Voters in Berkley, Clawson school districts approve respective bonds BY MIKE KOURY mkoury@candgnews.com

BERKLEY/CLAWSON — Voters in the Berkley and Clawson school districts both voted to approve bond proposals during the Aug. 8 election. Berkley School District voters said yes to an $88 million bond and voters in Clawson Public Schools said yes to a $25.5 million bond.

MUSTANGS REV THEIR ENGINES INTO 28TH DREAM CRUISE IN FERNDALE FERNDALE — Hundreds of cars packed into downtown Ferndale this past weekend for the city’s annual Dream Cruise festivities. The Woodward Dream Cruise was held Aug. 19 across several cities in metro Detroit, including its hometown and birthplace in Ferndale. The city’s Dream Cruise event was highlighted by the massive Ford Mustang Alley on both sides of Nine Mile Road. Pam and Mike Compson, of Remus, brought their

unique 1967 Mustang that’s painted dusk rose. It previously was owned by Mike Compson’s aunt, Lois Compson Eminger, who used to work at Ford and who they said helped patent the color “dusk rose.” The Compsons came into the Mustang when their aunt was moving and gave the vehicle to them, although they are considering putting it in a museum because of wild animals possibly damaging it where they live. “It means so much to us,” Pam Compson said. “It was (Lois’) car and if it gets crashed, there goes her history.” See MUSTANGS on page 14A

Out of 7,095 voters across Berkley, Huntington Woods and a section of Oak Park, 4,900 voted yes on the bond proposal and 2,195 voted no. Superintendent Scott Francis said the district was excited and grateful to have the community’s support. “When I say ‘full community support,’ I mean support from the city of Berkley, Huntington Woods, north Oak Park — every precinct in all three communities voted in favor of support of this bond for our school district,” he said. The district previously stated the bond money will be used to fund districtwide classroom furniture, multipurpose additions at all elementary schools, performing arts upgrades and additions, athletics upgrades and additions, and districtwide technology upgrades. Francis said the district will work with building leaders and design teams to start the design process soon and determine the next steps. “We have all the conceptual ideas that’s now going from

WWII memorial celebrates phase 1 dedication in Royal Oak BY MIKE KOURY mkoury@candgnews.com

ROYAL OAK — The date of Aug. 10 marked the dedication of phase 1 of the Michigan World War II Legacy Memorial in Royal Oak. The ceremony was held at Memorial Park, 31050 Woodward Ave., where hundreds of veterans, residents and others looking to pay their respects to those who served attended. Phase 1 work on the memorial included 1,400 bricks for its Walk of Honor, flagpoles for each service branch, footings for the Wall of Stars and future “Sea” and “Air” statue scenes, the first two boulders in the War in Words, and the installation of “Joe” on the war front portion of the “Land” scene. President of the WWII Legacy Memorial John Maten said that if he could summarize the installation in one word, it would be “connection.” “How does this memorial help us do that? The statue of a soldier reading a letter from home in the memorial exemplifies this in many ways. Those letters were the instruments that allowed the soldiers and the family to stay connected as best they could,” he said. He also pointed out a quote on the statue from Cpl. Aarol W. “Bud” Irish, of Hemlock, that in part reads, “I can’t even start to explain how much the letter means over here. Just keep the letters coming and I’ll do the rest.” Future work planned for the memorial includes a goal to raise $300,000 to build the Wall of Stars, which would honor the 15,458 Michigan lives lost during World War II. Maten noted the statue of a soldier reading a letter was modeled after the father of the sculptor, Larry Halbert, and that there are plans to make another scene a ways from the statue that would represent the parents of that soldier. “The reason we put it (away from the statue) is to represent the distance between the homefront and the war front, and that continuous connection that they had by way of their letters,” he said. “Another connection it makes is across the generations. As we lay down these paver bricks, we read the stories of the greatest generation. As we watch people find the bricks of loved ones, we see the emotions well and a memory come to life. You don’t even have to know the person to feel a connection to them.” Helping celebrate the dedication were two veterans of World War II, Art Fishman and Frances Masters. Fishman, a Navy veteran, remembered standing in the park 10 years ago when he was first told about the plans to create a memorial. He said he’s been able to see the national World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and that his next goal was to live long enough to see this memorial. “As you walk through these bricks, you’re walking with the Greatest Generation,” he said. EAST OAKLAND COUNTY FOOTBALL PREVIEW

Confused by Medicare or Health Insurance?

BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK

jszczepaniak@candgnews.com

OAKLAND COUNTY — As the summer workouts come to a close, high school teams across the state are ready for another exciting football season. Here are previews for teams in the C & G Newspapers coverage area in eastern Oakland County.

Berkley

Julia Muraj-Bruceti

Last season’s record: 2-7. League: Oakland Activities Association Gold Division. First game: vs. Walled Lake Central, 7 p.m. Aug. 24. Graduation woes hit Berkley last season, and it showed in the wins and losses category. This year, Berkley is on the wrong end of the returning starters pool for both sides of the ball, but they’re determined to improve this season. Led by senior quarterback Sunny Kadlitz, the Bears are more motivated than ever entering the 2023 season. “Sunny is the leadership,” Berkley coach Sean Shields said. “Everyone follows Sunny. If Sunny says, ‘Hey, we’ve got to jump,’ everyone else is asking, ‘How high?’ Everyone knows he’s the guy and that he’s going to do right by everybody.” Alongside Kadlitz, senior wide receiver Brendan Bushey and Fadil Traore lead the pass-catching unit while junior Anthony Anderson and senior Ethan Rothenburg are expected to handle the bulk of the carries. The Bears defense is led by an array of talent including senior Amadou Ndiaye (LB), senior Josh Flanders (DB), sophomore Collin Richardson (DL), sophomore Jack Rittenbery (DL) and junior Kyle Gabriel (LB).

Clawson

Last season’s record: 5-5. League: Macomb Area Conference Bronze Division. First game: at Perry, 7 p.m. Aug. 25. It didn’t look promising when Clawson started out 0-2 to start the season, but league play came when they needed it most as they went 4-1 in the Bronze to earn their fifthstraight playoff appearance. While Clawson graduated a trio of all-

Last season’s record: 5-5. League: Oakland Activities Association Gold Division. First game: vs. Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse, 7 p.m. Aug. 24 It was apparent coming into 2022 that Ferndale possessed the talent to be a successful football team, and they showed just that by improving their win total by four. Now a .500 team, Ferndale is prepared to take that next step with a healthy number of their starters from last season returning. Senior Leander Neal (WR), junior See FOOTBALL on page 6A

Ferndale Fire Department awarded grant

FERNDALE — The Ferndale Fire Department announced that it has been awarded an emergency medical services workforce grant through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. A press release states that the grant will fund education and training for prospective Michigan EMS personnel and that the grant program was created to “continue and expand the development of people employed in EMS — addressing the critical shortage of paramedics statewide and increasing accessibility to EMS education and programming, specifically paramedic programs, in Michigan.” “Barriers to education are real; this grant can remove them for those individuals who are interested in becoming paramedics but have been unable to do so,” Ferndale Fire Chief Teresa Robinson said in a prepared statement. “We’re proud to have received this funding and excited about the awesome opportunity that Ferndale is now able to provide.” The release states that the Ferndale Fire Department will provide selected candidates with sponsorships to a paramedic school. This includes payment of tuition and fees for the program and an hourly wage for hours spent in the program’s scheduled components, such as classes, clinicals and internships.

BERKLEY/ROYAL OAK — A man was found dead by police after he was involved in a car crash at 10:17 a.m. Aug. 10 near Coolidge Highway and Webster Road in Berkley, near the border with Royal Oak. According to police, a 79-year-old Southfield man was driving north on Coolidge at a high rate of speed when his car clipped the rear end of another vehicle as it was starting to approach the turn near Webster. “The vehicle then veered off the road and crashed into the apartment complex on the Royal Oak side and (the driver) was pronounced dead at Beaumont Hospital,” Berkley Public Safety Detective Lt. Andrew Hadfield said. “The initial indication is that he may have passed prior to the crash and that the crash itself was not a factor in the death.” Hadfield said that police do not suspect alcohol or drugs were involved at this time. Hadfield also said there was one person in the apartment when the crash occurred, but the person was not hurt.

Jaden Mills (WR), junior Dekari Smith (RB/ WR), senior Lavarr Croxton (OL) and senior DeMarco Walker (OL) are all expected to be impact performers on the offensive end. Croxton will also anchor the Eagles defensive unit alongside junior Gary Maxwell (DB), junior Darnell Lee (DB), junior Deandre Miller (DL), junior Bryce Ferguson (LB) and junior Antonio Jones (LB).

Hazel Park

Last season’s record: 4-5. League: Macomb Area Conference Bronze Division. First game: at Imlay City, 7 p.m. Aug. 24. On the cusp of having a winning season in back-to-back years, Hazel Park is looking to overcome the hill of having their last winning season in 2017. Hazel Park moved down to the Bronze division last season after struggling in MACSilver play, and was competitive against league opponents. While their offense, which averaged just under 25 points per game, showed flashes of efficiency, the defense’s 25 points per game allowed in 2022 will be an area of improvement going into this season.

Madison Heights Bishop Foley

Last season’s record: 10-1. League: Catholic League Intersectional 1. First game: vs. Pontiac, 7 p.m. Aug. 25. Graduating five all-region players last season, Bishop Foley is entering the 2023 season without a slew of their premier talent from their 10-1 squad last season. Regardless, Bishop Foley’s dominant offense is staying the course with junior quarterback Tad Dobek, junior running back Mason Kanar, senior wide receiver Gabe Martino, and sophomore wide receiver Noah Cronk-Koehler. Foley also returns a key offensive lineman in junior Mitchell Brewer. “We’re not having wholesale changes scheme-wise, but we’re definitely adapting a little bit to their strengths,” Foley coach Brian Barnes said. Currently on a playoff streak of five straight seasons, Foley is embracing the underdog mentality as they look to showcase their young talent this season.

Madison Heights Lamphere

Last season’s record: 8-3. League: Macomb Area Conference Silver Division. First game: at Sterling Heights High School,

7 p.m. Aug. 24. Making the playoffs their last three seasons, Lamphere is poised for another strong year behind junior quarterback Aidan Grzesikowski. Grzesikowski took a massive step last season as the leader in the huddle, and Lamphere coach Ray Ostrowski said he expects him to be even better this season. “He’s just a competitor,” Ostrowski said. “He gets after it in the weight room. He’s put on a lot of size this offseason during the summer and the spring. I just think he’s a competitor.” The offense will also be led by running backs Nico Johnson, a senior, and Amaleki Harris-Ward, a junior, who have an impressive offensive line in front of them with senior Trent Jackson, junior Deandre Verge, and junior Caleb Beaver all up front. Verge will also anchor the defense alongside junior Gavin Chargo (DL), senior Josh Crowe (DL), senior Sully Check (DB), and junior Quincy Twymon Jr. (DB).

Madison Heights Madison

Last season’s record: 1-8. League: Macomb Area Conference Bronze Division. First game: vs. Detroit Douglass High, 7 p.m. Aug. 25. It was another down year for Madison, tallying only three wins total in the last three years. Madison’s offense showed flashes of improvement in 2022, and they’re hoping to get the offense clicking on a more consistent basis this season. Madison will have a difficult test in week two against St. Clair Shores South Lake, a team that beat Madison 38-12 last season.

Last season’s record: 3-6. League: Catholic League Intersectional 2. First game: at Grass Lake, 7 p.m. Aug. 25. Shrine is headed down the right path entering 2023, and head coach Brent Widdows, who is entering his first season as head coach, has his guys motivated for this season. “I think they want to get better and there’s this desire for, dare I say, greatness,” Widdows said. “They don’t want to be somebody’s punching bag.” Shrine opened up the season 0-4, but a 3-2 stretch to end the year has the momentum trending upward behind sophomore quarterback Caydin Barbato and junior running back Josh Cairo. Shrine will open the season with the same four opponents they faced in 2022, so it’ll be an efficient guide as to where the team has improved this year. McDonald said the Miata “is wonderful for the street and the track.” “It provides a thrill and a smile,” he said. “You get out of this car and you can’t help but smile.” As for the 1957 Porsche Speedster, “This is a very rare car. Very few of them were made,” McDonald said. “It has a rear engine

One special piece is the toy replica model of a 1956 Chevy BelAir. “I took my wife on our first date in this car. It was a drive-in in Pennsylvania,” McDonald said. “I was in college. That brings back a lot of memories.” McDonald held executive positions in automotive communication with various companies over the years. I always thought of myself as the conscience of the company. “I started working in 1967, and in 2021, I fully retired. I hung up my car keys, as they say,” the U.S. Army veteran said. “I have enjoyed every moment of my working career. I traveled around the world and met people. I have my friends in automotive media throughout the country and throughout the world I stay in touch with.” He also stays in contact with many people at the M1 Concourse. “We’re friendly people. We’re outgoing,” McDonald said. “We love to talk about our cars. There’s such a variety of cars and people. Everyone from a 1910 Ford Model T to a 2020 Porsche 918. There are a lot of exotic

cars. We have race car drivers, collectors, Corvette guys, Mustang guys.” He also said the M1 Concourse is not a racetrack but rather a performance track. And safety is a priority. “All the cars have to be inspected every year — brakes, tires inspection — to make sure the cars are in good shape,” McDonald said. “It’s a great feeling,” McDonald said of driving along the track. “You’re feeling the Gforce on a turn. You’re feeling the braking and the acceleration. It’s like if you ride a horse. You’re feeling the motion of the horse.” Car owners are allotted a certain number of hours to use the track, and those times shift between morning, afternoon and evening. Each condominium has an official address and a pit lane number. The general public is invited to the M1 Concourse “Cars & Coffee” on the first Saturday of the month from April through October. The time is 8–11 a.m. Each show has a special vehicle theme. The Sept. 2 theme is Ford, Lincoln and Mercury. The Oct. 7 theme is Japanese Domestic Manufacturing and Asian Brands. The M1 Concourse is located at 1 Concourse Drive in Pontiac. For more information, visit m1concourse.com or call (248) 326-9999.

conceptual ideas and projects that the community approved to now the specifics of the design and working with our staff to go through that process,” he said. “Then it goes into a bid process and then shovels start to go into the ground and make those improvements across the district. It’s about a 3 1/2 year timeline. Our design process begins that process, and then through the years, up through 2026.” Specific projects that will be part of the bond include updating the performing arts spaces at the high school, improvements at Hurley Field, cafeteria additions at the elementary schools and new furniture for every transitional kindergarten through 12th grade classroom. Francis said the beginning of the bond work will have a heavy focus on high school projects. “The classroom furniture will be one of the first (of ) our top priorities, and then also performing arts, athletics at the high school and then two elementary additions. We’re gonna start those in phases. So we have Burton Elementary and Pattengill Elementary, the multipurpose cafeterias, that’s in the first phase, too,” he said.

Clawson

Clawson’s bond saw 2,112 voters cast ballots, with 1,214 choosing yes and 898 selecting no. Superintendent Billy Shellenbarger said he was not surprised to see the community vote for the bond. “Just in conversation in the community all summer, whether it was knocking doors and talking to people at different events, it was pretty clear that we were going to get that support again,” he said. “I’m ecstatic

that we got (the support) and, you know, once again, indebted to our community for supporting kids, supporting our unique small town and small school district and allowing us to really set ourselves up for, I mean, the very long future related to being a successful public education institution. So we’re just gonna be able to thrive now because of it, which is fantastic.” The bond’s approval follows a previous $55 million bond that the district received approval for in 2021. The money wasn’t enough to complete the scope of what Clawson wanted to do, so it decided to go for another bond. The scope of the work the bond can now cover includes new painted ceilings, furniture and new exterior windows and doors. “Obviously, the 2021 work continues,” Shellenbarger said. “That will go another year and a half or so. A lot of this work will happen simultaneously. We’ve already started the planning process related to that new 2023 scope of work now that the decisions on what we’re going to do have already been made, and that was part of the process we presented to the community. Those decisions have already been made, but how we do those things and with whom, that’s next. “(It’s) based on timing, what can we do during the school year, what do we have to do after the school year, during the summer, getting bids together, finding out who can do that work and how much to stay underneath our budget,” he continued. “So all of that planning will begin now, and then I would say the $25.5 million with that 2023 bond, you know that first shovel will go in the ground … likely this school year. So it’ll happen concurrently with the work that was already happening from our 2021 bond scope.” Call Staff Writer Mike Koury at (586) 498-1077.

This is only the second year the Compsons have brought the Mustang to Mustang Alley, and Pam Compson said they’ve liked learning new things about the vehicle by bringing it to the alley. “That’s why we’re here,” she said. “We always take something away. … We always find out another something about this little car, whether it’s the hood or the color — well, we know the color — the custom seats, and it’s just fun to listen to people.” Also parked along Nine Mile was Richard Kocan, of Novi, with his 2006 Mustang GT. Kocan has owned the car since it was first released and has owned several Mustangs over the years. Kocan said that once you have a Mustang, it’s hard to get rid of them. “I’ve always been a Ford guy, so I had to stay within the family, but it was an easy choice to make. You just keep the windows down and keep cruising. It’s just enjoyable,” he said. This was the 28th year for the Dream Cruise, and Randy Delamielleure has been able to bring his 1966 Mustang to every single one. He has owned the car for 50 years. Delamielleure, of Williamston, is a for-

mer employee of Ford. He said he actually built his Mustang. “I built this whole car. I’ve had it apart many times. I’ve had probably 10 different engines in this car. I’ve raised children; I had car seats in the car. They’re grown ass men now that have Mustangs,” he said. The 1966 was the first Mustang Delamielleure ever owned, of which he said he’s had around 100 over his lifetime, but this Mustang was one he never wanted to part with. “I was married for 38 years. I just went through a divorce and this car had to be sold, but I wouldn’t sell it, so I had to buy my ex out to keep the car,” he said. “That’s how bad I wanted to keep it. So it was actually in storage for three years until we decided what we’re going to do. But it’s always been here at Mustang Alley or ever since they’ve had Mustang Alley.” Delamielleure said he likes coming back each year to the Dream Cruise, as he likes being able to check out all the other Mustangs and how the car has evolved over the years. “It’s important to see what other people’s ideas are, get ideas, and to see what the younger generations are coming up with, and then the newer cars and designs,” he said. “It’s just kind of overwhelming.” Call Staff Writer Mike Koury at (586) 498-1077.

Memorial from page 3A

Masters was a Rosie the Riveter at the Willow Run bomber plant, which she joined right after high school. Her two brothers and future husband also served in the war. She noted that her husband served in Iwo Jima and her oldest brother was in the Battle of the Bulge, though he sadly didn’t come back home. “I did my job riveting airplanes. … I lost about 10 pounds and gained 20 of muscle,” she said. “I did that throughout the war and I would do it again. I have no regrets.” Mark Reed, a member of both the Marines and Navy who served in Desert Storm, was taking in the memorial and Walk of Honor. He said the memorial was “long overdue.” “I’m particularly interested in seeing that there are a lot of different things represented here,” he said. “It’s not simply the Army, Navy, Marines, whatever, but there’s a lot of civic organizations that are represented here as well, and a lot of civilian folks that contributed to the war effort in World War II as well — you know, the Rosie the Riveters and the people that worked in the automotive industry. You’ll see bricks commemorating them too. So it’s a good, long overdue memorial.” Call Staff Writer Mike Koury at (586) 498-1077.

Sign stolen during vehicle break-in

BERKLEY — Police responded to a report of larceny from an automobile at 6:02 a.m. Aug. 4 in the 2000 block of Columbia Road, near 11 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway. The report states that a 70-year-old Berkley woman’s vehicle had been broken into. Police found broken glass near the vehicle and what appeared to be the entry point to get inside. The woman told police that a box that contained a Christmas wreath with candles had been taken from the vehicle and placed on the porch, where she found it in the morning. She also noticed that a crossing guard stop sign with LED lights, issued to her by the city of Huntington Woods, was missing. The value of the crossing guard sign was estimated at approximately $150.

Man arrested for heroin possession

BERKLEY — A 25-year-old Detroit man was arrested for heroin possession at approximately 1:56 p.m. July 30 near Woodward Avenue and Oxford Road. According to the report, police were on patrol in the area when dispatch put out a call for a blue Ford Edge that had been driving recklessly on Woodward. Police were able to locate the vehicle and pull it over. An officer reportedly noticed the subject in the vehicle had track marks on his arms and constricted pupils. The man failed sobriety tasks that were given to him, though he did submit a preliminary breath test of 0.0% blood alcohol level. Police located a small plastic bag with a powdery substance in a garbage bag, as well as a small amount of potential heroin in a phone case. The man was arrested at the scene. — Mike Koury

OK2SAY shows increase in reports

METRO DETROIT — On July 25, the office of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released an annual report that showed Michigan State Police logged more than 7,400 tips from OK2SAY in 2022, which was a 19% increase from the previous year. OK2SAY is a student safety program which allows anyone to confidentially report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at Michigan students, school employees or schools. Tips can include reports on bullying, individual threats to a specific person, drugs and alcohol use, harassment and depression. OK2SAY is available 24/7 and tips can be submitted by calling (855) 5652729 or texting to 652729, which stands for OK2SAY. Tipsters also can send an email to OK2SAY@mi.gov or at the website michigan.gov/ok2say. The OK2SAY mobile app is available for download in app stores for iPhone and Android. Initial tips are fielded by Michigan State Police OK2SAY technicians. They are trained to receive, analyze and disseminate tip information to local law enforcement agencies, school officials, community mental health service programs, or the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for a timely response. The state’s fiscal year 2024 budget includes an additional $378,000 to support the hiring of three more OK2SAY technicians to respond to the increasing number of tips.
