Halloween It has been a fun, but busy week in 4-C! We enjoyed the Halloween festivities, including the parade and the special nighttime event for families. Thank you for all of the organization, time and planning that went into making sure that the holiday ran seamlessly in 4-C. Unit of Inquiry Our unit on health and well being continued with guiding questions to deepen our understanding of what incorporates healthy living. This week, we examined big ideas in the unit, looking at the following questions… *What are the connections between lifestyle and health? *What factors contribute to a balanced lifestyle? *How do diet and exercise and the ability to manage stress contribute to physical and mental health? 1

We also began unpacking the central idea of the unit by reading a number of articles on the Time for Kids website. One of the highlights of the week, came as we examined menus from restaurants. The students had observations about how menus are designed and how this impacts the food choices that we make as consumers. They went further in their learning by asking questions like… Why don’t all restaurants list calories and fat?-Rex Why aren’t there more pictures of the food on menus?-Yujin Why doesn’t every restaurant include descriptions of the foods that they are selling to people?-Christian We took note of a variety of perspectives and details that goes into planning healthy eating. In addition, we discussed the six nutrients (vitamins, minerals, fat, carbohydrates, protein and water) and how they work in tandem to help our bodies to function. 2

Reminders: - We have PE Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Please bring PE clothing, PE shoes and a water bottle with your name on it. - Please bring a healthy snack every day.

Numeracy This week in numeracy, we examined multiplication strategies as a means of expanding our toolbox of resources when it comes to manipulating numbers. We have been experimenting with standard multiplication, the partial-products algorithm and the lattice method, determining which strategy works effectively when problem-solving.

- HOUSE is Friday. Bring PE shoes, your Chadwick House shirt, and your water bottle. Go Earth! Go Fire! Go Water! Go Air!

Literacy As we worked to link our writing to the Unit of Inquiry, we wrote persuasive paragraphs about health. We used a format where we stated our opinions, provided at least two reasons for our beliefs, gave examples and ended the piece with one final opinion. The writing was compelling and conducive of the learning we are doing about the factors that affect health.
