Unit of Inquiry Currently, we have been working to unpack our latest unit in innovative ways. We are working with the central idea that people’s lifestyle choices can determine their health and well-being. In recent days, we have had visits from experts on wellness, including Dr. Rhee, a pediatrician and Chadwick International parent who discussed the importance of nutrients for the body and the impact that sleep has on our ability to function on a daily basis. The fourth graders prepared questions for Dr. Rhee and took meticulous notes in their inquiry journals about her answers to their most pressing concerns about health. 1
In the days that followed, we had demonstrations and question-and-answer sessions with... Heidi Mines, a Zumba teacher Mr. White, third grade teacher and marathon runner Ms. Keller, yoga enthusiast Ms. Rose, Pilates instructor Ms. Frasier, meditation dabbler
All of these experiences have allowed the students to further their thinking about both physical and mental health.
As the students worked on self-directed projects this week, I saw a commitment to expanding their personal knowledge about health. Groups were working on posters about bones, muscles, cells and yoga. Some students were creating restaurant menus using the Choose My Plate motto as their backdrop. Additionally, other students were converting their persuasive paragraphs into longer and more detailed persuasive letters. 2

Numeracy In number work, the students printed their daily schedules and calculated the hours that they spent doing things like sleeping, eating, working at school and exercising over the course of a week. They used a division strategy to convert these hours into percentages. They are in the process of creating pie graphs using an online tool to visually represent this information. Literacy We have read a number of books about our unit of inquiry. Students enjoyed taking titles like The Hard Stuff !: All About Bones and Get Moving!: All About Muscles home with them this week. 3
