Next Meeting
It was brought to the attention of members at the last General Meeting (I wasn’t there) that the report and photos of our Birthday Run to Yarra Glen in May had not been published. “Unbelievable that this could happen”, that’s what I thought when Kevin told me. But when I checked, there it wasn’t! I have the photos I took on the day, so there’s no problem. It will be in this month’s edition. However this highlights the problem that we do not have an Activities Officer. No Activities Officer often means no report will be sent to me. Therefore........no reminder! This Editorship is not the only thing I’m involved in and it sometimes becomes difficult to keep track of what I’m up to. I’m retired and as most retirees will testify we do not have as much spare time as when we worked. I do have one request. If anyone notices a mistake or omission in the Journal that needs to be rectified please contact me directly in the first instance (or a Committee member) where it will be fixed quickly and amicably. I find it hard to describe my feelings after hearing what happened at the General meeting. Interesting to note that the incorrect date on the front page (20th. May) happens to be the date of the Birthday Run. What’s going on? On a lighter note:- our last run to Trentham was extremely enjoyable. Thanks to John and Louise Baker for taking over from Trish and Henry Alger. You should all have received a letter in the mail regarding our Annual Luncheon and Presentation day at Moorabbin Airport. The date is 11th. November 2012. Late notice, but, again, no Activities Officer. The closing date is (was) 31st October for catering purposes, but if you have overlooked it and are still interested contact Kevin or a Committee person ASAP. Also, note that our last run of the year will be the Christmas Party at Como Gardens (George Hettrell’s place) and the date is now 9th. December 2012. Not the 2nd. as previously indicated. Unfortunately the Steam train will not be running this time. If you have presents for the kids see a VDC person on the day. Next year (2013) will be my last year as Editor so please give it some thought and if you want to take it on I’ll be quite willing to give you all the help you need. My daughter Janelle takes a lot of the load off me and you will find her a very reliable and able adjunct to the role. Perhaps you would like to step into the role during the year and “learn the ropes”. I will happily be “Co-editor” for the year. Eddie Reynolds.
Friday 2nd November, 2012 Well, as you all know, our next meeting is the Annual General, which means elections, followed by a natter night and supper with your fellow club members. I hope you enjoyed Les Taylor's display and talk last month. I did not know there were so many different types of Blow Torches made, and Les only showed us a small part of his fantastic collection. A most enjoyable night was had by all. Don't forget a to bring along a plate for supper, to finish the night off and thankyou Ray Griffin Vice President.
HUTCHIE'S HUPP FOR SALE I am hoping for my 1934 Hupmobile (Registration No. 01190 H) to go to the home of a CHACA Member. The transfer of ownership of a vehicle on the CPS is simple when the transfer is to a fellow Club Member. This will be a most reluctant sale, but age & illness has made it increasingly difficult for me to continue to maintain my pride & joy. There is a comprehensive story on our Club Website dealing with the 20 year restoration if you have not seen it, look it up on www.chaca.com.au This comprises many pictures of before & after, as well as text articles listing those who contributed to the restoration, as well as a brief history of the work done over those years. Look for HUTCHIE'S HUPMOBILE RESTORATION, & I suggest clicking on still photos.

AND NOW YOU KNOW Q: Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left? A: When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since. Q: Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help? A: This comes from the French word m'aidez -meaning 'help me' and is pronounced, approximately, 'mayday'. Q: Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'? A: In France, where tennis became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'the egg'. When tennis was introduced in the US, Americans (mis)pronounced it 'love'. Q. Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses? A: In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfil obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous. Q: Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'? A: In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player. Q: Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast? CHACA Journal Page 8
A: It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own. Q: Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'? A: Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the centre of attention. Q: Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'? A: Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares. Q: In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from? A. When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf'. He had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into 'caddie'. Q: Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs? A: Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks'. When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.................

Report: Pig and Whistle Run 23/9/2012 – 25 Cars- 46 People enjoyed lunch. We met at 7/11 at Rockbank for 10.30 departure, enjoying a chat and coffee. We got away late from this which meant we could only have a toilet stop at Gisborne. We left Gisborne, via a roundabout 15 mins later than what we had planned. We all enjoyed the run through the scenery of Gisborne and Woodend and the Wombat State Forrest. We covered the Houdini small monument on the fields of Diggers Rest, (Remembering the first plane flight in Australia) and at the base of the Macedon Ranges we were amazed to view the Horse Stud, which featured white starting stalls and a Kilometre straight through the valley. We arrived at the Pig and Whistle at 12.27pm, and there we were joined by Ralph and Lois Provan in their beautiful Pale Blue 1930 Dodge, which Ralph had recently restored. We were joined by several visitors for the lunch, which was great value for $25 a head. Soup, Roast Lamb or Pork, and delicious sweets, Rhubarb and Apple crumble, Sticky date pudding, Crème caramel, the list went on of delicious sweets to choose from. Lucky Entrant prizes were drawn by Trish and Henry Alger and were well received by one and all. The prizes were a gift from Chaca to show appreciation of the members support. We finished up approximately 3.30pm with a group photo in front of the Pig and Whistle taken by Eddie and then some people headed to Trentham for a town walk and then headed on home. A beautiful sunny day, enjoyed by all. Thank you for supporting Chaca !!!!!!!! Report Louise Baker. Photos Louise Baker and Eddie Reynolds. Those who attended:-

CHACA Birthday Run and Motoring Heritage Day It was a cool morning early but warmed up nicely as the day wore on. We were blessed with a good attendance of members both new and long standing. There were even some we seldom see these days, so it was great to catch up with them again. Many thanks to all those who helped with our stall on the day and particularly to Gail who made up all the salads for us. The food, of course, was for the ,members who attended the run. It was a gourmets delight with sausages, rissoles and homemade salads. And we mustn’t forget the cake, our 46th. Birthday cake. This was cut by our Club Lady and Club Man of the year. Holdens’ view on ethanol Concerns continue about the use of ethanol in petrol The product ethanol added to petrol may also be called bio-ethanol to link its use with non-fossil derived or renewable bio-fuels. Bio-ethanol has been used at times over the decades, but its recent use is linked to EU directives to increase the proportion of automotive fuel derived from renewable sources, in order to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The fact that all petrol now contains a small percentage of ethanol raises two very important issues: Ethanol is hydroscopic which leads to a separation of the ethanol and petrol, with the ethanol going to the bottom of the tank/fuel pump/ float chamber etc; and, Ethanol is not compatible with a range of materials such as aluminium, brass, natural rubber, etc. See full list below. Shell UK have advised as follows : “The fuel we sell will continue to comply with the relevant fuel standards and specifications as it did previously. The finished petrol will meet the UK gasoline standard EN228, and the maximum amount of ethanol blended into the fuel will be in line with this and the RTFO (renewable fuel transport obligation - 5% max). However that doesn’t really help owners of vintage vehicles. There are several things you can do to minimise the effects of ethanol. Firstly run a non-alcohol based fuel stabilizer all year round. Older engines were designed primarily for straight gasoline, and using ethanol without protection may cause corrosion of some metals in the engine. It also may damage natural rubber and cork parts. Fuel Stabilizers contain additives to protect against rust and corrosion caused by ethanol fuel blends. If practical Install a water separation filter and fuel filter, and replace fuel lines, gaskets or o-rings with new ethanol resistant materials. Similarly replace the fuel tank if necessary with one made from an ethanol resistant material. In terms of laying up the vehicle; Assuming the above measures are in place (we cannot make a laying up procedure if they are not, as it simply would not be advisable with fuel containing ethanol), we would suggest filling the fuel tank to about 95% of its capacity with fuel, rather than leaving the fuel tank low. This minimizes; the tank-breathing effect, the loss of volatile components and the ingress of moisture into the fuel tank. The latter, in extreme cases, can cause the appearance of free-water in the fuel. If a fuel is to be stored in a motor vehicle fuel tank, then maintaining fuel quality is important in order to maintain good start-up and a good level of vehicle drivability. When an engine fails to start after a period of lay -up, it may be less to do with fuel deterioration, and could be related to un-seasonal fuel, which may not be sufficiently volatile to start the engine from cold. Non volatile residues are often observed in the fuel tank, de-
livery system and/or carburettors in cases of severe evaporative loss of a gasoline. The residue can manifest itself as either a gum or lacquer-like film or deposit, or a gel-like substance. This residue would be a combination of low-volatility constituents and detergent additives that are found in gasoline, but concentrated after evaporation. We do not advise storing fuels in vehicles for more than 6 months. You should also take into account the differences between summer and winter grades of petrol. Petrol has a higher volatility in the winter in order to enable cold starting. For this reason it is better to fill the tank with a winter grade fuel (16th October - 14th April) rather than a summer grade.” Material

THERE’S A DEVIL! One evening, a young woman came home from a date, rather sad. She told her mother, “Anthony proposed to me an hour ago”. “Then why are you so sad?” her mother asked. “Because he also told me he is an atheist. Mom he doesn’t even believe there’s a Devil”. Her mother replied, “Marry him anyway, between the two of us, we’ll show him just how wrong he is”. Courtesy Russell Kerr.

Ken’s Joke of the Month.
A bloke goes out and buys himself the best and most expensive car he can find. He takes it out for a spin, and while stopped at a red light an old bloke on a moped (both looking about 90 years old) pulls up next to him. The old man looks over the sleek, shiny surface of the car and asks, “what kind of car you got there sonny?” The dude replies, “A 2012 Turbo BeepBeep. They cost over $500.000.00” “That’s a lot of money” muses the old guy. “Why do they cost so much?” “Cause this car can do 320 miles an hour”, states the cool dude proudly. The old man asks, Can I take a look inside?” “Sure”, replies the owner. So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Leaning back on his moped, the old man says, “That’s a pretty nice car alright!” Just then the light changes and the cool dude decides to show the old man what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedo reaches 320. Suddenly the guy notices a dot in the rear vision mirror....and it seems to be getting closer. Whhhoooooosssssshhhhhhh! Something whips past him, going maybe three times as fast! The guy wonders what on earth could be going faster than his Turbo BeepBeep....Then ahead of him he sees a dot coming towards him. Whhhoooooosssshhh! Goes by him again, and it kind of looked like the old man on the moped! But the guy thinks it couldn’t be, for, after all, no way could a moped outrun his Turbo BeepBeep! Again he sees a dot fast approaching in his rear vision mirror. WhhhooooosssshhKABLAM!! It ploughs into the back of his car, demolishing the rear end. The guy stops and jumps out, and indeed it is the old man. The moped is totalled, and the old bloke is badly bent up. The dude runs up to the old man lying, dying in the middle of the road. “OMG you’re really hurt bad! Is there anything I can do for you? The old man sighs, “Yeah, unhook my braces from your side view mirror, will ya?
