Former administrators file discrimination lawsuits against superintendent, Eastpointe school district BY MARIA ALLARD

allard@candgnews.com

EASTPOINTE/DETROIT — Two former Eastpointe Community Schools administrators have filed lawsuits against the

district and its superintendent alleging they were discriminated against because of their race. Eastpointe Community Schools Superintendent Christina Gibson and the district itself are named in two separate lawsuits that

were filed this past summer in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. On July 14, former Eastpointe High School Principal Asenath Jones filed a formal complaint against Gibson and the

school district accusing the superintendent of creating a hostile work environment, race discrimination and retaliation. The next month, on Aug. 23, former secondary administrator Renita M. Williams See LAWSUIT on page 7A

Military museum purchases building from Eastpointe for $1 BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com

EASTPOINTE — For the past several years, members of the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society have leased an 11,000-squarefoot building at 16600 Stephens Road. Earlier this month, the museum announced that the members now own the building after purchasing it from the city of Eastpointe for $1. At the May 9 City Council meeting, the council voted 3-1 to approve offering ownership of the building to the museum for $1. Harvey Curley, Rob Baker and Stacy Cobb-Muñiz voted in favor of the motion while Mayor Monique Owens voted no. Cardi DeMonaco Jr. was absent. Owens did not comment on why she voted against the measure. “We own the building now. It was unexpected,” said Wendy Richardson, who is the treasurer of the MMTHS board. “If we leave the building before our 10-year agreement (is up), the city

NORTHERN MICHIGAN — What better way to truly explore the beauty of autumn than a road trip, especially in northern Michigan. While there are plenty of scenic rural stretches across the state, the upper stretch of the mitten offers countless panoramas of forested ridges, dunes and lakeshores ablaze in fiery reds, oranges and yellows. Fall officially starts Saturday, Sept. 23, but colors across the northern lower peninsula are expected to reach partial to peak displays the first two weeks of October, according to various sites tracking fall foliage. If you’re thinking about a road trip north, here are a few scenic drives to consider.

Tunnel of Trees, M-119

This 20-mile scenic stretch along Lake Michigan, from Harbor Springs to Cross Village, is by no means a

road less traveled (expect heavy traffic on weekends and other times), but there’s a reason why it’s so popular and a must-visit in the fall. Officially a state highway, M-119, this shoreline road is thick with trees, their canopies reaching over the roadway. In the fall, the trees create a tunnel of colors. Adding to the magic are glimpses of Lake Michigan, nature preserves and small villages. Just outside Harbor Springs, Pond Hill Farm offers a one-stop fall extravaganza, with pumpkin patches, hay rides, u-pick fruit, hot cider, donuts and more. There’s a playground for kids and farm animals to feed. Farther north, stop at the Good Hart GenSee ROAD TRIPS on page 13A

ROSEVILLE/WARREN — A former Roseville police officer is facing charges after an investigation by the Michigan State Police revealed that he allegedly was in possession of child sexually abusive material. In December 2022, the MSP’s Second District Special Investigation Section began an investigation into possible child exploitation crimes, according to a post by the Second District on X, formerly Twitter. Dawn Fraylick, communications director for the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Rumbley Office, said the investigation began after Michigan State Police received a tip. The State Police handled the investigation to avoid the appearance of any conflict of interest, she said. In February 2023, a search warrant was executed at the home of Issiah Joseph Rumbley, a 23-year-old Warren resident who was employed as a Roseville police officer at the time of the warrant. Roseville Deputy Police Chief Mitchell Berlin said Rumbley resigned from the department in June. Rumbley was arraigned Sept. 12 in the 37th District

Redford man facing charges for allegedly shooting multiple people in Eastpointe BY BRIAN WELLS bwells@candgnews.com

EASTPOINTE — A 38-year-old man from Redford is facing charges for allegedly shooting multiple people at an Eastpointe residence. On Sunday, Sept. 3, Dominic Flynn allegedly arrived at a party in the area of Toepfer Drive and Kelly Road and shot three people. Dawn Fraylick, communications director for the Flynn Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, said the incident occurred because Flynn “(had) an issue with one of the victims” but did not provide further details. In an email dated Sept. 7, Fraylick said all three victims were expected to recover and none were in critical condition. Flynn was not arrested at the scene, Fraylick said, but she did not provide further details.

Lawsuit from page 1A

filed a lawsuit against Gibson and the school district. Williams is bringing the action because she said she was discriminated against because of her race and she suffered inequality, retaliation and a hostile work environment. Jones and Williams are Black, and Gibson is white. Both plaintiffs are being represented by attorneys Jeffrey C. Hart and Charissa Huang, of the Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge law firm in Ann Arbor. The plaintiffs are asking for jury trials. The Eastsider contacted Gibson’s office for comment and received the following statement via email: “We are continuing to work with district legal representation to assess these claims. We are prepared to defend against these allegations vigorously as we continue our work to serve and educate the children in our community.” Williams, who worked for the district from 2016 to 2021, states she was one of three Black administrators at the time. Her complaint states the district received Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds for staff members who were required to attend school in person “while the COVID-19 virus was virulent and thought to be life threatening” during the 2020-2021 school year. At the time, Williams was employed as an assistant principal at Eastpointe High School. Williams alleges the ESSER grant money was provided to the district’s white administrators but the defendants failed “to provide the same grant to BLACK administrators which included the plaintiff.” Because Williams didn’t receive the grant money, she felt “indignity, humiliation, shame and embarrassment.” She decided to leave Eastpointe Community Schools and claims Gibson “made it a mission to contact prospective employers

and to badmouth the plaintiff ” as she looked for work in other districts. “Defendant Gibson used an app that many of the school districts used for hiring and defendant Gibson intentionally kept tabs on plaintiff,” the lawsuit states. “Once plaintiff submitted an employment application to a school district, defendant Gibson felt compelled to intervene in the contractual relationship plaintiff was attempting to obtain with new school district prospects.” In Jones’ lawsuit, she states that Gibson used racial slurs on more than one occasion. Jones also states she was harassed for seeking diversity, equity and incluGibson sion training and endured hostile comments for attending a Martin Luther King diversity, equity and inclusion conference. Because of the hostile work environment, the lawsuit states, Jones submitted a letter of resignation earlier this spring with her last day officially May 9. According to the lawsuit, she was “escorted off the Eastpointe High School premises by the superintendent’s staff.” Jones’ resignation came several weeks after the school board on March 30 voted 6-0 to adopt a resolution for consideration of nonrenewal for Jones’ contract. Trustee Mary Hall-Rayford was excused from the meeting. Gibson has been superintendent since July 1, 2022. In 2021, she received the Michigan Association for Media in Education Service Award for School Administrators. The award recognizes a school administrator or team of administrators who have made a unique and sustained contribution toward furthering the role of the school library and its development in a school program. One sketch that always stands out is when those onstage think napkins are $100 bills. Other parts of the show have the volunteers play various musical instruments while under hypnosis or dance like showgirls. “It’s fun and it’s funny to watch,” Lepine said. “You’re laughing with them.” Another good skit for Lepine is when he puts a married couple together with one spouse hypnotized and the other not. “The unhypnotized spouse will say a color and the (hypnotized) spouse will give the most passionate kiss of all time,” Lepine said. “The kissing routine is probably one of my favorite parts. There’s a level of passion that is just awe inspiring.” Lepine, whose wife, Emily Lepine, is his onstage assistant, also lets the audience make fun of him. “I’ve got no problem being the butt of the jokes,” Lepine said. Lepine is a hometown talent. He graduated from East Detroit High School in 1993 and lived all over metro Detroit, including Warren and Dearborn, before he moved to Vegas in 2010. Not one to forget his roots, Lepine comes back to the Comedy Castle every year. It’s one of the places in which he honed his craft and also found inspiration in the other acts onstage. “It’s always great to run into old friends. It’s great to catch up with people. That’s where I saw my heroes perform, and Mark Ridley gave me advice throughout the years,” Lepine said. “I would go to the Comedy Castle as much as I could. Being onstage was always the place where I found myself. It does my heart and soul good to be up there.” The Comedy Castle staff is always happy to welcome him back. “I’ve known Kevin for a very long time. I get reviews of his shows,” Comedy Castle owner Mark Ridley said. “He just seems to hit a home run with the audience. They love him. They want to see more of him. It’s interesting to watch people when they are under hypnosis.” Comedy Castle comedian Tom McCarthy will open the show. Macomb County prosecutor appealing 2017 case to U.S. Supreme Court MACOMB COUNTY — A Macomb County Circuit Court judge earlier this month granted a request for a stay of further proceedings in a criminal sexual assault case. On Sept. 7, Circuit Court Judge Joseph Toia granted the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office’s request for a stay of further proceedings in the case of Anthony Veach, who was convicted of multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct in 2017, but whose appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court has resulted in a new trial. At press time, Veach remained in custody on his original bonds.

The case so far

Veach was convicted of seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in three different cases that were consolidated into one jury trial. He was accused of sexually assaulting his daughter when she was 15 and 16 years old. Dawn Fraylick, communications director for the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Of-

fice, said in an email that the crimes took place at Veach’s home in Macomb County between March 2015 and July 2016. According to court documents, Veach lived in three different municipalities where he is alleged to have committed the crimes. He was sentenced to 20 to 60 years in prison for each of the first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges and 10 to 15 years for each of Veach the second-degree charges. Each sentence was to be served concurrently. According to a press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, Veach appealed the convictions due to the trial judge, Toia, closing the courtroom during the daughter’s testimony without putting the specific reasons for the closure on the court record. The Michigan Court of Appeals found that there were valid reasons on the record to close the courtroom. At three previous preliminary examinations at the district court level, the courtrooms had been closed during the daughter’s testimony, according to the review of the case in the Michigan Supreme Court’s order.

On July 28, the Michigan Supreme Court’s order reversed the Court of Appeals’ decision, finding that the trial court violated the U.S. Constitution’s Sixth Amendment by not placing the reasons for closing the courtroom on the record. This decision vacated Veach’s convictions and gave him a new trial. “Since the trial court did not consider any alternatives to closure during the complainant’s testimony, defendant’s publictrial right was violated and we reverse and

remand for a new trial,” the Michigan Supreme Court’s order reads in part. “The mere fact of closure during preliminary examination is insufficient to support closure at trial,” the order reads. The entire order, which includes Michigan Supreme Court Justice Brian Zahra’s dissent, is 37 pages in length. Zahra “vigorously dissented and would have ruled the record clearly established the basis to close the courtroom during the child

The MMTHS, which opened on Nov. 11, 2011, is dedicated to preserving the stories of Michigan residents who served in the military from World War II to the present. The building contains equipment, artifacts, uniforms and weapons that tell their narratives. One current piece on display is the 1943 Clark CT-6 Clarktor, which was built in Battle Creek and powered by a six-cylinder Chrysler engine. It was used for moving planes, cargo and armaments. The vehicle has been fully restored and won a gold award from the Military Vehicle Preservation Association in the restored class. Additionally, according to his Macomb County Jail information, the Clinton Township Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriff ’s Office have placed holds on Flynn for outstanding warrants, meaning he would remain in custody for those agencies if he were released on the Eastpointe case. Clinton Township’s warrant is for assault with intent to do great bodily harm; Wayne County’s warrants are for operating a chop shop and receiving and concealing stolen property. If Flynn were to be released from jail, he will be required to wear a GPS steel cuff tether, be on home confinement, have no weapons or firearms, and have no contact with any witnesses or victims. Flynn was also referred for a mental health assessment,

$50,000 so we can fix the roof. It needs major repairs,” Richardson said. “We’re trying to do beautification of the building. It needs to be painted.” The museum members invite the public to its “Walk Through History” event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 30. Reenactors representing different eras of American military history will provide demonstrations on the front lawn. Spectators can view the uniforms and equipment from various 20th century conflicts and learn about the hobby of historical reenacting. Admission will be by donation for the day. The museum is open for school field trips and Scout meetings. It can also be used for holiday parties, Richardson said. The MMTHS is located at 16600 Stephens Road. Flynn was scheduled for a probable cause hearing at 8 a.m. Sept. 19, after press time, and a preliminary exam at 8 a.m. Sept. 26. Both hearings will be in front of 38th District Court Judge Kathleen Galen. Flynn’s attorney, Nijad Georges Mehanna, said in an email Sept. 13 that he had yet to receive any discovery materials in the case, so he wasn’t familiar with its specifics yet. “I will vigorously represent Mr. Flynn in order to ensure that his rights are protected,” Mehanna said. ROSEVILLE — If you’ve ever visited American House East I on Common Road, you probably have come across resident Carol Huck. She has been a resident there for 25 years, including when the senior living community was known as the De Seranno Residence. On Aug. 30, a luncheon was held to honor Huck for all that she does for the residents and staff of American House East I, which is sometimes referred to as the “Belgian Castle” because of its architecture. Huck is known as the “face” of American House, as she has worn many hats for 25 years while making friends with other residents and staff along the way. She is the acting eucharistic minister and handles bookkeeping at the community’s St. Rene Chapel. She also runs the community’s library and weekly resident bingo. As part of the New Resident Welcoming Committee, she is usually the first person new residents meet. “She always has a smile on her face and a kind word to share,” Community Relations Director Jade McCollister said in a prepared statement. “We are so thankful to have Carol as a resident and look forward to enjoying many more years with her.” — Maria Allard

eral Store, in the village of Good Hart, home to a few hundred people. The general store is a rare find and serves as the village’s grocery, bakery, deli and post office. You can pick up homemade pies, cookies and other treats. If you’re looking for a diversion to a local beach or picnic spot, the store staff will guide you. At the end of the sometimes twisting route lies Legs Inn in Cross Village. It’s as kitschy and rustic as you might imagine but the inn is well-known for serving some of the best Polish fare around — including pierogi, smoked whitefish and stuffed cabbage.

M-22, Manistee to Glen Arbor

It’s a long and winding road from Manistee to Glen Arbor, but one far less-traveled than the popular Tunnel of Trees. Pick up Route 22 just north of Manistee and follow along the Lake Michigan coastline, past orchards and vineyards and farm stands selling apples and other seasonal produce. The two-lane highway passes through small communities like Onekama, Arcadia, Elberta and around picturesque inland lakes. There are spots along the way to pause and take in views of Lake Michigan. Stop in Frank-

fort for a cold brew at Stormcloud Brewing Co. or shop along its tidy main street. Farther north, the road passes through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Learn more about the nearly 72,000-acre park at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire or detour along Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive for even more impressive views of Lake Michigan. Empire is also home to one of the best chocolatiers around, the Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate Shop. Always busy, Glen Arbor boasts several restaurants, gift shops, wine tastings, bike rentals and paddling adventures. M-22 continues along the perimeter of the Leelanau Peninsula, with easy access to about two dozen wineries, busy with harvest in the fall, and other small towns — Leland, Northport and Suttons Bay.

River Road, River Road National Scenic Byway

What can we do together? Can we build stronger, healthier communities? Can we make health better by making it better for everyone? Can we impact today and inspire tomorrow?

The River Road parallels the winding Au Sable River in northeastern lower Michigan, from Oscoda to Huron-Manistee National Forest. The 22-mile stretch, known as the River Road National Scenic Byway, offers wonderful views of the famous river from high vantage points and stops at wellknown landmarks. The following is for education purposes. “Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love but to use violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.” ....Mother Theresa THE ABORTION PILL: KNOWLEDGE IS POWER How it works • The “abortion pill” is two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. • The “abortion pill” is typically prescribed for up to 11 weeks of pregnancy. • Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for healthy pregnancy • Misoprostol-typically taken 48 hours after the first pill-induces early labor to expel the growing embryo. Misoprostol is a medication originally intended to prevent ulcers.

What Doctors are Saying Many board-certified OB/GYN physicians caution the use of this strong drug at home without on-site medical supervision. Dr. Catherine Stark, an OB/GYN physician who has cared for thousands of pregnant women over the past 25 years, warns that the rapid expansion of the availability of this drug “disregards patient safety and ignores the well documented side effect profile of this drug.” A recent study from Canada showed about 10% of women who had at-home abortions with this method required an ER visit within six weeks of taking this abortion pill. Side Effects and Risks This abortion pill process results in symptoms similar to miscarriage: heavy bleeding and spotting for an average of two weeks and cramping. About half of women taking the abortion pill will experience: • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea • Infection and sepsis • Ruptured ectopic pregnancy • 28 women have died taking mifepristone The abortion pill fails in approximately 5% of cases, at which point a surgical abortion is then often indicated. Abortion Pill Reversal: Is it too late? Women who begin the process of chemical abortion may experience feelings of regret and severe anxiety. If you have already taken Mifepristone- the first of the two pills- but have not yet taken the second pill, it may not be too late. A progesterone treatment commonly used to prevent miscarriage may be able to help.

THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT

When God gave Moses the Ten Commandments (for the benefit of the Israelites and for us). He did not call them the ten suggestions. To refresh our memory, they are: 1. I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have false gods before Me. 2. Thou Shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. 3. Remember keep holy the Lord’s day. 4. Honor thy father and mother. 5. Though shalt not kill. 6. Thou shalt not commit adultery. 7. Thou shalt not steal. 8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. 9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife. 10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods. As prolifers, it is the fifth commandment that concerns us the most because we know that every day an unborn baby is killed every twenty minutes in the United States. That’s a lot of babies, a lot of very young people, a lot of times the Fifth Commandment is broken every day. We should pray every day for an end to the holocaust of abortion. May America once again live by the ten Commandments and may we become God’s children living in peace and harmony with each other.

victim’s testimony,” the press release from the Prosecutor’s Office states. “Although one can hope that the victim has the strength and willingness to go through another trial, there is a very real possibility that now, seven years after the events at issue occurred, the victim will not want to recount on a courtroom witness stand, yet again, the abuse that she suffered, forcing her to relive the trauma,” Zahra said in his dissent.

Prosecutor’s Office files appeal

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office is filing to appeal the Michigan Supreme Court’s decision with the U.S. Supreme Court. “Does the Sixth Amendment right to a public trial require subjecting the child rape victim to an automatic retrial based on a technicality when there are ample and (obvious) reasons in the court record justifying the closure of the courtroom during the child victim’s testimony, even if the trial court does not expressly state those reasons on the record?” the press release states. In the press release, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido explained his office’s goals.

“We are determined to do everything within our power to shield the sexual assault victim from further trauma and ensure that justice is served,” Lucido said in a statement. A brief prepared by Lucido’s office is due to the U.S. Supreme Court at the end of October. Once received, the defense will respond with its own brief. Once both have been submitted, the Supreme Court will decide whether or not it will hear the case. If the court decides not to hear the case, a retrial will be necessary, according to the press release. Steven Helton, Veach’s appellate attorney, said the Michigan Supreme Court’s decision recognized that a public trial is a prerequisite to a fair trial. “The founders also recognized this fact, which is why the Michigan Constitution and the United States Constitution both explicitly guarantee all people the right to a public trial,” he said in an email. “If the prosecution does file an appeal in this case, the State Appellate Defender Office will continue to represent Mr. Veach and to defend the Constitution.” Helton works for the State Appellate Defender Office. Joan Ellerbusch Morgan, who is listed as Veach’s current trial attorney, did not return a request for comment.

PONTIAC — Fasten your seat belts — it’s time for the third annual American Speed Festival. The event will race into town from Sept. 28 through Oct. 1 at the M1 Concourse, located at 1 Concourse Drive, which is situated at the northwest corner of Woodward Avenue and South Boulevard. “The American Speed Festival offers more than just static displays; it provides an engaging and captivating experience for people of all ages,” an American Speed Festival press release states. “Attendees can fully immerse themselves in the event, hearing the thunderous roar of a NASCAR as it enters the pit lane, catching the scent of burning rubber around the track, and witnessing the thrilling spectacle of time attacks. It’s an interactive event that truly brings the excitement to life.” The M1 Concourse is a playground for any car buff. The 87-acre property features a 1.5-mile road course, an events center, and indoor and outdoor spaces that overlook the racetrack. Also built on-site are private car condominiums that feature living rooms, kitchenettes and personal garages, which will open for a fee on late Friday afternoon. The four-day American Speed Festival is a chance for car owners and spectators to mingle in an automotive setting. There will be race car drivers and sports car owners onsite. Everything from vintage Indy cars to historic stock vehicles to classic cars will spin their wheels. Some of the cars were built for

The river, which empties into Lake Huron, was once a major transportation route for floating giant white pines from the surrounding forests. speed, while others became popular because of their unique style. “It will be a mix of early classic cars, Packards from the 1930s, cars from the ’50s, ’60s, Oldsmobiles, Buicks,” M1 Concourse CEO Timothy McGrane said. Festival officials have set up the event so onlookers “can get up close and personal and talk to the drivers,” McGrane added. In addition, the American Speed Festival will celebrate three significant automotive anniversaries: 100 years of Americans at Le Mans, 70 years of Corvette, and 50 years of International Race of Champions (IROC) Series. The “vroom vroom” fun begins on Thursday with the “speed ring” circuit laps for competitors from noon to 5 p.m., followed by the Motor Grille driver reception from 6-9 p.m. The speed ring is a rare opportunity to see race cars from every era perform on the Concourse track. The momentum continues on Friday with on-track activities featuring various classifications of supercars, endurance race cars, vintage Indy race cars and Le Mans race cars. Corvette fans will want to stay for the Corvette parade laps at 12:50 p.m., along with the Reeves Callaway tribute, set for 12:25 p.m. Callaway founded Callaway Cars and was well known in the Corvette community. “He passed away suddenly earlier this year,” McGrane said. “We’ll have six of his race cars from when he raced on display.” Among the many activities on Saturday will be a parade lap featuring Ford GTs and GT40 sports cars, among more speed ring events. The festival will finish out Sunday with an awards ceremony, an art expo, an Americans at Le Mans seminar, a vintage Indy seminar and more.

photo opp for Instagramers. Along the way, stop at Iargo Springs and descend the 300 or so stairs to the clear springs. The stairs were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, but the springs were first discovered and used by Native Americans. The surrounding forest is abundant with outdoor activities, everything from camping and hiking to trails for off-road vehicles. Cap your road trip with a ride on the AuSable River Queen, the only paddlewheel boat operating in northern Michigan. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy views of exploding colors along the river, from the river. Greg Tasker is a Traverse City-based freelance writer.

“There are so many great cars out there,” said McGrane. But if he had to pick his favorite model, he said it would be “the 1959 Aston Martin DBR1.” McGrane, who grew up in Kent, England, in the southeastern part of the country, remembers the look of the luxury sports car, which gained fame for the James Bond movies. “It was sort of a brand I was fond of when I was a young boy,” McGrane said. “I grew up very close to a racetrack. Cars were something that made an impression on me very early in my life.” For more information about the American Speed Festival — including admission fees to the various events, off-site parking and shuttles — visit m1concourse.com or call (248) 326-9999. Seaholm High School student earns Shining Star Award

BIRMINGHAM — Birmingham resident Zoe Granger will be awarded the Shining Star Award by the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan at a signature fundraising event Sept. 7 at Chroma, in Detroit’s historic Milwaukee Junction. Granger, a senior at Seaholm High School, is being honored for developing the Caring Kids Kits and her contribution to the Girl Scouts. At the presentation Sept. 7, she will become an honorary Girl Scout. “Zoe Granger exemplifies what it means to be a Girl Scout,” Monica Woodson, the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan, said in a press release. “She saw a need and created a project that made a positive impact in our community. She generously offered her time and leadership experience to our Girl Scouts. Zoe inspires all of us to do more for others.” More information on the Shining Star Award and this year’s fundraising event can be found at gssem.org/gala.

YAPPY HOUR TO BE HELD SEPT. 21 ROCHESTER HILLS — Metro Detroiters are invited to Meadow Brook Hall’s sprawling gardens 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, to support the Michigan Animal Rescue League at its 14th annual Yappy Hour. Proceeds from the pet-friendly cocktail party – MARL’s biggest fundraising event of the year – will support the organization’s work of providing life-saving care to over 1,500 homeless and at-risk dogs and cats each year. Attendees will enjoy cocktails, culinary delights, gourmet treats, several photo opportunities, a silent auction and more while mingling with two- and four-legged guests throughout the fundraiser. “Yappy Hour is a truly special event. This year we are celebrating 70 years of MARL’s unwavering dedication to animal welfare so guests can expect an especially memorable evening,” Magee Humes, MARL’s executive director, said in a press release. ”The funds raised are critical in allowing us to continue our important work of providing life-saving care to homeless and at-risk dogs and cats.” Cat lovers can also join in on the spirit of Yappy Hour by supporting Team Cat and MARL’s feline friends. Yappy Hour tickets start at $125 and include two drink tickets, a strolling dinner and unlimited gourmet dog treats. Certain sponsorship levels include an invitation to an exclusive VIP pre-event reception. All information can be found online at marl.org/yappy-hour.
