SITE: PULAU BANDING, GERIK,PERAK

The concept of the Nature Appreciaon Centre is derived from the orang asli of Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak. The orang asli love nature where everything they used is based on the nature such as their food source, construcon and handicra materials. Besides, the orang asli are unrestrained towards the nature. Thus, the concept of the design is “Border-less” where there is less boundary, unrestrained by enclosures and spaces are physically as well as visually connected.

The selected site is located at Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak which is well known for its nature acvies such as fishing, bird watching, camping and vising orang asli selements. The concepts “BORDERLESS” was derived from the unrestrained towards nature of orang asli in Pulau Banding. They are all based on the nature and they are part of it. The main intenon of the design is to bring users closer to the nature by experiencing and appreciang the nature as in they are part of it without being restricted.

BURNING COAL

POETRY IS FROSTED FIRE

by Azpazija (1865 - 1943)

“To the Latvian the dainas are more than a literary tradion. They are the very embodiment of his cultural heritage, le by forefathers whom history had denied other, more tangible forms of expression. These songs thus form the very core of the Latvian identy." - Former president of Latvia and scholar Mrs. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga

DAINAS Dainas are the poetries and folklores that shape and epitomize the essence of Latvian identy. They are the main mode of transmission of Latvian culture and one of the milestones in identy building. It is necessary to understand the connecon that Latvians maintain with nature, their history and their identy in order to revel in the true substance of these quatrains. Part of our formal inspiraons stems from a Latvian poem tled “The Burning Coal” by Aspazija which very much reflects on the tradion, literature and symbolism of this naon in upholding its culture. By using the processes of burning coal, the poet metaphorically painted the journey of how one's passion are spread across. Within these five stanzas, he created a series of poecs that constutes the spaces in the spa house.

SPA aRT COMPETITION SITE: LATVIA

ECOTHERAPY Our design strive to elevate the idea of a tradional bath house and create a therapeuc facility that tends to both physical as well as the mind of the users. Ecotherapy is based on the idea that people are connected to and impacted by the natural environment. In nature, our minds process a lot less informaon than normal, and they don't wear themselves out by concentrang. To achieve that in this nature surrounded site, we began to queson the orthodox approach for an enclosed space. Vercal walls became the main design style, with walls arranged in a manner to eliminate enclosed corners. The effect is a humble building that allow the prisne nature of Latvia to seep into the spaces. The layout of the internal space is a carefully planned path of circulaon which leads users to certain predetermined points but lets them explore other areas for themselves. The perspecve is always controlled to ensures or denies a view. THERMAL EXPERIENCE Thermal experience is based on a relaxing cycle alternang hot and cold. The vercal walls poised over the water feature that wraps around the building subtly creang a visual and physical guidance. The design takes full advantage of Latvia’s poec seng and natural light allowing interplay with the environment – be it the changing hues and reflecons of the water, or varying tones of light and shadow, the building manifests a multude of changing emoons. The building elegantly conveys a quiet beauty when the concrete and substanals comes in contact with the fluid and ethereal.

Design with Axis Our design and planning is driven by two main axis. These axis lines that is created by the exisng elements on site become part of the building. North-South (NS) Axis Created by the strong axis between the pond, topography as well as trees, this axis serves as the guide where visitors are led into public spaces. North-East (NE) - South West (SW) Axis Dominated by surrounding views, this axis guides visitors towards provate spaces

Restricted and restrained, We overcome.

Our whole soul Full of intentions Full of fresh Springful new notions!

Ripened and recognized, We influence.

This proposal offers users a flexible and affordable housing development strategy. As the land, property and construcon costs connue to rise, many users especially reree and youngsters could not afford to get a house. As a result, mul-generaon families could not live together as the bigger the land, the higher the cost. The flexible and affordable housing development strategy allows users to choose, design and create their house according to their own unique lifestyle. The concept of the modules is a plug and play system where users get to plug-in a few module types in order to form their desired house based on their ability as well as the demographic of their family. The modules can be formed from a single bachelor module up to 6 modules that can house a family of 6 members. The maximum formaon within a 500 sq plot size can go up to 8 modules. In addion, this system is adaptable to various site condion as the flexibility of modules allows flexible arrangement.
