Time For Warm and Cozy!
Are you ready for the Holidays? It seems like just yesterday we were kicking our air conditioners into high gear, but now it’s that time of year again! Warm and cozy gatherings with friends and family are near.
If you answered no to the previous question, then you’re probably dreading the time involved in “Decking the Halls” this year. Why not just sprinkle some holiday cheer in a few key areas to bring an instant update to your home without all the fuss!
Layering pictures and rustic elements helped bring some depth and interest to this Thanksgiving harvest mantel. Just add pumpkins!
Magical Mantels One perfect focal point to any home is your mantel, The warmth and nostalgia it portrays is unique and you need to have a spot to hang those stockings right? It’s a wonderful canvas to create a magical display of your holiday collections. Whether it be a collage of gourds and pumpkins inspired by a sign or picture you found one day, or just adding a few winter elements to your existing décor you can update your mantel with a warm and welcoming holiday expression. Even if you don’t have a fireplace it is easy to create that feeling with either an old fireplace mantel frame attached to a wall in a living room or hearth, or hang a large rustic shelf above your sofa or sidebar.
Braving The Elements Adding winter elements such as these beautiful snowflake ornaments to the existing urns and dĂŠcor, as well as a vintage picture of baby Jesus makes a magical update for Christmas gatherings.
Seasons Greetings Tabletops Another Key Area for holiday cheer is your tabletops. These are simple to create and really bring the holiday seasons to your family and friends front and center. Just choose something you have collected over the years and use that as your jumping off point, we grabbed some rustic scales to use as our serving pieces for a holiday party and worked with old coffee urns to create a Christmas cafĂŠ for your outdoor get together. This is the time of year to use what brings you back to your most treasured holiday memories.
Take your favorite garland and wind it through your display, who says garland has to hang on banisters?
Breaking bread with family and friends makes this table scale worthy.
“This is the time of year to use what brings you back to your most treasured holiday memories.”
Don’t forget to bring color to the table. Pulling the red from the apples in our garland helped define the color theme for the rest of the table. Vintage red glass votives for each place setting gives your guests aWWW.DESIGNERCONSIGNMENT.BIZ special touch of ambiance and warmth.
Festive Urns This antique coffee urn is stunning in glossy black, and is a great table starter even if it doesn’t work! Use it as your centerpiece as is, or add some Winter florals for an added jolt of color.
Try an unconventional twist to the average table. We grabbed an extra large urn (above), and topped it off with a round glass top, perfect for a Christmas cafĂŠ gathering of friends to snuggle up and enjoy some coffee or hot cocoa!
Holiday Garden Statues Don’t forget about those great garden statues, they enjoy getting some attention during this season as well. Savanna (above), is perfect for holding your gourds from the pumpkin patch, even pinecones and magnolia leaves for a hint of the holidays. Or use her like we did as our guest greater. Latte with two sugars please!

Sprinkles of Holiday Cheer Almost everyone has lanterns right? They are so versatile and great architectural additions to outside or inside spaces. Instead of candles, fill them with pinecones and wintergreens. We even threw in another vintage coffee urn for good measure (top right). Just adding some simple wintergreen gives so much color and texture to your dĂŠcor. This mini fireball (below left) was such a beautiful green already we just added a few friends to keep it company. Instead of a tree skirt how about an urn? We dressed up these outside urns (below right) and brought them in for Christmas. Use unusual and treasured items for your tree ornaments, and throw Christmas balls in some bowls instead.
Do you have a favorite Christmas c o l l e c t i o n ? We f o u n d t h e s e snowmen and gathered them up for a whimsical Winter wonderland display. Grouping collections like these really stuffs a stocking!
Tips for Decorating Outdoors Looking for a few ideas to spruce up your outdoor areas? Floraculture’s Vivian Pine offers some helpful tips! Mix faux greenery with fresh: you will get the fresh scent and less cleanup. Faux berries last longer than winterberry or holly which both burn & shatter in freezing temps. Select believable looking berries that are colorfast. Avoid the styrofoam berries with a thin coating. These will “pop” revealing their white center. Shop the produce department: apples, pomegranates, artichokes, oranges all can be added to outdoor arrangements for big impact and small dollars. Wiring thru the fruit or staking them on bamboo skewers both work well to anchor into your arrangements. Cut branches from your own shrubs & trees. Magnolia, pine, spruce & junipers are great for foliage. Redtwig Dogwood, Kerria, & Willow make great looking twigs. Flower heads from Hydrangea, Sedum, & Goldenrod can be collected & used dried or sprayed. A layer of clear-coat helps them last longer.
Go BIG. Huge pinecones (called sugar pine), are available at the nurseries. They show up great from the street. For a more modern look, spray paint them with a metallic finish or bright colors for extra cheer! More is better. The holidays are not the time to think small. Use a gigantic wreath or use lots of smaller ones. String garland around every window & door. Garage too. Don’t forget the gate, the fence, the lampposts. Keep the design simple but repeat, repeat, repeat. It makes for great impact. Light it up. Everything looks better with lights. Be sure to check for outages before you string them.
Snow Kissed
Just a few simple touches of Christmas cheer transform this living room to the perfect holiday hibernating destination. The best thing about a neutral sofa (below) is how easy they are to update every season! Just pack the Summer pillows and bring out the crimson red and your half way there. Adding a cozy faux fur throw for comfort and texture will keep your loved ones nestled by the fire. Christmas balls, oh so many pretty ones! Mixing vintage with modern always gives that great collected eclectic look. Why not put your favorites in a bowl on your end table or coffee table so you can really enjoy how they sparkle by the fire. When I think of Christmas I enjoy the rustic elements of winter, so bringing in an old white bench for a coffee table was a great addition and gives more space to a small room. I also added baskets underneath for storage of favorite magazines and maybe a present or two for guests!
We layered this stunning candle wall sconce over the existing mirror and used a large pinecone in the center with bright holiday foliage. You could even spray the pinecone your favorite holiday color for added interest, or use your favorite candle to flicker in its reflection.
Jingle All Snow The Way Kissed
Santa is coming to town, why not make him feel welcome! We grouped an old collection of Santa’s from vintage to now, for a festive living room focal point. Use old trunks, vintage books, and lanterns to bring layers, color and height to your vignette. Large metal grilles look great as an alternative to a flat picture and the candlelight dances off them! What a great backdrop to your sofa, guests will enjoy the view.
Stack vintage Christmas books (right) to bring nostalgia and the perfect platform for your favorite Santa!
Gathering lanterns and birdcages adds a rustic touch as well as giving light and depth to this Santa theme.
Don’t forget the coffee table (just make sure to save room for coffee!) Vivian took a great metal serving piece from Designer Consignment and created a beautiful holiday centerpiece with real apples incase your guests need a midnight snack!
Get Some Fresh Air Move out to the sunroom, if heated or blanket wealthy! We brought the theme through here with a collection of vintage sleds and some hanging others waiting for Santa to have his cookies and milk after a long nights work. This wonderful large red vintage sled is a perfect container for all your presents this year, it could even be used as a coffee table, just add glass!
Remember the kids, in our case the Twins!  It’s easy to make a colorful Christmas centerpiece with candy, cookies and cocoa.
Keeping the tradition alive we used an old buckboard as seating for the little ones and found this sweet antique bicycle for inspiration under the tree.
Use large glass containers and grandmas cut glass letting the dessert be the decor.
Happy Holidays! Festive Mugs always bring cheer to a child's cocoa dreams!
