Municipal and High School Stadiums



Memorial Stadium

Chatham County – Savannah, GA Completion Date: 2018 Construction Cost: $12,000,000

CHA was selected to provide design and construction administration services for the replacement of Memorial Stadium which was being used for high school football games, local youth football programs, and a band competitions. The new stadium includes seating capacity for up to 5,000 spectators, a synthetic turf field system with heat-reducing infill that will lower temperatures on the field by up to 25 degrees. The new stadium also includes new locker rooms with showers for home and visiting teams, concessions, press box with public address system and audio/video simulcast technology. Additional amenities include storage areas under the grandstand for maintenance equipment, a digital scoreboard, field lighting, offices and security systems.

Athletic Facilities

Peekskill High School – Peekskill, NY

CHA provided master planning services for Peekskill CSD for their high school athletic facilities including a 400 meter track, field event areas, synthetic turf multi-purpose field, practice fields, softball field, sports lighting, spectator seating, restroom and concession facilities, pedestrian circulation, entry features and landscaping. CHA was subsequently retained to provide pre-referendum services, survey, SEQRA services, geotechnical services and final design services for the master planned facilities.


Doug Shaw Stadium

City of Myrtle Beach – Myrtle Beach, SC Completion Date: 2008 (Track & Field) 2017 (Stadium) Construction Cost: $3,100,000 (Track & Field) $6,000,000 (Stadium)

CHA was retained by the City to prepare a plan for reconstruction of Doug Shaw Stadium. The facility reconstruction included a new eightlane collegiate track facility, new synthetic turf football/soccer field, new sports lighting, an additional 1,000 seats, ADA and structural improvements to the existing 4,000 seats, and upgrades to the existing press box facility. In addition, CHA provided design, permitting and construction administration services for stadium upgrades including demolition of existing support structures, construction of two new team rooms, officials locker room and 3,000 sq ft restroom facility. Renovations to the grandstand included structural repairs, two new aisles and the addition of 1,000 seats. CHA is also designed renovations to the existing track including resurfacing and the addition of two new sprint chutes, as well as the replacement of the synthetic turf field within.

Sanford B. Wanner Stadium James City County – Williamsburg, VA Completion Date: 2009 Construction Cost: $5,800,000 Awards: 2008 ACEC Honor Award Winner 2008 Virginia Park and Recreation Society Project of the Year Award Winner

CHA completed planning and design for James City County’s new Sanford B. Wanner Stadium. This complex is used as the competition venue for the County’s two existing high schools, as well as the planned third high school. The facility contains a lighted full size synthetic turf multi-purpose playing field, spectator seating for 3,000, a full-service press box, locker room facilities, concession facilities and public restrooms.

George Washington High School City of Danville, VA

As part of an overall economic feasibility study, CHA conducted a building condition assessment of a 1970’s stadium at George Washington High School in Danville, VA. Included in the assessment were the precast concrete grandstands, press box, concession/restroom buildings, field house, visitor’s grandstands the track , playing field and overall site circulation. CHA completed an inventory of all components, assessed the condition and remaining useful life and provided recommendations for improvements and/or replacements.

Track & Stadium Field County of Durham – Durham, NC Completion Date: 2008 Construction Cost: $7,300,000

CHA provided design and construction administration services for the improvements to Durham County Stadium. Improvements included complete renovation of the seating bowls, new 400M all weather running track, field events, new scoreboard and renovation of support facilities including restrooms, concessions, lockers and team rooms.


Football/Soccer Stadiums Richland County School District One – Columbia, SC Completion Date: 2017 (Columbia High School) 2018 (Dreher High School) Construction Cost: $2,500,000 (Columbia High School) $3,000,000 (Dreher High School)

CHA provided sports field, sport lighting and civil/site design and permitting services for improvements to two stadium fields for Richland County School District One. At Columbia High School, the project scope involved replacement of the existing natural grass field with a new synthetic turf field, new home and visitor bleachers, new concession/ restroom building, new entry plaza with ticket booth, new scoreboard and new sports lighting. At Dreher High School, the project scope involved new synthetic turf field, new home and visitor bleachers, new concession/restroom building, new entry plaza with ticket booth, new scoreboard and new sports lighting.

High School Football Stadium Elizabethton City Schools – Elizabethton, TN Completion Date: 2015 Construction Cost: $4,300,000

CHA developed the master plan for the new 4,000 seat sports stadium. CHA went on to develop construction drawings for the synthetic turf field, 4,000 seat bleachers, sports lights, entry plaza and site improvements.


High School Sports Stadium King George County – King George, VA Completion Date: 2012 Construction Cost: $3,800,000

CHA was retained by King George County to plan and design a new sports stadium at King George High School. The project included a new turf field, bleacher seating for 2,000, sportsfield lighting, a 6,180 sq ft support building for athletes and spectators and infrastructure to serve the new facility. The new building contains locker rooms, concessions and public restrooms. CHA’s scope of services included site evaluation, programming, preliminary and final design, and permitting.

Science Hill High School City of Johnson City – Johnson City, TN Completion Date: 2010 Construction Cost: $5,000,000

CHA designed and constructed upgrades to the Science Hill High Stadium. The upgrades included the synthetic turf multi-purpose field, track resurfacing, 5,000-seat bleachers, additional public toilet, press box, team rooms, lighting improvements, new scoreboard, and concession stand.


Municipal Stadium City of Danbury – Danbury, CT Completion Date: 2004 Construction Cost: $2,000,000 Awards: ACEC of Connecticut, 2005 Merit Award

Danbury High School has always taken pride in its track and field programs, as they are known as a perennial powerhouse on the national level. Now, with the help of CHA, Danbury High School has a facility to be proud of as well. CHA designed their eightlane, 400M track, which is now considered one of the best in New England. In addition to this, CHA designed Danbury’s turf field, which accommodates football, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse; as well as a 4,500 sq ft plaza which overlooks the stadium and serves as a gathering place for spectators.

Brent Steurerwald Stadium Shenendehowa High School – Clifton Park, NY Completion Date: 2009 Construction Cost: $3,200,000

CHA Sports completed design services for renovations to Brent Steurerwald Stadium at Shenendehowa High School. Shenendehowa is one of New York State’s perennial high school sports powerhouses. The renovations were based upon an initial study performed by CHA. New features at the stadium includes an eight-lane all weather track with steeple chase, new scoreboard, new concession/restroom facility, 1,000 new additional seats, new dual field event runways (2-high jumps; 2-shotputs; 2 pole vaults; 2 long jumps), and new pedestrian walkways. The multipurpose field was converted from a natural grass field to a synthetic turf field.


Ohio Experience



Yager Stadium

Miami University – Oxford, OH Completion Date: 2004 Construction Cost: $800,000

Weather conditions are an ever-pressing factor in the maintenance and functionality of outdoor sports complexes. It is for this reason that Miami University chose to upgrade their football facility, Yager Stadium, to a more manageable and predictable infill turf product. CHA completed research in order to select the best synthetic turf product, as well as provided assistance with logo and color scheme, drainage and irrigation design, as well as construction phase services.

Softball Stadium

Miami University – Oxford, OH Completion Date: 2004 Construction Cost: $3,500,000

CHA was responsible for the planning, design and construction administration of this NCAA Division I women’s varsity competition softball field through construction drawing. The $3.4M facility seats 700 fans and includes a picnic area and restrooms. In addition, team dugouts with related storage and restrooms, batting cages and bullpen areas were provided for the Lady Redhawks and their opponents, and a press box and sound system provide quality game and tournament coverage. The field itself is composed of natural sand-based turf. Designers coordinated their efforts with the University’s athletic master plan, and included pedestrian and vehicular circulation on the site, as well as utility connection.


Field Hockey Facility Miami University – Oxford, OH Completion Date: 2005

CHA was responsible for the planning and design of the reconstruction the synthetic turf system which included an E-Layer for their field hockey and lacrosse programs.

Don Shula Stadium John Carroll University – University Heights, OH Completion Date: 2011 Construction Cost: $1,750,000

CHA provided design and construction phase services for the renovation of Don Shula Stadium. The work included the expansion and renovation of their 400M all-weather track, a new synthetic turf field and the renovation of the existing grandstands. The project features a high end “full pour” track surface, on an expanded 8-lane track with full field event venues, a synthetic turf field with logos, new stadium entry, and renovated grandstands. The project required close attention to the existing soil conditions and the design of a robust subbase system to support the track and field areas.


Robert Kahn Track & Fred Shults Field Oberlin College – Oberlin, OH Completion Date: 2007 Construction Cost: $2,000,000

CHA was part of a design/build team that provided the planning and design of a new track and soccer field stadium. The new stadium includes a 400 meter track, dedicated throws area, amended topsoil field for soccer and lacrosse, 1000 seat bleachers, storage and restroom building and sports lighting.

Running Track Replacement Bowling Green State University – Bowling Greene, OH Completion Date: 2008 Construction Cost: $900,000

CHA designed the reconstruction of the existing track facility. The existing radius was expanded to meet current trends in the industry. A throwing complex was also constructed during this project outside of the track oval.


Beekman Park Turf Fields Ohio State University – Columbus, OH Completion Date: 2016 Construction Cost:

CHA provided design services for the conversion of Field 9 at Beekman Park from a grass rugby field to a turf surface, providing all drainage and site restoration services during the installation. Lines will be included for several other sports activities used by Intramural Sports.
