Chadwick School:

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Margaret Chadwick founded Chadwick Seaside School in 1935 with an optimistic and expansive vision: creating an outstanding coeducational, experiential and character-based learning environment where all children would thrive. Her educational philosophy soon won benefactors, leading to Chadwick School as we know it today.

A multigenerational legacy of philanthropic support has been essential to Chadwick School’s success. Transformative gifts of land and buildings from the Vanderlip, Roessler and Warnock families established Chadwick’s campus and allowed the school to grow. Now, the Annual Fund, endowed funds, and major and planned gifts enhance our students’ present opportunities and ensure resources for the future.

Your gifts of time, talent and treasure have made Chadwick a global educational leader, inspired faculty and students, and benefited thousands of alumni.

The ongoing support of the Chadwick community — our parents, alumni parents, trustees, alumni, current and former faculty and staff, and friends — has sustained Chadwick’s Mission of developing global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge and the ability to lead. Your gifts of time, talent and treasure have made Chadwick a global educational leader, inspired our faculty and students, and benefited thousands of alumni.

Happily, Chadwick’s future looks as bright as its storied past. Under the leadership of Head of School Jessica Donovan, Chadwick remains dedicated to providing every student with a world-class educational experience, firmly grounded in our shared Core Values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Fairness and Compassion. We see the value of this Missionfocused approach every day as we watch our students grow into remarkable young people.

We are grateful for your commitment to Chadwick School — without you, none of this would be possible. As we celebrate Chadwick’s 90th anniversary in 2025, we will celebrate each of you as well. Thank you for all you do in support of our students and the entire Chadwick community.

Head of School From the

Dear Chadwick Community,

Thank you for making my first year as Head of School so memorable! I could not be more proud and grateful for your investment in Chadwick's Mission and your dedication to our Core Values.

Some of the highlights from the 2023-24 school year, include:

We proudly celebrated the 82 members of the Class of 2024. This talented group of seniors received 497 offers of admission from 198 colleges and universities and are now attending 57 different institutions. These colleges and universities include many of the most selective research universities and liberal arts colleges, flagship state universities, engineering colleges and institutes, and top performing and visual arts colleges.

Chadwick took a bold step in strengthening our real-world learning experiences by establishing a new partnership with AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles. AltaSea brings together educators, researchers and entrepreneurs to drive ocean-related innovation, sustainability and marine exploration. Their educational partners include CalTech, UCLA, USC and Chadwick School. The new Chadwick School Ocean Institute and Community Learning Lab at AltaSea allows our students to experience real-world, hands-on research and design, and to partner with educators and students from communities throughout L.A. County.

Last spring, we held our fourth annual Social Justice Day, where students, faculty and staff were inspired to take an active role in strengthening a sense of belonging for all members of our community. Guest speakers, workshops and presentations highlighted the theme: “Words Matter: Elevate, Empower, Educate.”

Our parents continued to selflessly and energetically contribute to strengthening our community by volunteering their time and support. Our Annual Fund surpassed $1.6 million, this year’s Spring Event “Par-Tee” raised $185,000 to support the renovation of Christensen Hall and Brogan Deck, and the 14th Annual Golf Tournament raised $50,000 to renovate the Leavenworth Library Story Corner.

Chadwick honored Ruth and Roger MacFarlane by naming the Middle School Courtyard the MacFarlane Family Courtyard. The MacFarlanes began their time at Chadwick as parents, whose children, Taryn ’94, Alex ’95, Katherine ’05 and Jessica ’07, all graduated from Chadwick. Ruth and Roger are leaving a philanthropic legacy and a profound impact on the Chadwick community. The sign and plaque in the MacFarlane Family Courtyard will forever stand as a testament to our gratitude for their generosity.

There are so many other ways that we have strengthened our community this year. Because of your commitment, we are able to continue to provide our students with a quality education.

Sincerely,

ROESSLER-CHADWICK FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES

YESTERDAY

Nearly 90 years on, Chadwick strives to keep the spirit of its founder, Margaret Chadwick, and its Mission alive today — one of many reasons Chadwick still feels like an extended family to its community members. Throughout Chadwick’s history, alumni have remained actively involved as trustees, mentors, donors, faculty and staff, and current and alumni parents. Their ongoing support provides diverse perspectives and continuity that add to the enduring effect of the Chadwick educational experience. From the richness of the archives to annual reunions and alumni awards, to myriad alumni gatherings across the country, the Chadwick community works to honor the past while welcoming new viewpoints, opportunities and traditions.

“Chadwick has been an integral part of my journey into adulthood. Long before I became an employee in 2022, I remained closely connected to the school because it played a significant role in shaping who I am today. The education I received, the athletic opportunities I was fortunate to participate in, and the guidance from inspiring teachers have all contributed to my personal and professional successes. Staying connected to Chadwick allows me to give back to a place that continues to influence my life in meaningful ways.”

“Chadwick has been a part of my family's journey for quite some time now. As a parent of two current students and as an alumnus, I stay connected to Chadwick with the hopes of positively contributing to the school in any way possible. Building upon an already strong Chadwick community will benefit all its constituents and, especially, our future generations of leaders in the world. I believe that we all have a role in ensuring that Chadwick remains a special institution.”

Annual Giving Recognizing

All gifts to Chadwick School are greatly appreciated and because Annual Giving contributions support Chadwick’s current operations and highest priority needs each year, special recognition is afforded to donors who directly support Chadwick’s Annual Fund or Delphinus Operating Fund for Financial Aid, or who make restricted annual gifts to current operations. Recognition levels are determined by the total dollar amount of gifts, including employer matching gifts.

contributions are recognized separately at the events or by the parent organizations. Gifts to endowed funds, including the general endowment, support the long-term growth of the school rather than current operations and are honored separately as well.

In addition, this list celebrates consecutive years of giving by individuals. It is a testament to the loyalty and commitment of the Chadwick community that so many consistently support the school over multiple years.

Contributions from donors recognized here represent more than $1.99 million in Annual Giving to Chadwick in 2023–24.

As with all of our efforts to thank and recognize donors, every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of our information. If your records differ from ours, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement so we may update our files.

Contributions to sponsor or underwrite events or to support parent organizations are not direct contributions to current operations and therefore are not included in Annual Giving recognition. Such

We are deeply grateful to all members of the Chadwick community who include Annual Giving to Chadwick in their philanthropic plans each year. Thank you!

Each year, Chadwick School’s Annual Fund bridges the gap between tuition income and the cost of providing an exceptional education. How does it accomplish this? The Annual Fund benefits every student and teacher at Chadwick by expanding essential operating funds with philanthropic gifts from the extended Chadwick Community.

These investments support many of the experiences that make a Chadwick education meaningful and memorable. From worldclass academics to the Outdoor Education and Community Service programs, from athletics to performing and visual arts, and beyond, our community's philanthropic commitment supports and celebrates the multifaceted potential of every K–12 student.

“Through the years, it has been evident that support of Chadwick's Annual Fund continues to enrich our children’s lives and strengthen their learning environment while supporting this amazing community."

THINH

Fund Annual

All monies raised through the Chadwick Annual Fund are used to support the operating budget in the same academic year that they are contributed.

Thanks to the generosity of Annual Fund donors, Chadwick students enjoy enhanced opportunities in all areas of campus life and learning. We thank the following 2023–24 Annual Fund donors for their commitment to making every academic and co-curricular program at Chadwick outstanding for our students.

TOTAL GIVING TO THE ANNUAL FUND $1.73 MILLION

Chadwick relies on a committed group of volunteers to reach out to members of our community for their support of the Annual Fund. These volunteers write letters, make phone calls and assist with planning to help raise funds to support Chadwick’s students, faculty and programs. We are deeply grateful for their hard work, leadership and gifts of time to the school.

TOMORROW

While focused on providing current students with an exceptional education, Chadwick’s leadership and faculty must also anticipate, and plan for, the future. This dual responsibility leads to innovative approaches that combine multidisciplinary experiential learning, new technology, global and ethical leadership, and wellness education to benefit students. Recent future-focused initiatives include the Chadwick Ocean Institute and Community Learning Lab at AltaSea, week-long Chadwick Immersion Program options for Middle School students, Chadwick’s enhanced Wellness Program, and the Outdoor Living and Learning Spaces.

The ongoing commitment of Chadwick’s philanthropic supporters, particularly those who have established endowments, ensure that Chadwick and its Mission will continue in the decades ahead.

“We had an amazing experience during our time at Chadwick, whether it was in the classroom, on the athletic fields and courts, the performing arts, outdoor education trips, or just hanging out on the Main Lawn. We are forever grateful for the teachers that helped shape who we are today, and we started the Chadwick Alumni Endowment Fund to give other alumni the opportunity to give back to the school in a way that creates a permanent source of funding for the school’s highest priorities.”

KIA (RODE) WESTHEAD ’87

Chadwick alumna PAUL C. WESTHEAD ’85 Chadwick alumnus and past Roessler-Chadwick Foundation Board Trustee

AlumniAnnual Giving From

For many alumni, gifts to Chadwick are opportunities to pay tribute to the school that has helped them become who they are today. Many also honor classmates and teachers, celebrate reunions and recognize other special milestones with their giving.

We are extremely grateful to our alumni, whose giving ensures that the Chadwick experience remains consistently exceptional for every student in every year.

Ruth and Roger MacFarlane Chadwick Honors Visionary Leaders

This spring, Chadwick School celebrated Ruth and Roger MacFarlane’s three decades of dedication to the Chadwick community with the naming of the MacFarlane Family Courtyard (formerly the Middle School Courtyard) in their honor. The MacFarlanes were also recognized at the Legacy Dinner in March 2024, where their four adult children — Taryn ’94, Alex ’95, Katherine ’05 and Jessica ’07 — joined school leadership, Johnson Legacy Society members, Trustees and Past Trustees to salute them.

The MacFarlane family joined the Chadwick community as parents in 1987. Over time, their roles expanded exponentially as they became tireless volunteers, Annual Fund Co-Chairs, committed philanthropic leaders and, in Ruth’s case, a distinguished long-term Roessler-Chadwick Foundation Trustee and now, Trustee Emerita.

In 2007, the MacFarlanes made a transformative $1million dollar gift to Chadwick to establish the MacFarlane Leadership Scholarship Endowment Fund.

In 2007, the MacFarlanes made a transformative $1million dollar gift to Chadwick to establish the MacFarlane Leadership Scholarship Endowment Fund. This fund helps to educate tomorrow’s leaders by ensuring that students with strong leadership potential, academic excellence and financial need have access to a Chadwick education. The MacFarlane Scholars program supports 12 Upper School students, 3 in each grade from 9th–12th. To date, Chadwick has 21 MacFarlane Scholar alumni, with 12 more Scholars currently enrolled in the Upper School.

Years later, in partnership with the Tambour Foundation, Ruth and Roger established two more endowed funds — the Center for Ethical, Global Leadership Endowment Fund and the MacFarlane Leadership Development Fund. These endowments also support the MacFarlane Scholars program, providing enhanced leadership development and domestic and global travel opportunities.

The Chadwick community offers its deepest gratitude to the MacFarlanes for all they have done to strengthen Chadwick and positively impact the lives of students, far into the future.

Funds Endowment

Endowment funds are financial assets that generate income through effective investment of the principal. Portions of this income are used to relieve the operating budget and, when substantial enough, to help minimize tuition increases. Contributions may be made to existing funds, or new funds may be established through major gifts. Endowment funds are frequently established to honor or remember someone of significance to the school. We are especially grateful to those donors who have established the endowment funds that provide security for our future.

Erica Thompson '89 Planned Giving Donor

Erica Thompson ’89 shared her experience at Chadwick School and her decision to make a planned gift to safeguard the school’s future in the interview below. (Her remarks have been edited for length.)

Why Chadwick? How did you end up attending the school?

Erica: It began with a summer that felt like pure magic. My mom always urged me to stretch my artistic wings, so every summer she would search for exceptional programs that would nurture my creativity. At 12, I had the opportunity to participate in the Chadwick Summer Program. Little did I know that experience would be a turning point in my life. Being on the Chadwick campus that summer felt like entering a different world. All the greenery and natural wood bungalows that served as classrooms along with the open-air amphitheater — it was a stark contrast to the concrete jungle I was used to at my school.

What stood out most was the fact that every kid there was pursuing a different creative passion, all in the same place. I was instantly comfortable at Chadwick it was so vibrant and welcoming, and there was support and encouragement to explore my artistic side. During that summer, my family and I decided I should apply for a spot in Chadwick’s seventh grade, the Class of 1989. I was accepted, and the rest was history!

What were you involved in as a student?

Erica: I wasn’t the sporty type. I gravitated more toward languages and visual arts. I became fluent in Spanish and spent countless hours in the art and ceramic studios.

What are your favorite memories of being a student at Chadwick?

Erica: My biggest Chadwick memories actually didn't take place on campus! The countless afternoons at my friends' homes are what I most associate with my years at Chadwick. Those hours of studying, laughing and simply having fun are what I remember — it was during those moments that I discovered the true meaning of friendship and genuine connections.

What did Chadwick teach you? How did attending impact you?

Erica: Chadwick wasn’t just a school. It was an experience that I hold dear and that continues to impact my life today. Chadwick taught me about friendship, understanding, knowledge, inspiration, opportunities, effective communication, maintaining good relationships, managing time and projects, problem solving, reaching goals and having fun along the way!

What does Chadwick School mean to you?

Erica: Chadwick created a safe haven for me to be a kid, to explore and to grow into the person I am today. I was encouraged to be myself and found acceptance there. There isn’t one activity, person or experience that I credit; it was the environment as a whole that helped instill values and tools that are a source of strength for me today as I navigate life.

How are you involved as a Chadwick alumna?

Erica: I joined the Chadwick Alumni Board. It’s been great to reconnect with my fellow alumni, swap stories of our time at Chadwick and contribute to future endeavors.

Why did you include Chadwick in your estate plans?

Erica: I recently made a pledge to the Johnson Legacy Society to contribute and to continue creating financial opportunities for deserving students to attend Chadwick.

Legacy Society Francis J. and Frank L. Johnson

The Frances J. and Frank L. Johnson Legacy Society was established in 1996 by Frank Johnson ’47 and Jacqueline Johnson Kehle ’56 in memory of their parents, Frances and Frank Johnson. It was created to acknowledge those members of the Chadwick community who provide for Chadwick through deferred gifts such as bequests, trusts or other planned gifts.

Thank you to all who have included Chadwick in your estate plans. Your support is greatly appreciated.

14TH ANNUAL CHADWICK SCHOOL GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 14th Annual Chadwick Golf Tournament was a huge success, welcoming 138 golfers and other friends of Chadwick back to the Palos Verdes Golf Club for a great day of fun and community. Thank you to the many trustees, volunteers, alumni, students, parents, past parents, sponsors and friends who participated this year. All proceeds, $96,363, will go toward immediate use for the school, including $50,000 to complete this year's Leavenworth Library Story Corner Renovation Project.

Thank you to Golf Tournament Co-Chairs Damien Goldberg ’91, Collin West and Jamie McCrary and their committee for their dedicated leadership. Their efforts guaranteed a memorable day on the course, a spirited auction and a lively evening reception.

A special thank you to all the generous event donors! We appreciate your gracious donations of auction items, event food and beverages. Your support helped make the event a day to remember.

Organizations Parent

Chadwick’s parent volunteers are an irreplaceable part of the school’s daily life. On any given day, members can be found on campus, whether working in Leavenworth Library, transporting community service student volunteers, leading Spirit Day celebrations, planning events, or cheering on student actors and musicians. They also support the school financially through their many successful fundraising events and programs. Thank you to all members of our Chadwick Parents Association, Friends of the Library, Chadwick Booster Club and Performing Arts Limelighters for all you do to create a welcoming and dynamic experience for our students and families.

The Chadwick Parents Association is an organization made up of all parents of Chadwick students. Its purpose is to support the school and the school community. The CPA coordinates Village Room Parents and Middle and Upper School Parent Representatives, supports parents and families by helping parents become better acquainted, raises funds in support of Chadwick, and helps foster and improve communications between parents and the school. The group organizes a plethora of events and activities throughout the year to enhance the Chadwick experience for students and families. Numerous volunteers donate thousands of hours each year through the CPA.

In 2023–24, the CPA again organized the annual K–12 Family Fall Fest, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Winter Holiday Party, the Multicultural Food Festival, and many other cherished parent events. This year’s Spring Event, the Spring Par-Tee, was a sporty success at TopGolf. Co-Chairs Christie Gleason and Kameron Smith and their committee teed up a lively evening that raised $180,000 in support of the CPA’s 2023—24 funding priority—the renovation of Christensen Hall and the Brogan Deck Outdoor Living and Learning Spaces. Many thanks to all the volunteers and donors who contributed to the event’s success! We are truly appreciative of the CPA for all the ways it strengthens our school community.

Global Opportunities

Chadwick provides a student exchange program with the Chadwick International campus in Songdo, South Korea, and through other international exchange programs. The CPA helps mobilize K–12 Chadwick host families for these exchange students. The student exchanges between campuses provide immersive, memorable experiences for families and students alike.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Chadwick proudly supports diversity, equity and inclusion in our community by encouraging the development and growth of parent affinity and allyship groups. These groups provide affirming spaces for families that share common identities and heritage with others in the Chadwick community. Each year, the affinity groups sponsor the Winter Holiday Party for all Chadwick families. All Chadwick affinity groups are inclusive and welcoming to allies and other community members who wish to be supportive. Several groups are now operating under the Chadwick Parents Association, and plans are underway to develop more.

Visual Arts Squad

The Visual Arts Squad is comprised of K–12 parent volunteers who believe that a strong arts education is a sound investment in the overall development of our students. Members support the department throughout the year, donating their time and resources to enhance the program. Opportunities for involvement include assisting with hospitality at art shows, coordinating the department’s donations for the Spring Event, promoting programs and events, and more.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

The mission of the Friends of the Library (FOL) is to promote literacy and the love of reading in the Chadwick community and to support the Chadwick Leavenworth Library and librarians. In addition to providing financial resources, the FOL sponsors visiting authors and illustrators, manages the Book Talks and Sneak Peeks, and organizes and implements the Village PALs program. The FOL also works with Chadwick’s Community Service program on literacy projects in the broader Los Angeles community and organizes the much-anticipated Chadwick Book Fair. FOL members give countless volunteer hours each year to support and enhance library and literacy programs in Grades K to 12.

The FOL organized popular new initiatives for students and parents in 2023–24: Bookworms, Story Heroes, the Parent and Faculty Book Club, and a book swap. All four programs work to bring Chadwick community members together to share the joy of a good book. The FOL also hosted two visiting authors this year. The New York Times bestselling author of the “Spy School” series, Stuart Gibbs, conducted a writing workshop for students in Grades 3 to 6. Phyllis Fagell, author of “Middle School Matters,” gave a well-received presentation to parents of fifth- through eighth-grade students, in collaboration with the Chadwick Health and Wellness Team.

Chadwick gratefully acknowledges the Friends of the Library for their support of the school and its library and literacy programs.

CHADWICK BOOSTER CLUB

The Booster Club's purpose is to support and promote the athletic objectives and programs of Chadwick School, including sports teams in the Middle and Upper Schools and physical education in the Village School. Throughout the year, the Booster Club promotes attendance at all sporting events, recruits sports representatives for every team, organizes spirit days, sells spirit wear and hosts the Chili Cook-Off. The Booster Club works hard to encourage the entire K–12 community to participate in Chadwick's community-building athletic traditions.

In 2023–24, the Booster Club also made a generous gift of $25,000 in support of the school. Chadwick gratefully acknowledges the Booster Club for its impressive efforts on behalf of the school's athletics program and sports teams. Go Dolphins!

CHADWICK LIMELIGHTERS

The Limelighters' mission is to encourage students to participate in Chadwick's Performing Arts programs, including chorus, dance, improv, orchestra and theater, while supporting department objectives. Limelighters representatives serve as liaisons between Village School, Middle School and Upper School Performing Arts faculty and the Chadwick parent community for volunteer solicitation and supplemental support.

Throughout the 2023–24 school year, the Limelighters provided hundreds of meals for students attending evening and weekend rehearsals in all arenas of the performing arts. Limelighters also provided dinners during tech weeks and performance evenings for the Upper School productions “She Kills Monsters” and “Legally Blonde.” Limelighters volunteers served as ushers at the Laverty Center, provided decor and intermission refreshments for performances, coordinated telegrams for performers and created promotional items for cast members. Additionally, the Limelighters hosted faculty receptions before two major productions. In 2023–24, the Limelighters again facilitated two Village School educational assemblies with performers from The Music Center.

We thank the Limelighters for their commitment to helping all Chadwick students experience the joy and teamwork of the performing arts.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
