CHELSEA LEE-BASTABLE

EMMA JENKINS

Chàe Magazine consists of a team of four students, who are passionate about the need to help people. The name ‘Chàe’ comes from the idea of unity and togetherness, as the name formed from the beginning letter of each members name. As individuals, the Chàe Team had different ideas of how they planned to help other students through digital media and communications. It wasn’t until the idea of a magazine came to mind, all members found a way to be creative and passionate in the ways in which they planned to help other people. All undertaking a Bachelor of Communication and Media at the University of Wollongong, they found that there wasn’t one place where students could find all the everyday help they needed to get through their University journey. This is where the idea of Chàe Magazine became a reality. We at Chàe Magazine hope you enjoy our first issue!

This Christmas season isn’t always going to be happy; for many reasons it can be a difficult time of year for people affected by mental illness. During this time if you or someone you know has any mental health concerns, talk to someone because you are not alone. It is okay to not be okay; it's okay to talk to someone and it's okay to ask for help. One in five Australians live with mental illness each year and only 35 per cent of people experiencing mental illness symptoms seek help from health services.

WHAT TO BRING:

TO UNI

If you're attending a University thats an hour away or even 10 minutes from home - you'll need some essentials to bring in ur backpack or tote. So here is a short list of some things I store in my bag that I bring to Uni, that might help you compile you're own survival kit. Portable Charger + Cable Not only does the cable come in handy to sync files from my phone to my laptop, but you never know how long you're going to be at Uni, so it's smart to be prepared. Hand Sanitiser This ones not just for the germ-a-phobes, its essential to have this in your backpack because you never know what'll spill or what you'll touch. Maybe there isn't any soap in the bathroom? BOOM you don't have to worry. Lip Balm Now this all depends on your self care routine, but I find its essential to carry this in my bag 24/7 Water Bottle Not only will this one save you money but it's also more environmentally friendly. University's have drinking fountains to fill up youre bottles as well

Earphones This ones good if you're an introvert and just need to be in your own space, or you need to hit the books and focus during a study session. Tissues Just like the hand sanitiser you never know when you'll have to clean something up. Also if sniffle season hits you too fast, you'll be super prepared. Deodorant/Perfume/Cologne You don't want to be the one person giving some funky vibes. To make sure you're at least smelling fresh even if you're stressed. Mints or Gum Goes hand in hand with the perfume, you don't want to be in the midst of a group project and be giving off some funky scents when you open your mouth to talk. No one wants to smell your lunch. Bamboo Utensils Again, this item is one for the environmentally friendly. If you buy your lunch at Uni, instead of grabbing one of the single use utensils buy some bamboo utensils to keep in your bag. A bamboo knife and fork is also alot more safe than caring around plastic or mental utensils.

OPPORTUNITIES OUTSIDE OF UNI WRITTEN BY EMMA JENKINS

Leaving school can be rough when you might not have a set goal or your path doesn't include University. There are so many options out there and people might not even know they can do these, so here is a list if you are feeling a bit stuck:

GAP YEAR

One of the best things a student can do sometimes is have time to yourself and just enjoy a year off. Either doing some travelling, getting casual jobs or just relaxing. It's a benefit as it allows you to think of where you want to see yourself in a few years and might clear up a few questions you have.

TAFE A simple way to get a certificate and be able to work, I did an online course that took two days to get my RSA. It works well for those who are flexible and is still seen as good as a uni degree for jobs. APPRENTICESHIP

Another job that is good is becoming a tradesman

can

lead

you

to

endless

opportunities. The perks are job security, the pay can be great, traveling to different parts of the city or even beyond that and being able to have flexibility with work.

22 |Â CHĂ€E MAGAZINE

START WORKING Just start working, if you have a dream that you have always wanted or just want to get a job to have money, go for it! start saving now and prepare for later on, the more work experience you have earlier on will help you so much in the future.

OVERSEAS WORK Take any opportunities you can to further your experience and knowledge whether that means travelling overseas with your workplace or moving over there to take a job, these experiences will help in the future. Seeing different countries and working at the same time is amazing.

FEELING LOST IN UNI Being unsure of where you might be at is a common feeling, but there are options in uni you can seek out such as: Traveling and studying at a different uni for your course and seeing how it is being taught over. It's also flexible with the time you want to spend over there studying and enjoying the experience (which looks great when you graduate) Trying out different classes and seeing if you want to change Change your degree and look at what is interesting you now and what is available to you Take some time off and debrief on what your goals were originally to what they are now, and focus on what you want to acheive at the end of the day. 23 |Â CHĂ€E MAGAZINE

YOU CAN ALWAYS BE OKAY

Kaitlin Miller

At age three I was diagnosed with a possible Plexiform Neurofibroma but even to this day a definite diagnosis is yet to be obtained.

Kaitlin Miller You can always be okay Everyone’s ears are meant to hear and everyone’s hands are meant to be one of their biggest support systems in life. Unfortunately for some, like me, that just isn’t the case. Even though at one point of my life that wasn’t okay, it is now.

At age three I was diagnosed with a possible Plexiform Neurofibroma but even to this day a definite diagnosis is yet to be obtained. To put it simply, I have a tumour in the median nerve of my right palm. This consists of overgrown nerves and fatty tissue that puts tremendous strain on my nerves in my hand making it very painful almost daily. Unfortunately pain medication does not stop the pain in my hand, it stops other bodily pain that occurs due to the strain that is put on my body because of the tumour - such as migraines. At age 5 I was the youngest person in New South Wales to undergo carpal tunnel surgery to relieve as much pressure as possible from my wrist and hand to give me the best start to my schooling career as possible. Although pain is almost constant, I consider myself to be very lucky as I have not had to be a fighter of a cancerous tumour and I thank my lucky stars every day for that. And to answer the question I get asked over and over again, removal of the tumour at this time of my life is not an option. The surgery would mean that the surgeons would have to cut into my nerves to remove it meaning that use of my hand would be non-existent. Maybe later in life that may be an option for me but at this time of my life it is not for the best.

FINDING MY WAY: THE JOURNEY OF INVISIBLE CHRONIC ILLNESS A Poem Written by Susie Ray @findyourownhope findyourownhope.com

I do not know where this path is going to take me. This journey sometimes makes me feel like I’m lost and as though I can’t see ahead or into the future. I can’t make plans in advance because I don’t know how I’ll be feeling by then. It feels like I’m hiking and, I have lost my map that helps me find my way. I can’t see anything ahead through all the fog of the unknown. But the one thing I still have is a compass. That tells me which way is forward. So I just keep walking through it all, because I hope one day the clouds will clear and I’ll get to see the beautiful view again. The thing about life is that we can always rely on change. Life is forever changing. It is never stagnant. So there’s hope it’ll change for you yet. Just keep your compass with you and don’t worry, you don’t need a map because the universe and your instincts will guide you - just make sure you are listening out for them. 37 | CHÀE MAGAZINE

THE BLINDNESS OF EAGERNESS Poem Written By: Omotoyosi Salami.

I asked my mother what the cost of having light is whether radiating it or having stolen it spied on it when I wasn't supposed to when I had no right and burned out my eyes What will I like more than to open my throat and let these wordsflow on the spot and not tangle in my tongue I know these things I asked my lover once 'Is all this noise worth the light?' these eyes, these wagging tongues people always see and we can lie, or we can hide, or we can seduce beneath the sun's eye What is the point of having light all this light in me and still having to hide still tripping over my own damn tongue I was born with a curse of wanting to escape my skin there is no skin I have not lusted for no hand I have not envied no destiny I have not wanted for my own I told my mother all this light was hurting my eyes and she said sorry and laughed at me when I mistook her lover for my father 41 |Â CHĂ€E MAGAZINE

MADDIE Poem Written By: Omotoyosi Salami

We were never meant for all this. We were never meant to bump shadows in the first place, to link hands, to dance the dance of the dragons. But there are consequences for things; somebody should have told us this in the beginning. Somebody should have reminded me that I am an only child a single tear, not to be shed just yet, especially not on a bloody failed comedian. I hate to feel like this. I hate this shivering, this trembling, this looking but not seeing. I hate this night party and this dress I feel stupid in and I hate the loss of taste, the lips that won't curl, the stance that won't be straight. * Everybody has somebody they want to run back to, with the sun in the horizon keeping witness, Deep down in them. I'm no stupid little girl. I'll show you, you'll see my lips, my tattoos by the end of this night, And the bite marks on my stomach. * I'm tired of this dance. Make my face pull back to what it once was. None of this is real: this perfect eye makeup isn't real, this gaze that won't meet yours isn't real, & I'm sure the laughter already sounds fake enough. We're not happy. Necessary is a word that can be folded and loosened. What is a word, without its speaker? We can be gods here, I have dreamed of it. I slept last night reluctant to unfold the duvet. I won't ask all the questions. Promise me you will not take over the darkness after I am done with it.
