Quick action and CPR training made all the difference in rescuing a toddler who almost drowned in a Sterling Heights swimming pool in July. That’s what city officials concluded during their Aug. 1 meeting, when the City Council unanimously honored Sterling Heights police Officer Nathan Sears for assisting in the rescue. During the afternoon of July 9, Lane came to the rescue to help 2-year-old Renley Bell properly breathe again following the boy’s near drowning at a pool party. Police said they were called to the home after Renley’s father, Chuck Bell, found his son at the bottom of the pool. Then Chuck and Renley’s mother, Melanie LeBeau, worked together to perform CPR. According to police, this caused Renley to begin breathing shallowly, though the city added that he was still having difficulty doing so. When Sears came to the scene, he reportedly performed enough back blows to force the water out of Renley’s lungs so he could properly breathe. The Sterling Heights Fire Department also arrived to assist in Renley’s treatment and hospitalization. According to the city, Renley has since fully recovered. “What happened here in a backyard of Sterling Heights made it around the world,” Police Chief Dale Dwojakowski said, adding that the story made local, national and even international headlines in the United Kingdom. He explained that the video footage of the rescue was viewed 4 million times on the Police Department’s Facebook page, and he hopes it’ll remind people of the hazards posed by children being near bodies of water. During the ceremony, Chuck described what was going on prior to discovering that his son was in mortal danger.

‘OUR KIDS REALLY CAME TO PLAY’ STEVENSON BESTS NOVI 217 BEHIND DEFENSIVE SHOWING BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com’

All eyes were on Sterling Heights Stevenson football this year as they faced a tough road matchup against Novi High School Aug. 25. A program accustomed to winning and playing in the playoff lights fell short in 2022, and they were ready to show everyone just how dangerous they’re going to be this year. Behind sophomore quarterback Andrew Knight and a stacked defense, Stevenson routed Novi 21-7 to pick up a statement win to start the Titans’ season. Knight threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns while running back Alex DeLorey ran for 113 yards and a touchdown in the win, but the defense was the topic of conversation for Stevenson.

STEVENSON TO HOST INAUGURAL ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

SPORTS

BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com

For the first time in the school’s history, Sterling Heights Stevenson will announce its inaugural athletic hall of fame class for 2023 on Sept. 28 at Stevenson High School, sponsored by the Stevenson Athletic Boosters. The event is set to begin at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the ceremony taking place in the performing arts center inside Stevenson High School. It’s been a long time coming for a school with an abundance of athletic talent throughout its history, but Stevenson, which now plans to induct athletes/coaches each year, is pleased to bring their alumni athletes the acknowledgement they deserve. “We wanted to get alumni the recognition we deserve, and the need for the hall of fame was just long overdue,” said Bob Wathen, a member of the hall of fame planning committee. It was a strenuous task to narrow down the inductees to 10, but Stevenson’s 2023 athletic hall of fame carries some heavy hitters. For more information on the event,

Rick Bye: Coaching Stevenson football from 1975-2009, Bye led Stevenson to 16 Macomb Area Conference Championships, nine undefeated seasons, 10 regional championships, four state title games, and a career 268-94 record. Bye is currently in the Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame. Christy Goodison-O’Brien: A 1994 graduate from Stevenson, Goodison-O’Brien was a three-time Division 1 cross country state champion, four-time Division 1 track and field state champion in the 1600-meter, and two-time Division 1 track and field state champion in the 3200-meter.

visit eventbrite.com and search “Stevenson Athletic Hall of Fame” in the search bar. Adult tickets cost $10, while children ages 12 and younger are admitted for free. Stevenson is slated to induct the following athletes/coaches for the 2023 class: Rick Bye, Christy Goodison-O’Brien, Kevin Hanson, Joe Alls, Jeff McCool, Pete Chryplewicz, Jason Fracassa, Alyssa Huntley, Paul Longo and Daniel Jilek.

Kevin Hanson: Coaching Stevenson’s cross country team from 1982-2016 and also serving as the school’s boys/girls track and field coach, Hanson’s tenure at Stevenson included two cross country state championships, 16 Macomb Area Conference coach of the year honors, three Michigan track and field coach of the year honors, and being named to the Macomb County Coaches Hall of Fame. Joe Alls: A multi-sport athlete at Ste-

venson with football, baseball and track, Alls, a 1998 graduate, was dominant for the Titans football team as their lead running back. Rushing for 3,365 career rushing yards, Alls was a three-time all-County honoree, two-time all-MAC Red first team, MAC Red player of the year, and a dream team honoree before continuing his football career at Bowling Green University. Alls was also a Division 1 track and field state champion in long jump. Jeff McCool: A 1985 graduate, McCool earned two Macomb County player of the year honors in basketball, including three all-County honors and an all-State honor before continuing his basketball career at New Mexico State University. Pete Chryplewicz: A track and field and football star at Stevenson, the 1991 graduate was the top football recruit in the state in 1991. Chryplewicz was a dream team honoree for football, but was also a three-time all-State honoree in track and field as well. Chryplewicz played at the University of See HALL OF FAME on page 7A

Sears from page 3A

“The first part of the morning, he had his life vest on the entire time,” Chuck said. “The ice cream truck came down the street. We went out front and came back to eat ice cream on the deck. “He probably was not out of our sight for more than a minute or two. And there were even adults less than 3 feet away from him when I found him at the bottom of the pool.” Chuck praised Sears’ and the Fire Department’s quick timing for treating Renley. Sears said that, as an officer, “you never want to hear this call come out over the radio, but, fortunately, I was at the right place at the right time.” “I‘ll look back on this and be proud that I was able to help in any way I could for you guys,” Sears said. “And I commend both of you for doing CPR and recognizing this, and I’m glad Renley is here with us today.” During the ceremony, LeBeau advocated for the importance of CPR training, and especially for pool owners. Councilwoman Maria Schmidt, as a CPR instructor, agreed that the skill is important for everyone to know. Councilman

Henry Yanez, a former firefighter, said, “I can tell you, watching that video, as someone who’s done CPR on children, my palms instantly got sweaty just watching that.” “It just goes to show how important training is, whether you’re a uniformed officer, firefighter, police officer, whether you’re a regular citizen,” he added. Mayor Michael Taylor spoke from his own perspective as a parent and urged Renley’s parents to not listen to any criticism on social media. “Things happen quick, they happen fast, you get distracted, and people need to be more empathetic. They need to be more understanding,” Taylor said. “And so I wouldn’t pay attention to what any of those people say. The fact that you’re here right now telling this story is all I need to know about the character of you two, because that is an incredibly tough thing to go through.” In addition to the City Council honoring Sears with the resolution, Sterling Heights police Chief Dale Dwojakowski issued an SHPD Challenge Coin to Renley’s family. crete pipe, near Hayes Road, both in Sterling Heights. Officials said that the blockage was largely caused by a sinkhole in Fraser that took place on Christmas Eve in 2016, following the collapse of the interceptor beneath 15 Mile Road at Eberlein Drive. “Six thousand tons of this in our interceptor reduces the amount of capacity that we have for our sewage flow. It has to come out,” Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice S. Miller said in a press release. “It’s a big part of the project — a very important part.” The line runs from Sterling Heights, through Fraser and Clinton Township. Other sewer lines also flow into the Macomb Interceptor Drain, with the line ending at the Clintondale Pump Station, near the border of Clinton Township and Harrison Township. Vehicle access to all businesses where the work is being done will be maintained; 15 Mile Road is open to local traffic only between Utica and Hayes but is closed completely at Eberlein Drive. Access is being maintained to all homes in the area. The cost of the project is estimated at $37 million. The project was given priority because failing to address it could cause this major sewer line to collapse due to the blockage restricting sewage flow in the pipe.

Workers have thus far scooped and removed approximately 1,000 tons of sediment from the Macomb Interceptor Drain. Another 5,000 tons is still to be taken out from the pipe, which carries the sanitary sewage from almost 600,000 residents in 11 of Macomb County’s communities. To allow the removal, several days each week, sewage is temporarily held upstream to allow for sufficient space inside the pipe for the construction contractor to drive a bulldozer-like rig — known as a “skid-steer” — with a curved blade into the pipe and scoop the black, sandy debris from the pipe and into large bucket. Using a crane, that bucket is then slowly hoisted up through the new pump station that was built in the shaft and then dumped into a large roll-off dumpster. The presence of sediment was previously noted during inspections of the large pipe and therefore was not a surprise. In some areas, the sediment is 24-36 inches thick. Macomb County Commissioner Don VanSyckel, who serves on the Macomb Interceptor Drain Drainage District Board, said he was impressed by the construction project after getting a closeup look at the sediment removal process. “I’m just so glad to help serve on the MIDD Drain board and help to push this project along because it’s high time it gets done,” VanSyckel said in a press release. Whether you’re looking to work or play, Bourlier’s has what you need to take command of your yard or patio. “We’ve been on Utica Road at this location since 1978 and in business since 1948,” said Brian Bourlier, the third-generation owner of the family business. “We’re a power equipment dealership with a full line of products, including Toro and Stihl. We offer sales, parts and service on everything we sell,” Bourlier said. “We also carry a full line of outdoor grilling products, including Napoleon, Weber, Traeger, Big Green Egg and Green Mountain Grills.” Cooking demonstrations and the best pricing of the year will welcome guests to Bourlier’s one-day open house on Sept. 16,

They’ve got your money, and they’re done with you. I’m the exact opposite. I want to maintain your mower. I want to take care of you for 10 years.” With a well-stocked parts department and mechanics on staff who have been there for 35 and 40 years, Bourlier’s has invested in its employees and its inventory to meet the goal of total customer service satisfaction. “Everybody is factory-trained as well.

Briarwood Heating & Cooling: Keeping Homes Comfortable No Matter The Season For 25 years, Briarwood Heating & Cooling has been a trusted name in the industry, consistently ensuring homes throughout Macomb and Oakland counties remain comfortable through both freezing winters and sweltering summers. At the helm are husband-and-wife co-owners, Lee and Renee Deel, their son, Luke, several other dedicated family members and loyal staff members who ensure top-quality service. “Every technician has been with us a minimum of five years,” Lee said. “They’ve also been trained organically from the start right

here at Briarwood.” What else sets the company apart? Their unrivalled expertise, and a reputation for prioritizing customer satisfaction, as solidified by a stellar 4.8-star rating on Google Reviews. Customers have said: “The Deel family offers the best reliable, honest, quick and fair priced service,” and “Had a working furnace at a fair price within two hours of my call.” Staying ahead of the Michigan winter is crucial, and Briarwood has everything customers need to ensure their system is operating at peak performance.

“We recommend scheduling a furnace clean and check for the season, which ensures filters are clean, the unit is safe, without carbon monoxide leaks, and running efficiently so it’s not increasing your energy costs,” Renee said. For $69.95, the service also covers checking both the humidifier and water heater. Additionally, as one of the few licensed companies in the area specializing in boilers, the company offers boiler clean and check services for $79.95. “We stand by our products,” Renee said. “If an issue arises, we prioritize a swift reso-

lution and do our best to provide same-day service.” Lee added: “This level of responsiveness distinctly sets us apart because many competitors might only schedule service for the following week.” Customers are invited to visit Briarwood’s showroom featuring a variety of heating and cooling equipment, including hot water heaters, air conditioners, furnaces, filters and humidifier pads — as well as essential parts for those keen on DIY repairs. Stevenson quarterback Andrew Knight scrambles during Stevenson’s 21-7 win over Novi Aug. 25 at Novi High School. first half due to illness, and Jenkins would finish off the job under center to earn the win. When you talk about a dynamic offense this season in the MAC, Stevenson has to be at the top of the list. DeLorey and running back Jaiden Alston, who had six rushes for 57 yards in the win, have the potential to be one of the better running back duos in the county. Between both the air and on the ground, Knight has shown he has the tools to lead the offense, and he has an abundance of weapons at his disposal with Al-Awsy, Timbuc and Ahmad Hrhor, who hauled in four receptions for 86 yards in the win. DeLorey said a bulk of the offensive success is credited to the Stevenson offensive line. “Our offensive line has really stepped up, and they work well and communicate to give time for Andrew (Knight) to find receivers and make critical blocks to give Jaiden (Alston) and I the best running window we could have,” DeLorey said. Stevenson will have a MAC crossover game against MAC-White’s St. Clair Shores Lakeview on Aug. 31 at Lakeview High School. The Stevenson of 2022 is all grown up, and the young players turned veterans are ready to show what Stevenson football can do. “I feel like this season, we’re playing with something to prove,” Jenkins said. “We know we can do a lot better and we’re here to show we can.”

“I thought we were a physical football team on Friday,” Stevenson coach Justin Newcomb said. “Our kids really came to play. They played hard and they hustled to the ball. It wasn’t just one guy making a tackle. It was multiple guys coming into the tackle, causing fumbles and getting to the quarterback.” Stevenson took a 14-0 lead into halftime behind a pair of Knight touchdown passes and would tack on an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter to earn the win. If Stevenson is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the Macomb Area Conference Red, their defensive effort needs to be at the forefront of their success, and their front seven showcased just what they can bring to the table in the win. Recording six sacks and a forced fumble in the win, Stevenson’s defense suffocated the Wildcats offense throughout the entirety of the game. Will Olds (1), Ty Jenkins (1), Malachi Craft (1), Evan Watson (2), and Govanni Kelyana (1) each recorded sacks in the win while Olds and Caden Bollinger led the team with eight tackles apiece. Craft also forced a fumble with Olds earning the recovery. Stevenson’s defense held Novi to only 238 total yards on the day, and Bollinger said their defense is just getting started. “Our defensive unit is made up of the craziest and most passionate people I have ever met, including our defensive coordinator,” Bollinger said. “The men on our defense care so much about our performance that if any one of us falls short of greatness, we are right there to hold each other accountable.” While Stevenson’s defense garnered a bulk of the attention, and rightfully so, Knight’s sophomore campaign will be one to keep an eye on throughout the year, and it doesn’t get much better than a touchdown on your first pass attempt of the year as Knight connected with Ahmed Al-Awsy for a 40-yard touchdown to give Stevenson an early 7-0 lead. Knight would find Lucas Timbuc for a 76-yard touchdown late in the second quarter to give Stevenson a 14-0 lead at the half. Knight would exit the game after the

WATCH Fast-food customer evicted after sitting on counter

Police were called to a Burger King in the 5000 block of 15 Mile Road, near Mound Road, the morning of Aug. 20 because a manager wanted a male customer kicked out of the restaurant. The manager reportedly said the customer was ordered to leave, but he allegedly seated himself on the counter and “demanded service.” According to the report, the customer had also recently “caused a disturbance in the lobby” and smeared a substance — police redacted which kind — on the walls. The man reportedly left once police arrived to enforce the restaurant’s trespass request.

Leader Dogs for the Blind seeks host homes for breeding dogs, puppies BY MARY BETH ALMOND malmond@candgnews.com

ROCHESTER HILLS — Leader Dogs for the Blind is looking to the community to host a breeding dog in their home, a volunteer opportunity that the nonprofit says is now more accessible for a variety of lifestyles. Leader Dogs’ breeding program was established in the 1980s, according to Dana Hunter, Leader Dogs breeding manager. “One of the reasons that we first started a breeding program was so that we could better ensure the quality of the dogs that we were providing to our clients. We know, through science and practice, that the best way to care for dogs and raise litters of puppies is to do it in a home environment, because that’s eventually where these dogs are going to live in the future,” she said. “It’s the sole source of how we acquire guide dogs for our clients.” Previously, Leader Dogs hosts could choose to welcome either a breeding mom or a dad into their home, a program that has recently expanded to include five options to make hosting more flexible. “Our strategic plan included goals for us to create more dynamic volunteer opportunities, so that more people could get involved with Leader Dog,” Hunter said. “Everybody wants to give back in some way, so we were challenged with creating some new dynamic volunteer roles.” New this year is the “breeding mom (non-whelp) host,” who must live within six hours of Leader Dogs’ campus and agree to care for an adult female dog in their home — except when she is giving birth (whelping) in another host’s home and until her puppies are 7 weeks old. The new “whelp and litter host” must live within two hours of Leader Dogs’ campus and agree to invite a Leader Dogs mom to

birth in their home and care for the litter until they are 7 weeks old. The traditional “breeding mom (whelp) host” must live within six hours of Leader Dogs’ campus and agree to care for an adult female dog in their home — including having her give birth at home and care for her puppies until they are 7 weeks old. Those who live within four hours of Leader Dogs’ campus continue to have the option of becoming a “breeding dad host,” who cares for an adult male dog in their home and transfers the dog to Leader Dogs as requested for breeding duties. Leader Dogs’ new “temporary host” option, which must live within two hours of Leader Dogs’ campus, agrees to house a Leader Dogs mom or dad in their home for a year or less. All volunteer hosts, except for temporary hosts, can adopt the dog in their care upon retirement or a puppy from a litter born in their home. “We’re excited to see if we can capture some new audiences of people that may have been interested and wanted to participate in our breeding program, but were limited, for whatever reason — maybe the number of dogs in their home, or they didn’t want to add another pet to their family, or they wanted another dog but didn’t want to go through the whelp and litter care,” Hunter said. All veterinary care, until the breeding dog retires, is provided by Leader Dogs, along with heartworm and flea/tick medications. Pam Smaby, of Dexter, became a breeding mom host five years ago and has enjoyed it so much she is currently hosting her third momma dog. She adopted the first two dogs she hosted upon their retirement. “For me, it was really a life-changing experience,” she said. Smaby, a full-time middle school teachSee DOGS on page 15A

DISTRICTS WORK TO ATTRACT SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS BY MARY BETH ALMOND malmond@candgnews.com

METRO DETROIT — There’s a dwindling pool of substitute teachers, a crisis officials say is compounded by a serious lack of public and private educators nationwide. With the first day of school approaching in Michigan — and some already underway — districts are feverishly recruiting substitutes to have on hand when classroom teachers get sick, go on maternity leave or are otherwise unable to work. The need for subs is rising, experts say, because of the teacher shortage, which is causing stress on the number of subs. The burden has fallen equally on public and parochial schools, including in the Archdiocese of Detroit. “I believe it’s just that trickle-down effect from Michigan having so many openings for teachers that the next flow of who would be available have already tapped in for teaching positions,” said Eric Haley, the associate superintendent for the north and south regions of the archdiocese’s Department of Catholic Schools. “I think the

greatest challenge for us is within the city of Detroit and the suburbs around it, but it is apparent in other places as well.” Schools have been working diligently over the summer to build what Haley calls a healthy “bench of subs” — including retired teachers, before- and after-school caregivers, and others. “Having a bench is so important, because you never know what’s gonna happen. You could get hit with a year, say you’re a small school, K-8, and of your nine teaching positions, two or three go out on maternity leave or medical leave or something, and your normal pool of subs is gobbled up pretty quickly,” he said. “So even those that feel like they are in a good position, it’s always a wise idea to have a deeper bench of options.” Avondale Schools is experiencing their greatest need in special education, both for teachers and substitutes. “With special education substitutes, (The Michigan Department of Education) requires a bachelor’s degree for those types of substitutes, and there is a teacher shortage in that area, so it makes it even more challenging,” said Sharon Hyde, the executive

director of human resources for Avondale Schools. “And we don’t see much changing on the horizon, because the universities are all turning out far fewer candidates in special education than they have in many, many years, so we don’t see that pool of candidates getting replenished in the near future,” added Avondale Superintendent James Schwarz. To lessen the burden, Avondale Schools uses Edustaff, a substitute staffing service in Grand Rapids, to provide substitute services for the district’s teachers and paraprofessionals. The district also designates two substitute teachers to each building in the district. “The substitutes are assigned to that building, and they report to that building every day to be used on an emergency basis, and we’ve increased that pay rate to $150 per day for our building substitutes,” said Hyde. This year, Avondale has also used some creative planning to add bulk to its sub list. “Our paraprofessionals who have 60 credits or more, I have applied for the daily substitute permit for them, so that we can use them in case of an emergency,” Hyde explained. “That has been very helpful.”

Like Avondale, others within the education system have had to think outside the box to draw substitutes amid the shortage. “In terms of recruitment, we have done the career fairs, we’ve talked to recruiters, and we’ve looked at trying to help people get into alternative certification programs — those are the big things. For us, a big one has been people who retire out of public schools and maybe they want to collect their public school retirement and work in a private, non-public Catholic school,” Haley said. To become a substitute in Michigan, one must meet certain qualifications. All substitute teacher permits offered through the MDE require at least 60 semester hours — earning a grade of C or better — in any subject area from one or more two- or fouryear colleges or universities. However, there are restrictions on the number of days someone can work, based on the permit. The MDE’s Daily Substitute Permit allows people to complete intermittent daily substitute assignments of up to 90 calendar days within a school year, unless they seek a formal extension, while the Full-Year Basic See SUBSTITUTES on page 18A

Substitute Permit allows someone to work the same teaching assignment for more than 90 days, up to a full school year. For people hoping to teach a core subject area, the FullYear Basic Substitute Permit also requires one to have a related degree or a passing score on a state-approved test in the area. The Full-Year Shortage Substitute Permit — which requires a Michigan Professional, Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate — allows someone to teach a core subject area if they also have a relevant degree or passed a state-approved test in the specialty for up to half full-time equivalent per teacher. The Full-Year Expert Substitute Permit requires a demonstrated ability in the subject the substitute teacher instructs, and in most cases, at least five years of work experience in the subject for up to half FTE per teacher. Education requirements vary based on the subject being taught. Schwarz said Avondale is more confident in starting the school year with its current level of substitute teachers — although he said the district can always use more — compared to its certified special education staff. “That’s where we’re really struggling,” he said. “The experience credit from district to district varies depending on their agreedupon teacher contract, so you have some teacher contracts in some districts that are fairly liberal and allow for a lot of experience to be counted when granting a position, so they get a higher salary. tricts, such as Avondale, where there are caps on experience, where no matter how many years in the industry you may have, you’re capped at a certain level coming in. … That creates a discrepancy between districts in hiring.
