he Novi Community School District announced its recent snow day with a music video featuring students and staff, including Superintendent Ben Mainka, which has now gone viral. “It is a bit of a fun surprise when you see a video about a snow day. The staff love this as much as our students, and it is all just a light-hearted way to make the announcement,” Mainka said of his reason for doing a snow day video announcement. The song, titled “It’s a Snowday,” a parody of Taylor Swift’s
“Cruel Summer,” was written by Novi High School sophomore Ella Griffin. She is a huge Swift fan and said the lyrics just came to her after the school sent an email asking for song suggestions and submissions. “I just, like, randomly thought of it and I kept building onto it every day,” Griffin said. “It just popped into my head.” See VIDEO on page 10A

A portion of Wixom Road is closed to through traffic while a sewer is being installed under the road. Wixom Road, from Birchwoods Drive to Braeburn Lane, was shut down Feb. 5 and will remain closed for approximately four weeks. The closure is a result of the ongoing Wixom Road Sanitary Sewer Replacement and Pump Station Improvements Project, which is being done to accommodate existing flows through two pump stations on Wixom Road and to upsize the sewer between them, according to a press release. The sewer replacement part of the project is halfway completed, and it is expected to take approximately six more weeks to finish the remaining sewer installation, the release states. “There is nothing wrong with (the sewer). We are upsizing and we are maintaining it so that in future we don’t come into a problem,” said Indrani Bhattacharya, the project coordinator for Novi’s Water and Sewer Division. During the closure, traffic will be See SEWER on page 15A

nastasia Olson, of Novi, will be returning to home ice when she performs as Belle in the Disney on Ice presentation of “Magic in the Stars” at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit Feb. 15-18. “Our show, ‘Magic in the Stars,’ is really a wonderful kind of show that reaches out to everybody, not just kids and families, but I feel that there is something for everyone to see. It really is a wonderful show,” said Olson. More than 55 characters appear in “Magic in the Stars,” and the performance highlights more than a dozen Disney stories, including both classic and modern films. For the first time, the show will feature “Raya and the Last Dragon,” “Frozen II,” as well as the return of Daisy Duck, who hasn’t been seen in

the Disney on Ice shows for quite some time, Olson said. She said there are also some acrobatics and aerial aspects to the 100-minute show. “It’s a very exciting show,” Olson said. Olson, who is originally from California, started skating at the age of 6. She said she liked going to the ice arena because it offered a way to cool down. “In the heat of the California sun, I really did enjoy the ice rinks,” she said. “I just really gravitated to it.” Olson moved to Novi with her parents at age 8 to be near family and started competing primarily through the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Township. History enthusiasts throughout the Novi community were treated to lunch and conversation with Abraham Lincoln at the Novi Public Library Feb. 1 in honor of Presidents Day Feb. 19. The former president, as presented by renowned Lincoln impersonator Kevin Wood, spoke of his childhood, his family and the Civil War, with bits of humor added to the mix from time to time. The presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session, where Wood answered questions as Lincoln. Wood, who resides in Adrian, has been making presentations as Lincoln for 24 years. He said

Wildcats gear up for state tournament through grueling KLAA West BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com
When it comes to physicality, defensive prowess or just overall grit, you’ll be hardpressed to find a league that embodies those traits better than the Kensington Lakes Activities Association West. For Novi boys basketball, the KLAA West has been a never-ending nightmare the past several seasons. After reaching the Division 1 state semifinals and placing second in the league in 2018, Novi has been in the middle of the pack or below since. Even after the regular season, the Wildcats couldn’t shake their league opponents, as they’ve been continuously matched up in district play. But this year has been different for Novi, and if history has a way of repeating itself, they could be in for a state tournament run. “We knew the league is a grind regardless of what year it is or who you’re playing,” Novi coach Chris Housey said. “Every team is tough, and that’s kind of built in. I can guarantee you every year that we have 14

games where we’re going to have a grind and be prepared for the tournament. That part isn’t necessarily a concern in our preparation for March, but I want to prepare us for the league.” Novi (10-6) is currently tied for second in the West, where five teams are within one game of grabbing the runner-up spot, trailing first-place Canton by four games. If Novi stays the course, its first winning season since 2018 could be on the horizon, and it’s courtesy of a heavily veteran group. “These guys are a unique group in the sense of this being the first time we haven’t had an underclassman on the roster,” Housey said. “As a result, both our senior and junior class have been playing together since third or fourth grade. They already had that built-in camaraderie and chemistry. It’s almost like a strength-in-numbers approach.” The team bond flexes its muscles on the defensive side of the court, where every KLAA game seems to take shape. Defense isn’t a mentality for the Wildcats — it’s the only way they know how to operate on a basketball court. It isn’t just something that Housey pri-

oritizes with this group. The hard-nosed approach is almost like a tradition passed from each graduating class. This year, it’s up to seniors Boden Fernsler, Thad Lawler, Zack Knoll, Nolan Thompson, Alex Smith and Sahil Devulapalli to continue it. “Even when Thad (Lawler) and I were getting pulled up the end of our freshman year, we were kind of taught how to do it the right way by those (senior) guys,” Fernsler said. “The general rules and principles of defense have been exactly the same now. Like coach (Housey) says: even when you’re playing pickup (games), you just do it that way because it’s ingrained in your mind that that’s just how you play defense. I think that’s what we’ve always stressed for Novi basketball. We can’t play it any other way.” From the starting five to the role players, everyone buys into what Novi basketball is all about. Lawler does all the little things a coach would want a center to do, setting screens, controlling the paint and grabbing boards. Thompson is the Wildcats’ defensive spark plug off the bench alongside junior Michael Schave, who’s become an elite-level defender night in and night out. Lawler said the team’s ability to rely on

Peek Inside Your Health: Full Body MRI Screenings Unveil Silent Issues Before Symptoms Arise SOUTHFIELD- Full body MRI clinics have gained national attention lately, as TV personalities publicly share their personal full body scan experiences. One actress credits the scan for saving her life after doctors dismissed her unexplained pain for months. After various tests, including a CT scan, had “unremarkable” results, the pregnant actress became her own advocate, searched out a full body MRI clinic and discovered she had pancreatic cancer. Thanks to early detection the tumor was removed successfully. As a general rule, when symptoms occur related to cancer, it usually has progressed to stage three or four. Even with annual physicals, there are limitations. Most screenings only
cover about 29% of cancers with 71% occurring outside of where doctors are able to screen. However, full body MRI scans can detect cancer in every organ from the top of the head through the genitals and can detect it very early. For a long time, full body MRI scans were available only in select areas outside of Michigan, requiring expensive flights like in Vancouver or California. However, this changed when a clinic opened in Southfield, making these scans available to Metro Detroit residents. “Our advanced MRI screening can detect cancers very early when they are as small as a pencil eraser and are more easily treatable. If cancer goes undetected, however, it can grow into stage three or stage four with difficult
treatments. We can also identify conditions such as brain, abdominal, chest, and groin aneurysms,” stated the founder of the Southfield clinic called Bionicc Body Screening. The primary focus of Bionicc Body Screening is to deliver peace of mind, offering a comprehensive and detailed imaging of the body’s internal structures. The ultimate hope is for excellent health. However, in the event that something is detected, the advanced screening aims to catch any potential issues at their earliest stages. This approach offers the best opportunity for successful treatment outcomes, should the need arise. Robert B., age 50, opted for a full body scan from Bionicc Body Screening and a very small tumor

was detected. He said, “It saved my life. Their MRI found a kidney tumor that had been missed by a recent CT scan. I cannot recommend this service more.” Take the first step to learn more about full body scans by visiting www.BioniccBodyScreening.com and request a free, no obligation Information Kit. Request it today and you’re also guaranteed a copy of their FREE eBook, Catching Cancer Before It’s Too Late! (This is a limited time offer.) Schedule today at 1-833-BIONICC.

CRIME WATCH Woman allegedly drives while drunk and high
An officer monitoring the area near Novi Road and Grand River Avenue observed that traffic was stopped for a prolonged period of time as a result of a car stopped in the right lane at 6:41 p.m. Jan. 10. The vehicle was running, and the driver was slumped over near the door panel with her head below the steering wheel. The officer knocked on the window, and the driver knocked back, but remained slumped over. The woman, whose eyes appeared red and glossy, suddenly picked up her head and started yelling, according to the police report. When asked why she was stopped in the road, she reportedly told the officer she had just stopped and made a comment that everyone else was doing it. The woman then started throwing items in her car, according to police. She could not find her license and said that she didn’t care and that she wanted to go to jail, police said. The officer had her turn off the car and get out of the vehicle. She complied, but threw the car keys, police said. According to the report, she couldn’t carry on a conversation without getting sidetracked and was behaving very erratically. The woman was given multiple field sobriety tests, which she failed, but she denied taking any drugs or consuming alcohol, police said. However, the officer reported that she smelled of alcohol. The woman was arrested for driving under the influence and was taken to the Novi Police Department. An officer inventorying her vehicle found numerous empty alcohol bottles, as
well as several straws with white powdery residue in them, according to the police report. The woman consented to a Breathalyzer test, which showed a 0.123% blood alcohol content. The woman then told officers that she had been drinking with a friend at a Novi hotel and had smoked marijuana and eaten mushrooms before driving the vehicle, according to the report. She was later released with a citation and a court date.
Car broken into at dog park
A woman’s purse was stolen from her Jeep while she was at the Novi Dog Park, 42390 Nick Lidstrom Drive, sometime between 4 and 4:20 p.m. Jan. 7. The dog park is just south of the 10 Mile and Novi roads intersection, behind the Novi Ice Arena. According to the report, the culprit broke a window of the Jeep to obtain the Kate Spade purse, which was valued at $100. When officers arrived at the scene, the woman told them that she had parked next to a large white SUV that was backed in immediately adjacent to the handicapped spots at 4 p.m. She said that the SUV was the only other vehicle in the lot, but she believed it to be unoccupied. The woman said she saw the vehicle leave when she was at the top of the hill at the dog park at around 4:20 p.m. She said she didn’t see anyone near her vehicle or hear glass breaking, according to the report. However, when she returned to her vehicle at 4:25 p.m., her rear passenger-side window was broken and her purse was missing. She said she had left her purse on the floorboard behind the passenger seat. The
COMMUNITY BRIEFS School district to have ‘emergency virtual day’ due to primary election
The majority of the Novi Community School District will hold classes virtually Feb. 27 as a result of school buildings being used as polling sites in the Michigan primary election. Novi Early Childhood Education Center and preschool programming will be in person and will run as normal on that day. “We felt like there was no way that we would be able to hold an election during school hours and maintain our security efforts,” Superintendent Ben Mainka told parents and guardians in his monthly newsletter. Mainka said that an “emergency virtual day” differs from a snow day or an “Act of God day” in that the district
woman couldn’t detail the contents of the purse, but she said that she would cancel all her credit cards and advise police if any had been used. Police surveyed the area for a large white SUV but were unable to locate one. There are no cameras at the dog park. The case has been closed pending further information.
Texts threaten woman’s life
A woman filed a police report online with the Novi Police Department Jan. 18 after receiving a text message threatening to harm her for supposedly owing money to someone she didn’t know. She said the first message, at 2:57 p.m., came from a strange number. The message said that she owed money and that the sender was going to harm and kill her with guns and knives. She said the person then texted her correct address to prove the person knew where she lived. The woman thought this was strange because, as far as she knew, only her mother, her husband and his friend knew where she lived. Then at 5:15 p.m. she received another text, this time from a different number asking why she had blocked the first number. She didn’t receive any further messages after that, according to the report. The cadet who took the report asked the woman if she would like to have police conduct an extra patrol around the area of her home, but she reportedly declined the offer. She said that if a suspect is identified, she wants to press charges. Both of the phone numbers used were
will run school, but everything will be done online. There will still be assignments, and opportunities to meet virtually with teachers and for learning to continue. He said that more specific details would be released by the individual school buildings as the virtual day draws nearer.

License plate stolen from driveway
An officer was dispatched to a home on Montmorency Drive, near 13 Mile and Novi roads, for a report of a stolen license plate Jan. 22. Upon arrival, the officer found a black 2009 Ford Focus with no plate parked in the driveway of the residence. According to the report, all screws but the lower left license plate screw were missing, and there was no sign of rust or wear that would indicate the screws had fallen off. The officer searched the snowy area nearby but did not find the screws. The victim told police that he last saw his blue, white and green “spectacular peninsulas” Michigan license plate on the vehicle at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 and noticed it missing at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 22. During those hours the vehicle was either parked at his home or at his workplace. The man said he was concerned about someone using his plate for illegal things, and officers advised him that the plate would be entered into the Law Enforcement Information Network as stolen. Officers checked Flock Safety for the license plate, with negative results. The case was closed pending more information. — Charity Meier

Sophomore Ella Griffin wrote the lyrics to “It’s a Snowday” or “Cruel Winter,” as the kids call it. The song is a parody of Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer.” their true personality or to let people into that side of themselves, because we are so regularly judged. I believe strongly in professionalism, but I also want the students, staff and community to know me as a person and a human being.” The singers featured in the video are all seniors who participate in both the Novi Singers, an advanced classical group, as well as Major VI, a pop a capella group. “I loved the whole process because we got to practice with Mr. Mainka during the school day and we also got to go to a professional recording studio in Novi, and we also skipped a school day for that, so that was pretty cool,” said Hannah Jeong, one of the student singers featured in the video. “It was pretty fun being with a group of friends and just doing something that will be a good product and will make people happy,” said Nico Wang. Jeong said that she has watched LeTarte’s music videos online since she was a kid, and so the best part of the video for her was finally being able to participate in one of his videos. “It was pretty cool, because we were always kind of looking forward to that in high school — just being in all of the fun videos,” Jeong said. Wang and LeTarte said that they have heard a lot of positive feedback about the video from family and friends, as well as members of the community. “A lot of people thought it looked like a lot of fun, which it was,” LeTarte said. “My mom loved this video so much she, like, sent it to all my family and friends in India, here, like, everywhere. She said that it took her about three to four days to write the basic lyrics. She said there is a line in the original song that says, “It’s cool,” so she decided to take that and make it in correlation to a snow day by saying, “It’s cold.” Griffin said she probably thought of the song because it mentioned a season, but that the rewritten lyrics went really well with it. Griffin was selected from approximately 20 students who expressed interest in writing a song for the video, according to George Sipple, a public relations representative for the Novi Community School District. “I can tell you that myself, (teacher) Nick (LeTarte) and the superintendent — as soon as we saw the lyrics — like, I’m not a Taylor Swift fan, but as soon as we heard it and compared it to that song, it was like, well, this is one of the best that we had, and it just made a lot of sense, because it’s a Taylor Swift song. It’s really popular with the kids,” Sipple said. “I mean, she even wrote some of the parts that were for Ben. So it made sense. We knew that there was a lot of thought that was put into the words. So it was like an automatic for us.” Once Griffin’s song was chosen, Novi High School Choir Director Claire Schurig was asked to select the best students to sing it. In all, nearly 100 students were involved in the process of making the video. This is not Mainka’s first rodeo when it comes to performing and creating music videos. He had a viral video while he was the superintendent of Swartz Creek Community Schools. “Music has always been an important part of my life, and I am a huge proponent for our students expressing themselves through the arts. I have been singing in choirs, music groups, a cappella groups, and most commonly, loudly in the car by myself. I think having the experiences that I had in Swartz Creek certainly helped me think about doing this again, but also provide a little different spin,” Mainka said. “This time, it was all about the kids. We had students pick the song, write the lyrics and perform the singing, as well. It was really neat to see the amazingly talented students in our school family get a chance to have fun but also showcase their talents.” The video also provided members of the NCSD community a chance to see staff in a relaxed setting. Mainka is seen dancing, singing and sledding down a hill in the video. “It is unusual, because the job of a superintendent has become so scrutinized. Most people in my job are afraid to show

AgeWays is Still Your First Stop for Resources for Seniors and Family Caregivers
The Area Agency on Aging 1-B is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a new name and a new logo. The organization is now known as AgeWays Nonprofit Senior Services, or AgeWays for short. The agency chose AgeWays because it better reflects its mission: Helping older adults age in the ways they choose and giving the tools to

family caregivers to support those choices. It is also easier to remember and to pronounce. “I’m hoping our new name opens up a new level of awareness and we draw many more people to our agency looking for services and direction,” says Michael Karson, CEO and President of AgeWays. “We are looking forward to serving older adults and family caregivers with innovative programming and services for the next 50 years.” AgeWays offers person-centered resources, services, and programs ranging from respite care to homebound meals to transportation and Medicare counseling for residents in Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair and Washtenaw counties. AgeWays’ free classes and seminars support the emotional, physical, and intellectual well-being of older adults and family caregivers where they are.
AgeWays is also a reliable ally on the local, state, and federal levels. Its advocacy team works closely with elected officials and community foundations to bolster home-based services, to boost pay for home health aides, and to support family caregivers.
One of the more pressing national and local issues is the shortage of paid and unpaid caregivers. Using its expertise in helping the most vulnerable populations, AgeWays has added important new initiatives to support family caregivers: The Respite Services Voucher program provides up to $575 per year family to hire a temporary caregiver for their loved one. Trualta is an online educational platform with a treasure trove of content that covers almost every challenge that faces family caregivers.
Area Agencies on Aging were established in the federal Older Americans Act (OAA) of 1973 to help older Americans and their caregivers live quality lives with independence and dignity. AgeWays was formed a year later—in 1974—as the Area Agency on Aging 1-B. Although it now has a new name, AgeWays remains an Area Agency on Aging, drawing its funding from a combination of federal OAA and state Health and Human Services dollars. It is one of 16 in the state and 622 nationwide. It remains the largest such Area Agency on Aging in Michigan. The organization’s website address is now AgeWays.org. You can learn more about the organization’s new name at AgeWays.org/NewName. To learn more about AgeWays’ programs, call 800-852-7795, a number that remains as a trusted source of information for older adults and caregivers.

it and showed it to all her friends, and was like, ‘Look, my daughter’s singing,’” Nikhita Biju said. LeTarte said that he started doing music videos a long time ago with teachers, and then a couple of his students inquired as to why students weren’t included in the videos. As a result, he has been making videos with the students for the last six or seven years. “I thought it was a way to kind of reflect on school culture and what our school actually does and what it looks like. I felt like why, why are we letting other people tell the narrative, our story, when this is our real story?” said LeTarte, who teaches TV news and production, and broadcast communication. He also does videography projects for the district. “Music videos are fun, get everyone involved, but also kind of show what our school is.” LeTarte said the greatest challenge with the filming of the video was simply coordinating schedules, as well as the last-minute rush to have the video put together in time to announce the snow day. LeTarte said he was asked early on the morning of the video’s release to complete the final edits on the video so that a snow day for Jan. 23 could be announced at 7 p.m. Jan. 22. LeTarte said he completed and turned in the final version of the video at 6:45 p.m. Jaanvi Nuchanghla said that she wanted to participate in the video as it was a fun thing that Mainka wanted for the Novi district. After participating in the video, she and her brother did a “deep dive” on Main-

international competitor for Team USA. “I was so fortunate to grow up in Michigan and get that kind of training, because, yeah, it is a big epicenter for ice skating,” she said. Jodie Tasich, the skating director at the Detroit Skating Club, has been coaching at the club for more than 30 years and recalled watching Olson skate. “She was a beautiful skater, very balletic, just kind of dainty and pretty. She basically looked like a ballerina on the ice,” Tasich said. Tasich’s description seems fitting as Olson comes from a family of ballet dancers. Her mother and sister are ballerinas. Following her years in competitive ice dancing, Olson performed in Ice Dance In-
ka’s YouTube account and saw that he had done music videos before, including snow day videos. “He’s pretty good of a singer, and he definitely had a discography of these kinds of snow day videos. So him doing them with us was a pretty cool experience,” she said of Mainika. To film the video, the kids spent a day at a recording studio in Novi and some time outside Novi High School and at the middle school. Rithi Ramamurthy said she really enjoyed working at the studio, with an actual producer, being able to hear her own audio track and to see all the buttons and equipment used in a recording studio, as it was something she had never done before. “My favorite part (of being in the video) was, honestly, recording in the studio. I think it was just such a cool experience. I don’t think I’ll really ever get an experience like that again,” said Ramamurthy. “This was an opportunity to really showcase the abilities of our students in a fun and creative way. I think it has caused a lot of smiles and joy,” Mainka said. “My hope is that if we do more in the future, people will be proud of the talented students we have and remember that joy is an important part of the way we approach our work and lives.” The video was sent out to the 6,000 students in the district, and within a few days it had more than 20,000 views. Find it on YouTube.com under the title “It’s a Snowday - Novi Community School District.” Mainka would not confirm the possibility of future videos, but he said to “stay tuned” and, “I do love a good surprise.” Call Staff Writer Charity Meier at (586) 498-1092. ternational with her last competitive partner and then in Russian Ice Stars before joining the Disney on Ice cast in 2018. “What I love about Disney on Ice is that you never walk away from the day without feeling some kind of gratitude and happiness for what you did today for so many people, for so many kids and families,” Olson said. “It is such a fulfilling kind of feeling. It’s not that I didn’t have it when I competed, by any means, but it really puts a smile on my face to see a child so happy and loving the show so much.” Olson said that although she enjoyed competitive figure skating, she really enjoys the performance aspect of Disney. She said that there is some performing in both styles of skating, but said that in competitive skating, one is performing for scores, and it’s an entirely different mindset. “It’s just a wonderful role (performing See DISNEY on page 16A

each other has been the difference-maker this season. “Teamwork has probably been our best trait,” Lawler said. “We have a lot of unselfish guys, and sometimes that can hurt us, but a lot of times it helps us on offense and defense to help push the ball in transition.” Offensively, it’s a junior-led group headlined by guard Aaron Lauer, guard Brendan Lynch and forward Chase LeFevre, who are all averaging more than seven points per game this season. Fernsler and Knoll have also been consistent contributors in scoring for Novi. Lauer, who currently leads the team in scoring, forced his way onto the varsity scene last year after impressing Housey on the junior varsity team. The junior class made waves in a local youth league in eighth grade, catching the eye of Housey, who made it a priority to keep them together for varsity. Fernsler said it was a smooth transition meshing the playing styles of the junior and senior classes. “My brother is a junior, and he used to play basketball with a lot of these guys when they were a lot younger,” Fernsler said.
“They’re just really good at sharing the ball and being crisp on offense. Them coming in here is seamless, because they’re used to playing in different situations where they’ve lost guys to injury or to not playing basketball anymore. They’re very capable of fitting right in with us, who have been here for a while, and vice versa. I think we’re capable of fitting in with them because we’ve played some different styles with different kinds of players in the past.” With five games left and trailing Canton by four for first in the KLAA West, the Wildcats will need a miracle to catapult themselves to the top spot in the league. Regardless, Novi basketball is seeing its strongest season in the past few years, and from being battle-tested to holding a strong chemistry as lifelong friends, there’s no telling the run the Wildcats can make in the state tournament. “I feel like there is some urgency because our sophomore year was a rough year,” Fernsler said. “Last year got a little bit better, but I always felt like our senior year was going to be the most fun basketball season I had here at Novi as a varsity player. So far it has been, but I think we could be a lot better and we could compete for something.” Call Staff Writer Jonathan Szczepaniak at (586) 498-1090.

Lincoln from page 3A
that although his resemblance to Lincoln is uncanny, he is in no way related to Lincoln. The last descendent of Lincoln passed away in 1985. Wood said he decided to portray Lincoln to audiences across the country because of the 16th president’s importance to the nation and his “inspiring” personal story. He started portraying the president at his church in 2000. Initially, he said, it was just a hobby, but it evolved into a side gig, and then in 2015 he took on the Lincoln persona as a full-time career. “The more I have studied Lincoln and his times, the better I have been able to understand him and bring his persona to life,” Wood said. Wood said that what he likes the most about performing as Lincoln is “the great enjoyment it brings to other people of all ages and the opportunity to educate them while also inspiring and/or challenging them.” According to Wood, the most important thing to learn from Lincoln is how he desired to improve his own life while at the same time improving the lives of others. He said that Lincoln’s core character traits led him to do that, traits that include kindness, compassion, honesty, empathy and industry. “We thought he was fabulous,” said Kathryn Bailey, of Novi. “I mean, I think I learned more (about Lincoln) in his one little discussion than I remember from high school, and that was a long time ago. He made it so interesting and so involved, and just the different things that he was saying was bringing everybody in, and he was joking in some places, but very pointedly saying some of the things. So I loved it. I hope (the library) brings him back again.” Susan Horsburgh, of Novi, agreed with Bailey and added that she really enjoyed that Wood told Lincoln’s story in the first person. “It shows that our community has a deep interest in history, not just in Michigan, but throughout the country,” said Kim Nice, the chair of the Novi Historical Commission. Bailey said she liked how interactive Wood was with the audience and how well he was able to answer questions as Lincoln. Bailey said she goes to many library events and had never seen one so well attended. According to Nice, the chair of the Novi Historical Commission, events with a person presenting as a historical figure tend to draw much larger audiences. She said she believes that reenactors make a presentation much more interesting. In this case, approximately 100 people attended the event. “His remarks were just so good. Some of them were, like, tongue-in-cheek with things that he was saying, what he was meaning, but I really liked it,” Bailey said. “I can come back to the other 13 pre-
sentations (Wood does about Lincoln),” said Tom Taepke, of Farmington Hills. “He was very knowledgeable, and it just flowed,” said Larry Urvig, of Novi. “He just got up to talk. He didn’t need notes. No script of any kind.” “It was great. I’ve always been interested in the Civil War, and that’s what brought me out. I’ve been watching a series by Ken Burns called ‘The Civil War,’ and I’ve been enjoying that, but it takes a long time, right, so I saw the lunch with Lincoln, so I said, ‘Oh, that might be a good idea,’” said Julian Velosa, of Novi. “This was the first time that I really understood how the Civil War started and how Lincoln was so interested in abolition. So it gave me a broader understanding. It was very nice, very well done. He knows a lot about the history. So I really enjoyed the event.” Wood has now made a third career of performing as Lincoln. He travels across the country, offering 14 different adult programs as Honest Abe and one children’s presentation. He offers his programs in four languages: English, French, Spanish and German, and performs at all sorts of places, from libraries to schools, nursing homes, churches, parties, fundraisers and more. Prior to his career as Abe Lincoln, Wood worked as an environmental scientist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for 11 years and was a missionary “church planter” in Spain for 10 years. Wood currently resides in Adrian with his wife, a high school teacher who once performed alongside him as Mary Todd Lincoln. He has three adult daughters who “tolerate” him being Lincoln. detoured from 11 Mile Road to Beck Road to 10 Mile Road, and vice versa. The area affected is primarily residential. However, there is one business in the area, Suncrest Senior Living, and the owner, registered nurse Amie Pagano, expressed concern over how the closure could affect response times if they should need to call 911. She said the construction has caused quite a bit of traffic backup, and she worries that it could delay emergency services. Pagano said they have been dealing with construction on the road for a while now, as it had been down to one lane of traffic prior to the total closure. Pagano said that construction delays have been adding five to 10 minutes to her staff ’s daily commute to and from work. “We are 24/7 and can’t shut down. It is what it is, but a friend of mine actually posted a question to me and said, ‘You know (what happens) if you have to call 911?’ And I said, ‘Well, that is going to be the tricky part of it,’ because we take care of seniors. We are a licensed facility. That’s the interesting part of it. We haven’t had to (call 911) yet. But if we do, that would be a little nerve-wracking,” said Pagano. According to Cmdr. Jason Meier, of the Novi Police Department, the closure should not affect emergency response times to the area. He said that both the Novi Police Department and the Novi Fire Department have already discussed the situation and planned alternative routes to the area should there be an emergency. Pagano said the facility has also been dealing with the loud noise caused by the construction site’s generator. She said that it doesn’t bother the patients too much, as many of them are hard of hearing, but it is very loud for the staff. “We just got to try to be patient and hope that it ends soon. It’s all we can do,” Pagano said. Call Staff Writer Charity Meier at (586) 498-1092.

as Belle in Disney on Ice). Her character speaks to me so much, and I think she was my favorite princess when I was growing up. So it’s really lovely to play her,” Olson said. She said this upcoming Detroit show will be only her second time returning to home ice since she joined Disney. “I’ve played Detroit only once before, and that was a couple years ago right after COVID, and I remember that first feeling performing in Little Caesars and having all my friends and family there. I was like, ‘This is something else.’ Such a great arena. The crowds were awesome. They were wild. Some of the loudest crowds I heard were in Detroit. So I’m very excited to be coming back to play Little Caesars,” Olson said. “I really do think the crowds in Little Caesars just kind of hit home for me.” She said that one of her most memorable moments with the show happened the last time she was in Detroit. She said that during the show, Belle had a moment to sit down and wave. It was during that moment that a little girl came up to her and was trying to touch her hand and give her a high-five. “It really was a special moment. I almost cried, she was so genuinely happy to see me, and how could you just not love that,” Olson said. “That was really a special moment. I loved that, and it just happened to be on home ice in Detroit.” Tasich said she was not surprised to hear that Olson is in Disney on Ice. “She was always very elegant. So, I think it’s probably a perfect position for her,” Tasich said. “I’m sure she is going to be great.” Tasich said that she has had several skaters, approximately half a dozen, go on to join Disney on Ice, including Shanda DeWitt, who performed with Disney for a long time and is now behind the scenes, according to Tasich. She said she has also had skaters go on to perform in shows on cruise ships. “We’ve had quite a few over the years,” Tasich said. Disney on Ice tickets are on sale now. Tickets start at $20 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster or at the venue. Call Staff Writer Charity Meier at (586) 498-1092.
