4C New Dear Families: Forgive the delay in getting the latest news from 4C to you. I hope this letter finds you well. It has been wonderful having you at the school for the recent Fourth Grade Parent Coffee and 4C’s Imagination Display. Thank you for all of your support!

Unit of Inquiry As the How We Express Ourselves unit recently came to a close, students were able to make personal reflections about their work in a number of entries in their inquiry journals. In the last two weeks, we have begun our fourth unit, How the World Works. We are looking at crises to develop an understanding of how organizations address individual and group needs during disasters, global events and emergencies. In 4-C, we began by exploring the world’s water crisis. The students are already showing a real thirst for knowledge as it relates to this unit. Central Idea of the Unit: Organizations allow people to come together to take sustainable action. Concepts: function responsibility causation

Book Groups During this unit, we are putting a direct emphasis on conducting literacy circles and discussing reading strategies to improve fluency and to increase interest in books. Some of the book titles that we have read are directly related to our unit of inquiry. Others are stand-alone picture books and novels that fourth graders typically enjoy. Ask your child about the books that he or she is reading as a means of discovering possible authors that might be good to read at home during free time. Recent books that we have been reading in 4C: Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence At water The Minpins by Roald Dahl Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl a collection of American Tall Tales by Mary Pope Osborne One Well: The Story of Water on Earth by Rochelle Strauss Tsunami by Kimiko Kajikawa Water, Water Everywhere by Cynthia Overbeck Bix

Numeracy We are completing a geometry unit where we looked at the characteristics of two and three-dimensional shapes. Additionally, we focused on the creation of congruent circles while using a compass and we used formulas to calculate the radius, the diameter, the area and the circumference those circles. Dance/P.E. Congratulations to the fourth graders for an exciting and dynamic dance/ basketball performance during the “Dolphins Like to Move It show!
