Students and staff at Novi Meadows Elementary School, which serves the fifth and sixth grades, are starting the year off in a brand-new building.

The school building sits high upon a hill facing Taft Road, on what was once a parking lot, like a gem for all to see.

“It’s a dream come true,” sixth grade Principal John Brickey said of the new school building.

The new building has a modernistic design that many have compared to that of a college campus, according to Brickey. He said some people have said it looks like the engineering school at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo or the newly renovated State Hall on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit, which also opens this fall. He said some have even compared it to Google Inc. because of the bright green, golden yellow, and blue color scheme.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by heart disease. One of every five deaths in the United States is due to cancer, and approximately 39.5% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes.

We all know someone with cancer, but how often do you hear of a person diagnosed with stage one cancer before it has spread? Probably not too often, but we all hear the stories of a loved one diagnosed with dreaded stage three or stage four cancer, and that is very scary.

All too often, individuals become aware of their cancer only when symptoms manifest, which poses a significant problem and often leads to late detection. By the time a person experiences enough symptoms to prompt a visit to their physician, cancer has usually progressed to stage three or four and has already spread. Consequently, survival rates diminish, treatments become more challenging, and life expectancy is reduced.

On the other hand, if cancer is detected at stage one, it becomes much easier to treat, often involving simple tumor resection. This early detection significantly increases survival rates and leads to a better quality of life.

Thousands attend the Michigan State Fair over Labor Day weekend

Novi hosts fundraiser for Maui wildfire victims

The city of Novi, in partnership with the Polynesian Arts Advocacy Council of Michigan, held the “Luau for Lahaina” Aug. 26 at the Novi Civic Center to benefit those affected by the wildfires in Maui.

Lahaina is where the largest of the fires took place. It was the original capital of Hawaii and is centrally rooted in Hawaiian culture.

The event was attended by 176 people and brought in $8,300 as of Sept. 4. All funds were given directly to the hereditary high chiefess of Lahaina, Kumu Hula Kahelelani See MAUI on page 8A

The Michigan State Fair in Novi has become a holiday tradition for many people throughout the state.

The fair has been held annually from the Thursday before Labor Day through the holiday itself at Suburban Collection Showplace for the last 11 years.

“We like the fair. The kids love coming here. It’s a yearly thing that we do,” said fairgoer Lexi Queen, of Milford.

The fair features a vast array of entertainment, including amusement park rides, and sideshows such as Rock N Roll K-9s, the Cool Zoo, the Aquatic Acrobatic Show and the Shrine Circus.

The circus offered attendees a chance to get out of the sweltering heat on Labor Day, as temperatures were in the 90s, and to take in the traditional circus spectacles, such as high wire acts and trapeze artists.

Novi Taco Fest attracts foodies from across metro Detroit

The second annual Novi Taco Fest attracted foodies from across metro Detroit when it took over a section of the Twelve Mile Crossing at Fountain Walk parking lot Aug. 25-27.

This year’s event differed from the festival’s original concept, which included an art fair, as the appeal of tacos alone was much greater than anticipated last year.

“The event was founded last year as an art fair with a few taco trucks, but the event caught on and went viral on Facebook, and the artists were overwhelmed by the taco fest,” said event manager Bart Loeb.

The move proved to be a good one as the show was attended by 20,000 people this year, according to Loeb. That’s 4,000 more people than last year, despite storms taking out power lines Aug. 24.

“Lots of people called to see if it was canceled, as they were afraid our power might be out, but we used giant generators,” Loeb said.

the tennis court. For the last year he has coached JV tennis at Catholic Central, and he most recently competed in the National Senior Games in Pittsburgh this July, where he was named a Humana Game Changer for his influence on fitness at a mature age.

However, if it wasn’t for an injury while running his fourth marathon back in 1985, he might not be the tennis champion he is today. Following the injury, his chiropractor recommended that he play tennis instead. It was at Walker Park in Staten Island, said to be the site of the first national tennis tournament in the United States, that Siracusa met Charlie Kasper. “(Kasper) was an accomplished tennis player at the club but saw me struggling on the court,” Siracusa said. “He came over and said, ‘Let me help you. Would you like to hit (tennis balls) a little bit?’”

Siracusa became fast friends with Kasper. They would hang out frequently and attend some tennis camps together.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Kasper, 54, then a battalion chief for the Fire Department of New York City, who was off duty, went to aid people at the twin towers and perished when the south tower collapsed. He was posthumously promoted to deputy chief.

“When I reached out to his wife, Laureen, and asked what I could do for her beyond just our family support, she said to continue to pay Charlie’s spirit forward through tennis, and find as many people in your life that maybe need a little help coaching and tutoring, and help them,” Siracusa said. “So, for me, I don’t need any more medals, trophies. I don’t need any of that. But what I do need is to have an experience like I just had in Pittsburgh (in July), and receiving a Game Changer award, which I will share with Charlie’s widow as another example of spreading his word about fitness and health associated with tennis.”

In addition to tennis, Siracusa continues to run, learned to swim in 2012 and has competed in Iron Man races. He cycles three days a week, runs twice a week, does strength training twice a week and sees a mobility coach twice a month. Siracusa is so passionate and diligent about his workouts that he has kept a detailed workout log highlighting every workout he has completed since 1978.

“Health, fitness and life are it for me,” Siracusa said.

“The community of tennis is lifelong as far as friendships and relationships, but I play the infinite game of fitness, and I play the infinite game of tennis because there is really no end and perfection is always very

elusive,” Siracusa said. “But you can kind of prove yourself. I like the opportunity to be out there on the court by myself, with no one to rely on but myself, and then use all my tools that I’ve been blessed to fine-tune over all these years from a mechanical side and a mental side to really test myself on the tennis court. It’s the cardio and all of the exercise, but it’s way bigger than that for me.

It’s a mission.”

In his mission to keep Kasper’s spirit alive, Siracusa said, he has helped close to 20 people succeed on the tennis court, in addition to the approximately 50 students he has helped to mentor in tennis at Catholic Central.

“The influence that a human being can have because of tennis is far reaching,” Siracusa said.

Outside of tennis, Siracusa has had a lengthy career in business. He is currently the CEO of Troll Co. Clothing and has worked for companies such as Hanes and Timberland. He said tennis provides the tools and training needed to succeed in business. Siracusa said that without focus, patience and discipline, a person doesn’t stand a chance on the tennis court or in business.

“It’s the same nine-box matrix that you need on a tennis court,” he said. “It’s focus, patience and discipline. It’s create, transform and lead and it’s show up, follow up and execute. … Those are the influencers or components that you have that make you successful in business, make you successful in tennis, but if you really break it down, make you successful in life.”

Attendees were able to visit with the Michigan Moana, learn how to make leis, and then were treated to a hula dancing concert by the Polynesian Dancers of Michigan. The performance showcased a variety of different types of hula from across Hawaii and featured guest Tiffanie Zuttermeister, of the Las Vegas Halau Kaleihoku Kuikanani, and students of Novi’s own Halau O’Ku’ukamali’i, under the direction of Pamela Gibson.

“I’m sure many of you here have memories of Lahaina, Maui or Hawaii. And so many of us carry that in our hearts, and we really feel like this is a way to give back, right?

Tourism takes a toll on the islands, and those treasured memories there that we have, we owe it to them, the people (of Hawaii),” said Gibson.

Sherry Hirzel, of Washington Township, a member of PAACOM and a virtual speech and language pathologist for the Lahaina school district, spoke of the devastation the fires caused her students, friends, colleagues and the district.

“As many of you know, King Kamehameha III (Elementary School) was destroyed in the fire,” she said through tears.

“The schoolyard where I would hear the kids playing and the myna birds chatter is suddenly silent. … So many of my friends were

CC. In his striving to always better his game, Siracusa took private lessons from Robbie Risdon at Novi Athletic Club. It was during a chance conversation with Risdon, who is also the varsity head tennis coach at CC, that Siracus learned CC was seeking a JV coach and volunteered himself to take on the job.

“There could be no better way to pay Charlie’s word forward than to be involved with young men who are freshmen through seniors in high school and influence them,” said Siracusa.

Risdon said she was surprised and overjoyed that Siracusa would want to take on the position. She said she hadn’t asked him, as she thought he would be too busy to take on mentoring a large group of teenage boys.

“He is so gifted and has so much to offer the boys. So, it was a wonderful thing.

Hirzel also read a statement from the principal of Lahaina Intermediate, Stacy Bookland. Bookland lost her house and her boat in the fires and was grateful for the support.

“It is so overwhelming with what we are dealing with and to know we have amazing people near and far supporting us helps to get us through these challenging times. Maui feels the aloha, and it keeps us going,” Bookland stated.

According to Hirzel, the children of Lahaina were scheduled to start school the next day. However, as a result of the fires, the school district had to postpone its in-person start date but was offering distance learning.

Only the elementary school burned to the ground. The other schools in the district were spared, but they have to wait to make sure the buildings are structurally sound. However, she said that all staff of the Lahaina school district have been accounted for and are safe.

They reportedly were still trying to locate some of their students and their families.

“We are still trying to figure out how we can best service them. But right now what they really need is support emotionally, and that’s our biggest concern at this time,” Hirzel said. “Obviously, they need to get back to some sort of normalcy and structure for academics, but right now we’re just really concerned about their mental health and emotional well-being.”

Hirzel said that she and her husband had visited the district last year. She said she It has been a great fit for him. He enjoys it.

The boys love him. He is able to get involved in the boys’ lives and teach them leadership skills. So it’s really good,” Risdon said of Siracusa’s coaching skills. “He changes people’s lives. He works hard at developing himself physically and mentally and spiritually. So he’s a great role model.”

She said Siracusa stands out because he genuinely cares about people, listens to them and makes a difference in their lives. Risdon said she has coached at CC for nine years and that the JV team has always been good, but since Siracusa joined the staff, the team is now at a higher level. She said the kids love coming out to practice with him and even attend optional practices with him.

“He just has that engaging personality,” Risdon said. “He just walks in with a group of people and their energy picks up a notch.

I see it with the boys as well.”

The banyan tree is a huge 150-year-old tree that is considered to be symbolic of the strength of Hawaii, Hirzel said. The tree has 58 different root structures to support it, and the people are hoping that the tree will make a comeback, she said.

Gibson said that they knew they were going to do a fundraiser as a school to help the people of Maui. However, after they were asked time and time again by attendees of their show, which travels across the Midwest, where they could donate, they decided to throw the Luau for Lahaina.

“Everywhere we went the weekend after the fire everyone kept saying the same thing; like, where can we donate? Some people just wanted to give us money because they knew we were affiliated, and what I heard from people here in Michigan, specifically, is that they didn’t know where to put their money and wanted to help,” Gibson said.

“So that’s why we actually came up with this.

the circus is the oldest form of family entertainment, as it has been around for 150 years. The Shrine Circus is put on annually by volunteers affiliated with the Shriners as a way to raise funds for their charity work providing medical treatment to children who have serious illnesses and burns.

The show also brought in vendors from across the community to offer everything from specialty candies and other food items to orthotics, jewelry and more.

This year’s fair featured the first public judging of the giant pumpkins. There were also several livestock competitions, quilting demonstrations and much more.

“It’s a lot bigger than I thought it was,” said Robert Williams, of Rochester. “I’m glad I came.”

“The fair went well,” said McKenzie Bowman, the director of communications and customer relations at Suburban Collection Showplace. “We received overall great feedback with little to no complaints. We increased the aisle widths to allow for less congestion, and we increased to 45 rides, the most we have ever had.”

Ashley Rodgers, the owner of Green Eyes Estate Sales who runs the business with her husband, Christopher Rodgers, listed a number of steps to get an estate sale ready.

The first thing people can expect is a consultation with the estate sale company to gauge their needs. Then comes organizing and evaluating the items, staging and showcasing, announcing the estate sale, and, finally, hosting the sale.

Ashley Rodgers described the first few hours of an estate sale as a “madhouse.” For organizational purposes, her company, as well as other companies, hand out numbers to the customers first in line and only allow a certain number of people in at a time.

hard to find, but you can find it. Smart and the ability to work with others to solve unique problems — that’s like finding a unicorn. So I was like, ‘I guess we got to start breeding unicorns.’ That’s kind of how this robotics program came to be. That’s how our makerspace came to be, and then they are like, ‘Hey, y’all get to build a school.’”

Along with the glass walls, the new building has several soundproof pods for students to work on projects; walls and tables with dry erase surfaces that can be flipped up so all can see; smart lights throughout the building that go on and off when someone enters the room and are dimmable, which aids students who get migraines; sound-absorbing light fixtures; and a vast variety of seating.

The furniture was picked out by the students who attended Novi Meadows during the 2022-23 school year. It includes couches, high bar seating and more traditional seating. There are also throw cushions and dry erase boards with an easy grip design. The library media center is solely for finding and checking out materials. Seating is deferred to the space in the commons area.

the educational experience by allowing children to commingle with other classes in a common area. The classrooms feature an interior glass wall facing the school commons area. This allows teachers to teach their classes a lesson, make sure they learn it and then let students go hang out with other students in the commons area while still under direct supervision.

“We’re really focused on collaboration,” fifth grade Principal Lisa Fenchel said.

“There should be lots of flexibility with that between the furnishings we have and the space that we have.”

Brickey said that science teaches that people are only able to focus on something for one minute for every year old they are.

Therefore, a fifth grade student can only focus for approximately 11 minutes and then go off into their own world, even though they might appear to be listening. Brickey said the new building allows teachers to give students a quick “pop” of information, test them on their intake of it, and as long as they get it, give them an assignment that they can work on in the commons area with their friends or allow them to stay in the classroom. This also allows the teacher to work more closely with those students who did not completely grasp the lesson in a smaller group setting.

“Why do you have to be stuck with only the kids that are in your class? That’s silly to me. And then it pushes responsibility, because I also have a glass wall, so if you’re out there acting a fool, the principal or a teacher sees it,” Brickey said. “If they want to go out and do the things, they have to be able to go out and handle themselves in a way that’s respectful and appropriate — respectful to those around them and appropriate for school.”

The new structure allows the school to break away from the old model with bells and start/end times. According to Brickey, under the old model, students are just moved through grades like an assembly line.

“It is a super innovative space,” he said of the new building. “The whole thought of it is humans in general, but kids especially, are pretty social creatures, and for so long schools have been constructed in a way that’s outdated. … It certainly does what it needs to do, but we are in a world now where things that are valued in the workplace (are different). In today’s workplace what’s valued is can you collaborate, can you work with others to solve unique problems. … Smart’s really not that hard to find. Chris Deneau, the owner of Clearview Estate Sales, said every estate sale they host is completely different. People can be out of town, in town, have multiple family members involved and host of other scenarios.

His company takes 35% of the profits, and he said they usually can get set up in a couple of days in a standard household.

“We have been running into less and less standard households in the last couple of years and more hoarding situations, it seems,” Deneau said.

How long it takes also depends on the estate. They’ve done estate sales that take a couple of days and also ones that take two to three weeks, Deneau said.

It takes a while, Rodgers said, to price the items in the estate. Her company uses professionals to appraise everything.

“Our pricing is based on careful research, years of experience and knowledge of the Detroit metro area market,” Rodgers said in an email. “Pricing is also a practice of knowing what current trends in home decor and decorating are popular.”

Both Rodgers and Deneau said it depends on the family when it comes to what happens to the items that aren’t sold.

“Our cleanout process includes selling items as a lot or bundle for deep discounts, donating leftover items to charity, utilizing refuse disposal services and sometimes even having free days,” Rodgers said in an email.

Deneau said his company works with Grace Centers of Hope to donate items not sold.

“There’s certain things that Grace Centers of Hope won’t take,” Deneau said. “So we really focus hard during the estate sale utilizing Facebook Marketplace, utilizing Craigslist, utilizing specialty groups to try and get rid of items that may not be donatable after the sale.”

Both Rodgers and Deneau said there does need to be empathy and compassion when getting ready for an estate sale.

Rodgers said an estate sale doesn’t necessarily happen because a loved one dies; it can be for any number of reasons. Deneau said he’s signed contracts with a 90-year-old going into assisted living and a 21-year-old who lost her parents.

“You have a lot of people that can deal with the situation, but you have a lot of people that you really need to be kind to and you need to walk them through the process very slowly or else they won’t make it through the process,” Deneau said.

They also both said they have dealt with difficult customers who come to estate sales.

Rodgers has security at their sales.

“My company is run by myself and my husband, who is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL,” Rodgers said in the email. She said he “is in charge of security at every sale, and our dedicated staff members all work together to keep everyone safe and shopping happily.”

People looking to host estate sales should be diligent about looking at reviews for a company, and they have to be careful of who they hire.

“But you need to be very diligent about your Google and your Yelp reviews,” Deneau said. “Because you can very, very easily hire a company that can take advantage of you.”

To get an estate sale started, Deneau said, people should take out anything they want to keep and then call an estate sale company.

“You really don’t have to lift another finger other than taking the stuff out that you want,” Deneau said.

CRIME WATCH Police make drunken driving arrest

A man was cited for drunken driving at 2:18 a.m. Sept. 1 after an officer noticed that he remained stopped at a green light for 15 seconds.

The officer followed the man from 10 Mile Road, east of Novi Road, and noticed the vehicle swerve out of its lane.

The officer pulled over the motorist. The man initially said he had not been drinking, but the officer noticed beer bottles in the vehicle. The motorist then reportedly said he had consumed one beer at 11:30 p.m. and thought that the time now was 1-1:30 a.m. The driver, who was from South Lyon, told police that he was trying to show his friend his old apartment, but there were no apartments in the area.

According to the report, the man had slurred speech and red, glossy eyes. He failed all field sobriety tests and then refused to do a preliminary breath test, police said He also refused to put his arms behind his back when he was told he was being arrested for operating while intoxicated.

He was removed from the vehicle and continued to resist officers’ attempts to place handcuffs on him. The passenger was also arrested for having open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, as two Bud Light bottles were recovered half full.

The passenger was released shortly thereafter. However, the driver took a Breathalyzer test that showed a blood alcohol content of 0.159% on the first sample and 0.166% on the second sample, both well over the legal limit. After a detox period, he was released, and his driver’s license was confiscated.

Cellphone taken from Kids Foot Locker bench later returned

An employee at Kids Foot Locker in Twelve Oaks Mall reported that her iPhone 14 was stolen off of a bench inside the store at 12:25 p.m.

Aug. 29.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows a woman wearing navy blue scrubs and a black Adidas pullover jacket hovering around the phone.

The woman then sits down in front of the phone and it disappears from sight, according to the police report. The footage then shows the woman reach behind her and put an object in her front pocket, while the victim is seen searching for her phone. When the woman stands up, the phone is no longer on the bench.

The owner of the phone told police that she logged into her Apple account on a computer and put her phone on “lost mode” and that the “find my iPhone” feature was not working. She said she believed the suspect had turned off the phone. The phone was later returned to its owner at around 6 p.m. by an unknown woman. With the phone returned and no suspect information, the case was closed.

The event featured a vast variety of taco trucks from across the country, many of which put a unique spin on traditional tacos. One example was sushi tacos, which attendee Robert Romero, of Dearborn, said was his favorite.

“It’s like drugs if it was food,” Romero said. “I’m addicted to food. Some (other) people here are addicted to food.”

Also available were more traditional taco vendors, and fair foods such as elephant ears.

Many vendors selling Mexican cultural items also were on hand, as well as some vendors offering

trips, cutlery, and specialty foods such as dipped and filled strawberries. Local cannabis shops took advantage of the opportunity to mingle food with THC, offering everything from organic CBD salves to dog treats.

There was plenty of entertainment as well with the return of lucha libre wrestlers, dancers and plenty of contests.

Despite the widened aisles and the increased number of rides, some guests said they felt there should be a few more rides for the amount spent on tickets. The ultimate ticket, which included rides, cost $42.

“We get it, there is a lot to do, but when you’ve got families of five or six, it becomes expensive,” said Queen, who attended the fair with her husband and three children.

She suggested that they be able to get a discounted rate for late-day admission, such as after 5 p.m., especially on the last day.

Her husband, Trevor Queen, said he feels the fair could add even more rides to make him feel like he is getting more bang for his buck.

“If the price goes up, they could add a little bit more stuff. I feel like it’s the same stuff every time, but the price goes up each year,” he said.

The LMC and robotics classroom have garage-style doors that open into the commons area. Teachers do not have a lot of space in their classrooms for personal items and instead are given a locker in one of four staff lounges, located on the end of each floor.

The lounges are outfitted with a small kitchenette and island bar seating. This design is meant to leave more space in the classrooms for kids.

The two prominently centered classrooms on each floor are dedicated to students with special needs. The rooms include a sensory closet with things to meet their sensory needs, moveable barriers for kids who need some private space, tables that raise and lower, a private bathroom with the ability to have a changing table, a heavy duty hook for a sensory swing, as well as a refrigerator and a sink.

Along with the new gym and cafeteria, they are also building six sixth grade science suites, two vocal music studios, two art studios and an outdoor art terrace.

During construction this year, fifth grade students will utilize the older sixth grade house for gym, art, band and strings, and all students will go to the Information and Technology Center, formerly the Career Prep Center, for lunch and vocal music.

The new building was funded with moneys from a 2019 bond.

“We could have kept sixth grade entirely contained in the sixth grade house, but those kids listened to and watched this building be built for a year. So, I did not have it in my heart to not let them be in here,” said Brickey. “So every opportunity we had to get sixth graders in, we got them in.”

Sixth graders will be able to come downstairs to use the commons anytime they want, but it is not right outside their door. The upper floor is also equipped with breakout pods, glass walls and they have a nice aerial view of the common space.

“The sixth grade hallway has opportunities to collaborate as well, but as you grow older, those opportunities become less and less the way school is structured,” said Brickey. “So, I told you what my vision for school should be. Well, it’s not what school is. So, as much as I want it to be, and I’m going to give them every chance they can get, they also have to be able to function in the structure of school too.”

“I know they’re looking for donations to help heal the burns.”

Classrooms are wireless and also feature mobile teaching stations, chairs and desks on casters, and touch screen monitors that raise and lower to adjust for height. The monitors are located on both ends of the classroom. So, something the teacher writes on one board will appear on the other as well, thereby eliminating the “front” of the classroom, allowing all kids to see the board.

“It’s an incredibly well-thought-out space,” Brickey said. “This district is next level. We do things that other districts can’t imagine, and then we do it so well and figure it out that they (other districts) can do it.

That’s our obligation here.”

Sixth grade students will be able to utilize the new building for robotics, the makerspace, the library media center and world language courses this year. However, the majority of their classes will be in the original sixth grade house. The second floor of the new building is still under construction and is expected to open in fall 2024.
