Editor’s Ramblings We’ve had 2 Club runs since the last Journal was issued. Our run to Kevin and Erica Churchill’s home for our Annual Breakfast event, which has evolved into more of a Brunch in recent times, and the latest event, our Tri-Club Sports Day. Both were great days: the Brunch because of the excellent weather and in particular the pleasant atmosphere, aided in no small way by good company and the pleasing ambience of so many trees and shrubbery on Kevin and Erica’s property. It was good to see several of our newer members on the day, along with a visitor and even some faces we haven’t seen for some time. And what a line-up of cars! We had Porsches, Pontiacs, Fords, a Studebaker, Buick, Willys, Morris Cooper and Morris Garage, Chev, Packard and a “Beamer”, even some modern cars.. The Sports Day was enjoyable in another way: apart from the usual good company which is the expected norm of our Club runs..........we won the Shield! This was achieved by some very skilful efforts (of the other 2 Clubs) being penalised for playing too well along with some quite creative scoring on the part of the Chief Scorer. Coming up is the Tri-Club Hot Cross Bun Run. Always a great day with an excellent roll-up of members from all three Clubs. The Veteran Car Club will be running the event this year. There is also a request from the “Hunters Green Village” of Cranbourne to attend their Open day on 3rd.March at 9am. with your car to go on display. They in turn will supply a free BBQ along with Tea and Coffee. Should be a good day. That’s about it this time. Eddie Reynolds.
Vale Ken Findlay Longer standing CHACA members will have many fond memories of fellow members Ken and June Findlay as they regularly attended Club runs in the 80’s and 90’s. Ken and June joined CHACA in 1987, but, sadly, age catches up with all of us and Ken was no exception. Ken passed away on New Year’s Day. Our condolences go out to June and her family on this sad occasion.
A Big thank you. Thank you so much for the get well cards, phone calls, love, support & encouragement from CHACA members in my distress of having a brain tumour removed. Now commencing Radiation & Chemo for 6 weeks, will be lying low! My best regards to all. Vin Forbes

Hunter’s Green Village Open Day with BBQ and Display day. 3rd. March 2013. 9am to 4pm. The organisers are asking if we would come along on this day and join in the festivities. A further incentive will be free BBQ food along with free unlimited tea and coffee if we bring along our Club cars. This is the village where members Fred and Pat Lombardo have retired to and they’re loving it! We have had two Journal nights there so far and it is really worth seeing. Wonderful for our Journal nights. This is where we put the Journals in the envelopes for mailing, and we have made it a regular “Dinner Club” outing which we hold at various members’ homes on a roster basis. One of the great features we enjoy as a Journal Crew and it could be for you if you decide to take on the role as Editor, not to mention the holidays we have together on an ad hoc basis. Anyhow, back to the Village: Why not enjoy a day with a difference and see if you may indeed consider this sort of retirement in the distant or not so distant future.

Classic and Historic Automobile Club of Australia Minutes of General Meeting held 1st February 2013 Deepdene Park Hall, Whitehorse Road Deepdene The President of the Club, Mr. Kevin Churchill, opened the meeting at 8.15 p.m. He welcomed those in attendance to the February meeting of CHACA, which is the first meeting for 2013. He wished those in attendance a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Attendance: As per the Attendance Book. Quorum :A quorum existed for the meeting. VALE: Mr Churchill commented that long standing CHACA members will have many memories of fellow members Ken and June Findlay as they attended Club runs in the 80’s and 90’s and regularly attended meetings until circumstances changed that. Ken and June joined CHACA in 1987. Sadly, age catches up with all of us and Ken was no exception. Ken passed away on New Year’s Day. A minutes silence was observed. Peter Galley informed the meeting that member Doug Goreham who had been unwell, was now in a wheelchair. 1. APOLOGIES Ray Griffin, Max Austin, John Christie, Peter Cassar. BUSINESS ARISING FROM December 2012 MEETING Defibrillator – this has been purchased and training is being organised. We will carry it on runs and have it available here on meeting nights. Committee Members are to be trained in its use at the next Committee meeting. A training session will be held for all members at the April General Meeting. BBQ – Committee decided to put on a BBQ meal before the February, March & April meetings. However, we called for volunteers to organise the food and do the cooking with the Club paying for the food. No one has volunteered so it did not happen tonight. Let’s make it happen for the March meeting. It would be an excellent way for our newer Members to meet other Club Members. We only need two volunteers. Please see any Committee Member after the meeting tonight.
4. CORRESPONDENCE (a) Inwards/Outwards Newsletters from other Clubs; emails to and from National Museum re the Royal Daimler Confirm that correspondence be approved Moved: D Landells Seconded: N Kunnel Carried 4(a)
BUSINESS ARISING FROM CORRESPONDENCE In response to a question from Bob Clark, the chairman advised that the National Museum was undertaking a restoration of the Govt. Daimler brought out in 1948 .The Museum is calling for donations to assist this project. Further details will be provided in the next journal. Shannons have advised that Jarrod Harding has been appointed Business Development Manager. Vin Forbes advised that Jarrod has been very supportive of CHACA . 5. TREASURER’S REPORT Dennis Healy advised that since the last meeting receipts totalled $10,524.20, Payments totalled $3518.88 leaving a bank balance of $13192.11 Moved: D Healy Seconded: T Herbstreit Carried At this point in the meeting James Allan mentioned the raffle and handed out raffle tickets for sale during the meeting. 6a. MONTHLY REPORTS President – we have been advised by the National Museum that they are currently restoring one of the Daimlers used in the 1954 Royal Tour. It is planned to have it completed by 2014 in time for the 60th anniversary of that Tour. The full story will be in the March Journal. The Club is still in need of a Secretary and an Activities Co-ordinator. There are other vacancies on Committee but these two positions are vital. Either of these positions would be ideal for a newer Member to get to know other Members and be part of the Club. If we don’t fill these positions, especially Secretary, very soon, then we will have no choice but to go to a professional organisation to fill that role. Current Committee Members have all “been there, done that” for a long time and in some cases are there for their second or third time around. If we can’t find volunteers we will use Club funds to pay for the job to be done. They are not hard jobs to do and there are only 6 Committee meetings for the year. We also need an Editor-in-training so that they can take over at the end of the year. Again, this is not a difficult job as the layout work is done by others and it has the added benefit of a monthly get together to prepare the final product for mailing. Please seriously think about it and act. Talk to me at any time for further details of these vacancies. Technical Officer Neville Kunnel advised that the CPS was going smoothly. However 45 members were not financial which for them
CHACA Journal Page 7
means that their CPS permits are not valid. He then advised,in response to a question, that the photos he required were : Front right ¾ view ,Read left ¾ view and the engine. Computer images were fine otherwise 6by 4 inch photos. Membership Secretary Barry Smith advised that the new club directory could not be finalised until the issue of unfinancial members had been resolved. He said the Club was gaining about 6 new members per month.
In response to further question, the meeting was advised that it was an oversite for Graham Hutchinson to still be listed as secretary in the journal. Next Club meeting is 1st March 2013. Next Committee Meeting is 13th February 9.

CLOSED MEETING AT 9.00 P.M.
HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT By Graham Hutchinson
When steel is heated while in contact with some chemicals, the steel absorbs hydrogen, which is distributed around the grain boundaries. This has the effect of making the steel brittle. This condition is called hydrogen embrittlement. Mild steel is not greatly affected, as the carbon content is very low, however tool steels such as spring steel or high tensile steel, which are used because the part is subjected to stress in their assigned task, are subject to hydrogen embrittlement, and will fail in operation. Hydrogen embrittlement can be overcome by a heat treatment as soon as possible following the offending treatment. Processes requiring such remedial attention are as follows -------Chemical stripping Copper plating Nickel plating Chromium plating Zinc plating The heat treatment to overcome the problem is simply to allow the part to soak in a stove or furnace at a controlled temperature, and for a suitable time as suggested below. These temperatures are quite low enough to allow for the use of the kitchen stove, if you can "sweet talk" your way into tying it up for 3 hours. If your electroplater knows about this, (and if he is any good he should), he may have a suitable stove or furnace. He probably won't bother though, unless you ask him. If the steel is to be chrome plated, it should be copper plated first, prior to the nickel and chrome going on. The time to do the heating is straight after the copper plating. It would not be necessary to do it again after it comes out of the nickel and chrome bathes, once is enough. The reason for copper first, is that nickel and chrome are porous and the rust will come through, the copper is there to prevent this happening. Before going on, let us look at tempering tool steels. Remember that 260 degrees C is well within the tempering temperature range for plain carbon tool steels, (which the part is likely to be, if it is a 1930's or earlier car). The tempering process takes place after the steel is hardened, and consists of reheating to 100 to 300 degrees C., and cooling. Tempering is to overcome brittleness, and always follows hardening of tool steels. If the part is to withstand shock or flexing, it would be tempered at the higher ranges, and would suffer a small loss of hardness as a result. Whereas if the function of the part was simply to resist wear, and not ever likely to be subjected to shock, it would be tempered in the 100 to 150 degree range, and not suffer any loss of hardness. So you will have to think about the function of the part before deciding if 260 C for 3 hours, or 180 C for 12 hours is the way to go. From the 1940's, various alloying elements were being added to tool steels of all kinds, and indeed it is almost impossible to find a plain carbon tool steel these days. Hardening as well as tempering temperatures for these alloy tool steels is quite a bit higher than those for the plain carbon tool steels, and if the car you are working on is a later model, the steel used would certainly be an alloy steel, so 260 C for 3 hours would be safe. When purchasing steel these days, one must get all the heat treatment information from the steel merchant, so as to be able to tell your heat treatment man what it is he has to harden and temper. The new steels have very much better mechanical and physical properties as a result of the addition of these alloying elements. This is why it is best never to use N.O.S. valves, when it is possible to get a suitable modern alternative which would be made from a modern heat resistant stainless steel. That is unless you want to do what we did in the old days and do a valve grind every 10,000 miles. Heat to 260 C degrees 230 C degrees 180 C degrees CHACA Journal Page 9

Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motor Sport 9 th- 10th March 2013 - The Shannons Classic Walk Hi Car Clubs, A reminder that the Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motor Sport is fast rolling around again. The 2012 meeting was excellent and was again short listed for the prestigious “International Historic Motoring Awards” for 2012. Others on this short list include Donington Historic Festival, Goodwood Revival & Silverstone Classic. The award was again won by the Goodwood Revival. This year the main feature of the meeting on Saturday & Sunday will be a ½ hour “Big Banger” Sports Car race. Along with local cars, there will be over 20 of these cars from overseas (America, France Germany UK & New Zealand), most have never been seen in Australia before and 10 of which are 8 litre Can-Am cars. The start of each race should see Phillip Island relocated somewhere else in Westernport Bay. Along with many trade stands, the Expo Centre will feature a celebratory display of Corvettes, Aston Martins & genuine Shelbys. Shannons Walk will be held on the same basis as the last meeting, again including the invitation to display one club car in the Expo Centre (more on that later). The club entry fees will be the same as last year and are as follows :Car and driver displaying in the Shannons Walk – Free Admission All other passengers in the display car ½ regular entry fee Regular Price Friday $25 Saturday $30 Sunday $40 2 Day Pass $60 3 Day Pass $80 Children under the age of 16
Club Price $10 $15 $20 $30 $40 free
For those clubs new to Shannons Walk, if you are displaying both days you do not have to leave your cars in the walk overnight, although you are welcome to do so if you want. You are also welcome to leave any equipment and displays associated with your club, but be aware that weather conditions at the circuit can turn bad overnight with very strong winds. There are regular security patrols around the circuit after hours, but neither the VHRR, Shannons, the Victorian Mini Club Inc, or the Circuit Management can take any responsibility for any loss or damage to equipment or cars. To all Permit Plate Holders Due to VicRoads tightening their control on all Clubs involved with the Club Permit Scheme (CPS) we now request that all members issued with a Permit through CHACA since February 1st. 2011 under the new Log Book scheme attend at least one Club Run or Meeting every 6 months with the Car. This will assist the Club in ensuring your vehicle continues to meet with all the guidelines and conditions of use as set out by VicRoads and CHACA. Members are also reminded that the Club is bound by the new rules of this scheme to advise VicRoads of any Permit Holder who is no longer a financial member of the Club.
