Roundabouts are highly cost-efficient. They reduce accidents, increase mobility, reduce air pollution, and cost less to maintain. CHA Consulting, Inc. is cost-efficient too. Our expertise in roundabout design is the result of working on many projects. Certainly, each one was unique, but something we have encountered from one project might be priceless in designing another project. There are no off-the-shelf answers. Design involves superior attention to technique, consideration of the smallest details, and significant experience. Our knowledge base affords us the opportunity to spend our time effectively. Superior experience yields superior results.
Our Experts Dave Henkel, PE, PTOE Dave has 30 years of experience providing traffic engineering services including the analysis and design of dozens of roundabouts including single and double lane roundabouts as well as “tear-drop” roundabouts. As a recognized expert on roundabout analysis and design and an active member of the Transportation Research Board, Dave has presented at the International Conference on Roundabouts and workshops across the United States. Dave’s most recent roundabout experience includes the design of 21 roundabouts on CHA’s award-winning US 31 Hamilton County project in Carmel, IN.
Sarah Bowman, PE, PTOE Sarah has 10 years of experience in pedestrian/bicycle facility planning and design, traffic modeling and operations analysis, and traffic signal system design. Sarah is well versed in modeling and analyzing roundabouts in isolated settings and in corridor settings including multiple roundabout and/or corridors with traffic signals in close proximity to roundabouts for state DOTs and local municipalities. Her experience also includes providing simulations of transportation networks for use in preliminary planning and concept development to final design for public presentations. Sarah was the recipient of the 2017 Women of Excellence award in the Emerging Professionals category from the Capital District Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Manny Salorio, PE Manny has 26 years of experience in transportation and traffic-related design. He performs preliminary studies and final design on highway reconstruction and rehabilitation projects, as well as air quality analyses and other trafficrelated studies. His highway design experience includes urban reconstruction projects, intersection improvements and roundabout designs, congestion-relief and management projects, pedestrian/multi-modal improvement projects, and rural highway reconstruction and realignment projects. Manny has experience on projects for state agencies, counties and local governments, as well as private entities.
Glenridge Road Reconstruction Route 50 to Route 146 Glenville, NY
CHA provided scoping, alternative analysis and design services for the reconstruction and widening of Glenridge Road to improve safety. Conceptual highway alternatives were developed to improve capacity and pedestrian mobility. The selected alternative included the construction of a roundabout at the Maple Avenue intersection.
US Route 62 & NY Route 391 Hamburg, NY
This 18 mile reconstruction included four roundabouts, pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, improved intersection geometry, traffic calming features, signal upgrades, additional turn lanes, a new drainage system, and highway lighting. CHA led design, alternatives development, an air quality and noise analysis, a fourday charrette, right-of-way acquisition, and construction sequencing. Awards Received: • 2009 APWA of Western New York Project of the Year Award - Transportation • 2009 ACEC - NY Platinum
Route 5S/John Street Roundabout Analysis Utica, NY
CHA analyzed a roundabout at the Route 5S & John Street intersection using Vissim and Sidra analysis software. Based on observations from the model, it was determined that the southbound traffic at John Street had limited opportunities to enter the roundabout due to large platoons of traffic entering from the east and low eastbound left and northbound through volumes, which would provide gaps for the southbound vehicles. In addition, occasional queue spillback from the westbound approach at Route 5S & Genesee Street would disrupt operations at the roundabout, preventing westbound traffic from proceeding through the roundabout, causing additional delays for the southbound movement. This is an example where roundabout experience prevented utilizing this intersection type at a location where it would not be effective.
Schutt Road Roundabout Analysis Wallkill, NY
CHA analyzed traffic patterns and volumes for feasibility of roundabouts along Schutt Road. Performance models and a capacity analysis was completed using Vissim and Sidra analysis software. From these analyses, it was determined that one travel lane in each direction would be used for the new roundabout. In addition to level of service and delay, travel time and network vehicle hours of delay were also determined.
Stockwell Drive Avon, MA
CHA analyzed and designed a modern roundabout as part of the traffic mitigation improvements required for the first IKEA furniture store in MA. Located in Merchant’s Park at the end of Stockwell Drive at the Avon and Stoughton town line, this four leg single lane roundabout provides access to IKEA and other big box retail stores from Stockwell Drive and IKEA Way. The roundabout was constructed in 2005 and was updated with new signs and pavement markings in 2013 to reflect changes recommended in the MUTCD.
River Road Reconstruction Windham, ME
CHA designed this single lane roundabout as part of the 4.7 mile River Road reconstruction project. We used VISSIM to demonstrate the operation of the roundabout during the project’s public hearing.
US 4 & Harris Hill Road Boscawen, NH
CHA designed this single lane roundabout at the intersection of US 4 and Harris Hill Road including approximately 1,300 feet of US 4 and 550 feet of Harris Hill Road. In less than 3 months, CHA completed the final design, contract plans and bid documents, drainage analysis and design, and traffic control plans.
Marlboro, Main, and Winchester Street Intersection Keene, NH
CHA designed this 2 lane “hybrid” roundabout at the City’s gateway entrance to downtown Keene. With an ADT of over 24,000 vpd and 5,000 pedestrians from the abutting Keene State College campus, the intersection had the highest crash rate and worst level of service (LOS) in the City of Keene. Since the roundabout’s construction there have been no reportable accidents and the LOS is one of the highest in the city. Awards Received: • 2005 Merit Award for Excellence in Design & Planning - Plan NH
US Route 31 Carmel, IN
CHA recently completed the design of a project on US 31 containing 21 roundabouts, including single lane, multilane, and teardrop roundabout interchanges. With more than 100 operational roundabouts, Carmel, IN is known at the US mecca of roundabouts. Awards Received: • 2016 ENR Midwest Best Project - Transportation • 2016 Indy Chamber Monumental Award - Engineering
Keystone Parkway & 96th Street Carmel, IN
CHA provided the design and traffic studies for this new split-grade interchange on Keystone Parkway. We developed a six-lane bridge to carry Keystone Parkway over the newly widened 96th Street. Three additional roundabouts were designed, as well as a collectordistributor roadway between 96th Street and I-465. To improve local traffic flow, three new connector roads were designed.
Walnut Street and Riggin Road Roundabout Muncie, IN
This $1.3M federally funded project involved the reconstruction of the existing four-way, stop-controlled intersection as a single-lane roundabout. Upon completion of a traffic analysis, which determined that a single-lane roundabout was expected to operate acceptably in the design year, two conceptual designs were developed. The preferred concept allowed the majority of the project to be constructed “offline by closing only the south leg of the approach while maintaining traffic on the remaining three legs; minimized risk of costly impacts to the MALSR stations; and provided greater flexibility for future expansion of the roundabout.
Morrison Road Reconstruction Delaware County, IN
This $5.3M federally funded project involved the reconstruction of an existing intersection as a singlelane roundabout and and 1.0 miles of roadway reconstruction. Unique design elements of the intersection improvements included centering the roundabout over a new 220 foot three-sided precast reinforced concrete bridge. The roundabout was offset to the northwest to minimize ROW impacts to residential properties.
