Roundabouts are highly cost-efficient. They reduce accidents, increase mobility, reduce air pollution, and cost less to maintain. CHA Consulting, Inc. is cost-efficient too. Our expertise in roundabout design is the result of working on many projects. Certainly, each one was unique, but something we have encountered from one project might be priceless in designing another project. There are no off-the-shelf answers. Design involves superior attention to technique, consideration of the smallest details, and significant experience. Our knowledge base affords us the opportunity to spend our time effectively. Superior experience yields superior results.
Our Experts John Morgan, PE, PTOE John is responsible for all aspects of traffic and highway engineering projects in CHA’s Norwell, MA office. With over 22 years of experience with a focus in traffic impact studies, traffic signal design and highway design, John’s roundabout design experience includes: • Mini-roundabout at the Worthington Village Center • Single lane roundabout at the intersection of Mattakeesett Street and Maquan Street in Pembroke • Single lane roundabout at Stockwell Drive in Avon • Dual roundabouts in the Norfolk Town Center
Dave Henkel, PE, PTOE Dave has 30 years of experience providing traffic engineering services including the analysis and design of dozens of roundabouts including single and double lane roundabouts as well as “tear-drop” roundabouts. As a recognized expert on roundabout analysis and design and an active member of the Transportation Research Board, Dave has presented at the International Conference on Roundabouts and workshops across the United States. Dave’s most recent roundabout experience includes the design of 21 roundabouts on CHA’s awardwinning US 31 Hamilton County project in Carmel, IN.
John Parrelli, PE John has 21 years of experience in highway, site and drainage design including the design of several roundabouts in both rural and urban settings in New England. John’s recent roundabout experience includes: • Single lane roundabout at Base Hill Road in Keene, NH • Single lane roundabout at Windham Center Road, Windham, ME • Single lane roundabout at Factory Road in Swanzey, NH • Hybrid roundabouts in Keene and Dover, NH • Single lane roundabout at Harris Hill Road in Boscawen, NH • Single lane roundabout at Maple Avenue in Keene, NH
Marlboro, Main, and Winchester Street Intersection Keene, NH
CHA designed this 2 lane “hybrid” roundabout at the City’s gateway entrance to downtown Keene. With an ADT of over 24,000 vpd and 5,000 pedestrians from the abutting Keene State College campus, the intersection had the highest crash rate and worst LOS in the City of Keene. Since the roundabout’s construction there have been no reportable accidents and the LOS is one of the highest in the City. Awards Received: • 2005 Merit Award for Excellence in Design & Planning - Plan NH
US Route 31 Carmel, IN
CHA recently completed the design of a project on US 31 containing 21 roundabouts, including single lane, multilane, and teardrop roundabout interchanges. With more than 100 operational roundabouts, Carmel, IN is known at the US mecca of roundabouts. Awards Received: • 2016 ENR Midwest Best Project - Transportation • 2016 Indy Chamber Monumental Award - Engineering
River Road Reconstruction Windham, ME
CHA designed this single lane roundabout as part of the 4.7 mile River Road reconstruction project. We used VISSIM to demonstrate the operation of the roundabout during the project’s public hearing.
Route 14 Corridor Improvement Pembroke, MA
As part of the 3 mile Route 14 corridor improvements in Pembroke, MA, CHA designed a new modern roundabout at the intersection of Mattakeesett Street and Maquan Street to replace the existing stop control. This three leg single lane roundabout includes provisions for bicycles and pedestrians. The project is currently being constructed by MassDOT through the Transportation Improvement Program.
Stockwell Drive Avon, MA
CHA analyzed and designed a modern roundabout as part of the traffic mitigation improvements required for the first IKEA furniture store in MA. Located in Merchant’s Park at the end of Stockwell Drive at the Avon and Stoughton town line, this four leg single lane roundabout provides access to IKEA and other big box retail stores from Stockwell Drive and IKEA Way. The roundabout was constructed in 2005 and was updated with new signs and pavement markings in 2013 to reflect changes recommended in the MUTCD.
Keystone Parkway & 96th Street Carmel, IN
CHA provided the design and traffic studies for this new split-grade interchange on Keystone Parkway. We developed a six-lane bridge to carry Keystone Parkway over the newly widened 96th Street. Three additional roundabouts were designed, as well as a collectordistributor roadway between 96th Street and I-465. To improve local traffic flow, three new connector roads were designed.
Old North Road and Williamsburg Road (Route 143) Worthington, MA
As part of CHA’s design of Route 143 in Worthington, the improvements for the village center include a miniroundabout which was selected over the traditional roundabout in order to limit impacts to adjacent historical properties.

Base Hill Road Keene, NH
In the late 1990’s, CHA completed the design of the original unsignalized Base Hill Road intersection for the NHDOT prior to the wide acceptance of roundabouts. In 2016, CHA completed the redesign of this intersection with a modern, single lane roundabout to improve safety and operations at this high ADT location.
US Route 4, Spur Road and Boston Harbor Road Intersection Dover, NH
As part of the Newington Dover Little Bay Bridge project, CHA designed a hybrid two lane roundabout at the US Route 4, Spur Road and Boston Harbor Road Intersection. The design was developed as part of a Value Engineering Study for the project and includes a HAWK signal system to accommodate the visually impaired. Construction is anticipated to be completed in 2019.
Maple Avenue/Court Street/Old Walpole Road Roundabout Keene, NH
CHA completed the design of this single lane roundabout which was fast tracked to improve safety for an anticipated predesign and vehicular traffic increase due to the opening of the new Keene Middle School near the intersection.
Swanzey/Factory Road Intersection Swanzey, NH
CHA completed the final design for this single lane roundabout which was selected as the preferred alternative over a signalized intersection. It dramatically improved safety and capacity at the intersection.
US 4 & Harris Hill Road Boscawen, NH
CHA designed this single lane roundabout at the intersection of US 4 and Harris Hill Road including approximately 1,300 feet of US 4 and 550 feet of Harris Hill Road. In less than 3 months, CHA completed the final design, contract plans and bid documents, drainage analysis and design, and traffic control plans.
Newport Road & County Road New London, NH
This roundabout was selected as the preferred alternative through a public outreach program. This federally funded project featured 2,000 feet of sidewalk extension, upgraded water mains, partial underground relocation of utilities, access management techniques, traffic calming features, landscaping/streetscaping, and a closed drainage system.
US Route 62 & NY Route 391 Hamburg, NY
This 18 mile reconstruction includes four roundabouts, pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, improved intersection geometry, traffic calming features, signal upgrades, additional turn lanes, a new drainage system, and highway lighting. CHA led design, alternatives development, an air quality and noise analysis, a fourday charrette, right-of-way acquisition, and construction sequencing. Awards Received: • 2009 APWA of Western New York Project of the Year Award - Transportation • 2009 ACEC-NY Platinum
