an unknown man broke into a home in the 26000 block of Franklin Pointe Drive at 6:49 p.m. Jan. 17. The man gained entry through the window and climbed into the home. A resident verbally confronted the suspect, who refused to leave. Family members pushed the unknown man out of the home, and the police apprehended him.

Resident accused of fighting with security officer

WEST BLOOMFIELD — On Jan. 19, West Bloomfield Police Department officers were dispatched to Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, located at 6777 W. Maple Road, for an assault and battery report involving a patient and a hospital staff member.

A male patient allegedly fought with a male hospital security officer.

The patient was left in the care of the hospital.

A report was sent to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office to review possible criminal charges.

Woman loitering in driveway arrested with loaded semi-automatic gun

OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — Deputies responded to the 2000 block of Victoria Hill in reference to a suspicious vehicle in a driveway at 2:28 p.m. Jan. 28.

The complainant stated a neighbor had informed him that a white Toyota had been parked in his driveway for 45 minutes.

Upon arrival, deputies found the vehicle with a female occupant, a 46-year-old woman from

Columbus, Ohio. She first claimed to be waiting for a real estate agent to show her an outbuilding on the property. When she was informed that there was no outbuilding, she claimed to be from a secret government agency. A loaded semi-automatic handgun was discovered on the passenger seat. Police said she had no valid permit to carry the weapon.

The woman was arrested and was lodged at the Oakland County Jail for a concealed weapons violation. The vehicle was impounded.

Arrest made after man hit on head with crowbar

OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — Deputies responded to a domestic violence incident at 4:57 a.m. Jan. 28. The complainant stated her brother and boyfriend had been in an altercation.

Upon arrival, deputies met with the complainant, who stated her brother was upstairs and was injured.

According to reports, a 40-year-old man from Oakland Township was found with “significant injuries to his head, with bleeding.” The victim stated the suspect, his sister’s boyfriend, had entered his room and hit him multiple times with a crowbar.

The victim was transported to Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital by the Oakland Township Fire Department. The suspect, a 49-year-old man from Oakland Township, was arrested and lodged at the Oakland County Jail.

Resident billed for thousands in fraudulent phone charges

FARMINGTON — A resident reportedly received a $5,390.04 bill from a collections agency regarding unpaid AT&T bills recently. The resident contacted AT&T and learned that someone had opened three phone lines in his name in metro Detroit. The resident requested the incident to be documented for informational purposes.

Champagne stolen from Holiday Market twice

ROYAL OAK — A complainant reported that at 1:15 p.m. Jan 13, an unknown person stole $582.94 worth of champagne from Holiday Market on South Main Street. On Jan. 20, another complainant reported that an unknown person stole $421.94 worth of champagne from the same location at 12:25 p.m.

ROYAL OAK — A complainant reported that at 8:15 a.m. Jan. 19, an unknown person stole more than $1,800 from the complainant’s unlocked vehicle at South Main and West Third streets.

NEW EXHIBIT OPENS

DETROIT — Wayne County Community College District’s Curtis L. Ivery Downtown Campus in Detroit invites the public to visit the exhibition, “Overcoming Hateful Things: Stories from the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Imagery.”

According to a press release, the display “explores the Jim Crow system, the African American experience during that era, and its legacy in contemporary society through hundreds of objects from the period.” The Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University in Big Rapids organized the exhibition.

“Our mission has always been to provide pathways to better lives through higher education,” WCCCD Chancellor Dr. Curtis L. Ivery said in a press release. “This exhibit offers an opportunity to see and engage in history in a way that challenges, but also builds new understanding about where we have come from, and where we are going as a community and as a nation.”

CANCER SURVIVOR WALKS DAUGHTER DOWN AISLE

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — In August 2023, the C & G Newspapers spoke with a Bloomfield Hills resident and three-time cancer survivor, Peter Grantz, ahead of his daughter’s wedding.

Grantz was the first CAR-T therapy patient at Corewell Health’s Beaumont Hospital.

“I received my first CAR-T infusion one year ago on Dec. 19. I’m cautiously optimistic that I will remain cancer-free and periodic diagnostic testing is ongoing to confirm all is well,” Grantz said last December.

In September 2023, Grantz walked his daughter down the aisle at her wedding.

“My daughter had a lot planned, and surprisingly, everything went really well. From the weather to the vendors, it proved to be a truly gorgeous day that I felt blessed to take part in. I got to give a welcome speech at the reception, and we did end up picking the NSYNC song ‘God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You’ for our father-daughter dance. Our first concert together was NSYNC, so it made the dance that much more special. All in all, it was a great day spent with family and ‘framily’ — friends that are family,” Grantz said.

Since December 2022, nine patients have received CAR-T therapy at Corewell Health in Southeast Michigan, including Grantz.

CLAWSON NATIVE SERVING ON NAVY SHIP CLAWSON — Fire Controlman 2nd Class Trey Bennington is a native of Clawson and currently works on the USS Sterett in the Philippine Sea. He is pictured lifting a messenger line during a refueling at sea. Messenger lines keep ships connected to each other while transferring supplies, according to a press release.

The ship’s motto is “forever dauntless,” according to the surfpac.navy.mil website. The crew aboard Sterett is credited for maintaining the “highest standards of professionalism” and is one of the best guided missile destroyers.

The USS Sterett is the fourth ship named after Lt. Andrew Sterett, a U.S. naval officer who fought in the Quasi-War and the Barbary Wars at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries.

The USS Sterett is currently deployed to the U.S. 7th fleet area of operations in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.
