Unit of Inquiry
4A NEWS Numeracy We are presently finishing the geometry unit, shape and space. For the past two weeks students explored the following concepts and skills: *The characteristics of basic three-dimensional solids including polyhedrons *Perimeter and area of triangles and quadrilaterals, and volume of cubes and rectangular prisms. *The circumference and area of a circle *The vocabulary and mathematical formulas associated with circles, polygons, solids, and polyhedrons For the next unit, students will revisit and explore in greater depth the concepts and skills required to understand, use and apply fractions and decimal fractions.
Language
Students will revisit informational writing in this unit, How we organize ourselves. We will focus on cause and effect writing and review persuasive writing. Your child will have a number of writing assignments connected to the unit and to topics of their own choosing, with which to develop and practice this skill. In reading, your child continues to read at least thirty minutes in school either individually or with a partner or group. During the next six weeks, as part of our unit, we will be reading and note taking on non-fiction texts. Students are required to read at least 30 minutes per day at home. Please see to it that your child has books available at home and is reading.
