Abstract In the history of Medicine, the appearance of experimental models is relatively recent. Parallel to the evolution registered sparked by the concept of the “controlled experiment” up to the appearance of experimental models as we know today has been the growth of surgery and areas intimately associated to it in the more general area of Medicine. The author gives an historical insight into the concept of the evolution of the experimental model, which today is fundamental for those who use animals for the progress of science. Evolutionary landmarks have led to the emergence of this paradigm of the experimental model in medicine, where the function of an organ is regulated by an organism that is responsive to various stimuli of the environment. Besides the standardization of animal experimentation in physiological research, Reduction, Refinement and Replacement, should be unequivocally implemented.
