MOUNT CLEMENS — Water customers on the Mount Clemens system can expect their rates to go up soon as the City Commission approved a slate of rate increases at its Aug. 21 meeting. City officials cited a decreasing amount of water customers as the cause for the higher rates. In the memo outlining why the board should approve the increases, City Manager Gregg Shipman writes, “Over the last 11 years, water sales have decreased by 26% or about 2% per year. This has resulted in a loss of revenue and working capital. Repairs and capital improvements at both facilities are consistently ongoing due to the physical age of both plants. We anticipate the need for major capital expenditures to maintain services.” The retail water consumption rate is now $4 per 100 cubic feet with a quarterly fixed rate of $33.30, while the sewer consumption rate is $6.35 with a quarterly fixed rate of $25.50. The city’s rates for wholesale customers in Clinton Township, Harrison Township and the Selfridge base have gone up drastically. Clinton Township customers have a 49.5% increase, from $27.84 to $41.63; Harrison Township increases by 33%, from $28.44 to $37.83; and Selfridge increases by 73%, from $26.54 to $45.91. Septic vacuuming and hauling rates are increased to $454 per truck and 9 cents per gallon. The increases come as Mount Clemens looks toward join-

Harrison Township teen publishes first novel BY DEAN VAGLIA dvaglia@candgnews.com

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Many teens dread the thought of facing down an essay in school, but in Harrison Township, one 15-year-old approaches writing differently. Aaralynn Karman will release “Meeting Twilight,” the first book of the young writer’s fantasy series “The Great Diviner,” on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Finding its origins in a dream Karman had, the novel follows 14-year-old Aria Chesler as she discovers her magic and tracking down the powerful foe responsible for kidnapping her parents. “It was a little bit challenging because I had never written a full-blown novel that actually made sense,” Karman said. “I started with characters and, after creating two characters, I had a dream about the storyline of ‘The Great Diviner’ series and then I just started writing it and let my imagination lead the rest of the way.” Karman’s journey into writing began around age 9. “I really, really, really wanted a horse, so I wrote a story about me having one,” Karman said. It was through writing about her desire to own a horse that Karman found a love for writing and sharing her writing with other people, sticking with the habit well into her teens. As time went on, her interest in writing combined with a love of worldbuilding, leading Karman to set her sights on writing a novel. The road to completing and bringing a novel to print was not an easy one. Karman wrote several novellas along the way which, in her words, were “very short” and “didn’t make much sense.” That even led her to stop writing for some time after she said she lost confidence in her writing. Finding an editor for “Meeting Twilight” was another challenge, as many of the editors she contacted were not interested in working

The Harrison Township Board of Trustees met on the evening of Aug. 28 to hear marijuana license extension appeals.

Marijuana appeals heard by board BY DEAN VAGLIA dvaglia@candgnews.com

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Five marijuana businesses in Harrison Township were brought before the Board of Trustees on Aug. 28, each one appealing various hurdles that would jeopardize their ability to renew operating licenses. “What the ordinance states is that, if a permit holder does not commence operations within two years of the issuance of the permit, the permit shall be forfeited,” said Township Clerk Adam Wit. “However, the permit holder may appeal to the township board for an extension beyond those two years for a showing of good cause. The ordinance also states that applicants for a permit must be current on their taxes and any other financial obligations to the township.” Among the five businesses that requested appeals, three have not begun operating while two failed to pay bills. The first brought before the board was Pure Garden, which has not opened since receiving its license. According to Trustee David Bratto, the company ran into supply chain delays when setting up its business and lacks a state license, but it has received high marks from township departments and has a certificate of occupancy. It did not take long for the board to approve Pure Garden’s appeal. Next up was Harrison Suite A, which was recently acquired

ing the Great Lakes Water Authority system, ending its role as the city’s water provider by joining the regional water network. In May, city commissioners applied for a $42 million grant to connect the city’s system to the GLWA’s. “Water rates are never fun, and with what is going on right now with our water plant, we know we have to plan for the future and we know that we’ve never had a sustainable capital improvement plan until now,”

Digital communications contract

Commissioners approved a contract with marketing agency Hunch Free to handle the city’s digital communications including social media management, digital ads, email campaign management and media outreach. Hunch Free will provide the city monthly re-

ports on social media metrics and other developments. Its current contract with the city is for six months at $3,650 a month. Aside from being based in Mount Clemens and handling communications for other Macomb County governments and organizations, its work with the Mount Clemens Downtown Development Authority over the past year impressed city officials. Prior to the contract, the city did not have a dedicated digital communications team to handle city communications through those channels.

Early voting resolution

Commissioners passed an early voting

resolution detailing how the 2022 voterenacted election extension will work in the city. Early voting for statewide and federal elections will last nine days, beginning on the second Saturday before Election Day through the Sunday before Election Day, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The city clerk will also have the authority to add any additional days, extend early voting hours and establish early voting for county and local elections, provided the changes are made with at least 48 hours of notice. All early in-person voting will take place at City Hall regardless of any voter’s precinct.

with a teenage writer. Finally, she was able to secure one. Publishing “Meeting Twilight” was a learning experience. Her mother, Heather, was also self-publishing, and Aaralynn learned a bit from her while finding out more about publishing on her own by reaching out to other authors through Instagram. Aaralynn ended up using Instagram as a key promotional tool for the book and series. “I started Instagram a little over a year ago,” Aaralynn said. “I started sharing about my book and then it took a little while to get going, but this year, it’s really taken off and a lot of people have become interested in the book.” With “Meeting Twilight” on the way and the second “Great Diviner” book written, Aaralynn has her eyes set on yearly releases through 2026. A fifth book is being considered, though the decision will be based on the length of the fourth book. Outside of the “Great Diviner” books, Aaralynn plans to release “Fun Guy the Mushroom Man,” a

TAP funding available

SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN — The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments recently announced approximately $2 million in funding awards for walking and biking projects in southeastern Michigan. SEMCOG has awarded $2,073,728 in Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funding for three projects for fiscal year 2025. This fall, SEMCOG will consider additional projects for 2025-2027. TAP projects are transportation-related improvements to roadways, local streets and corridors. They primarily address mobility options through new or enhanced bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. This includes pathways, bike lanes, sidewalks and pedestrian crossings. The projects are designed to improve the existing transportation system, while providing safe new options to help people connect to transit, regional trails and core service destinations. TAP can also fund green infrastructure projects that mitigate environmental concerns from the road network. SEMCOG’s Regional Review Committee is currently considering additional projects for future fiscal years. The next application deadlines are Oct. 11 of this year and Feb. 21, 2024. ESTATE SALES —

PLANNING, COMPASSION, AND WHAT TO EXPECT BY ALYSSA OCHSS aochss@candgnews.com

METRO DETROIT — A lot goes into estate sales, and in addition to the planning and pricing, compassion and understanding are also important. Ashley Rodgers, the owner of Green Eyes Estate Sales who runs the business with her husband, Christopher Rodgers, listed a number of steps to get an estate sale ready. The first thing people can expect is a consultation with the estate sale company to gauge their needs. Then comes organizing and evaluating the items, staging and showcasing, announcing the estate sale, and, finally, hosting the sale. Ashley Rodgers described the first few hours of an estate sale as a “madhouse.” For organizational purposes, her company, as well as other companies, hand out numbers to the customers first in line and only allow a certain number of people in at a time. Chris Deneau, the owner of Clearview

Estate Sales, said every estate sale they host is completely different. People can be out of town, in town, have multiple family members involved and host of other scenarios. His company takes 35% of the profits, and he said they usually can get set up in a couple of days in a standard household. “We have been running into less and less standard households in the last couple of years and more hoarding situations, it seems,” Deneau said. How long it takes also depends on the estate. They’ve done estate sales that take a couple of days and also ones that take two to three weeks, Deneau said. It takes a while, Rodgers said, to price the items in the estate. Her company uses professionals to appraise everything. “Our pricing is based on careful research, years of experience and knowledge of the Detroit metro area market,” Rodgers said in an email. “Pricing is also a practice of knowing what current trends in home decor See ESTATE SALES on page 15A

BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com

ROYAL OAK — “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” The quote was once popularized in the film and book “Moneyball,” but it was in living color on Aug. 20 at Bowlero Lanes in Royal Oak.

The Kirk Gibson Foundation hosted its first “Strike Out Parkinson’s” event to commemorate the 1984 Detroit Tigers and their journey to a World Series victory over the San Diego Padres. As legendary Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell and righthander Dave Rozema answered questions alongside Gibson, a familiar foe was in attendance to make sure that the Padres were represented.

“I don’t even know what I’m doing here,” Rich “Goose” Gossage said. “I don’t like the guy, but there it is. I don’t know what else to say.” The Hall of Famer and flame-throwing right hander usually got the better of Gibson, as Gibson went 1-for-13 with eight strikeouts throughout his career against Gossage in the regular season, but it was Gibson’s home run off GosSee GIBSON on page 12A

sage in Game 5 of the 1984 World Series that was the topic of conversation throughout the night. That’s the romanticism and camaraderie of baseball — how one pitch, one swing and one home run could have such a profound impact that the pair meeting up again nearly 40 years later could draw so much attention. “The game is over and we’re done, but to have this and start this, it gives him something else to focus on than his health conditions and his health issues that he’s had with Parkinson’s,” Gossage said. “It’s great to be here with him and for him, and to see such a great turnout. It’s awesome.” As attendees bowled to start the night and enjoyed food and conversation, the attention shifted to the video board as the journey to the 1984 World Series was displayed, showing a buildup of draft picks and even the infamous Rozema karate kick against the Minnesota Twins in 1982 during a bench-clearing brawl, which drew laughter from the crowd. Afterward, the ’84 World Series panel took the stage as Gossage, Gibson, Trammell and Rozema discussed the famous at-bat between Gossage and Gibson, the Tigers clubhouse in 1984 and everything in between. “Obviously, we get to reminisce and we get to talk about the old times, and that never gets old, but this is life and death stuff here and to raise funds and to make people more aware of Parkinson’s, or what Gibby calls ‘Parky,’” Trammell said. “They broke the mold with Kirk Gibson, and I mean that in a complimentary fashion. He’s a heck of a man and a good friend.” To follow up the bowling event, the Kirk Gibson Foundation hosted its seventh annual Kirk Gibson Golf Classic Aug. 21 at Wyndgate Country Club in Rochester Hills to raise money to fight Parkinson’s, and the ’84 Tigers brought in some reinforcements to get the job done. As Gossage, Trammell and Rozema shared laughs near their respective golf carts before the outing, legendary Tigers catcher Lance Parrish joined in on the reunion to support his teammate.

“This is a big deal to him, and it’s a big deal to anyone who has somebody that suffers from Parkinson’s or has a family member,” Parrish said. “It’s all in an effort, just like every charity event, to try to find a cure, and we’re hoping the little bit that we can all do to help in that regard is leading towards that direction.” While finding a cure is definitely at the top of the list, there was much conversation surrounding the Kirk Gibson Foundation’s center for Parkinson’s that is currently in the development stages. Putting heavy emphasis on achieving major progress in 2023, the Kirk Gibson Foundation’s managing director, Steve Annear, said the foundation is hoping to open the doors of the center to the Parkinson’s community within the next two years. “It’s been amazing,” Annear said. “I think so far this

year we’ve exceeded our own expectations of what we could do. The result of that means we’ll be able to more directly impact people that are living with Parkinson’s through the programs that we support and opening up our own center, which will be the Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson’s, where people will be able to come and get all these exercises and activity-based programs for free, so that’s kind of the centerpiece of what we’re doing here and we’re really excited about it.” The center will be home to a multitude of activitybased programs that the Kirk Gibson Foundation funds, including yoga, tai chi, bicycling, spin classes, breathing exercises, strength and weight training classes, dance classes, and many more. The center also will provide a support program to family members of people fighting Parkinson’s to help them cope and assist their loved ones. Don’t think of it in the context of a medical center, but rather as a sanctuary for people fighting Parkinson’s to walk in and feel like they’re at home. “We want it to feel like a community where people with Parkinson’s walk through the doors and feel fantastic about being there and feel normal that they’re there, and the kind of relationships you build and the camaraderie and friendships you build in that center are very, very important to people’s mental health,” Annear said. With one more event this year on the schedule with the 2023 Detroit Free Press Marathon, the foundation’s attention and efforts are still locked onto this year. Regardless, it’s difficult to ignore the prominence of the 2024 year being the 40th anniversary of the 1984 World Series, and the foundation’s chief operating officer, Michelle Newman, said the foundation expects to honor that anniversary with something special in 2024, “Next year is the 40th anniversary of the ’84 home run, so we’d like to plan something to commemorate that,” Newman said. and “Air” statue scenes, the first two boulders in the War in Words, and the installation of “Joe” on the war front portion of the “Land” scene. President of the WWII Legacy Memorial John Maten said that if he could summarize the installation in one word, it would be “connection.” “How does this memorial help us do that? The statue of a soldier reading a letter from home in the memorial exemplifies this in many ways. Those letters were the instruments that allowed the soldiers and the family to stay connected as best they could,” he said. He also pointed out a quote on the statue from Cpl. Aarol W. “Bud” Irish, of Hemlock, that in part reads, “I can’t even start to explain how much the letter means over here. Just keep the letters coming and I’ll do the rest.” Future work planned for the memorial includes a goal to raise $300,000 to build the Wall of Stars, which would honor the 15,458 Michigan lives lost during World War II. Maten noted the statue of a soldier reading a letter was modeled after the father of the sculptor, Larry Halbert, and that there are plans to make another scene a ways from the statue that would represent the parents of that soldier. “The reason we put it (away from the statue) is to represent the distance between the homefront and the war front, and that continuous connection that they had by way of their letters,” he said. “Another connection it makes is across the generations. As we lay down these paver bricks, we read the stories of the greatest generation. As we watch people find the bricks of loved ones, we see the emotions well and a memory come to

life. You don’t even have to know the person to feel a connection to them.” Helping celebrate the dedication were two veterans of World War II, Art Fishman and Frances Masters. Fishman, a Navy veteran, remembered standing in the park 10 years ago when he was first told about the plans to create a memorial. He said he’s been able to see the national World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and that his next goal was to live long enough to see this memorial. “As you walk through these bricks, you’re walking with the Greatest Generation,” he said. Masters was a Rosie the Riveter at the Willow Run bomber plant, which she joined right after high school. Her two brothers and future husband also served in the war. She noted that her husband served in Iwo Jima and her oldest brother was in the Battle of the Bulge, though he sadly didn’t come back home. “I did my job riveting airplanes. … I lost about 10 pounds and gained 20 of muscle,” she said. “I did that throughout the war and I would do it again. I have no regrets.” Mark Reed, a member of both the Marines and Navy who served in Desert Storm, was taking in the memorial and Walk of Honor. He said the memorial was “long overdue.” “I’m particularly interested in seeing that there are a lot of different things represented here,” he said. “It’s not simply the Army, Navy, Marines, whatever, but there’s a lot of civic organizations that are represented here as well, and a lot of civilian folks that contributed to the war effort in World War II as well — you know, the Rosie the Riveters and the people that worked in the automotive industry. You’ll see bricks commemorating them too. So it’s a good, long overdue memorial.”

by JARS Cannabis. The Harrison Township Fire Department noted two minor deficiencies with the property but did not object to its continued possession of a license. Trustees followed suit and approved the extension. “I think there were some minor issues with weather stripping on a door, if I recall,” Township Supervisor Ken Verkest said. “But again, we’re talking about a location that’s substantially completed and recently sold to what I would consider to be a significant business in the cannabis industry with JARS. You’d like to think that, if this company were willing to invest in this location, it’s probably worthwhile to give them that year’s opportunity to see where they might end up.” Hazel Park Growth followed, which came to the board in a less-encouraging state. A report from the building department states construction at the site was halted and maintenance has ceased with the department tak-

and decorating are popular.” Both Rodgers and Deneau said it depends on the family when it comes to what happens to the items that aren’t sold. “Our cleanout process includes selling items as a lot or bundle for deep discounts, donating leftover items to charity, utilizing refuse disposal services and sometimes even having free days,” Rodgers said in an email. Deneau said his company works with Grace Centers of Hope to donate items not sold. “There’s certain things that Grace Centers of Hope won’t take,” Deneau said. “So we really focus hard during the estate sale utilizing Facebook Marketplace, utilizing Craigslist, utilizing specialty groups to try and get rid of items that may not be donatable after the sale.” Both Rodgers and Deneau said there does need to be empathy and compassion when getting ready for an estate sale. Rodgers said an estate sale doesn’t necessarily happen because a loved one dies; it can be for any number of reasons. Deneau said he’s signed contracts with a 90-year-old going into assisted living and a 21-year-old

ing action to enforce cleanup at the site and the renewal of expired building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits. For the board to approve its appeal, it would need to explain why the work stopped and what the future of the site would be. Ali Moslemani, owner of Hazel Park Growth, told the board he got in contact with the Building Department and contractor to get the permits renewed and the site cleaned up. He is also in talks with a company around the Lansing area about a merger. The explanation worked for trustees, and Hazel Park Growth got its extension. Pure Roots and Tango Jack (SSQ Industries) both came before the board with financial issues. Pure Roots was flagged for unpaid water and property taxes, while Tango Jack had only unpaid water bills. Both were approved for extensions.

Contract extension

Trustees also approved a four-year contract extension for Township Financial Director Nicol Giebas for $117,000 on Aug. 28.

who lost her parents. “You have a lot of people that can deal with the situation, but you have a lot of people that you really need to be kind to and you need to walk them through the process very slowly or else they won’t make it through the process,” Deneau said. They also both said they have dealt with difficult customers who come to estate sales. Rodgers has security at their sales. “My company is run by myself and my husband, who is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL,” Rodgers said in the email. She said he “is in charge of security at every sale, and our dedicated staff members all work together to keep everyone safe and shopping happily.” People looking to host estate sales should be diligent about looking at reviews for a company, and they have to be careful of who they hire. “But you need to be very diligent about your Google and your Yelp reviews,” Deneau said. “Because you can very, very easily hire a company that can take advantage of you.” To get an estate sale started, Deneau said, people should take out anything they want to keep and then call an estate sale company. “You really don’t have to lift another finger other than taking the stuff out that you want,” Deneau said.
