Shelby celebrates completion of first phase of improvements at Heritage Lake BY KARA SZYMANSKI kszymanski@candgnews.com
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Shelby Township recently celebrated its ribbon-cutting for the Heritage Lake Phase 1 project. On Aug. 24, Shelby Township held the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the completion of Heritage Lake Phase 1 at the Shelby Township Municipal Campus, located at 52700 Van Dyke Ave. This phase installed three new docks. In addition to the new docks, the project phase included pergolas, a new fountain placed in the lake and improved fencing. An expanded 40-foot fishing pier along the lake’s edge, near the Heritage Lake Pavilion, is a premier spot for fishing. “One of these docks extends into the lake from the pathway leading to Mae Stecker Park on the lake’s western edge. The other docks, strategically positioned near the entrance of Heritage Gardens, activates a previously under-

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Stevenson High School senior Andrew Bogusz, from Shelby Township, won the Must See Racing Bob Frey Classic Midwest Lights 30-lap feature event Aug. 19 at Lorain Raceway Park in South Amherst, Ohio. After taking the lead early in the race and then fending off three restarts late in the race, Bogusz took the checkered flag. In second was Cody Gallogly, the Midwest Lights defending champion. The Bob Frey Classic is one of the biggest events of the year for Must See Racing. The Jerry Caryer Memorial 40 was the headlining race, and the Midwest Lights feature was the undercard. Frey, originally from Elyria, Ohio, was a five-time Little 500 champion who got his start in 1972. Caryer was a regular Must See Racing

Halloween party fundraiser aims to unite veterans with service dogs Every two years for the last 12, Cathryn Scalabrino Tamou has rallied supporters to accomplish a noble mission. “This is my sixth fundraiser that I do for Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs,” Tamou said. This year’s Halloween Bash fundraiser is set for Saturday, Oct. 21, with the generous support of Albert Hakim at the Premier Events Center in Clinton Township. Hakin graciously hosts the event at that venue, so the fundraiser’s monetary goals can be reached. “It’s a party with a purpose,” Tamou said. “We have a huge following of people that come to this.” Tamou, an Associate Broker with Keller Williams Lakeside, got involved with Guardian Angels
through her membership in the Grosse Pointe Board of Realtors. In 2019, the money raised through the party was combined with funds from the board to get a veteran a dog. Two years later, the party had grown so big that it alone raised enough money to provide a dog for another veteran. “These dogs are about $27,000,” Tamou said.
“In 2021, we raised enough funds to support a veteran with a service dog, and I was able to name that dog.” The German shepherd was named Shelby, after Shelby Township, where Tamou lives.
DATE: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2023
Tamou cited statistics that underscore the need to provide support and comfort for those who volunteer to protect us all through military service. “There are 80 veterans a day who commit suicide. Eighty,” she said. “You just don’t know the lives you touch when you do this. We have recipients who come to the event. Their stories are just incredible.” Tamou said the event has continued to grow, as tickets sell out with around 200 people in attendance. Tickets for the 2023 Halloween Bash costume party are $99 per person. That includes a full dinner and an open premium bar. There will be dancing and a DJ from Detroit’s Channel 955 radio, and raffles, including a 50/50. competitor who passed away in 2020 the night before he was scheduled to compete at an event. Bogusz said via email he really had to put in some work to get the win. “I had to fight for it to win at a track that wasn’t in the state I live in. That win shows a comeback from what happened to us earlier in the year at Birch Run Speedway with a mechanical issue forcing us to withdraw the car from the event,” he said. He said he would like to thank all those who made this win possible for him. “(I) have to thank my dad for all his hard work giving me a very (good) car, Ed-
die Sachs for his guidance and all the sponsors who support my racing: Motor City Pawn Brokers, Lucido and Manzella attorneys at law, U. S. A. Plumbing, Leslie Tire Service, Pit Stop Graphics, Jax Wax of Michigan, RAM Engineering MIDWEST, DRIVEN racing oil, Ron Carter Autoland Fleet Group, Villa Penna Banquets, Superior Radiator, and Jomar Performance.” Sachs, the principal owner at Eddie Sachs Racing and Driver Development, said Bogusz did a great job. “For a track that Andrew does not like, he drove his butt off to get the win. Took the lead on lap 3 and checked out to a half track lead before a late race caution at lap 19 bunched the field. Held off the field on double file restart to cross the line 1st. Great effort by the driver and team,” he said via email.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — An officer in the area of Ryan and 22 Mile Roads observed a vehicle travelling 70 mph in a 45 mph zone at 12:09 a.m. Aug. 11. The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. Upon talking to the driver, the officer could smell the odor of intoxicants on him. The officer asked the driver if he drank any alcoholic beverages that night, and the driver reportedly stated, “a little bit.” The officer then had the driver exit his vehicle to perform field sobriety tests. Once the field sobriety tests were completed, the driver was offered a preliminary breath test. The driver agreed to take the PBT, and the results reportedly were 0.10% blood alcohol content. The driver was then placed under arrest for operating while intoxicated and was transported to the Police Department for processing.

suspect enter the store and fill up a shopping basket with electric toothbrushes. The suspect then exited the store without paying for any of the toothbrushes. The suspect entered a Jeep in the parking lot and left. The total value of the stolen items is more than $600. The Shelby Township Police Department’s detective bureau was investigating the case.
and punched the delivery person in the head, knocking him to the ground. The suspect then stole the bag of cannabis and took off running, according to the report. The detective bureau was investigating the case.
Resident scammed out of thousands
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Officers were dispatched to the 4000 block of Snoal Lane, near 25 Mile and Shelby roads, for an attempted stolen vehicle report at 12:15 p.m. Aug. 20. The caller stated that he had parked his vehicle in his driveway overnight. The next morning, when he entered his vehicle, he noticed that the gear shifter and wires had been tampered with, and he believed that someone had tried to steal the vehicle. The resident said that his computer had frozen up earlier in the day. He then received a message to call a phone number claiming to be Microsoft tech support. When the man called the number, he was instructed to withdraw money from his bank account and go to a local gas station to buy bitcoin from an Athena Bitcoin machine using a QR code that the suspects sent to the man. When the man told his family what had happened, they informed him that he had been scammed and to file a police report. The detective bureau was investigating the case.

The reporting party stated that he was selling shoes on Facebook Marketplace and agreed to meet the buyer of the shoes at this location. Customer steals TV, pepper sprays employee
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Officers were dispatched to Walmart, 51450 Shelby Parkway, on a retail fraud and assault report at 1:27 p.m. Aug. 20. Upon arrival, officers spoke with an employee who had witnessed
a female suspect exiting the store with a TV at the patio and garden entrance. When the employee asked the suspect if she needed any help, the suspect responded “no.” The suspect then proceeded to walk out the garden exit without paying for the TV, which sett off alarms. The employee then called her supervisor to notify her supervisor of the situation, at which point the suspect ran up to the employee and sprayed her with pepper spray. The suspect then loaded the television into a waiting vehicle and fled the scene prior to police arrival. The detective bureau was investigating.
Driver hits fire hydrant, found with drugs
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 9:23 a.m. Aug. 18, officers observed a disabled vehicle in the roadway on Jewell Road, north of 25 Mile Road. Upon stopping to assist the driver, a police officer observed that the driver was sleeping. The driver reportedly had his seat laid back with his feet up on the steering wheel. After banging on the window several times, the officers were able to wake up the driver. It also appeared to the officers that the driver had struck a nearby fire hydrant with his vehicle, which caused the driver to suffer a head injury. Upon talking to the driver, officers observed his eyes to be glossy and bloodshot, and his speech was slurred. Several pills, along with marijuana, were found inside the vehicle, police said. The driver was arrested for suspicion of operating under the influence of drugs, and a search warrant was completed to draw blood to determine if any drugs or alcohol were in his system. The Fire Department transported the driver to a local hospital due to his head injury. — Kara Szymanski

PHRAGMITES TREATMENT BEGINS IN EARLY SEPTEMBER
MACOMB COUNTY — The Lake St. Clair Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area and the Macomb County Department of Roads will work with a contractor to perform phragmites treatment sprays along Macomb County roads starting after Labor Day. “This is an important public safety issue as road right of ways often provide conditions and environments for phragmites to grow,” Department of Roads Director Bryan Santo said in a statement. “The presence of the invasive species creates a visual impairment for drivers, reduces drainage, and damages pavement since it has the ability to grow through paved roads.” Funding for the spraying comes from the Department of Roads and the communities where sprays will take place. Sprays will occur in Clinton Township, Harrison Township, Ray Township, Shelby Township, Sterling Heights and Washington Township. The department sees the invasive species as a threat to both drivers and infrastructure. The plants grow 20 feet in height in ditches and shoulders.

“After high school, I attended Western Michigan University where I studied advertising and theater. As much as I wanted to continue theater, I was introduced to women’s rugby, and ended up playing the entire four years I lived in Kalamazoo. (Maybe that was getting me geared up and ready for the unknown world of stunts),” she said in an email interview. After graduating from WMU, she headed to Chicago and became an intern at a casting agency, David O’Connor Casting. “I also started taking improvisation classes at Second City. After a few years in Chicago, I packed up whatever could fit in my Dodge Neon and drove west to Hollywood. I told my parents I had a job, but the fact was, I did not have a job, and I didn’t know anybody,” she said. According to a Utica Community Schools press release, Holden, who is a mother of two, has been happy to spend some time back in Michigan while filming a sequel film called “#momlife Part 2.” The first film, “#momlife,” can be found on YouTube. According to her filmography at the Internet Movie Database, Holden has performed stunts in such well-known television programs and movies as “General Hospital,” “NCIS: New Orleans,” “Venom,” “Thor: Love and Thunder,” “The Rookie” and “Chicago Fire.” In her career, Holden has performed countless on-screen deaths. “Every job I get, I’m a different person, telling a different story,” Holden said in the press release. “I get to work with the best of the best in Hollywood, creating action and helping the actors look good.” She has played many different types of parts. “I’ve played everything from a bloodied
bride, an old woman, an ugly zombie to a fairy princess, a spy and a 12-year-old hockey player,” Holden stated in the release. Stunt coordinator Kent Luttrell said he first worked with Holden on the Amazon Prime series “Hunters,” which starred Al Pacino. “Sara doubled Kate Mulvany for me and was a consummate professional on and off set. A talented stuntwoman and always available on set to help wherever she could,” Luttrell said via email. Luttrell complimented Holden’s professionalism and said the experience led him to hire her for several other shows. “In fact I call her for all manner of work, car work, fights, falls, or just a hand to have on set I can trust to do what needs to be done. That means a lot to a stunt coordinator, not having to be concerned with her ability, conduct, or professionalism. I can always count on Sara,” Luttrell said. Holden said her favorite part of her job is the unknown. She said that young people interested in stunts or acting will need to have thick skin and be ready for opportunities. “When I moved to Los Angeles, I was only focused on acting,” Holden said in the release. “I was working on a film and ended up meeting the Stunt Coordinator who introduced me to the stunt world after talking for hours.” Pursuing a career in stunts or acting also takes time and patience. “Knowing how to take rejection is key and understanding that it most likely wasn’t you or your performance that didn’t get you the part. Casting just went another direction,” Holden said via email. “Just hang in there, you’ll get the next one! Hollywood is not a business for the faint hearted. Just hone your skills, keep your chops up and be ready for any opportunity that comes your way,” she said. Call Staff Writer Kara Szymanski at (586) 498-1029.

Sara Katsavrias, the president of the Shelby Township Fine Art Society, who took third place, said the society members had a great two days at the Shelby Township Art Fair. “There were over 3,000 fairgoers casting

ROYAL OAK — “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” The quote was once popularized in the film and book “Moneyball,” but it was in living color on Aug. 20 at Bowlero Lanes in Royal Oak.
WHEN PASSION MEETS BRILLIANCE
The Kirk Gibson Foundation hosted its first “Strike Out Parkinson’s” event to commemorate the 1984 Detroit Tigers and their journey to a World Series victory over the San Diego Padres. As legendary Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell and righthander Dave Rozema answered questions alongside Gibson, a familiar foe was in attendance to make sure that the Padres were represented.

“I don’t even know what I’m doing here,” Rich “Goose” Gossage said. “I don’t like the guy, but there it is. I don’t know what else to say.” The Hall of Famer and flame-throwing right hander usually got the better of Gibson, as Gibson went 1-for-13 with eight strikeouts throughout his career against Gossage in the regular season, but it was Gibson’s home run off GosSee GIBSON on page 16A
Find inspired fine jewelry for women and men at Brooke & Co. Brooke & Co. Fine Jewelry is not your average jewelry retailer. “We do very unique things. We’re not your typical mom-and-pop store,” said Pierre Nahed, the owner of Brooke & Co. “We offer one-of-a-kind designs. We specialize in custom jewelry of all sorts.” That includes bridal jewelry and gifts, and a full line of silver, gold and platinum jewelry for women, and also for men, who represent a market that is somewhat underserved, at least in our area. “What got me into the business was I couldn’t find anything for myself,” Nahed said. “It’s unbelievable. I happened to be overseas, in Italy, and saw some things. I said, ‘I’m going to go back and open a jewelry store.’” Nahed said over the years, Brooke & Co. has attracted customers, both men and women, drawn to the variety and quality of the store’s jewelry, and the level of customer service they provide.
“We’re old school. We treat people literally like they’re family,” Nahed said. “Customer service is our No. 1 goal, and our products are superb.” While some stores sacrifice selling quality for larger profits, Brooke & Co. is just the opposite, and it shows in the reviews expressed by customers on Google. “We want to give you quality. We’re going to give you a much better piece of jewelry than you can get at a mall store,” Nahed said. Shopping in person for that perfect piece of jewelry, as opposed to online shopping, has its clear advantages. “The best thing about going into the store is you get to try the piece on,” Nahed said. Community Choice Credit Union Lighten the squeeze on your wallet with these household finance tips If high interest-rates and inflation are affecting your household budget, you are not alone. While rising interest-rates have moderated some inflation pressures, chances are you are feeling some pain in your pocketbook. After all, the full-fledged impact of two years of inflation is hitting most consumers hard now, reducing their savings, eliminating large percentages of their disposable income and making it more difficult to pay off debt. This is having an impact on your disposable income. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis confirms that the seasonally adjusted annual rate of personal saving dipped to 4.6 percent in February. That’s well below the average annual rate of more than 8 percent, which has been tracked since 1959. In June 2022, the rate had dipped to 2.7 percent, a 15-year low. Whether wallet pressure is an ongoing concern, or you’re simply looking to increase cash flow and save money, the good news is that high interest rates do not need to be a detriment
to meeting your goals. Increasing cash flow can help relieve that wallet pressure. So how can you increase cash flow during times of rising prices?

Briarwood Heating & Cooling: Keeping Homes Comfortable No Matter The Season For 25 years, Briarwood Heating & Cooling has been a trusted name in the industry, consistently ensuring homes throughout Macomb and Oakland counties remain comfortable through both freezing winters and sweltering summers. At the helm are husband-and-wife co-owners, Lee and Renee Deel, their son, Luke, several other dedicated family members and loyal staff members who ensure top-quality service. “Every technician has been with us a minimum of five years,” Lee said. “They’ve also been trained organically from the start right
here at Briarwood.” What else sets the company apart? Their unrivalled expertise, and a reputation for prioritizing customer satisfaction, as solidified by a stellar 4.8-star rating on Google Reviews. Customers have said: “The Deel family offers the best reliable, honest, quick and fair priced service,” and “Had a working furnace at a fair price within two hours of my call.” Staying ahead of the Michigan winter is crucial, and Briarwood has everything customers need to ensure their system is operating at peak performance.
“We recommend scheduling a furnace clean and check for the season, which ensures filters are clean, the unit is safe, without carbon monoxide leaks, and running efficiently so it’s not increasing your energy costs,” Renee said. For $69.95, the service also covers checking both the humidifier and water heater. Additionally, as one of the few licensed companies in the area specializing in boilers, the company offers boiler clean and check services for $79.95. “We stand by our products,” Renee said. “If an issue arises, we prioritize a swift reso-
lution and do our best to provide same-day service.” Lee added: “This level of responsiveness distinctly sets us apart because many competitors might only schedule service for the following week.” Customers are invited to visit Briarwood’s showroom featuring a variety of heating and cooling equipment, including hot water heaters, air conditioners, furnaces, filters and humidifier pads — as well as essential parts for those keen on DIY repairs. sage in Game 5 of the 1984 World Series that was the topic of conversation throughout the night. That’s the romanticism and camaraderie of baseball — how one pitch, one swing and one home run could have such a profound impact that the pair meeting up again nearly 40 years later could draw so much attention. “The game is over and we’re done, but to have this and start this, it gives him something else to focus on than his health conditions and his health issues that he’s had with Parkinson’s,” Gossage said. “It’s great to be here with him and for him, and to see such a great turnout. It’s awesome.” As attendees bowled to start the night and enjoyed food and conversation, the attention shifted to the video board as the journey to the 1984 World Series was displayed, showing a buildup of draft picks and even the infamous Rozema karate kick against the Minnesota Twins in 1982 during a benchclearing brawl, which drew laughter from the crowd. Afterward, the ’84 World Series panel took the stage as Gossage, Gibson, Trammell and Rozema discussed the famous at-bat be-
tween Gossage and Gibson, the Tigers clubhouse in 1984 and everything in between. “Obviously, we get to reminisce and we get to talk about the old times, and that never gets old, but this is life and death stuff here and to raise funds and to make people more aware of Parkinson’s, or what Gibby calls ‘Parky,’” Trammell said. “They broke the mold with Kirk Gibson, and I mean that in a complimentary fashion. He’s a heck of a man and a good friend.” To follow up the bowling event, the Kirk Gibson Foundation hosted its seventh annual Kirk Gibson Golf Classic Aug. 21 at Wyndgate Country Club in Rochester Hills to raise money to fight Parkinson’s, and the ’84 Tigers brought in some reinforcements to get the job done. As Gossage, Trammell and Rozema shared laughs near their respective golf carts before the outing, legendary Tigers catcher Lance Parrish joined in on the reunion to support his teammate. “This is a big deal to him, and it’s a big deal to anyone who has somebody that suffers from Parkinson’s or has a family member,” Parrish said. “It’s all in an effort, just like every charity event, to try to find a cure, and we’re hoping the little bit that we can all do to help in that regard is leading towards that direction.”
While finding a cure is definitely at the top of the list, there was much conversation surrounding the Kirk Gibson Foundation’s center for Parkinson’s that is currently in the development stages. Putting heavy emphasis on achieving major progress in 2023, the Kirk Gibson Foundation’s managing director, Steve Annear, said the foundation is hoping to open the doors of the center to the Parkinson’s community within the next two years. “It’s been amazing,” Annear said. “I think so far this year we’ve exceeded our own expectations of what we could do. The result of that means we’ll be able to more directly impact people that are living with Parkinson’s through the programs that we support and opening up our own center, which will be the Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson’s, where people will be able to come and get all these exercises and activity-based programs for free, so that’s kind of the centerpiece of what we’re doing here and we’re really excited about it.” The center will be home to a multitude of activity-based programs that the Kirk Gibson Foundation funds, including yoga, tai chi, bicycling, spin classes, breathing exercises, strength and weight training classes, dance classes, and many more. The center also will provide a support program to family members of people fight-
ing Parkinson’s to help them cope and assist their loved ones. Don’t think of it in the context of a medical center, but rather as a sanctuary for people fighting Parkinson’s to walk in and feel like they’re at home. “We want it to feel like a community where people with Parkinson’s walk through the doors and feel fantastic about being there and feel normal that they’re there, and the kind of relationships you build and the camaraderie and friendships you build in that center are very, very important to people’s mental health,” Annear said. With one more event this year on the schedule with the 2023 Detroit Free Press Marathon, the foundation’s attention and efforts are still locked onto this year. Regardless, it’s difficult to ignore the prominence of the 2024 year being the 40th anniversary of the 1984 World Series, and the foundation’s chief operating officer, Michelle Newman, said the foundation expects to honor that anniversary with something special in 2024, “Next year is the 40th anniversary of the ’84 home run, so we’d like to plan something to commemorate that,” Newman said. For more information on the Kirk Gibson Foundation, visit www.kirkgibsonfoun dation.org.

The pergolas are placed along the walking path and new fencing makes the area safer, according to the township. The new fountain, the second one in the lake, lights up after dark, as does the first fountain. The Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved the project at its June 21, 2022, meeting with a budget of up to $695,092 using funds from the township’s federal American Recovery Plan Act allotment. Wing Construction, of Shelby Township, completed the phase within budget, according to the township. Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis helped commemorate the completion of the first phase. “This milestone underscores our shared vision of progress and unity, and I appreciate Clerk Stanley Grot’s commitment to making this happen,” he said in a press release. Grot reportedly was inspired to add the fishing piers after seeing two boys fishing from the lake’s muddy banks. Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Di-
rector Joe Youngblood commented on the project. “Heritage Garden is the most popular park we have in Shelby Township. This is a nice project headed up by the Township Clerk and will get even more use,” he said in an email. Mike Adams, the Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department’s sports supervisor, said that this project will make events at the park even better and give people more to enjoy. “Just when we thought our Parks and Rec Fishing Derby event and Halloween Spooktacular couldn’t get any bigger and better we now have the three new beautiful docks that will make these events bigger and better,” Adams said via email. The plans for Heritage Lake Phase 2 include a gazebo, improved lighting and a rejuvenation of the walking path, according to the township. Phase 2 has an estimated budget of $1.25 million.

the risk of burns, and the area around the fireplace should be clear of anything that’s potentially flammable — including drapes, blankets, baskets, books and other decorative items. “You want to make sure the area is clear of anything that can burn,” McKelvey explained. Once you’ve gotten your fire roaring, remember to never leave it unattended and also make sure it’s completely out before going to bed or leaving the house. “And it’s always a good time to check your fire extinguisher in your house to make sure it’s ready in the event that you would need it,” Cieslik said. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that fireplaces and chimneys are involved in an average of 15,800 fires per year, resulting in an average of 20 deaths and 50 injuries annually from 2017 to 2019. Fire officials say dangerous home blazes can be prevented with a simple tool — a fire alarm. “We always want people to test their smoke alarms and remember to replace their batteries,” Cieslik said. Three out of every five home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms, according to the National Fire Protection Association. So it’s very important that you have smoke alarms — with the label of a reputable testing agency, like Underwriters Laboratories — in every bedroom and in the common areas on each floor of your home. All smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years or sooner if they don’t respond properly when tested. When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead. Anything that burns fuel, such as a gas fireplace, can potentially become a source of carbon monoxide — an invisible, odorless gas that can kill — so fire officials say homeowners should also make sure to have CO detectors in their homes. CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each bedroom and on every level of the home. Just like smoke alarms, homeowners are advised to change the batteries, test and interconnect their carbon monoxide detectors, if possible, and make sure the vents See FIREPLACE on page 22A

METRO DETROIT — Autumn’s cool, crisp air is around the corner, which means many homeowners will soon want to cozy up by their fireplaces. But before you decide to spark a fire, local fire experts have a few safety tips to keep in mind. Fireplaces are often neglected when it comes to maintenance, so experts say it’s important to have a licensed chimney specialist inspect your fireplace each year. “You always want to make sure that your chimney is inspected — and cleaned, if necessary — by a qualified professional,” said Susan McKelvey, communications manager for the National Fire Protection Association. “Obviously, it’s best if that is done before the start of the heating season.” Inspections can assure there are no cracks or dislodged bricks that need to be repaired, and they can check for animal nests or other blockages that could prevent smoke from escaping. Cleanings will help get rid of built-up soot and creosote — a tarlike substance that’s a byproduct of wood fires — that can spark a dangerous chimney fire. Homeowners with gas-powered fireplaces should also hire a professional to check for hazards, such as leaks in the gas line. Once you’re given the green light to use your fireplace, make sure you know how to open the flue, so smoke is drawn out of the house and clean air is drawn in. Cracking a window can also help with air quality. Experts say to burn nothing in the fireplace except dry firewood or Chimney Safety Institute of America-accepted manufactured logs and to clean out all ash from previous fires before lighting a new one. “You don’t want to burn other things, like trash, wrapping paper or newspaper because the byproduct of those burning materials can cause a buildup in the lining of your chimney, so you really just want to make sure that you put wood in your fireplace that’s designed for being burned,” McKelvey said. “And always remember not to overload your fireplace with wood,” Rochester Fire Chief John Cieslik added. “We don’t want someone to put so much wood in the fireplace that it would fall out, so you also need to make sure there are screens in the fireplace to keep sparks from flying. Although the mesmerizing glow of the flames can be enticing, children and pets should always be at least 3 feet away from the fireplace. A safety screen should be installed to reduce

for their gas appliances — like the fireplace, dryer, stove and furnace — are free and clear of snow or debris. Cieslik also encourages the public to conduct a fire inspection within the home this fall, checking and replacing the batteries in their smoke detectors, going over the locations where they have multiple electrical devices plugged in and creating or updating the family’s emergency evacuation plan so everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire. He suggests sleeping with bedroom doors closed, which serves as a barrier from

which features cows, took second place. Allebone said she just had to make it because the cows are so cute. “Cows are so darn cute and fun to paint, they just make you smile! ‘Dairy Queens’ is an acrylic painting on a 16x20 wrapped canvas,” she said. “Ginger Girls Rule,” by Karen Ann, won first place. “I painted ‘Ginger Girls Rule’ because she makes me smile, and I love her spirit! I hope she will bring a smile to your face also!” Ann said via email. The subject’s expression is a large part of why people smile at the painting. “I see her as fun loving, impish, independent, strong, a nature lover, and playful but also one who is able to be perfectly content being in her quiet place while planning and creating new adventures in her daydreams,” she said. their votes for their favorite painting. Seventy-five pieces of art were available to vote for or purchase, in all different mediums and subject matter. It was a great show. We love showing and sharing our art with the community; it helps them to get to know us a little better each year,” she said in an email. She was happy to have won third place with her flamingo painting. “I am delighted to have my ‘Three FlaMigos’ take third place, I had a lot of fun placing the colors and shapes on the canvas. It’s a happy painting I think and I hope the viewer has fun taking it in,” she said. The Shelby Township Fine Art Society welcomes all interested artists from Shelby Township and surrounding areas. “We meet once a month, on the second Wednesday, 6:30-9 p.m. We have a meeting, snacks, then a demonstrator from which our members have learned about several mediums and art techniques. We have three major shows a year. One of which is at the Shelby Township Art Fair, where any member can join in on the fun. We also show at Anton Art Center, Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea, and at our Activities Center,” she said. “Our club consists of many artists with different levels of talent and medium use. We are very lucky having this talent along with a really nice and friendly collection of artists,” she said. Joyce Kilpatrick was chosen for the honorable mention and said her piece was based on a sunset that she had seen. “‘Morning Light’ was inspired by a beautiful sunrise in Lake Orion. The sunlight reflecting on the snow created beautiful shadows and vibrant colors. I couldn’t wait to paint it after I took the photo,” she said. Bea Allebone’s piece, “Dairy Queens,”
