‘NBC NIGHTLY NEWS’ TO FEATURE ROSEVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com

ast year, students and staff at Roseville Middle School made national news when teacher Stasi Earl started a program called “Be The Reason.” A group of teachers and support staff wrote letters to students to let them know
how much they inspire them every day. The teachers — some of them emotional — read their notes to the students, which was filmed and aired March 5, 2023, on “NBC Nightly News.” The letter campaign was so popular that Earl brought it back this year. EASTPOINTE — Having served as interim police chief since July, Corey Haines has now been appointed permanent police chief for the city of Eastpointe. Eastpointe City Manager Mariah Walton made the promotion Jan. 4, after the Civil Service Commission approved Haines. Haines has no shortage of experience, having previously served as both the police chief and deputy city manager of Madison Heights. He is also an attorney, admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 2019, working in the area of family law. His career in Madison Heights spanned more than three decades, beginning in 1992 when he came onboard as the city’s first K-9 handler. He also served in a variety of other positions with the Madison Heights Police Department — from Photo by Patricia O’Blenes road patrol officer and detective, to Corey Haines, now the police chief of undercover agent on the Special InEastpointe, wants to get the Police Devestigations Unit and more. partment accredited for best practices. Now he’s bringing his expertise and work ethic to the Eastpointe community. “It was a little scary starting out, coming into a department I didn’t know much about. But as I’m moving along, I’m starting to learn more about the people who work here. We have a great Police Department with a lot of great officers, and a great administrative team all throughout the city. It’s just a blessing to be here, and to work with so many great peo-

Roseville artist creates ‘mane’ attraction for Lions fans ROSEVILLE — As excitement for the Detroit Lions built to a fever pitch in the week leading up to the NFC championship game Jan. 28, artist Edward Stross, of Gonzo Art Studio in Roseville, used his talents to pay tribute to the NFL team. With his artistic abilities, Stross used snow and blue food coloring to create a lion in front of his store, located at 28305 Gratiot Ave., at Utica Road. “It’s symbolic of the fans’ optimism and their love for the Lions,” Stross said a few days before the game. “I’ve always done things for our sports teams to show my spirit.” It took him five days to create the snowy artwork. As word spread in the community about the lion defending his den, residents stopped by to snap pictures and post them on social media. Stross built the lion during freezing temperatures and kept the sculpture going for a while as temperatures warmed. In all, the lion was displayed for 11 days, Stross said. The Lions lost to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 34-31 in the NFC championship game. The Lions have never played in the Super Bowl. The Lions last won the NFL championship in 1957. The first Super Bowl was played in January of 1967. — Maria Allard

ROSEVILLE — After a self-storage company that once promised to have the bells of the former Sacred Heart church ringing pulled out of the deal, the Roseville City Council voted Jan. 23 to rezone the property from R-1 to B-3 in an attempt to make it more marketable. At the Roseville City Council’s Sept. 26,
2023, meeting, council members approved the rezoning of three properties — the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Christian Financial Credit Union and a vacant lot — to allow the properties to become indoor self-storage units, enclosed outdoor storage and retail space. However, when Roseville Storage, the developer proposing the plans, pulled out, the conditional zoning reverted back to single-family residential. Holly Fournier, associate director of com-
munications for the Archdiocese of Detroit, which owns the property, confirmed in an email that the property is back on the market. However, she did not say whether there had been interest in the property since the potential buyers backed out. “We will have more to share if it comes under contract once again,” she said. Man accused of killing teen in 2023 hit-and-run bound over to circuit court BY BRIAN WELLS
bwells@candgnews.com
ROSEVILLE — A Warren man who allegedly killed a teenager in a hit-and-run crash in Roseville last August has been bound over to circuit court. Justin Spangle, 43, was bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court Jan. 24. At approximately 4:25 a.m. Aug. 18, 2023, Spangle allegedly hit the victim, a 14-yearold boy from Warren who had autism and had been walking on the on-ramp from Groesbeck Highway to eastbound Interstate 696. The victim died from his injuries. Spangle allegedly fled the scene but was located four days later after what Michigan State Police called a “systemic search.” “A systemic search near the crash led detectives to the suspect vehicle and eventually the 43-year-old driver from Warren,” Michigan State Police said in a social media post dated Aug. 23. “Through the investigation it was determined the vehicle was uninsured and the driver suspended.” Spangle is facing charges of driving while license suspended causing death, a 15-year felony; tampering with evidence, a 10-year felony; and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death, a five-year felony. He was bound over by Roseville District Court Judge Alyia Hakim, who also granted a request to remove Spangle’s GPS tether. A GPS tether was ordered as a condition of his bond, which was posted on Aug. 29, according to court records. Spangle’s attorney, Michael Dennis, did not return a request for comment. “These alleged actions demand accountability,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a prepared statement. “Our commitment is to pursue justice for the victim’s family.” Spangle is scheduled to be arraigned in Macomb County Circuit Court at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 26 by Judge Jennifer Faunce. Roseville man facing murder charge for allegedly beating housemate to death BY BRIAN WELLS bwells@candgnews.com
ROSEVILLE — A 54-year-old Roseville man is facing a charge of murder for allegedly beating his 72-year-old housemate to death. At approximately 12:38 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, Roseville police officers were dispatched to a report of a physical altercation in progress inside a residence in the 27000 block of Waldorf Street in Roseville, according to a press release from the Roseville Police Department. Upon arrival, officers found the 72-year-old lying unresponsive on the floor of an upstairs bedroom. As officers rendered aid, other officers took the suspect, whom police and the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office have identified as Mark Newsome, into custody without incident. Newsome was arrested and held at a local hospital, where he was being treated for a preexNewsome isting medical condition, according to Roseville police. An investigation conducted by the Roseville Criminal Investigations Team revealed that the residence is a boarding-style home where people are able to rent individual bedrooms and share a common area, according to the Roseville police press release. Investigators reportedly learned that some of the residents had a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation. Playing double bass is up this cat’s alley
Lee Rocker performs Feb. 9 at Macomb Center BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Lee Rocker, of Stray Cats, is always ready to put on a show for his fans. “I’m thankful people have followed me and my music and what I do,” Rocker said. The upright bass player will “Rock This Town” when he performs a solo concert Feb. 9 at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts, located at 44575 Garfield Road on the Macomb Community College Center Campus. Show time is 7:30 p.m. Pompadours and leopard print lapels are optional. “People should come down,” Rocker said. “It’s a blast. It’s a fun show.” The rockabilly cat will slap his bass alongside bandmates Buzz Campbell on electric guitar, drummer Larry Mitchell and Phil Parlapiano on keyboards. “It’s an amazing four-piece band,” Rocker said, adding “it’s been a very long time” since he has been in metro Detroit. The idea to spotlight Rocker at the Macomb Center came from William Wood, director of Macomb’s Cultural Affairs and Community Engagement. “As a founding member of the Stray Cats I was interested in bringing him to Macomb. I remembered how awesome that group was and when I heard him play in NYC last year, it sealed the deal for me,” Wood said via email. “The musicianship
was impeccable, and the energy of the performance was off the charts. That is when I knew for certain we needed that quality of a performance for our Macomb audience.” As a solo act, the rock ‘n’ roller performs about 50 dates per year. He’s currently doing shows at performing arts centers across the country, playing his own songs plus hits from Stray Cats. Along with the music, the evening includes footage and photos that highlight Rocker’s established career. “I’ll do some storytelling and talk about the songs and life on the road for 45 years,” the musician said. “A performing arts center is the best place for it. You can put up the video screens in the old theaters. It’s kind of more intimate, which I love.” With albums that include “Atomic Boogie Hour,” “Blue Suede Nights,” “Night Train to Memphis” and “Gather Round,” Rocker doesn’t miss a beat. While playing live, the artist is known to stand on his upright bass and spin it around. Carrying the large instrument everywhere has never been a problem. “It’s not that heavy,” he said. “You’ve got to have balance.” Rocker owns about 15 stand-up basses, but just brings a few with him on tour. “Each one has different characteristics and different tones,” he said. The stage is home “bass” for Rocker, who grew up in a musical family in Long Island, New York. His dad, Stanley Drucker, was a clarinetist in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for 61 years. His mom, Naomi Drucker, was a music teacher. “That’s what I want to do,” he thought after seeing the RollSee ROCKER on page 13A

Senior citizens can find long lost yearbooks online BY MARY GENSON mgenson@candgnews.com
METRO DETROIT — Cherished memories come from receiving a yearbook on the last day of school and having friends and teachers sign it with personalized messages. Not only are they personal keepsakes of time spent in school, but they can also act as historical records for decades to come. Many local libraries and museums have taken the initiative to create online databases of their communities’ digital yearbooks.

Birmingham’s historical yearbook collection is now available online through the Birmingham Museum. Birmingham residents and history buffs can access the 19191929 issues for free. “People have been waiting to get a peek at our oldest yearbooks. They shed a light on what it was like to live in Birmingham in the early 20th century, and the world of teenagers back then,” Birmingham Museum Direc-

ple while leading the department forward,” Haines said. Comparing the police departments in Eastpointe and Madison Heights, he described both as medium-sized, similar in equipment and manpower. The Eastpointe Police Department currently has 44 sworn officers, which includes the chief, deputy chief and entire command structure. The challenges facing the department are familiar to police agencies across the country, he said. “Like a lot of departments around the U.S., we’re having issues with recruitment and retention. We’re about three officers short right now, so we’re in the hiring process,” Haines said. “We were also trying to get an officer to be the school resource officer, and it was a bit of a struggle at the beginning, but we were able to work something out with the Eastpointe Public Schools so that we can have an officer in the district. We’re also really working on our animal control officers and our animal shelter.” He said the local shelter is quite small, with only three dog kennels available to hold strays. “What we’re working towards is using a section of the (Department of Public Works) here in Eastpointe so we can expand our shelter space, working closely with the City Council to do that since we have a very large need, with so many dogs we encounter that need our care,” Haines said. Haines also wants to get the community more involved. “The department had a pretty robust neighborhood watch program prior to the time I got here, so we’re now in the process of putting that back together to see how

that will shape up,” Haines said. “I’m very much into community partnerships, getting residents involved to help curb some of the crime that has been occurring in the city.” On that note, one concerning trend has been the theft of motor vehicles, particularly those produced by Kia. “We’ve been doing our best to keep an eye on that,” he said. Haines is also spearheading an effort to get the Eastpointe Police Department accredited for best practices through the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, a comprehensive process that his team successfully navigated in Madison Heights, and that he wants to accomplish again here. “We’re starting that process now, in the hope that in a year or two we’ll be fully accredited, showing our residents that we’re using the best practices in law enforcement,” Haines said. Walton commended Haines on his new role. She said his wealth of experience from Madison Heights will make him a strong asset for Eastpointe. “During his brief time at the city (as the interim chief ), Chief Haines has served as a strong advocate of operational needs and the department’s personnel,” Walton said via email, also noting his work thus far with the Eastpointe schools and the animal shelter. “His prior budgeting experience has allowed him to accurately identify current and future departmental needs and opportunities to enhance our service to the community. We look forward to the continued growth of the Eastpointe Police Department under Chief Haines’ direction.” City officials did not reply by press time to inquiries regarding the particulars of Haines’ contract. ted for the property. He also added that he couldn’t say why Roseville Storage backed out. “I cannot speak with any certainty as to why the storage company made their decision to withdraw from the development plan,” he said in an email. The Roseville Planning Commission voted Jan. 8 to present the rezoning to the City Council. Initially, the property was zoned as R-1 residential; however, council voted to rezone it to a B-3 business district. According to a report submitted by McKenna, the city’s planning consultant, the rezoning classification is common for properties along major corridors. According to the report, the property is classified as a “retail gateway” in the future land use map within the city’s master plan. The report defines a retail gateway as “a zone that signals to the users that they are approaching downtown through mixed-use, higherdensity development that is designed for all users, (with) slightly larger parcels that (form a) downtown, (with) parking in the rear.”

ing Stones perform on “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert” as a kid in the 1970s. The teenager eventually hooked up with neighborhood pals Brian Setzer, on guitar, and drummer Slim Jim Phantom to become Stray Cats in 1979. “We’d rehearse in my parent’s garage and 200 kids would be in the driveway,” the bassist recalled. “We knew we were onto something.” With greased back hair and a retro vibe, Stray Cats were a throwback to the 1950s. In 1980, the trio moved to England and two years later released their first U.S. album, “Built for Speed.” Belting out songs like “Runaway Boys,” “She’s Sexy & 17” and “I Won’t Stand in Your Way,” their rockabilly sound struck a chord with audiences. Videos of the band rotated on MTV, and they ended up selling more than 10 million albums. The trio eventually broke up, and Setzer formed the Brian Setzer Orchestra without Rocker and Phantom. In the mid-1980s, the remaining two members recruited session guitarist Earl Slick to form the group Phantom, Rocker & Slick. When in the recording studio, they got Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards to play guitar on the single “My Mistake,” a moment Rocker will never forget. “Great guy and funny as hell,” he said of
Land uses designated for this area include bars and restaurants; clothing, apparel, food and beverage stores; art galleries; general retail and personal services; and multifamily residential units. While the zoning classification would allow for some businesses with a special land use permit, Paul Urbiel, a senior planner with McKenna, wrote that some of the businesses that would normally be allowed — businesses such as car washes, car sales, storage facilities, mortuary establishments and vehicle service stations — should not be permitted. “We do note that rezoning the parcel would enable all of the uses allowable in B-3, which raises the possibility of conflict between the Master Plan policies and eventual use of this property,” he wrote in the conclusion of the report. In an email, Monroe said the city has a moratorium on any new car washes, which was passed by City Council in 2023. He said a storage facility would have to go through the planning process and receive approval for any new buildings or alterations of existing businesses, though he didn’t expect it to happen. “I believe a storage facility at that loRichards. “Great musical instincts. It was awesome.” The band didn’t stay together, but Rocker continued performing and recording internationally. Because of his talent, he has had the thrill of working with many childhood music icons, including Carl “Blue Suede Shoes” Perkins, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton. While Rocker cites countless influences that helped shape his musical chops, Willie Dixon left the deepest impact. “He was an incredible blues guy,” Rocker said. “I loved what he did. He’s the biggest influence on my playing.” Stray Cats will “make ‘em scream and shout” again in 2024; the band is planning a summer tour to celebrate its 45 years as a band. The threesome will meow their way across 20 cities in the U.S. so get ready to prance the “Stray Cat Strut.” “It’s like it never ended,” Rocker said of the band. “It’s a lifelong thing. It’s like having brothers.” Rocker is a member of the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. In 2013, he received a lifetime achievement award from Bass Player magazine. cation is very unlikely to happen,” he said. “Two different proposals were ultimately found to be undesirable by a storage unit developer.” Monroe said rezoning the property will make it more attractive to any potential developers while also saving potential buyers from having to go through the rezoning process. “The rezoning will save whoever ends up purchasing the parcel the rezoning process,” he said in an email. “This can take several months. Expediting this portion of the redevelopment could mean the difference between a development starting this year or the next.” This wasn’t the first time Roseville Storage, a company related to MySpace Self Storage, presented plans for the property. In
2020, the company presented plans that received “broad community support” and all necessary approvals, according to the agenda packet item from the Sept. 26 meeting. However, some council members were concerned about preserving the architecture of the church. A representative of Roseville Storage did not return a request for comment. Many of the council members’ concerns were addressed when Roseville Storage presented new plans in 2023, Roseville City Attorney Tim Tomlinson said at the Sept. 26 meeting. Since being closed in 2017, the church has become the site of frequent break-ins and other forms of vandalism, Tomlinson said. Call Staff Writer Brian Wells at (248) 291-7637.

BRIEFS
Resolution honors Blue Star Mother’s Day
LANSING — On Feb. 1, the Michigan Senate passed Resolution No. 89 declaring Feb. 1, 2024, Blue Star Mother’s Day in Michigan. The resolution is not a law, but a sentimental expression. State Sen. Veronica Klinefelt, D-Eastpointe, chair of the Senate Veterans and Emergency Services Committee, along with her legislative colleagues, voted in support of the bipartisan resolution. “This day is a tribute not only to the sacrifices our service members make for the nation but also to the sacrifices of their mothers, stepmothers and grandmothers whose children have stepped forward to protect our nation,” Klinefelt said in a prepared statement. The Blue Star Mothers of America Inc. was origi-
nally founded in Michigan in 1942 following the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor in which Flint native Jack Pitcher died aboard the USS West Virginia. The organization was formally chartered by Congress in 1960 during the Vietnam War. Blue Star Mothers is a group of women who support members of the armed forces, veterans and their families. They assemble care packages to ship overseas, host events and fundraisers at home, and participate in funeral and memorial ceremonies when called upon. There is also legislation to sign Blue Star Mother’s Day into law in Michigan. Klinefelt co-sponsored the legislation. In June, the Senate passed Bill No. 235 to establish Feb. 1 as “Blue Star Mother’s Day.” It is now with the House for consideration. If it passes in the House, it will go to the governor to be signed into law or vetoed. The photo is from the Veterans and Emergency Services Committee hearing last May on the bill. Rochester Hills
The Rochester Hills Public Library has a digital collection of resources for the community to browse through. “It gives us a snapshot of the history of our community,” said Hilary Maurin, the adult services librarian at Rochester Hills Public Library. “Our community, specifically, has always been very focused on education. So, especially those older yearbooks going back to the 1920s, it is so great to see the legacy of 100 years now that’s been going on with Rochester High School.” Maurin added that the digital versions make it easier to keep copies safe. They have had some celebrities come through the school system, so digital copies keep these photos preserved. For example, Madonna is featured in one of the yearbooks from her time in Rochester Hills, but it is no longer available because someone cut her photo out of the physical edition. pecially at this time of year, many of us are reminded of the importance of family and our personal roots.” The museum’s school yearbook collection has been acquired over the last 50 years, including the first yearbook printed by Birmingham High School, in 1919. Through yearbooks, valuable information can be gathered by experts, including genealogists and local historians, as well as families conducting research of their own. “It gives a really good window into how life was back then,” Museum Assistant Justin Koch said. “One thing that I really find fascinating when I was flipping through these was 100 years ago, society was very different than it is today, but at the end of the day, teenagers are kind of the same as they were back then.” To make it easier on people looking for specific family members, the yearbook collection is searchable. Someone could type in their families name and be brought to the page where that name is listed. The museum’s collection is only missing a few issues from the early 20th century to the 1980s. Koch said he hopes that at some point they will be able to acquire the editions they are missing from the collection.

Royal Oak
The Royal Oak Public Library has a digital library of historical Kimball High School Lancer yearbooks from 1958-2006. With each vibrant cover on display, the books are easy to navigate and are full-text searchable. Yearbooks can also be downloaded for offline access. Susan Sheiner, the adult services librarian at the Royal Oak Public Library, said she has often found people looking for old classmates in these yearbooks, as well as relatives, to see what life was like when they graduated from high school. “I think it’s a way for people to connect with parts of their family history and do research on various historical moments,” Sheiner said.
Northville
Northville District Library has a large collection of yearbooks available online in a searchable format. They have historic yearbooks available for both high school and middle school. Laura Mancini, the director of the Northville District Library, said these yearbooks are a great way to see what the city and the people living in the city were like during specific moments in time. “Northville is a town that, you know, has a lot of local history to it. It’s a historic town, and people are very proud of their history and very interested in it. So we do have folks that regularly research Northville history, and we want to be a resource for them,” Mancini said. In addition to the libraries listed, there are several communities that have also offer these resources. Check your local library or historical society to find out.
