CHELSEA LEE-BASTABLE
HANNAH KAIRUZ
AMY MICALLEF
EMMA JENKINS
Chàe Magazine consists of a team of four students, who are passionate about the need to help people. The name ‘Chàe’ comes from the idea of unity and togetherness, as the name formed from the beginning letter of each members name. As individuals, the Chàe Team had different ideas of how they planned to help other students through digital media and communications. It wasn’t until the idea of a magazine came to mind, all members found a way to be creative and passionate
in the ways in which they planned to help other
people. All undertaking a Bachelor of Communication and Media at the University of Wollongong, they found that there wasn’t one place where students could find all the everyday help they needed to get through their University journey. This is where the idea of Chàe Magazine became a reality. We at Chàe Magazine hope you enjoy our first issue!

SPOOKY MOVIE TIME Written By Emma Jenkins
I love scary movies, horror movies I have to watch with other people I can't be by myself, thriller movies I can sometimes watch by myself but usually, I need someone with me. Half the time I need to ask questions with what going on because I can't watch the movie due to being scared. This will include a list of must-see spooky movies! 1.
THE CONJURING & THE
CONJURING 2 - DIRECTOR: JAMES WAN
By far these were the ones that have scared me the most and I love them! I could never watch them myself but I would definitely watch again, they are both terrifying but great movies
2. GET OUT - DIRECTOR: JORDAN PEELE
This movie from start to finish was great, the storyline had been thought out very well and it just flowed. Honestly, if you want a scary movie that makes you think a lot, this is the movie for you! It was such a well-written film and it was one of the best movies that had come out in 2017. It was bloody scary for me but still loved it!
10
| CHÀE MAGAZINE
3.
THE CABIN IN THE WOODS
- DIRECTOR: DREW GODDARD
I watched this a few years ago and it did make me laugh in a few scenes but others it made me very scared. It was a good film but Chris Hemsworth made it that much better, and the ending was wild from what I remember. This was so out there with the scenes which made it great.
4.
INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY -
DIRECTOR: ADAM ROBITEL
This movie made me want to poop my pants because it is so scary, basically all of the Insidious movies were very scary. This was the most recent one that came out but definitely watch all of them. They all obviously connect together but individually they are still great.
5.
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY -
DIRECTOR: OREN PELI
This first one out of all of the Paranormal Activity movies, this one was the scariest for me. Again the original was great but later on, it got less scary. These movies are great to watch if you are doing a movie marathon, or just wanting to watch in a group setting.

MANAGING PERSONAL CASH FLOW BY SIMON MICALLEF
Feeling in control of your money leads to less financial stress: There are three types of people: 1. Those that make things happen. 2. Those that watch things happen. 3. And those that look back and wonder what just happened. Depending on where you sit on the scale will determine how you approach many things including your finances. Make things happen: Those that make things happen have control of their personal cash flow. The flow of cash in essence refers to money that comes in and money that goes out. If you control what comes in and what flows back out you’re in control of your cash flow. If you simply earn money and pay bills and expenses as they arise you are not in control you’re in financial survival mode leading to financial stress. Plan to win: :A small change to planning your cash flow can have significant benefits in having financial control. Having financial control allows expenses to be met, financial goals to be achieved, and feeling less stressed about money. Taking financial control can start by identifying the income you earn, the expenses you are committed to and the goals you want to achieve.
The flow of money: The flow of money can be grouped into 6 buckets including: 1. Income 2. Fixed expenses (such as bills, phone, loan repayments) 3. Discretionary expenses (such as groceries, clothes) 4. Savings for future investment 5. Savings for personal goals (such has a holiday or new car) 6. Daily expenses to have fun and go out with friends. Identifying the flow of money into these 6 buckets will enable the process to begin. Find a Bank where you can open multiple accounts: Now that you have worked out where your money is flowing it’s time to open 6 accounts. You can open up as many as you like. Set up your accounts reflecting what is important to you. Each account reflects where you want to distribute your income. Taking the 6 bucket approach strategy your accounts may look like this: 1. Income Account 2. Bills Account 3. Other Expenses Account 4. My Personal Savings Account 5. My Goal - Holiday Account or My Goal - Car Account 6. Have Fun Account
18
| CHÀE MAGAZINE
Set up automatic payments: Set up automatic payments from your income account on a weekly basis so that money is distributed to your other accounts. To work out how much you should distribute to each account you need to first determine how much you require to meet the expense or goal you are saving for to ensure you achieve it. Whatever the expense or goal break this down to a weekly number. (If you are unsure how to set up automatic payments talk to your bank) Go weekly: By breaking up all expenses and savings into weekly blocks your distribution of income can be better managed. Distributing money each week will provide you the ability to plan for future expenses so when the bill arrives you already have the money. This results in planning your cash flow. For example: If your phone bill amounts to $100 a month, divide this by 4 weeks so that you distribute $25 a week into your Bills Account. This accumulates over the month ensuring you have the money to pay for it when due. Stress free payments: This approach means that when bills are due you already have the money to pay for them as you have been putting money away each week in readiness of the
bill
payment.
It
also
means,
through
good
discipline, not to overspend in other areas from your other accounts. Distribute each week: Using the same approach above distribute to all your accounts. Be sure to put money aside for your future savings. Small weekly savings over time can result in a large benefit in future years. Your financial journey: You can tailor this approach any way to suit your needs and goals. But it’s all in the planning. Stay in control of your cash flow. Make things happen your way through good planning 19

CHANGE YOUR PRODUCTS TO ECO-FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVES! CREATE A SHIFT IN THE MARKET TO ENCOURAGE COMPANIES TO CEASE PRODUCING PLASTIC PRODUCTS
ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS Get into eco-friendly products to replace your existing plastic products, some examples of these stores are Flora and Fauna and Seed and Sprout. These companies make eco-friendly products that you can use to replace other materials made of plastic! For example, bees wax as a replacement for glad wrap! Replace your current plastic materials with these ecofriendly alternatives.
We encourage you to give this a go and realise how truly important it is to be environmentally friendly! The more awareness these ecofriendly alternatives get will cause companies to appeal to the morals of its market and create products that are also eco-friendly. Examples of these actions can be seen in Coles and Woolworths and other market places where plastic bags are ceased and reusable bags are promoted, in addition to a profit for themselves by selling reusable bags for people who don’t have any (or forget to bring them, always leave some in your car!). 4 STEPS TO YOUR SPRING CLEAN
KEEP IT SIMPLE
22
| CHÀE MAGAZINE
STEPS TO A CLEAN AND ORGANISED ROOM START Chuck out all rubbish (inside bin, on surfaces, on ground... all trash) Pick up the clothes on the ground: even if dirty clothes are put in a basket and clean clothes are on the bed, just get them off the ground and separate them STEP ONE Clean the floor! Collect all your items on the floor and place them on your bed, sort through the dirty and clean clothing All of the clothes YOU own must have a designated area for you to come back to STEP TWO Put the second layer surfaces away second layer surfaces are the layer above the ground. Bookshelves, desks, drawers...
STEP THREE The Emptying Phase If you realise you don't know where something goes - throw it away. If you don't have a place for it, it's probably not significant enough. Consider the clothes you don't want or won't wear, chuck these in a pile to be donated! STEP FOUR Organise Use up that storage space and DO NOT fill it with junk! Now... put away these clothes nicely!! Take out your wardrobe and create a fitting system. Even label your places with blue tack and paper so you know where they go and FOLD THEM NICELY (see Marie Kondo for more tips) vacuum and dust your room... you are now done!

Do's and Don'ts Skincare Products
24
| CHÀE MAGAZINE
For myself, skincare is something I love and have put into practice this year, especially within my daily routine. My skin is known to be the sensitive type as well as having combination skin. Understanding what type of skin you have will help navigate your way around the skincare world a lot easier and it'll help understand what your skin can and can't take. In this blog, I will be showing products I like, ones I have heard of or things that didn't work for me in particular.
1. Clean & Clear: Morning Burst Facial Cleanser I use this every morning when I wake up, it helps my T-zone as it is very oily. This cleanser includes bursting beads, with Vitamin C and Ginseng which helps unclog the pores in my skin. I have had such good results with this and it doesn't make my skin feel dry at all! I would recommend for all skin types as my face doesn't hurt after using this and it's very soft on the face.
25
|Â CHĂ€E MAGAZINE
2. Bioré: Charcoal Acne Scrub This product didn't work well for my skin which created more issues for me to deal with. This was too rough on my skin, as it is meant to exfoliate away the dirt; instead, it just hurt my skin. I trialled this over two weeks but decided it wasn't meant to be a match.
I
wouldn't
recommend
this
for
sensitive skin types but it would seem to work for oily skin types.
3. Aurae Skin: Cleanser, Toning Mist & Hyaluronic Serum I discovered this brand from the markets I went to in my local area, and these products are actually so good! I use the Honey Rose Cleanser which is a crème based formula and it is so soft on the skin, Botanical Balance Toning Mist that makes my skin feel so hydrated and lastly the Beauty Boost Hyaluronic Serum which smells amazing. These three together have really helped my skin and I use these products of a night time every day. For me, I will always keep these with me as I have seen the most improvement in my skin by far with these products. For the ingredients across all of the include rose, aloe vera, honey, collagen, vitamin E, green tea and plum extract. 26
| CHÀE MAGAZINE
4. Mario Badescu: Facial Spray Trio Set This trio has been with me in my skin routine for around a year now, as you can see the Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater spray has been used the most. This was the first one I purchased out of the three and it really helped at the end of my routine. The other two were just recently purchased two months
ago,
which
is
Aloe,
Chamomile and
Lavender as well as Aloe, Cucumber and Green Tea. I use all three sprays now, rotating them or choosing what I am feeling that day or what my face needs. This helps with sensitive, dry and redness with skin types.
As there are so many more things I need to cover within this topic there will be a part two on products I would recommend from just what I have heard or what has the best reviews within the skincare world. Please let me know your thoughts on this and your experiences as I would love to hear them.

IS CUSTOM SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER WORTH IT?
like to thank, 'Function of Beauty', for sponsoring this weeks video"
by Hannah Kairuz
Function of Beauty is a New York based company that creates custom shampoos, conditioners, leave-in treatments and hair masks. The companies biggest selling point to customer is that each formula is specially made for each customer. So much so, that each bottle can be labeled according to you - function of *your name here*. The company also uses all natural products, is paraben and sulphate free - meaning no chemicals. The products are also cruelty free and vegan. Now as a buddying life-style influencer, or wannabe beauty influencer, I've been bombarded with so many Instagram, Facebook and sponsored YouTube videos so naturally I had to try it for myself.
“Your hair type. Your hair goals. Your color. Your fragrance. You name it (literally). - Function of Beauty (Website)
As a "budding" influencer, the cost of the product is way over my shampoo budget so I had to wait for the appropriate time to try the product. 29
| CHÀE MAGAZINE
A 16oz bottle of shampoo (which is around 470ml) costs $59AUD but if you buy the 16oz shampoo and conditioner set it'll set you back $79AUD, plus $5AUD if you don't sign up for a shipping frequency plan. The way it works: You start by taking a short hair quiz in which you describe your hair and choose 5 'hair goals'. As someone who's biggest hair goal was to grow my hair out fast I chose that option first. My formula - deep condition, hydrate, lengthen, oil control and strengthen - was ready to go. The last thing to website asks you to do is name your product, then choose a colour and fragrance. As the company is US based, the products took about two weeks to arrive on my door step. The first thing I noticed is bottle looks smaller than the ones I had seen on YouTube brand promoted videos. But I have to admit the aesthetic of the product overshadowed my initial thought. The product came in a beautiful little box with my "function of nana" label on the front. Now lets get to the real functionality of "function of beauty". After the first couple washes I noticed a difference in my hair length, its started to look longer, but I also wanted to convince myself that my hair was growing. But after doing a little measuring I found that my hair has actually grown about 2cm after using the product for two weeks. The fragrance I chose, milk(shea)ke, is really beautiful and potent when I'm washing my hair but after my hair dries I cant really smell the scent anymore which could be a good thing or a bad thing. Overall my hair does seem like its healthier then when I was just using a grocer bought shampoo. 30
|Â CHĂ€E MAGAZINE
My only negative thoughts on the product are the issue with the scent. I found with my grocery bought coconut scented shampoo the smell would last in my hair for a couple of days and with Function of Beauty the scent only lasts a day or less.
my hair goals: deep condition, hydrate, lengthen, oil control and strengthen
And the other negative I have about the product is the price. Eighty dollars for a smaller sized shampoo and conditioner set it quite a fair amount. Though, I do use my shampoo and conditioner less because my hair stays cleaner for longer - I still believe its a whole lot of money for something that doesn't really look like its making the biggest of differences in my hair. The aesthetic purposed of the product did really pull me to click "add to cart", but for a student on a budget - I'm not sure if this product really is a good investment.
If you're really passionate about your hair health and want to start using natural products - definitely have a look into Function of Beauty. But if you're more concerned about what works on your hair and is affordable - maybe give this product a miss.

Alright starting with some of the obvious add-ins people love to do is, adding more CHOCOLATE, this will make it gooier as well as the stronger flavour coming through and a richer one. Adding the different types of chocolate which would be dark and milk, for example, work well because it wouldn't be too rich then. Especially cutting them from a block into chunk will help reach that melting point within the brownie creating more flavour.
I love M&Ms so if I can add them in any way possible I will! Adding the crunchy, caramel, normal, peanut or mini will work great paired with the brownies. The caramel only had one issue that when the brownie wasn't warm the caramel became very hard, the solution was just to heat it up again. The colours stay there and look great when cutting into the brownie too!

If you love coffee ass much as I do then please try this out it will taste amazing! Adding in two teaspoons or if you like it string then add one or more when mixing in all the ingredients together. It doesn't overpower the chocolate at all. If you still want a more intense taste then I have heard substituting the water in the recipe with coffee with creating a mocha flavour.
Almonds are another great addition to brownies as some view this as a healthier option among them. Adding as many as you want, just adding them either in the middle or on top of the brownies! They give great flavour as well as a crunchy texture too. As the brownies were boxed brownies, it gives them a good boost which is what they need.
One that I have read about and yet to try is Greek Yoghurt, this is among the healthier options which gives the same moisture within the brownies. It has fewer calories than butter or oil does so you would swap these two, of course, you have to try first to see if it would be a good match for yourself. This is a protein boost within the brownies. 35

THE MOST COMMON CONDITION YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF BY MACY TORRINGTON
Our bodies are amazing! The things that they can do without us even thinking about it is what keeps us alive, functional, and able to do things like run a marathon, cook a full roast dinner for the family, or even get out of bed in the morning. Now, can you imagine what your life would be like if your body stopped “doing its thing”? If all the little things that you take for granted or might not even know about yourself suddenly disappear from your body’s capabilities? For me, this has been my reality ever since I was 17 years old - when I developed a condition known as dysautonomia. It’s possible you might be thinking - “what the hell is that, and why does it matter if I know about it??” . Well, since October is Dysautonomia Awareness Month, we thought it might be a good idea to give this condition a bit more of a spotlight in the media and let people know what living with it can look like for a person.
Before you know how it affects me, you’ll need a little background on what the condition actually is in the first place. For that we can look at the name: Dysmeaning abnormal or imperfect, and autonomia- referring to the body’s autonomic nervous system, in layman’s terms - a malfunctioning autonomic nervous system. This means that all the things controlled by your autonomic nervous system, like breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature control, digestion, etc. (all the things your body does without you thinking about it) do not work in the way that they are supposed to - if at all. There are several different types of dysautonomia depending on which body system is affected the most, but I am affected primarily by Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Neurocardiogenic Syncope (NCS) and Orthostatic Hypotension (OH) - all of which act the most on the heart and cardiovascular system 39

Now I know these are a lot of long, fancy words which probably don’t mean much to you - but I find it helpful to explain what all of this means, being that my body is pretty much allergic to gravity, or like I am in a constant game of ‘the floor is lava’. I can’t stand up for much more than a few minutes without fainting, and I’m pretty much tired all of the time from all the extra stuff my body has to go through to keep me alive while the proper mechanisms for functioning are unavailable. I know this is probably sounding pretty grim for me, but living with dysautonomia is not actually that scary if you get the right diagnosis and treatment. For me - I have to use a wheelchair instead of walking and standing, and I take a whole cocktail of medications every day. I also have to eat all of my meals in
liquid form as my stomach doesn't like to digest things properly, and drink about 34L of water every day to keep my blood volume up. All of these adjustments mean I am able to live pretty much normally, going out and being a person in the big wide world, however, until I was officially diagnosed my life was very different. Dysautonomia hit me like a truck when I was in year 11 of high school. One day I was ‘normal’ and the next it was like my whole body was shutting down - I could barely get out of bed in the morning, let alone go to school or do my normal extracurriculars! Everything was absolutely exhausting, and no one could give me any answers as to why! Doctors were completely perplexed as to how a teenager could go from completely
healthy to utterly demolished within a matter of days. It took a team of doctors from all different specialties, a month long stay in hospital, one heart surgery, and a diabolical procedure called a Tilt-Table-Test to finally diagnose me with dysautonomia, after around 8 months of misdiagnoses and hypotheses. Fortunately for me my experience is on the quicker end of diagnosis, as the average time a dysautonomia patient has to wait from first presentation to an official answer is 7 years! This long wait for answers is a massive issue in the medical community as it means many people cannot access the correct treatment for them to live a normal life; and is mainly due to a lack of awareness about the condition as a whole. 40

Dear Time. Written by: Zaina Azhar Sayeda
Dear time, Aren't you a sadist, Crawling painstakingly slow. When all I wish for, Is a fast-forward remote. Bolting across quicker, Than the speed of light. When I want to stop Your ticking hands with mine. Aren't you finitely infinite, Can be measured And yet, ironically Can't be defined.
Isn't it ironic, Isn't it a paradox, You are money, Yet you can't be bought..
Someone's 'always', Another's 'forever' Like synonyms by rule, Like antonyms in nature. Aren't you almost human-like, You change, Like one changes clothes. You heal, Like a doctor, with his medical dose. You run, Like a sprinter all drenched in sweat. You fly, Like a pilot flies his jumbo jet. Aren't you priceless, Aren't you divine, Sought after, yet undervalued When you should be enshrined. Isn't it ironic, Isn't it a paradox, You are money, Yet you can't be bought.

What do you hope to get out of this degree long term? Maybe a job? Or is that too farfetched in today’s climate? Seems like a pipedream at this point! For long term, I hope to retain all of the design concepts that I have learned, and have a better idea on how to make good designs and what makes something look... 'good' design wise. It is very tricky to have a design really hit that sweet spot, and I find it a worthwhile goal learning design, even if I may end up not using it. I enjoy it on a personal level, and mix it in with my drawings, so I suppose I
I think the turning point for me was so easily adding alterations to the drawings as well as colour. The versatility of the digital art medium allows for so much quicker exploration than traditional. You can adjust proportions and colour scheme at a moment’s notice, Things that you can't do on traditional, and that makes it a lot more fun. Traditional is definitely still very important too! I am still in awe at how people manage to do watercolour paintings and draw in oil pastel with such ease. They can be a lot more unforgiving than digital though, hence why the younger community can skew towards digital, it’s awesome to play around with.
just hope for more creativity and skill in the long run. How did you get into digital creating as opposed to traditional art forms? (e.i painting and drawing?) I tried to get into digital painting when I was 16 years old, but I found it too hard and nearly gave up. But a year later I tried it again, stuck with it and loved it!
What is your favourite stress coping mechanism as a student who enjoys creating? For me personally, it’s just plopping down in front of a couch playing games, listening to a podcast or watching YouTube. That is ultimate relaxation and laziness. I do draw to relax sometimes, but I do it so often that its more of an activity that I do when my mind is switched on, so getting inspiration from social media and games is a great way to recharge my batteries. 48
