HAZEL PARK/WARREN — On May 17, the Michigan Bureau of Elections determined former Warren Mayor James Fouts’ affidavit of identity was valid as a candidate in the newly redistricted District 14 of the Michigan
House of Representatives. As a result, Fouts will remain on the primary ballot for the seat representing parts of Warren, Hazel Park, Center Line and Madison Heights.
Fouts is running in the Democratic primary against state Rep. Mike McFall, currently representing what is now District 8 of the Michigan House. McFall previously served on the Hazel Park City Council.
Official’s complaint rejected, Fouts stays on the ballot
Hazel Park City Manager Edward Klobucher filed a complaint with state elections officials on April 30, questioning the validity of Fouts’ affidavit of identity and alleging that the former Warren mayor signed the document on April 16 and that the affidavit was not notarized until April 19. This would mean Fouts’ signature was not properly notarized before the
Bonanza of books awaits readers at Warren’s ‘Friends’ bookstore
BY GENA JOHNSON gjohnson@candgnews.com
WARREN — Avid, voracious readers or those who read occasionally for leisure will find a variety of books, games, DVDs, puzzles, magazines and more for low prices at the Friends of the Warren Public Library Bookstore.
Located at 5961 Beebe St., the bookstore is nestled in the garage of Warren’s old Fire Station No. 4 in a building shared with the Warren Crime Commission on one end and the Warren Village Historic District Commission on the other.
This bookstore is quite unique.
“As far as I know in the state of Michigan, Warren is the only library that has a free-standing bookstore. Most of the other libraries in the area have their friends of the library bookstore inside the library — like Sterling Heights, Clinton Township and St. Clair Shores,” said Naida Okray, the president of the Friends of the Warren Public Library’s board of directors.
Having a stand-alone bookstore has its benefits.
“It gives the feeling of being in a bookstore,” said Okray. “You aren’t in a

Investigation into CLPS ransom attack continues
BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
CENTER LINE — An investigation into a cyberattack that occurred May 25, over Memorial Day weekend, in the Center Line Public Schools district continues.
“On Saturday we discovered there was ransomware on our computers,” district Superintendent Joseph Haynes said. “Somebody got in and started making copies of data on our servers. After they took stuff, they locked it down by encrypting it.”
The district’s network system was infiltrated with a ransomware attack. Because the cyberattack is under investigation, school officials are limited in what they can share with the media. Since the computer hack, school officials have been working to determine how the breach occurred and what data was pilfered.
“We have put together a team of lawyers and tech people that are helping us address the issue,” Haynes said. “A lot of our hardware is on pause right now. We’re worried about any kind of data that was taken.”
Ransomware is a type of malicious software that threatens to publish or block access to data or a computer system, usually by encrypting it. The online hack impacted Wi-Fi, internet, security cameras, all forms of communication and educational software. Members of the district’s technological team noticed there was an issue on May 25.
“Our software sent out notifications,” Haynes said. “Our software is supposed to block (a cyberattack), and it lets you know people are trying to get in.”
As soon as district officials were notified of the computer attacks, “We locked down everything,” Haynes said. “We shut down everything.”
Law enforcement has been involved in the investigation.

Senate passes D-Day resolution on 80th anniversary

LANSING/WARREN — State Sen.
Paul Wojno, D-Warren, has always had a soft spot in his heart for the brave soldiers who fought during World War II.
The D-Day invasion June 6, 1944, especially hits close to home because his father, Henry Wojno, and his uncle Edward Guzik — both in the U.S. Army — were part of the battle that occupied the beaches of Normandy, France.
Guzik was at Utah Beach during the first wave on D-Day while Henry Wojno landed in Normandy about three or four days after the initial invasion.
In an effort to honor the service members who fought in the conflict, last month the Michigan Senate passed resolution No. 123 commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The resolution was adopted by the Senate during its Memorial Day ceremony held May 23.

‘Arsenal of Democracy’ beer honors wartime legacy, veterans
BY DEAN VAGLIA dvaglia@candgnews.com
METRO DETROIT — Nearly one year before the United States entered World War II, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared the country would be the “arsenal of democracy” and supply the free world with equipment and munitions to fight the Axis powers.
More than 80 years later, FDR’s iconic phrase will adorn cans across the city that served as the arsenal among arsenals. Over Memorial Day weekend, Detroit Liquid Ventures unveiled its new Arsenal of Democracy Detroit-style lager, made with support from the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum.
“I have a good friend, John Lind, who runs the Arsenal of Democracy Museum in Detroit,” Mark Rieth, Detroit Liquid Ventures founder, said. “We had conversations months back about how it would be a cool idea to launch a beer called ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ on Memorial Day weekend. That was where it started and we just took it from there, and we were able to get it done in time, which was kind of fun.”
Arsenal of Democracy will be sold in 12- and 16-ounce cans and will be served on tap at Ford’s Garage restaurants in Dearborn and Novi. In line with its wartime-inspired name, the olive drab cans feature an M4 Sherman tank with bombers overhead. Both tanks and bombers were produced in the Detroit area. The Willow Run plant built B-24 Liberator bombers, while the Detroit Arsenal in Warren built 27% of the Sherman tanks used in the war.
“They built the tank plant, and then around that nucleus all the other plants were built,” said Lind, the director of the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum. “Thousands and thousands of small feeder plants were built. Ford built the bomber plant out at Willow Run. And the rail spur, which is incredibly important for shipping and receiving, the main rail spur in Detroit fed not only Cleveland but Philadelphia and Chicago and Kentucky and Toledo, where the bulk of the Willys Jeeps were made.”
Tanks and planes were built in Detroit and used by all the major Allied militaries. British and Free French forces used Shermans alongside the U.S. military in North Africa and on the Western Front in Europe,
bombers. Sherman tanks were produced in Warren and bombers were built at Willow Run during World War II.
while the Soviet Union and its tank forces had a significant number of Shermans augmenting the Russian tanks produced on the Eastern Front.
“What we did is we equipped the rest of the world,” Lind said. “We fielded the equivalent of 250 divisions, but we equipped 2,000. And that was us, the great arsenal of democracy.”
The Detroit-style lager itself has a long history. Detroit breweries like Stroh’s, Goebel, Pfeiffer, and about 40 other breweries, were supplying watering holes around the city with cold suds for decades until prohibition came into law.
“I’m a huge lager brewer (and) fan,” Rieth said. “That started back in my Atwater (Brewery) days, and I always wanted to bring back that Detroit-style lager that had been made back in the 1800s. (Arsenal) is an ode to that style of beer that was made back in 1850 when Bernhard Stroh was hand-delivering kegs in wheelbarrows.”
When the ban on beer was lifted and World War II broke out, Stroh’s and other breweries around the country picked up contracts to supply U.S. service members with domestic beer overseas.
“Beer was sent overseas in large, large

notary. Klobucher was reading Fouts’ handwritten “9” as a “6.”
All candidates for the Michigan House of Representatives must submit a notarized affidavit of identity as part of the filing process.
In a letter to Klobucher, Michigan Bureau of Elections Director Jonathan Brater stated, “Mr. Fouts appeared at the Bureau and signed the AOI on April 19. Accordingly, the Department has determined that, whether the signature by Mr. Fouts on the AOI appears to more closely resemble April 16, 2024 or April 19, 2024, the AOI is facially (appears valid and in correct form) compliant with MCL 168.558. Therefore, because the AOI filed by Mr. Fouts meets the strict compliance requirements of MCL 168.558, the department is rejecting your affidavit of identity challenge.”
The letter also referred to the other “9s” Fouts wrote on the document.
“Upon review, the Department agrees that the date Fouts signed is April 19. The ‘9’ used by Mr. Fouts when dating his AOI closely resembles his ‘9’ included in his zip code and does not bear any resemblance to the ‘6’ used by Mr. Fouts when writing the date of the primary,” stated Brater.
Klobucher contends this was an inquiry that needed to be made.
“The affidavit came to my attention, and it looked like the wrong date,” said Klobucher, addressing how he became involved in the matter. “If (Fouts) was able to convince the state that he signed the affidavit in front of the notary, then that’s fine. But to attribute anything else to my intention here is just nonsense.”
Fouts, however, cried foul.
“This was a petty and malicious attempt to keep me off the ballot by McFall’s former colleague City Manager Klobucher,” Fouts said in a statement. “Mr. Klobucher is the City Manager of Hazel Park. What is the relationship with my opponent that would lead him to examine my affidavit of identity in the first place?”
According to Klobucher, he filed the complaint to maintain the integrity of the election process.
“This was just about honoring the integrity of the process,” Klobucher said. “That’s all there is to it.”
Fouts noted, if he had been taken off the ballot, there would be no need for a primary because the only candidates are McFall and Fouts running as Democrats.
“Ballot tampering or an attempt to fix the election should be roundly rejected by
voters of the State House 14th District,” the statement from Fouts read. “Had McFall’s attempt been successful (then) there would have been no primary in the 14th District, thus thwarting the will of the voters!”
Klobucher addressed the “9” that looked like a “6.”
“What did I say from the very beginning? The dates did not look accurate, but it should be investigated by the state, and now that the state has determined there’s no violation, I consider this matter closed,” Klobucher said.
Fouts and McFall will face off in the
Aug. 6 primary election. The winner will move on to the November ballot along with the uncontested Republican candidate for the seat, Barbara Barber.

amounts, and that was to keep the GIs from trying to make their own and possibly poisoning themselves,” Lind said. “Beer was contracted out particularly to the Pacific. There was beer in Europe. That wasn’t a problem.”
For as much relief as Detroit lagers provided service members during the war, Rieth plans for Arsenal of Democracy to be more than just a cold drink with a nifty name. Detroit Liquid Ventures plans on supporting veterans causes along with supporting the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum through licensing its name.
“What we’re doing is we’re trying to support in different ways,” Rieth said. “Fi-
nancially, as part of it, we can’t do it on a percentage of proceeds. It’s not allowed, so we want to make certain that we make some donations to some certain charities throughout the year as good gestures. One would be the Arsenal of Democracy Museum. Crash leaves motorcyclist dead
WARREN — Police and firefighters were dispatched to the area of 12 Mile Road and Imperial Drive at around 7:35 a.m. May 23 where a motorcycle and a pickup truck were involved in a crash.
The motorcyclist was reportedly wearing a helmet but was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to the preliminary police investigation, witnesses observed the motorcyclist traveling westbound at high speed on 12 Mile from Hoover Road, weaving in and out of traffic, then hitting the Chevrolet pickup truck. The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and bystanders performed CPR until first responders arrived, according to police. The driver of the truck was not injured and is reportedly cooperating with the investigation. It is not believed that the driver of the pickup truck was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police stated in a written release. An autopsy by the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine if drugs or alcohol were present in the body of the motorcyclist.

slowly diminishing. I’m honored to recognize those who served on D-Day.”
The Senate resolution states that “approximately 156,000 Allied troops landed along a heavily fortified stretch of French coastline, seeking to breach ‘Fortress Europe’ and strike a crucial blow against the facism of Nazi Germany.”
“More than 5,000 ships and 11,000 aircraft supported the invasion, making D-Day the largest naval, air and land operation ever taken,” the resolution states. “These soldiers, many of whom were not even 20 years, faced a daunting and perilous task as they fought through the ocean surf, braving artillery shells and machine gun fire with little to no natural cover to protect against enemy guns.”
Henry Wojno was in a glider unit, but Wojno said his dad’s unit stopped training because of the casualties that were occurring during practice runs. He then became a spotter in a Piper aircraft.
“My dad was not a pilot but he would pull out binoculars to look for enemy positions,” Wojno said.
Henry Wojno served from June 20, 1942, through Sept. 30, 1945, and was also in England and Germany during the war. He served in three campaigns: the Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland.
Prior to being discharged, the young soldier was given a furlough to use before being sent to the Pacific. When the war ended, that assignment was canceled and Henry Wojno packed his belongings and returned home to the U.S. According to his honorable discharge papers, Henry Wojno earned several decorations and citations: three bronze service stars, a good conduct medal, one over-
seas service bar and one service stripe.
Guzik, who was Wojno’s mom’s brother, was just 19 when he fought at Utah Beach. He also was in the Battle of the Bulge. Wojno remembers Guzik using a cigarette lighter, which on the front read “EHG 6th Engineers Special Brigade D-Day June 6, 1944.” The back of the lighter listed all the European countries where Guzik was stationed: Scotland, England, South Wales, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany and Holland.
Wojno had other relatives who served in World War II, including his dad’s brother, uncle Casmere Wojno, who was in Europe, and his wife Lois, who served stateside in the Navy. Henry Wojno’s childhood friend Stan Staniszewski was wounded in Sicily. The two pals married sisters after the war.
“I miss them all. They’re all gone now,” Wojno said. “When you’re a kid, you sit around and hear stories.”
Sen. Ruth Johnson, R-Holly, was among those in support of the Senate Resolution.
“I think it’s really important for newer generations of Americans to understand DDay, and the sacrifices that were made by the men and women that showed immense courage to defend our freedoms under enemy fire thousands of miles from home,” Johnson said. “Eighty years is a long time. The further it gets away, the less people remember.
“I just can’t even imagine what it would be like to land on one of those beaches,” Johnson said. “There are men that gave their lives so we can live this way. We can learn from (history) and appreciate what we have.”
The entire Resolution can be viewed at legislature.mi.gov/documents/2023-2024/ resolutionintroduced/Senate/pdf/2024SIR-0123.pdf.

Extra Credit Union wins award
WARREN — America’s Credit Unions recently awarded Extra Credit Union with the Diamond Award in the “Ongoing Event”
category at its Marketing and Business Development Council Conference in Las Vegas.
The annual award recognizes the best marketing campaigns in the credit union industry from the past year. Ruthann Varosi, vice president of marketing for ECU, accepted the award at the conference.
ECU offers a number of financial literacy programs at local schools. One example includes the credit union’s own children’s book, “Jack and Lucy.” The book follows the savings adventure of a sibling duo and teaches important subjects like saving money, the difference between a credit card and debit card, long- and short-term goals, and what a credit union is.
ECU representatives visit schools to read to children during March Is Reading Month. This past March, the credit union’s staff read to 1,151 students in 46 classes, at 16 schools and in 12 districts.
“Our staff works hard all year long with March is Reading Month being one of our busiest times,” Varosi said in a prepared statement. “We are so honored to be recognized for our financial literacy efforts that we are proud to see continuing to expand year after year.”
This year’s Diamond Awards marked a milestone, celebrating 30 years of excellence in credit union marketing and setting a new record with over 350 awards distributed.
that Scott Husken was named the director for the new Steve and Kathy McShane STEM Innovation Center.
Husken, of Macomb Township, is currently a technology teacher at the Anchor Bay School District. He will begin his new position on July 1 to assist in the construction of the STEM center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2025.
“My family and I are excited, blessed, and humbled to be chosen for this amazing opportunity. Along with the faculty and staff, I will work to build upon the long legacy of excellence that is expected by the De La Salle community,” Husken said in a prepared statement. “I hope to provide the students with skills that will give them a leg up on the competition for 21st-century jobs.”
Husken has 25 years of educational ex-
perience as a classroom teacher, including 23 years at Anchor Bay. In 2019, Husken was recognized as Teacher of the Year for the Anchor Bay School District.
The building of the Steve and Kathy McShane STEM Innovation Center is a vital component of the school’s capital campaign. The campaign, titled “Builders of Boys. Makers of Men. The Next 100 Years!” plans to keep De La Salle alive and well for another century. The new facility will be located where the school’s TARMAC is presently based.

Ford F-100 pickup keeps on truckin’
BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
METRO DETROIT — What started out as a dilapidated pickup truck is now a sleek, vintage vehicle that draws plenty of attention.
Nearly 25 years ago, Paul Grabski took a chance by purchasing a 1953 Ford F-100 pickup truck. Although he got a good deal on the sale, the vehicle had seen better days.
“It was inexpensive. I brought it home. It was sort of a derelict vehicle,” Grabski, 66, said. “It was so tall. It was an old farm truck that was taken out of a barn in Saginaw.”
The Sterling Heights resident knew that a couple of previous owners tried to turn the vehicle into a hot rod without much success. His plan was to restore the truck and then put it up for sale.
“When I got it running, the vehicle was not in drivable shape,” Grabski said. “No steering, no brakes.”
He changed his mind about selling the truck, though, and decided to keep it. Grabski soon got to work to make the set of wheels his own.
“I tore it down and I rebuilt the entire chassis. Both suspensions, front and back,” Grabski said. “I did the motor up nice, put an automatic transmission in it. Virtually created the truck. In the process I threw everything but the cab and the doors away. It was just all junk.”
Then “life got in the way,” so Grabski parked the Ford in the garage, where it stayed for 15 years.
“A couple years ago we decided we’d go ahead and finish it,” the 1975 Eisenhower High School graduate said.
He found a custom painter who beautified the truck with an indigo blue color.
“It’s not original, but what we did, we did right. It is customized to be more enjoyable and easier to operate than when it was first built,” Grabski said. “It’s pretty

ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY HONORS CENTER LINE STUDENTS
BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
CENTER LINE — When Wolfe Middle School student Landon Cobb was in sixth grade, he could be argumentative and didn’t want to take responsibility for his actions.
Cobb, now in the eighth grade, has come a long way.
“We have always known that Landon was a leader,” Principal Jennifer Serra said. “We just needed to figure out how to get him to lead in the right way.”
Cobb is now on Wolfe’s student council and also is a mentor with the school’s Where Everyone Belongs (WEB) group. Cobb was among 14 Center Line Public Schools students honored during the district’s annual Turn Around ceremony held May 14 inside the Center Line High School media center. The students were recognized one at a time, and each student received a plaque. Serra and teacher Paul Ches recognized Cobb.
“Thank you to Ms. Serra, Mr. Ches and my mother and father for helping me get to where I am right now,” Cobb said. “It took me a while to get here but it was definitely worth it.”
The Turn Around awards are presented annually to students who have overcome challenges to become better students academically, behaviorally, and/or socially.
“I love all y’all,” Wolfe Middle School eighth grader Kristoffer Wright, right, said after receiving a Turn Around award May 14 from school social worker Erin Roddis, who nominated him.
Teachers, counselors, principals and support staff nominate a new group of students each year deserving of the accolades.
The Turn Around ceremony included breakfast, and also welcomed keynote speaker Robert Naubert, an assistant basketball
Warren’s Comfort Food Destination
Craving hearty dishes that taste like home? Look no further than Simple Palate.
This family-owned business was launched in 2018 by Kevin and Carol Romanko, along with their daughter Aubrey and son-in-law Deven, who had put in long hours at other establishments over the years.
“We bought the space where Juliano’s had been for decades, so that Aubrey and Deven’s hard work would secure their future,” Kevin said.
Each member of the family does their part to keep things running smoothly.
“We’re all multipurpose,” Aubrey explained. “Kevin bartends and manages the front of house; my husband and I handle everything from opening to closing, writing schedules, placing orders, cooking, catering, booking and cooking for banquets, managing back-of-house operations and taking care of behind-the-scenes tasks.”
The menu features a variety of mouthwatering options, from appetizers like scratch-made meatballs and loaded nachos to hearty entrees such as New York strip steak and black sea bass, along with a range of glutenfree and vegetarian options. Patrons can also enjoy delicious pasta dishes, including lobster ravioli and shrimp, as well as chicken Parmigiana.
“We have daily specials during the week, like our Burger and Brew for just $10, and on Wednesdays we feature endless spaghetti,” Deven added.
“Mac and cheese is our signature dish; it’s made from scratch and gets rave reviews,” Aubrey said, adding that the public voted Simple Palate a nalist in Macomb County’s Mac Madness: Best Mac in the Mac contest two years in a row.
In February, the restaurant had a surprise dinner guest: President Joe Biden!
“We received a call about a small group wanting to rent the entire building
for a banquet,” Kevin said. “After visiting our space, they revealed it was for President Biden. The next day, the Secret Service and Warren SWAT were here. They took care of every detail, and even brought their own chef to oversee the food prep.”
Carol recalled, “Before the president’s arrival, they had us all leave for an hour to conduct their nal sweep. After the meal, President Biden took the time to thank us privately as a family.”
“All of the people the president brought with him were down to earth and appreciative of us allowing them to use our whole establishment,” Aubrey said. “It was so cool to see people from the White House schmoozing and talking in our restaurant.”
Aubrey and Deven’s two sons, Emerson and Everett, even got to meet the president.
“The president couldn’t have been more attentive and made sure they both got stuffed Commander dogs,” Carol said. “It was an amazing experience.”
“It was an honor to host the president,” Kevin said, “and while everyone has their own opinions, this was about respect for the of ce, irrespective of party, politics or views.”
Simple Palate is located north of I-696 at 27380 Van Dyke Ave. in Warren. Dine in, carryout, catering and banquet facility available.
Hours: 11 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 4 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information or to make a reservation, call (586) 754-8383 or visit simplepalate.com.

Bookstore
library trying to be quiet.”
Customers rave about the wide selection, how the store is organized and the prices.
“Just the variety of books to pick up, and old DVDs,” said Claudia Frenette, who has been coming to the bookstore for more than a decade. “I like mysteries. There’s a lot of them here.”
Deborah Birchfield credits her interest in romance novels and mysteries with helping her learn to read as a teen.
“In fact, this is how I learned to read, (by) reading books. I wasn’t really good at school,” Birchfield said. “My mother used to read true romances and that’s how I started.”
Mysteries, romance novels and authors that write about consistent characters readers can follow through the characters’ life journeys were the favorites among customers on this visit to the Friends bookstore.
“I like the old authors — Janet Dailey. I like Nora Robertson, but she’s not old. I have a list that I follow,” Birchfield said. Included on her list were Julia Quinn, Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, Susan Wiggs and Jude Deveraux, some of whom are no longer writing or have passed away.
“I’m aging. So are the authors,” Frenette said. “That’s something I don’t think I really paid attention to 20 years ago.”
The bookstore also appeals to the younger set with its “kid club.” Those 16 years old and younger can join and receive a card. They get a free book for every 12 visits.
The bookstore is organized by topics, and the books are arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. Shoppers just go to their area of interest to find the books they want.
“It’s very well laid out,” Okray said. Hardcovers and paperbacks can be purchased for a nominal amount.
“The most expensive of our books are $2,” she said.
That includes legal hornbooks that explain specific areas of the law. When purchased new, they are priced upward of $150 each.
The bookstore is operated by volunteers and is open every Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, except for holidays when the library is closed. In addition, every third Saturday of the month is “bag sale day” and the book-
store is open from 9 a.m. to noon.
“We sell beautiful canvas book bags,” Okray said. “If you buy one, then come in on our bag sale day, you can bring that bag in, and you can fill it with all the books you can fit into it for $7.”
Book sales are the Friends’ biggest fundraiser, said Okray. From the sales, they have purchased prizes for the summer reading program, including bikes, a Nintendo Switch accessories kit, Lego sets, memberships to the Detroit Zoo, memberships to the Warren Community Center, gift cards and more.
“Our money goes to pay for programs the city doesn’t put in the budget, for instance the summer reading program. That usually runs about $12,000 a year,” Okray said. “And we are the ones that pay for it.”
The Friends pay for the prizes in the program, according to Okray.
“The summer reading program is very valuable for the city of Warren. First of all, it keeps people reading. It keeps people informed,” Okray said. “And we do our best to make sure that things are bought for them.”
This year, the summer reading program runs from June 8 to Aug.10. Babies, kids, teens and adults can participate. Those wanting to join the program can stop by any branch of the Warren Public Library or register online at warrenlibrary.net.
The Friends of the Warren Public Library have been instrumental to the library.
“There were times when we didn’t have money to buy new books,” said Warren Library Director Oksana Urban.
That was in early 2010, before the 20year millage was passed, which increased the library budget.
“Earlier in 2010, the Friends were our lifesavers because they gave us funds that they made selling books, and we were able to buy bestsellers at that time,” Urban said. “If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have been able to do that because we were really strapped for funds.”
According to Urban, the Friends of the Warren Public Library have been providing financial aid to the library for 52 years.
The Friends are always looking for new members. Those interested in becoming a member can fill out a form with their name and contact information, which is available at every Warren library.

Warren Woods Tower receives new AED device after law takes effect
BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
WARREN — On May 24, state Rep. Mai Xiong, DWarren presented an automated external defibrillator to Warren Woods Tower High School.
The elected official distributed the device in recognition of a new law that ensures schools have lifesaving AEDs on hand. Newly signed public acts No. 36 and No. 37 require that an AED be accessible within one to three minutes during a cardiac emergency.
An automated external defibrillator is used to help a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The medical device can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if needed, deliver an electrical shock to help the heart reestablish an effective rhythm.
Because of the new legislation, the NFL donated 50 AEDs for Michigan legislators to distribute to schools in their hometowns.
“The safety and security of the people of Michigan are among my top priorities,” Xiong said in a prepared statement. “Not only will the presence of an AED help to save the lives of those in attendance of sporting events at Warren Woods Tower, but it will also help save any students who could suffer from cardiac arrest. I’m honored to have gotten the chance to deliver an AED to Tower High School.”
According to Warren Woods Public Schools Superintendent Stacey Denewith-Fici, the district has 15 AEDs strategically located throughout the district. Each school building has at least one device.
Because the high school is the largest building in the district, it has five devices. They are located in various parts of the building so they are easily accessible when an emergency arises. Some staff members, including coaches, nurses and other crisis team members, are trained yearly on the AED. All other staff receive training on a rotating basis.

comfortable to ride in now as opposed to the old farm truck. A farm truck is exactly that. They’re stiff. They’re hard to drive. This changed it all.”
The pickup is now equipped with power steering, power brakes, automatic transmission, air conditioning and power windows. He even installed a Chevy V-8 engine. To keep up with the truck’s authentic appearance, the rear end is a bit higher than the front.
“It gives that hot rod stance to it. I love the wood floor in the back. I like the louver hood,” Grabski said. “I built the truck I wanted to build with the help of some friends and some people I paid to have work done.”
Working on the truck was second nature for Grabski, who has “done auto repair my whole life.” He worked in the auto industry in production, building various car models, motor home chassis and transmissions. The retired GM employee also learned the trade by repairing vehicles when he worked overtime.
“I picked up tons of knowledge repairing them,” he said.
Grabski, who built model cars as a kid, paid attention to the interior.
“This is actually a factory seat reimagined. It used to be a straight, flat seat,” he said of the front seat. “A couple down in Detroit that did the interior came up with this design. We added a box on the bottom; we didn’t have cup holders in ’53.”
Grabski is a fixture at all the local car
haunts, including the Mount Clemens Cruise, Autorama, the annual Shorewood Kiwanis Club of St. Clair Shores Harper Charity Cruise, and Cruisin’ 53, organized by the Warren Community Foundation and the Center Line Festival Foundation.
People have stopped him in the middle of the avenue to snap photos during the Woodward Dream Cruise. He’s won trophies for the vehicle, which has about 2,500 miles on it.
“We get thumbs-up everywhere we go. We get phones shoved out the window at traffic lights,” said Grabski, whose wife, Roberta Hunter, is usually by his side. “You meet a lot of people with a vehicle like this.”

Macomb County leads state in AI and drone inspections
BY GENA JOHNSON gjohnson@candgnews.com
MACOMB COUNTY — The Macomb County Public Works Office announced May 20 that their use of artificial intelligence and drones for critical underground infrastructure inspections will save the county millions of dollars and hours in staff time.
“The Macomb County Public Works Department is very excited and delighted to announce that we will be the first ones in the state of Michigan to be using some new technology, artificial intelligence, AI, as it’s commonly called,” said Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice S. Miller in an informational video.
The technology will allow for critical underground infrastructure inspections as often as needed.
“When we get all the information from this drone and then upload it into our AI software, we’re able to determine what the condition of our underground infrastructure is — every one of our pipes, all of our interceptors — and it allows our management team to put together a capital improvement program to make sure that our infrastructure is maintained properly and does not fail,” said Miller in a written release. “We are going to be saving literally millions of dollars.”
Miller continued about the drone and AI technology in the video.
“We are way ahead of the curve and we’re very excited with that,” she said.
Vincent Astorino, operations and flow manager for the Macomb County Public Works Office, explained how the drone works. The drone is about 16 inches in diameter with lights and a 4K high-resolution camera, protected by a cage and can be lowered into the sewer and flown up to 1,000 feet with a pilot on top of the surface with
a controller. The drone has gone through pipes ranging in diameter from 54 inches to 12 feet, recording video that the engineers then review.
“Right now, we’re inspecting about 150,000 linear feet of linear pipe every three years. The footage we’ve been getting has been extremely difficult for us to come up with those comprehensive plans of what we needed to do,” said Astorino in the video. “Adding these tools into our toolbox, we will be able to better identify the needs across the system. (This) has been a night and day difference for us.”
Engineers are building a database from inspections performed in 2017, 2020 and 2023. Officials have brought in inspection data of more than 400,000 linear feet of pipe and more than 650 manholes. In one of the initial reassessments of previous data, the artificial intelligence found a few additional structural issues in a sewer. This is all part of the Public Works Office’s asset management plan, according to their written release.
The high-resolution video recorded by the drone with improved lighting is efficiently analyzed and scored by a software program called SewerAI, according to Miller’s statement. Previously, video captured with poor lighting took many hours for consultants to record, as well as many hours to analyze.
SewerAI gave a deeper analysis of two stretches of large pipe in the Macomb Interceptor Drain and determined those areas did not require immediate rehabilitative lining. This could be postponed, and efforts focused elsewhere in the long-term capital improvement plan for the Macomb Interceptor Drainage District, according to Miller. This reportedly resulted in a short-term savings of $4 million.
Sinkholes have recently been reported in Warren in the area of 12 Mile Road between Hoover Road and Van Dyke Avenue, which cost nearly $200,000 to repair.
The cost for the drone and the artificial intelligence software totaled $100,000. Macomb County had been spending about
$1 million every three years for inspections, which included a contractor collecting the information, analyzing and coding the data, then reporting it to the department’s engineers. That expense is now eliminated, and staff time is freed up, which increases productivity, according to Miller.
In December 2016 a sinkhole engulfed homes on 15 Mile Road in Fraser one week before Miller took office as the Macomb County public works commissioner. She and her team have made this a top priority.
“We’ve been doing whatever is necessary with the goal of preventing a reoccurrence of another underground infrastructure disaster. Inspections are an important element of that effort, and use of the drone and SewerAI software enables us to perform that task much quicker, more effectively and more efficiently while saving ratepayers millions of dollars,” Miller said in a written statement.

coach at Oakland University. District Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Shannon McBrady created the Turn Around program many years ago.
Roose Elementary School Principal Andrea Kennedy and behavioral specialist Jillian Hamilton shared insight into thirdgrade student Jeremiah Shepard.
“We’re so, so proud of the student he has become. In the past, Jeremiah struggled with impulsivity, often acting without considering the consequences,” Kennedy said. “He often would get so upset and have such a hard time controlling his big emotions, which lead to disruptions in the classroom and challenges with social interactions.”
But, in time, Shepard worked on himself to become a “responsible and super thoughtful member of our school community,” according to Kennedy. One noticeable change is his increased self-control.
“He now shows patience and really thoughtful decision making, which has greatly improved his interactions with his friends, his peers and his teachers,” Kennedy said.
After witnessing a number of positive changes in Crothers Elementary School fifth grader Michael Lipscomb this year, Principal Matthew Provost and teachers Ashlee Norton and Kevin Wickersham nominated him for a Turn Around award.
“I’ve known Michael for five years, and I could not think of a more deserving student than Michael. School has not always been Michael’s favorite place because he’s told me,” Provost said. “We’ve had our ups and downs. At times he’s struggled with peer relationships and tending to his schoolwork. It was a challenge to get Michael to open up and I could see he was frustrated.”
In the last school year, though, Lipscomb made many strides. He is now helping out other students in the classroom and

“Our local police are aware of it. They are the liaison to the Michigan State Police,” the superintendent said. “We had to notify the FBI.”
Because of the incident, school throughout the district was canceled on May 28. Staff and students were back in session May 29.
“We have the internet, and we use Chromebooks,” Haynes said. “Because we are a Chrome-based district, Chrome was

“His frustration and anger has been replaced with joy,” Provost said. “We are extremely proud of Michael for his personal growth this school year.”
“This is my time to shine,” Center Line High School 10th grader Hannah Bizzotto said, practically sprinting to the podium. Staff members Laurie Panfalone and Tammy Kramer recognized Bizzotto, who thanked those who have supported her.
Center Line High School teacher Christel Cook nominated 11th grader Adam Abdullah. Cook first taught Abdullah in class when he was in the Freshman Academy. He had a reputation for telling jokes in class and not turning in his assignments. This school year, Abdullah was a student again in Cook’s classroom, this time for physics, and
not impacted.”
Haynes said “there’s no rhyme or reason” as to who is behind the internet attack or why.
“I have no idea why they decided on us,” he said. “To do any type of ransom, you have to be a techy person.”
Parents and staff were made aware of the situation through a district letter. It’s unclear how long the investigation will take.
“I think it’s going to take some time. We are addressing it to the best of our ability,” Haynes said. “I’ve heard every situation is different.”
he’s passing all his classes.
“He has shown that he wants to improve himself. If he gets a low quiz grade, he says, ‘When am I going to be there to retake it?’” Cook said. “He always wants to challenge himself and others. Every time he makes a mistake, he owns up to it and says, ‘Mrs. Cook, I’m going to do better.’ And that’s all we can ask from a student. I’m blessed to be able to say that I saw that progress from freshman year to junior year.”
Other students who received Turn
Around awards this year were: Roose third graders Damian Espana and Joshua Miller, Peck fourth-grade student Isaac Massey, Crothers fifth grader KeAndrae’ Mitchell, Wolfe eighth graders Kristoffer Wright and Alyssa Smith, Academy 21 11th grader Logan Dean-Czajka, Center Line High School 11th grader Savannah Harris, and Center Line High School 12th grader Delicate Kennedy.
