Who’s the boss? Davis and ‘Hoss’ Brownsboro teen takes top steer prize By Rich Flowers NEWS EDITOR
Taylor Davis of the Brownsboro FFA and his steer, “Hoss,” were an eye-catching pair at the Henderson County Livestock show and came away with the Grand Championship on Friday. The 1,255-pound entry, who almost matched Davis’s orange -plaid shirt, was judged best of the 50 steers in the show. Davis,
a Brownsboro junior, took first place in Class III, which also produced the Reserve Grand Champion, Grant Hirsch of Horizon 4H. Davis’s steer sold for $8,500 at the premium action on Saturday. Hirsch’s reserve grand earned a $5,000 payday. The Friday night show was Davis’ first time in the big Friday night event. “I was a little bit nervous at
first, but we worked through it,” Davis said. “I’ve shown pigs the last three or four years and game birds, but this is my first time for a steer.” The judge for the event was Gary Clayton, AgriLife Extension Agent for Wise County. He had high praise for the winner. “The steer out of Class III has a really long neck,”

The Athens Police Department answered numerous calls for break-ins and thefts over the weekend scattered around the city, and arrested two teens Saturday who are being investigated as having been involved in recent burglaries and criminal-mischief incidents. APD Lt. Michael Davis said the suspects are 14-year-old boys who were picked up in relation to a burglary at Lona Mauk’s State Farm Insurance in the 700 block of East Corsicana Street. The pair has been turned over to Henderson County Juvenile Detention authorities. APD dispatch received a call at 2:34 a.m., Saturday, reporting that an alarm had sounded at the State Farm Agency. Officer Marshall Passons responded to the location along with Cpl. Dana Dykes and Sgt. Jason McEntire. The officers found the teens inside the building. “We think it’s going to tie in, and clear up a lot of other criminal mischief in this area,” Davis said. “We’re not sure yet, but we think we might tie them into other burglaries.” Davis said the suspects are not likely to be behind the recent string of air-conditioner thefts in the area, at least not alone. “They would need to have some kind of vehicle for that,” Davis said. In addition to the State Farm burglary, three air conditioner condensers were reported taken on Saturday from Home Health Hospice at 1315 S. Palestine St. The owner said the units had been replaced just eight months ago. Also on Saturday, officials of the Air Force Recruiting Office at 113 S. Murchison St. told police that criminal mischief had been done to the back door of

SALINA, Kan. — If there was one thing that stood out on Trinity Valley Community College’s road to its seventh NJCAA women’s national title on Saturday night, it was one particular number. Seven. First-year head coach Elena Lovato’s Lady Cardinals won the seventh women’s basketball national title in school history over the Central Arizona Vaqueras, 83-71, at the Bicentennial Center on Kurt Budke Court. It was the Lady Cards’ second title in as many years.
The Lady Cards also had their seventh player claim tournament MVP honors in sophomore Shannon Smith, who scored 14 points in the championship game. Lovato ran her head coaching record to 77-7 overall. Oh, by the way, the game started as 7 p.m. Smith joins Shalonda Ennis (1994), Jennifer Sposato (1996), Betty Lennox (1997), Yalika Barnes (1999), Yolanda Jones (2004) and Keuna Flax (2012) as Lady Cards who have won tournament MVP honors.

“There is so much more going with this whole story,” Lovato said after the win. “I feel like the whole “Chasing Seven” thing was special and then we played the game at 7 p.m. and someone told me that my heading coaching record is 77-7. I almost feel like we were supposed to have had that forfeit so we could end the year with a bunch of seven’s ...” The No. 1 ranked team in the land and the No. 1 seed in the tournament finished the year with a 36-1 record. TVCC’s only loss came via a forfeit to Weatherford after the team was not able to field a starting five for their game.
Mabank Police Officer Mike Garner died from apparent natural causes Monday morning, according to Mabank Police Chief Kyle McAfee. McAfee said Garner did not show up for work on Monday, which was very unusual for him not to notify someone. He Garner said the police went to his home, and found him. Chief McAfee said “Officer Garner had not been feeling well, not with anything serious, like a cold or alergies.” Garner had been a familiar face around Cedar Creek Lake since the mid 1980s. He started his law enforcement career in Duncanville in 1979. In the early 1980s, he moved to Henderson County to take the role of Texas Alcohol, Beverage Control officer. Following his stint with TABC, he was with Gun Barrel City Police Department. Garner moved to the Mabank Police Department in 2000. Garner was reassigned as Mabank Independent School District resource officer in 2004. McAfee said he worked very closely with the school. Garner had been teaching a class on law enforcement at Mabank ISD. McAfee posted a message on the Mabank Police Department Facebook page that said, “Mike was very knowledgeable in the law-enforcement field, and was instrumental in the schools. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.” “He was my son's favorite teacher,” said Ruth van der Plaus, who's son, Oliver, was a student of Garner’s. “Oliver is very upset. He just couldn't believe it.” Funeral arrangements are pending with Eubanks Funeral Home in Mabank.
