President’s Welcome DR. HENRY D. SHANNON The strong history of academic and athletic success of our baseball program is continuing in the young men that will take the field today. Many will graduate this year, following the example of the Panther alumni that have played before them by continuing their education and baseball careers at colleges and universities across the country. Like their predecessors, these student-athletes will take with them the high standards the Chaffey coaching staff has instilled in them, making their families and our college proud. Please join me in cheering the Panthers on to another successful season both on and off the field.

Interim Athletic Director’s Welcome CARL BEACH Welcome to the 2012 season of Panther baseball. This season marks Jeff Harlow’s ninth season as head coach of the Chaffey College Panthers. Each year, Coach Harlow fields a team of fine young men that continually dominate the Foothill Conference – bringing home the conference title four times during his tenure and participating in the state championships eight times.

The 2011 baseball team produced seven All Conference players and seven four year college transfers. We wish these Panther alumni success both in the classroom and on the playing field. This spring, Chaffey College will field eight intercollegiate teams including basketball, baseball, swimming, softball and track & field. Thank you for your continued support of Panther athletics. We look forward to welcoming you to a game or meet this season.

Fans, the Commission On Athletics Decorum Policy is in effect at this event, which is sanctioned by the State Office. Please be respectful and courteous to each other. The COA strongly encourages all fans to avoid using profane language, taunting opponents and fans, or making inappropriate gestures or non-verbal signs to opposing teams, players and fans. Those violating the COA Decorum Policy will be warned once. Subsequent violations of the COA Decorum Policy will result in ejection from the host venue. Thank you.

Jeff Harlow - Head Baseball Coach COACH’S BACKGROUND

COACH’S PHILOSOPHY

Head Baseball Coach Jeff Harlow is entering his 15th season at Chaffey College. He is a Chaffey alumnus who played for the late Howard W. Lowder in 1987 and 1988. Harlow, a middle infielder, was team captain in 1988 when the team advanced to the quarter finals of the state playoffs where Chaffey had its best playoff appearance in school history. Harlow’s overall record at Chaffey is 235-83.

There are many factors to take into consideration when building a successful baseball program at the community college level. When a student-athlete is recruited to Chaffey College, my primary goal as a coach is to assist that person with the admission, assessment, and academic guidance process first. My secondary interest is to provide the student-athlete with the resources necessary to compete at the intercollegiate level. These would include: strength and conditioning programs, fundamental training, supplementary exercise programs, nutritional and diet information, as well as academic advice to assist the student-athlete with transferability rules and eligibility regulations.

The Panthers completed the 2011 season with 7 All-Conference players and 7 sophomores earning athletic scholarships to four-year universities plus one player drafted.

2011 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS • LED THE CONFERENCE IN HITTING, PITCHING, AND FIELDING • 28-11 OVERALL RECORD • 20-5 CONFERENCE RECORD • 8TH CONSECUTIVE TRIP TO STATE PLAYOFFS

When a student-athlete is able to excel in the above requirements, this will allow for two things to happen: earn an athletic scholarship (86 since 1996) or sign a professional contract (23 since 1996). “I truly believe that players that complete two years in our baseball program will be treated fairly by the coaching staff and given every opportunity to obtain placement at the next level.”

Harlow finished his playing career at the University of La Verne, earning 1st team S.C.I.A.C. honors, as well as an All-Western Region selection in 1991. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education at the University of La Verne and a Master’s degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific University in 1998. Coach Harlow’s professional experience has included scouting for the Cincinnati Reds, the Montreal Expos, and the Florida Marlins. When he’s not coaching baseball, Jeff likes to play golf and spend time with his family. His wife, Laura, is a P.E. instructor at Chaffey as well. They have four daughters, Madison (16), Megan (14), Kamryn (10), and Karsyn (5).

Coaching Staff Chris Walters Assistant Coach Chris Walters returns for his fifth season with Chaffey. Walters previously coached at Cal Baptist University for two years, following his playing career. While at CBU, he earned his Bachelor’s (Business Administration) and Master’s (Kinesiology) degrees. Walters lives in Riverside with his wife, Jenny, and their daughter Hayley.

Kent Gurney Coach Gurney has been coaching baseball for over 20 years including 19 years at Alta Loma. He is a graduate of Chaffey College and Oral Roberts University. Coach Gurney and his wife Cindy are the proud parents of 2 children including former Chaffey Panthers starting pitcher Colby Gurney.

Jody Stevens Coach Stevens has been coaching since 1999 at Fontana High School and the Angels Elite Scout Team. A previous student-athlete at Fontana High from 1991-93 he went on to play at Cerro Coso Community College and San Diego State University. He coached at Chaffey College from 2004-2006 and was an assistant coach at San Diego State under Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn from 2007-2009 handling bullpen coach, 3B coach and camp coordinator.

Phil Roberts Strength & Conditioning Coach Coach Roberts begins his 8th season with the Chaffey College Baseball staff. Roberts teaches and trains Panther athletes with rigorous strength and conditioning. Roberts joined the Panthers after spending two years coaching at the high school level in Missouri. Roberts received a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Kansas State University in 2001 and a Master’s degree in Physical Education and Health from Northwest Missouri State University in 2003.
