HANDS-ON HIGH TECH

We lead project teams through a proven decision-making process, using powerful analytic tools. Every project begins with a dynamic, collaborative process of discovery. Together, we explore concepts, sketch ideas, and build models. Using sophisticated tools, we rapidly create a menu of meaningful options. By enabling stakeholders to make key decisions early in design, we identify best-value solutions and lower project costs. During design development, our seamless integration of architecture and engineering delivers complete, coordinated documents, reduces change orders, and protects against schedule delays.

05.IDCA

DIGITAL DESIGN TOOLS Finding the perfect balance of natural and artificial light. Analyzing the robustness and performance of mechanical components and systems. Creating people-centered environments. These are just a few of the reasons we use Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools to illuminate options and support decision making. CAE tools add value by increasing efficiency, lowering costs, and reducing risk.

AIRFLOW MODELING

VISUALIZATION

Particularly valuable in data centers and other advanced technology facilities, airflow modeling (using Computational Fluid Dynamics or CFD) helps us evaluate the environmental performance of a building, apply innovative energyefficiency measures, and implement sustainable design strategies, such as natural ventilation and underfloor air distribution.

Modeling and animation tools are an integral part of our design process. They are invaluable in communicating design intent to our clients and helping the team explore a greater number of iterations during design development. Building Information Modeling (BIM), 3D rapid prototyping and animation support design coordination and early constructability analysis, improving building quality and performance.

LONG BEFORE CONSTRUCTION BEGINS, WE APPLY RIGOROUS ANALYSIS AND TESTING TO ENSURE HIGH PERFORMANCE DESIGN

INTEGRATED SECURITY

SYSTEMS INTEGRATION

Over 50 professionals in our special systems group are focused on security, life safety, and telecommunications designs. With broad-based technology expertise and cutting-edge knowledge, we help our clients protect their physical, intellectual, and digital property. Integrating vulnerability assessment and threat mitigation into the design, we develop secure and safe environments without compromising quality of life.

Today’s hyper-complex buildings demand the integration of mechanical, electrical, and process systems for optimal performance. Working in our specialized Systems Integration Lab, IDCA engineers ensure that systems achieve full functionality and that buildings work holistically.

Innovation happens when forwardthinking architects work side-by-side with expert engineers from all disciplines. Design solutions are holistic. Architecture is dynamic, responsive, and constructible. Building systems are energy efficient and sustainable.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY COORDINATION We organize our greatest resource— our people—in dedicated team spaces for every project. Multidisciplinary environments—including architects, engineers, and planners—encourage formal and informal dialogue among team members, spark innovative ideas, and provide a holistic approach to project challenges.

Every IDCA project benefits from over 25 years of lessons learned and industry knowledge transfer. Innovative airflow solutions originally developed for semiconductor manufacturing are now standard in mission-critical design. Modular, multi-use strategies used in manufacturing help make research laboratories more flexible and responsive. Today, our advanced design and engineering solutions benefit solar photovoltaics, flat panel display, nanotechnology, sustainable manufacturing, and emerging technologies. We understand how innovation drives growth markets.

THE BEGINNING We formed in 1985 when a group of technology-minded architects and engineers joined forces to serve the burgeoning semiconductor industry. Early landmark projects included the world’s first Class 1 and Class 10 cleanrooms for manufacturing and the first wave of chip manufacturing facilities in the West and beyond. As the technology revolution transformed the landscape, we grew to become a global design leader, serving clients in semiconductors, data centers, nanotechnology, and emerging technologies.

During the semiconductor industry’s dramatic growth in the 1990s, the rapid advance of technology demanded a new approach to project delivery. With conventional design and construction approaches, the products intended to be produced in the early fabs were in danger of becoming obsolete before the facilities were completed. In response, we spearheaded new design-build delivery models that resulted in unprecedented schedule performance. Our close interdisciplinary coordination and innovative overlapping of design and construction helped reduce by half the design-build duration for largescale semiconductor manufacturing facilities.

Today, we bring this commitment to innovation—and many of these same strategies—to benefit our clients across the spectrum of advanced technology, from solar photovoltaics (PV) and flat panel display to consumer products and pharmaceuticals. Looking to the future, we’re using advancements in technology to address climate change and help create a sustainable society. Our unique carbon assessment and solar mapping tools allow technology manufacturers to dramatically reduce waste streams, increase resource efficiency, and maximize passive energy reduction strategies. At the same time, our approach to manufacturing execution systems (MES) is raising the bar for efficiency and automation, using renewable technologies to streamline production, lower costs, and increase return on investment. Wherever the future takes us, IDCA is poised to help our clients make ground-breaking advances, increase market share, and build a better world.
