Next Meeting Thursday 3rd October 2013 Vintage Drivers' Club Rooms, Unit 8, 41-49 Norcal Road Nunawading 3131 Melway Ref: 48 G-11

NOT AT DEEPDENE The club is looking at different venues that offer the club more space and comfort. Although Deepdene is very cheap, only about $30 a night, if we have any more than 50 members turn up, it is very crowded, so if the club is to grow we need bigger rooms, so please come along and see for yourself what the VDC Clubrooms can offer. Ray Griffin Vice President

Editorial As Ray has said above, the next meeting is in Nunawading. This is a trial meeting where we will be seeking your opinion as to the suitability of these rooms. So please come along, bring your spouse/partner and family and give us a good cross-section of views and maybe suggestions. If we agree to conduct our meetings there, we can use the downstairs room on Thursday nights until the renovations are completed in around 12 months time. (Thursday night may be a better option, traffic wise). The option of trying a different venue has been raised on several occasions in the past, but in each instance Deepdene has reigned supreme, largely because it is central to the majority of members and the rent is cheap. So, why are we stirring the pot again, you might ask? If we are to attract new members we need to keep up with the times and offer a good reason why they should come out on a possibly cold wintry night. A function of committee is to always be on the lookout for better ways to do things, strive for better ideas, make our meetings and outings as attractive as possible. We would be derelict in our duty if we didn’t explore alternatives as they come along. The rent represents a rise of around $450.00 a year. Hope to see you there! Eddie Reynolds, Editor. PS. Have you given any thought to making me your Assistant Editor next year. A new Laptop will be supplied.

IDEAS NEEDED If anyone has any ideas for our “Ladies Night” entertainment at our General meeting in December please let Ray Griffin know. (03 59776649). To the newer members, our December meeting is traditionally a night for the ladies where a small gift is presented to each lady and the entertainment is centred on a subject that is relevant to their interests.

Run to Ripponlea on Sunday 1st. September 2013. This run was organised by Roz & Barry Smith after we received an invitation to attend their Father’s Day celebrations in the grounds of Ripponlea Mansion. It was a great day and the weather was on our side too. A good variety of vehicles to pore over complemented the occasion and we even had a 1941 speedboat immaculately restored to drool over. Subject: Thank you Date: Wed, 4 Sep 2013 14:19:13 +1000 From: Candice.Bennett@nattrust.com.au To: rozbar@bigpond.com Hi Barry, I have just returned to the office after a couple of days off, so it is my first day back after the Fathers’ Day event. I wanted to extend my biggest thank you to you and the other car club members who attended the day. From the feedback I had people loved seeing the cars – one little girl was pulling her dad up the driveway at the anticipation as seeing the “old cars”. I am sorry, however that one member did not have a pleasant day. Just as I was packing down the event I got a phonecall from a very disgruntled and unhappy member saying he did not enjoy the day because his wife got hit in the head with a soccer ball. I did explain that we do generally have a “no ball games” policies on the main lawn but it is often hard to police it on days like Sunday when there is only Sherredan and myself roaming. Anyway, I hope this has not damped the event for others as I know we certainly love having you and from those I did get a chance to talk to, they enjoyed coming also. Many thanks again. C H A C A Report:

A Run in the Country & Pub Lunch.

Sunday 11/8/2013

Lilydale Lake: The run got off to a great start with most participants meeting in the car park. The weather was cold, however not too cold, as everyone got out of their cars to meet new members and have a chat. The drive to the next stop was very picturesque. Upper Yarra Museum: Turned out to be the highlight of the day, (besides the scenery) with the Yarra Junction Volunteers pulling out all stops to make sure we had a marvellous time and well informed tour. Led by Tom O’Meara, two other volunteers and the three blacksmiths. The blacksmiths were working on the day, and displaying their wares, it was such a joy to see them in action, and witness the coals burning, while the blacksmiths hammered and poked metal into something with a new life. The exhibits were excellent, plentiful and varied. Trains, , garden displays, wood carvings, machinery, metal art, memorabilia, photos, clocks, clothes, jewellery school tools from the past, small heritage buildings, bikes, suitcase, books and Journals. The Museum is set in the now defunct Yarra Junction Railway station. Volunteers with the help of government grants and donations from many locals keep the museum going and maintained with a lot of their own time and effort. We were privileged to have some children join in the day, and they very much enjoyed the exhibits and activities. There was also a lovely camp fire near the blacksmiths. Very pleasing to see the museum alive, with people and experiences. CHACA members enjoyed a lovely hot cup of Tea / Coffee and biscuits, served in tea cups from a matching English Bone China set. The tea set was donated to the Museum by three local sisters, who have since passed away. How very thoughtful of them to put back into their local community for people to enjoy. Trestle Bridge. We then all headed for a drive through the beautiful forest, to the amazing Trestle Bridge, in Noojee. We had just enough time there, to take photos, see the cars all crammed together, and make our way up to the top of the trestle bridge for a great view of the surrounding area. The Outpost Restaurant: We then headed to the restaurant for a delightful lunch, joined by more members, friends and children. Sixty two (we had cancellations due to illness) members and family enjoyed the lunch. Barb gave us the Restaurant area to use as a private function, so we were able to make it our own for the afternoon. Six “Lucky entrant” prizes were drawn with the help of all the children attending. The Prize bags included some Car Badges donated by Doug Gorham and hand knitted scarves made by Jenny Hanks. A Certificate of appreciation was made to the owner Barb Snelling. The staff members were very helpful, and obliging with our sit down bistro menu for our large group. Louise Baker 12/8/2013

THE “DUNNY They were funny looking buildings, that were once a way of life,If you couldn't sprint the distance, then you really were in strife. They were nailed, they were wired, but were mostly falling down,There was one in every yard, in every house, in every town. They were given many names, some were even funny, But to most of us, we knew them as the outhouse or the dunny. I've seen some of them all gussied up, with painted doors and all, But it really made no difference, they were just a port of call. Now my old man would take a bet, he'd lay an even pound, That you wouldn't make the dunny with them turkeys hangin' round. They had so many uses, these buildings out the back," You could even hide from mother, so you wouldn't get the strap. That's why we had good cricketers, never mind the bumps, We used the pathway for the wicket and the dunny door for stumps. Now my old man would sit for hours, the smell would rot your socks, He read the daily back to front in that good old thunderbox. And if by chance that nature called sometime through the night, You always sent the dog in first, for there was no flamin' light. And the dunny seemed to be the place where crawlies liked to hide, But never ever showed themselves until you sat inside. There was no such thing as Sorbent, no tissues there at all, Just squares of well read newspaper, a hangin' on the wall. If you had some friendly neighbours, as neighbours sometimes are, You could sit and chat to them, if you left the door ajar.. When suddenly you got the urge, and down the track you fled, Then of course the magpies were there to peck you on your head. Then the time there was a wet, the rain it never stopped, If you had an urgent call, you ran between the drops. The dunny man came once a week, to these buildings out the back, And he would leave an extra can, if you left for him a zac. For those of you who've no idea what I mean by a zac, Then you're too young to have ever had, a dunny out the back. Thank you to Stan Miller for this poem.

I bought a Jeep! Yes I bought a Jeep. Yes, a Jeep!

Iain advised that the Wade family of Gippsland, and long-time supporters of the AOMC, had recently experienced a drastic fire in their premises, during which a son had died. Iain had conveyed AOMC condolences to the family. Minutes of the last AOMC Delegates Meeting held on 20 May 2013 as reported in Issue 121 of the Newsletter were approved without change. There was no Business Arising. Iain reported on tonight’s Agenda Items as follows. 6.1 The proposed President's Summit was still being planned. 7. Correspondence. Iain reported that the bulk of correspondence involved routine queries about membership and AOMC accounts, all of which had been followed up Iain thanked the many clubs which had forwarded copies of letters sent to VicRoads supporting the AOMC's submission on the CPS. One letter opposed the AOMC proposals. Two other matters had been raised - the request to retain and use historic vehicle number plates was being considered but action was possible only after the police computers are upgraded. No early solution is expected. The other matter concerns a discussion paper issued by the Victorian Government on the application of current regulations about imported vehicles to historical and special vehicles. The AOMC is preparing a response. 8. Treasurer's Report. David Williamson advised that final reports for the financial year 2012-2013 were being prepared for approval in November, as required by the Department of Consumer Affairs. The figures to the end of June 2013 indicate AOMC assets of approximately $226,000 and that we have paid $6060 in taxation so far this year. There are no significant expenses in train at this time. The very successful major car shows in 2013 mean that the AOMC is currently in a very good position. Only three listed member clubs are currently not financial but nine new clubs have joined. These are mostly small clubs seeking access to the CPS scheme. David also indicated that he would be standing down as Treasurer at the 2013 AGM and invited anyone interested in becoming Treasurer to discuss the job with him. He reminded prospective Treasurers that the AOMC employs a bookkeeper to deal with all routine transactions and to assist the Treasurer. 9.GUEST SPEAKER (Bob Brewer from Carwood) Bob has been working on refurbishing interior woodwork in classic cars since 1986. His factory is located at 17B Elma Rd, Cheltenham 3192. ph 03 9553 0483. His website is www.webtrade.com.au/jags-r-us. He repairs damaged woodwork but also replaces original wood with burr walnut 'skins' on metal frames these days. Sunlight causes most of the damage and he has developed a range of glues, coatings and dyes to overcome most of the problems. Up to ten layers are needed at times. Some items have to be imported, such as the special 'hidden screws' used to join wooden frames. About 90% of the timber used is walnut, mainly in British cars. In American cars it is mostly painted metal, some with glued paper surfaces. He also runs a wedding car service using some of his seven Jaguars. They all have perfect refurbished woodwork! Delegates asked numerous questions and Iain Ross thanked Bob for his interesting talk before suspending the meeting for supper. 11.President's Report (available in the August 2013 Newsletter). Iain congratulated the Muscle Car fraternity on their recent excellent display at the Exhibition Building. Iain welcomed two new members to the AOMC Committee - Gary Turner (Morris Car Club) and Matthew Lambert (Rootes Group Car Club). The AOMC Committee is faced with the loss of a number of long-serving members at the AGM in November 2013 and needs more people to come forward, especially from American and Japanese Car Clubs. In negotiations with VicRoads the hobby vehicle movement needs one strong, comprehensive and realistic advocate to put its views and this should be the AOMC. Iain commended the Mustang Club on its recent car raffle for charity at the Muscle Car Show and the Volkswagon Club on its

restoring a car for a charity scheme as excellent examples of ways in which the movement can engage with society at large. 12. Club Permit Scheme. Rod Amos gave a detailed oral report and answered many questions from delegates. In summary the issues raised concerned VicRoads responses to the AOMC recommendations on modified vehicles, including the years for application of the various requirements for entry to the CPS. Safety on the road is the key concern and there is some evidence that VicRoads is beginning to understand the AOMC proposals for recognising the acceptance of relatively minor changes to a vehicle's specifications as an acceptance that such 'modifications' actually make old vehicles safer and more reliable. Again, there was some degree of support for using the date of 1930 as the changeover for recognising earlier vehicles as not being required to meet strict, general RWC standards. At July meeting (VicRoads, AOMC & Federation)VicRoads made some concessions to AOMC position. Trigger for mandatory safety upgrades (collapsible steering columns, etc) on pre 1949 vehicles to be changed to 60% power increase (raised from previous 20%) Have agreed on period categories: pre 1949, pre 1968 and post 1969 (when ADR’s were introduced.) Don’t intend new regulations to apply to cars already on the system. However, nothing is yet settled and the Federation continues to oppose any realistic attempts to accommodate the needs of hobby vehicle owners. The opposition from that quarter stems from personal posturing rather than failing to solve problems. The failure to act reasonably is discriminating against the genuine aspirations of members. These concerns were canvassed at length at the AOMC Seminar on 1 June 2013 and can be studied in the article by Rod Amos published in the August 2013 AOMC Newsletter on pages 17 to 19. 13. Historic Vehicle Events. The next AOMC sponsored show is the Shannon’s Aussie Car Show on 1 September 2013 at Flemington. Any vehicles manufactured in Australia. Flyers are available. See the AOMC website. Support needed from the Australian make car clubs. The Austin Seven Club is organising a Wings and Wheels Historic Car Sprint on the 14 and 15 September at Maryborough Aerodrome (ph 03 9827 8124 AH). On 6 October 2013 the Morris Car Club is organising a 'Show and Shine' at the Caribbean Gardens, Scoresby, Vic. Enquiries: Gary Turner 03 5977 5686 Motorclassica at the Exhibition Building, Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October 2013. Check the AOMC Website for more details and other events. 14.Engine Number Records Report. Phillip Johnstone is on leave. There will be a four week delay on enquiries. 15.AHMF Report. Iain Ross confirmed his resignation as the President. There were no delegates from AOMC or Western Australia Council at the meeting in Canberra in August this year. 16. Delegates Reports. A number of events were advised. See Item 13 above and AOMC website. 17. General Business. Many delegates gave anecdotes about difficulties encountered renewing CPS permits and examples of attempts to short circuit and frustrate the scheme (not their club). Richard Snedden, 20 August 2013

Out bicycling one day with my eight-year-old granddaughter, Carolyn, I got a little wistful. “In ten years,” I said, “you'll want to be with your friends and you won't go walking, biking, and swimming with me like you do now. Carolyn shrugged. “In ten years you'll be too old to do all those things anyway.”

Kens Joke of the month: Two Irishmen are sitting in a pub, watching the Tour De France on TV. Seamus shakes his head and asks, “Why the hell do they do all that?” “Do what?” replies Mick. “Go on them bikes for miles and miles, killin’ themselves going up and down hills and round the bends, day after day, week after week. No matter if it’s icy, rainin’, snowin’, hailin’....Why would they torture themselves like that?” “It’s all for the prestige and the money, don’t ye know” says Mick. “Ye know the winner gets about half a million Euros?” “Sure, I understand that,” says Seamus, “but why do all the others do it?”.

Memo ; To all Clubs Vic Roads are experiencing delays in processing Club Permit Scheme renewals that are posted to their head office address. Delays are being caused by the current changes in staff arrangements, that will see a large reduction in Vic Roads staff numbers. It is believed that scheme participants that renew at their local Vic Roads office will not be affected by this delay. It is recommended that for the time being renewals should be forwarded in person to the branches rather than posted to Vic Roads headquarters.
