Jesse: Release all the tapes, rescind FOP contract Calls for White House summit on violence By Chinta Strausberg Saying Chicago is the epic center of the urban crisis in America today because of its crime, the police and the judicial system, the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., Monday called for a White House summit on crime and urban development, and the closure of the infamous Homan Square police detention center where mostly black men were allegedly tortured by police. Jackson made his remarks during a press conference held at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, 930 E. 50th St. where he responded to the Chicago Police Accountability report that revealed unfairness towards people of color. He is demanding that all of the policeinvolved videos be released and said the disciplinary code of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) should be rescinded because “it’s a source of cover-up. Police who file false reports should be a felony for they are as guilty as those engaged in direct acts of violence and break the code of law.”

‘A Pause to Remember History’ ‘Panel explores historic role of Chicago Mayor Harold Washington’ By Mark Sorkin—April 26, 2013 A distinguished panel of experts gathered at the University of Chicago recently to reflect on the 30th anniversary of the election of Harold Washington, the city’s first African American mayor. “When we describe that time, we talk about the culmination of three things: the man, the movement and the moment,” said Chicago Sun-Times columnist Laura Washington, who moderated the discussion. The lively event offered a range of perspectives on how Washington changed Chicago history, along with insightful takes on his legacy and rare video footage from Chicago filmmaker Bill Stamets’ 1987 Super-8 film, Chicago Politics: A Theater of Power. Organized by the Chicago Studies Program, which the University Community SerMayor Harold Washington vice Center runs in partnership with the College, and by the Institute of Politics, the April 9 discussion gave students an opportunity to connect with the city in a meaningful way. UCSC Director Amy Chan said she hoped the event would “spark an open and honest dialogue about race in Chicago politics.” In addition, she said, “We wanted students to gain some historical perspective as they consider careers in public service.” Panelists included Institute of Politics Director David Axelrod, AB’76, who covered Harold Washington’s first mayoral campaign as a young reporter for the Chicago Tribune; Chicago Alderman Will Burns, AB’95, AM’98; Michael Dawson, the John D. MacArthur Professor of Political Science, who directs the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture; and Jacky Grimshaw, Washington’s political strategist, who now serves as vice president of policy at the Center for Neighborhood Technology. In addition to the UCSC and the Institute of Politics, the event was co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and the International House Global Continued on page 15 6

‘Minister Clayton Rhodes and My Brother’s Keeper’ And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? Genesis 4:9

Greenville, South Carolina: After a period of being labored with the spirit of guilt concerning his father... the holy spiritual laid on the heart of minister Clayton Rhodes that the embedded hurt could and would be removed from his heart, but only after he would have to dealt with his un-forgiving heart. On a particular day … at about the hour of midnight … he holy spiritual awaken Rhodes and charged his heart to go to the hospital where his father was hospitalized. When he arrived his father was waiting for him to make that visitation that both would long be remember. Before any words were uttered by Clayton, the father said “Don’t say a word. The father continued by saying, I want you to know something. “I have one question to ask you… Would you forgive me? Thus full of compassion, Clayton fell to his knees and cried…and ‘Father would you forgive me?’ … Minister Clayton Rhodes

After Satan was defeated in his mission to destroy, these two gentle-spirits with the intervention of God … were restored in their relationship that same night.

In about 2-years later … Clayton said, “The Lord placed it on my heart to bring various men together to deal with their heartaches and pain. These men came from far and near and this was the beginning of God-fearing men coming together to express their inward feeling and crying out to the Lord. And from the gatherings... men have been heal and set-free.

A man was on a long walk in the country. He became thirsty so decided to stop at a little cottage and ask for something to drink. The lady of the house invited him in and served him a bowl of soup by the fire. There was a baby pig running around the kitchen, running up to the visitor and giving him a great deal of attention. The visitor commented that he had never seen a pig this friendly. The housewife replied, "Ah, he's not that friendly. That's his bowl you're using." 14

‘2016: Professional Political Gladiators’ For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. Micah 6:12.

Commentary by: Rev. Harold E. Bailey

A

s in the Roman Empire’s medieval age, affluent rulers and spectators would watch enslaved-warriors as they fought unwillingly among themselves in coliseums to accommodate the biddings of their masters. Actions among today’s political gladiators are compelling even to point of drawing of blood. Fighting warriors who were without any clout that was worth-while, had to obey the dictates of those who sent them into battle or possible death. Thusly, professional warriors were deemed as invaluable … Slaves. Devious warfare of our many historical yesterdays has now re-surfaced on today’s political front where one candidate-dictator has the audacity to represent himself as a god. Assuming to be a superior leader, this one pretentious so-called-leader dare to take-on the role of Caesar, and has pronounced himself sublimely as ruler over the lives of thousands while seeking to under-mind the thoughts of those under-educated blacks, Hispanics and whites. Any effort to earmark blacks for a sure vote should be reconsidered! Blacks are more politically astute today and should not be taken for granted! A large number of African Americans are fully aware as to the concerted efforts to use and misuse the black voters. Some candidates believe that blacks are considered as slaves for the slaughter! The change of the political climate recently took place in Chicago as disgruntled voters marched to the polls to demonstrate their displeasure with the City and State Governments. It is suggested by a source that the State of Illinois and Chicago City Hall along with its Aldermen and Women are to expect a change in administration. The voter turnouts were not expected nor were the results. There was a message forward to the recently re-elected Mayor Rahm Emanuel who made unfulfilled promises; the voter message is that his time is marked. Young black men and women are not apparently going to submit to the slave mentality of yesterday… they are looking and expecting constructive change.

Fighting for the Masters’

On both local and the national scene politics should be watched with a jaundice eye. And, when political lying perpetrators make declarations that whatever they said becomes law… the tax payer best become acutely careful! Scriptures makes it clear that when a man believes he’s more than he or she actuality is – then comes the fall! In debating forums some politicians know in their hearts when they are fabricating lies, and know that they are disseminating hate and distrust among the American taxpaying public. However, the follower who believes in the perpetrators’ lie … embellishes upon what he or she considers as truth! Many are not aware as to the deliberated intent of the deceiver. The deceiver who is Satan will fool the very elect if possible! Remembering: Above all things the heart is desperate and evil… who can know it but God! Be assured that there is a reckoning day for: backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, and inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents. Romans 1:30. The Deceiver There is a day of gloom and doom for the evils inflicted on God’s people who were created to have life more abundantly. God is not a man that he should lie; neither the son of man that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Numbers 23/19. Politicians with evil mentalities will convincible lie, steal and even kill to achieve their goal for the United States White House, but God continually speaks throughout eternality to those believers who would be his devoted servants.

But as for liars and the rich: For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. Micah 6:12. Voices Lecture Series. Washington, a longtime state legislator and civil rights advocate who had been elected in 1981 to represent the South Side in the U.S. House of Representatives, was initially reluctant to enter the Chicago mayoral race, Axelrod recalled. But in the summer of 1982, as the African American community grew disenchanted with incumbent Mayor Jane Byrne and increasingly vocal in their enthusiasm for Washington, he pledged to run if his supporters could raise $1 million and register 50,000 new voters. To his surprise, those goals were easily surpassed, and so began the historic campaign that led to his election on April 12, 1983. In order to secure the Democratic nomination and win the general election in a political climate of racial anxiety, Washington forged a citywide coalition that united disparate communities around a common agenda of inclusion and reform. “One of the things that impressed me was how positive the movement was,” Axelrod said, recalling how the campaign’s hopeful “sunrise” buttons inspired the logo he helped design for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Several panelists noted the strong similarities between Washington and Obama in terms of governing style and campaign tactics. “One of the things you see for the first time in quite awhile is the ability to organize from the grassroots up,” Dawson said of the Obama campaign. Once in office, he added, both men faced fierce opposition to policy agendas aimed at helping vulnerable minority communities. “I wasn’t around during the Harold Washington era, so it was interesting to hear that multiracial coalition-building has roots in Chicago, and that it affected Obama,” said Linda Nyemba, a fourth-year cinema and media studies major. One of the night’s recurring themes was the challenge of preparing the next generation of African American political leaders—whether they run for office or stay out of the limelight, helping devise winning electoral campaigns and smart policy. For University of Chicago political science doctoral student Allen Linton II, AB’11, who helped organize the event, Washington is as much of a role model as the current president. “[Washington] had big ideas, and he pursued them, and he was able to not only win election, but to win re-election in a tumultuous climate,” Linton said. “So I think it encourages young people—who, right or wrong, are known for big ideas, and sometimes for being naïve—to go for it.” Chicago, Chicago Studies, Diversity, Harold Washington, Institute of Politics, Politics, Public service, University Community Service Center (UCSC)

Bob Marovich and Conversations with the Legends

A

City Called Heaven, gospel announcer and music historian Robert Marovich shines a light on the humble origins of a majestic genre and its indispensable bond to the city where it found its voice: Chicago. Marovich follows gospel music from early hymns and camp meetings through the Great Migration that Bob Marovich brought it to Chicago. In time, the music grew into the sanctified soundtrack of the city's mainline black Protestant churches. In addition to drawing on print media and ephemera, Marovich mines hours of interviews with nearly fifty artists, ministers, and historians--as well as discussions with relatives and friends of past gospel pioneers--to recover many forgotten singers, musicians, songwriters, and industry leaders. He also examines how a lack of economic opportunity bred an entrepreneurial spirit that fueled gospel music's rise to popularity and opened a gate to social mobility for a number of its practitioners. As Marovich shows, gospel music expressed a yearning for freedom from earthly pains, racial prejudice, and life's hardships. In the end, it proved to be a sound too mighty and too joyous for even church walls to hold.

Illinois considers allowing recall vote of Chicago mayor CHICAGO — The furor over recent Chicago police shootings has legislators considering whether voters should be allowed to recall Mayor Rahm Emanuel or future officials who hold his post. It’s an unusual proposition for a state where the recall option is almost nonexistent. Illinois state law only addresses the recall of a governor. The provision was put in place in 2010 after former Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested and impeached. Now a Democratic state legislator from Chicago, Rep. La Shawn Ford, wants voters to also have the power to remove the mayor of the country’s third-largest city. Rep. LaShawn Ford Mayor Rahm Emanuel Illinois is among 19 states that allow recalls of state and local officials. But unlike those states, Illinois only addresses gubernatorial recalls. Illinois municipalities can adopt their own recall ordinances but it’s a seldom-used power. By The Associated Press. Gov. Bruce Rauner

OAK BROOK, Ill. — Gov. Bruce Rauner says he would sign legislation allowing voters to recall the mayor of Chicago, but he says the law wouldn’t apply to Rahm Emanuel. Rauner said Monday he hasn’t studied the measure introduced by Democratic state Rep. LaShawn Ford. But he says based on what he’s been told “I would sign that bill.” The Republican also says he supports recall provisions for all elected officials, and “that would be the best bill to pass.” Rauner says his attorneys advised him that a recall law would apply only to lawmakers elected in the future, not sitting office holders. Ford proposed the bill after Chicago released squad-car video of a white officer shooting a black teen 16 times, sparking heavy criticism of Emanuel. Illinois law only addresses the recall of a governor. By Associated Press

Illinois’ official slogan is the “Land of Lincoln,” but an equally apt Illinois: Some Politicians Sent to Prison

descriptor would be the “Land of Greased Palms.”

The state, Cook County and its governmental seat, Chicago, have a long history of corruption by elected and appointed officials. The culture of corruption dates back to the late 19th century, when a gambling-house owner named Michael Cassius McDonald created the city's first political machine, establishing a model in which officials would distribute contracts, jobs and social services in exchange for political support, according to a scholarly history of organized crime in Chicago by Robert Lombardo, a sociology professor and former Chicago and Cook County police officer. Its persistence was documented in Sept. 7, 2006 by the Chicago Sun-Times, which reported that at least 79 current or former Illinois, Chicago or Cook County elected officials had been found guilty of a crime by judges, juries or their own pleas since 1972. The paper provided this tally of the tarnished: three governors, two other state officials, 15 state legislators, two congressmen, one mayor, three other city officials, 27 aldermen, 19 Cook County judges and seven other Cook County officials. The article noted that so many aldermen had been jailed that the newspaper ran a front-page-story 19

Scratch the Head: Who Cares What the Community Think! ‘The Community has More Questions than Answers’ Chicago IL: Is it not true that Gov. Bruce Rauner and Mayor Rahm Emanuel knew one another prior to being elected to city and state government? Isn’t it also true that both were on vacation together? Question: I wonder what their conversations were in private quarters. Do you think planning for both the state and city government was ever discussed? Do you think that the ‘blame game’ would come up and a decision would be make as to who would do what—and who would take blame for any occurrences while they were in office. As African Americans talk freely in closed quarters—why would these two men of authority not do the same? It also would be wonderful if blacks could get on one page and set their sites to dump those people who seek to destroy the various communities of our cities… black and white. Now, as the voters sent one representative home and back into the unemployment line… why can’t we do that with all the public servants the same who have devoted themselves to serve only themselves? Selection of Police Chief: Is Mayor Emanuel Obeying Illinois Law? Commentary by: Rev. Harold E. Bailey, Former Chairman of the Cook County Board of Corrections As the public read … wisdom will triumph!

As former chairman of the Cook County Board of Corrections, I encountered a similar experience as the Chicago Police Board (CPD). I note the two Departments, County Corrections and ‘CPD’ laws are similar and are set-forth without any documented exceptions which would allow for outside influence from the mayor. The Illinois State Statue clearly gives directives as to what the CPD Board should do to assist Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the selection of a Chicago Police Superintendent! As the result of the Chicago Police Board’s National search, the board was able to submit three (3) candidates to the mayor’s. The law says that the mayor is to select from the list one (1) person of his choosing. Was this done becomes the question… I believe in my heart-of-hearts that the boards intentions were honorable, however the hidden hand of disruption and destruction as lift his ugly head – only to once again come to rob, steal and kill. The mayor refused to select from the list means he has been ill-advised! With first-hand experience in a similar matter with the Cook County Board Mayor Emanuel Officer Eddie Johnson (CCBC) of Corrections, the enemy of justice sought to do with the CCBC that which Mayor Rahm is presently seeking to do with the CPD Board. I was chairman of the board, thusly I sought legal assistance and sued the then Sheriff Michael Sheehan… and won on several fronts. The Cook County Board of Corrections devoted time and energy to the National research, but Sheehan said he wanted to have things his way. I rebutted his insulting manner and countered with a law-suit. I hasten to point out that a public official cannot rewrite the written Illinois law. Why is Mayor Emanuel doing this is suspect to say the least! Alexander, who was one of three finalists the Chicago Police Board recommended for the post, told AP the plan was for him to fly to Chicago on Monday and that the announcement would come Wednesday, but then Emanuel called Saturday night to call it off. How can the mayor in good conscious take such measures in hand, unless he believes he can have it his way without any debate! It is reported that an aide to Emanuel on Sunday denied that Cedric Alexander was ever offered the job as Chicago's police superintendent. Keep in mind that Alexander is documented to be on the list Continued on page 19 20

of three (3) candidates chosen…by the CPD Board. Alexander, the public safety director in Georgia's DeKalb County, told The Associated Press that the mayor offered him the job Thursday during a meeting in Washington, D.C., and that the mayor said he intended to make Chicago Police Department Chief of Patrol Eddie Johnson his first deputy. "He (Mayor Emanuel) did offer me the position in D.C. on Thursday, and last night he called and said he's going in a different direction," Alexander said.

Cedric Alexander

I hasten to say, there is nothing wrong quality wise with Police Officer Eddie Johnson. The mayor should have not put this gentleman in such an awkward position. This issue is merely about obeying the Illinois Law which the mayor just ought to scribe to. Or, at least that what the mayor tells our Chicago Youth to do – obey the law! We have to lead by way of examples. Youth emulate that which they see!

‘The Chicago Police Board and Written Law’ The Chicago Police Board is an independent civilian body that oversees certain activities of the Chicago Police Department. The nine members of the Board are private citizens appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. The Police Board's primary powers and responsibilities include: Deciding disciplinary cases involving allegations of police misconduct. Holding monthly public meetings that provide an opportunity for all members of the public to present questions and comments to the Board, the Superintendent of Police, and the Chief Administrator of the Independent Police Review Authority. Nominating candidates for the position of Superintendent of Police to the Mayor.

Laws are created and set-forth by reason of law. All Chicago citizens are expected to obey the law! In the Illinois Court-of-Law … John and Jane Doe tax payers are often warned that there is No One Above the Law!

Calls for White House summit on violence

The report also showed there is a lack of trust between the community and Chicago police and that people feel the police “have no regard for the sanctity of life when it comes to people of color.” The study was unveiled by the Chicago Police Accountability Task Force headed by Lori Lightfoot after the shooting of 17year-old Laquan McDonald by officer Jason Van Dyke who has since been charged with murder. But that was one infamous video. Rev. Jackson called for all video tapes involving police-involved shootings must be released. “If a policeman falsify a report, it should be a felony,” he said giving the example of Van Dyke’s shooting of McDonald 16 times in 15 seconds.

Jesse Jackson Sr.

Rev. G. Livingston

While Van Dyke was ultimately indicted, the other officers present “covered it up” with false reporting of the incident. “They too must face the bar of justice. There is a pattern of police falsifying reports,” Jackson said.

Jackson was flanked by Cook County Comm. Richard Boykin (D-1st), Rev. Gregg Livingston, president, Coalition for a New Chicago, Rev. Tyrone McGowan, Rev. Paul Jakes, New Tabernacle Faith Baptist Church, Pastor Ira Acree, Greater St. John Bible Church and co-chair of the LEADERS Network, Dr. Jo Ann Roberts, education chair for the Rainbow PUSH Education Department, Khaliah Davis, consultant for PUSH Excel and Al Penn, from the Coalition from East Chicago. Rev. Acree also wants President Obama to come home and deal with the gun violence. “We are in a state of crisis and police misconduct has made us an international disgrace.” He called for the disbanding of the Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA) that seldom ruled against an accused policeman. Acree said, “You can’t have police policing the police” and expect fairness to prevail. Acree supports a job bill many say will reduce gun violence.

Rev. Ira Acree

Agreeing, Rev. Jackson said Boykin’s jobs bill is needed along with a White House summit on crime that includes jobs and skill trade training. “We cannot just police crime. We need jobs, trade skill training and plans for urban reconstruction. We bailed out the banks and locked out the homeowners,” said Jackson.

The West Side, South Siders are full of homeowners who bought their homes and the banks using subprime schemes took away their homes. There should be jobs reconstruction their homes. We need an urban policy. There is no present or apparent urban policy,” said Jackson calling for a White House conference on violence and urban reconstruction. Boykin joined Rev. Jackson’s call for the closure of the Homan Square police detention center where he said since 2004 more than 7,000 mostly black and Hispanic detainees were allegedly denied legal counsel “and tortured.” “Trust in the Chicago Police Department cannot be restored unless the issue of Homan Square is immediately, directly and decisively confronted,” Boykin stated. He called on the U.S. Justice Department, which is already investigating alleged police abuse in the Chicago Police Department, to include Homan Square in their investigations. “We all know the history from (former Cmdr.) Jon Burge up until now. We know the history of the Chicago police department, and we must deal with that history. We must rid it of corruption,” said Boykin. “We got new leadership at the police department, but unless we deal with Homan Square and the issues there, all of this is just window dressing,” said Boykin.

24

Jesse: Release all the tapes, rescind FOP contract “The systemic racism and history of corruption cited in the Police Accountability Task Force Report require that the Department of Justice investigate the allegations of torture and denial of counsel at Homan Square,” said Boykin. He said any officer knowingly submitting or files a false police report should be immediately fired.

“Chicago is the epicenter of the urban crisis in American today both in terms of crime by the people, the police and the judicial system. It’s not just the crime. It’s the scene where the crime is taking place,” Jackson stated.

Jackson and Boykin also called for the closure of the infamous Homan Square police detention facility where suspects were held without the benefit of legal counsel and allegedly tortured though they were not arrested.

The facility is in the site of the old Sears warehouse on the West Side of Chicago. It is a place where civil rights attorney Flint Taylor called a CIA-like “black site” where police gather information about crimes. According to Boykin, of the 7,000 detainees brought to Homan Square, 6,000 were African American men.

Jackson likened the facility to that of the poison water in Flint, Michigan. “The cameras have left but the lead has not left and so is the Homan Square. The cameras have not shown up, but the crime is there…. There’s no justification for its existence in the first place. Nationally, it should become like Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was jailed for 18-years) a museum of the worse of our days.”

Livingston commended the report but said when police break the law they should be decertified. He called on the General Assembly “to give the mayor of Chicago the power to deal with the FOP. Let the mayor fire these criminal cops…. We’ve spent over $600 million on these misconduct settlements….”

Donald Trump may not have been at the White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday night, but his presence was certainly felt — especially during a roasting by the POTUS himself. President Barack Obama said he was "a little hurt" that the Republican presidential frontrunner wasn't at "Nerd Prom," noting, "We had so much fun that last time." Trump, in fact, did not have fun last year, keeping a sour face in the midst of jokes made about him. The President wondered why Trump might not be there, asking, "Is this dinner too tacky for the Donald?" "Is he at home eating a Trump steak, tweeting out insults to Angela Merkel?" Obama asked. However, the other presidential candidates weren't safe either. Obama noted that Bernie Sanders is much more appealing to young voters, comparing Hillary Clinton's attempts to get the approval of youth is like "your relative signing up for Facebook." He did, though, throw her a bone: "Next year, someone else will be standing in this very spot, and it's anyone's guess who she will be." Clinton, of course, is the only female candidate in the race. POTUS didn't fail to include quite a few pop culture riffs in his routine. He made references to "Game of Thrones," "Spotlight" and of course, Kendall Jenner, who sat in the audience. 25

1 dead, 13 wounded after South, West Side shootings A man was shot to death and at least 13 other people, including a 14-year-old boy, were wounded after shootings Saturday afternoon and evening on the South Side. The fatal attack happened at 1:20 p.m. in the 100 block of West Garfield Boulevard in the Englewood neighborhood, when two assailants, 17 and 36, began shooting at each other, said Chicago Police Officer Kevin Quaid, a police spokesman. During the shootout, the older man was shot in the chest and the side, said Quaid, who added this man was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 17-year-old was shot in the left leg and was in good condition, also at Stroger. The teen is under arrest for the attack but no charges have been approved yet, Quaid said. The motive for the incident remains under investigation by Area Central detectives but both gunmen are documented gang members, Quaid said. In other shootings: Most recently, a 50-year-old man was left in critical condition after a shooting on the West Side in the Austin neighborhood, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman. That shooting happened about 6:10 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Superior Street. According to reports, the man was standing on Superior when a gray sedan pulled up and a passenger got out, walked up to the victim and shot him in the chest, Estrada said. Police believe the shooting happened during an attempted robbery. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition. About 4:10 a.m., a 24-year-old man walked into Community First Hospital with a gunshot wound to the right back. The victim reported he was a passenger inside of a car that was traveling north in the 3300 block of North Laramie. A black SUV began following the car, and soon after, someone fired shots, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman. The victim was later transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where his condition was stabilized, Estrada said. About 3:45 a.m., a 25-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman walked into Roseland Community Hospital after getting shot in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman. The man and the woman were in a vehicle in the 10700 block of South King Drive when someone in a passing white Pontiac Grand Prix fired shots, Zala said. The man was shot in the abdomen and in the leg, and the woman was hit in the left leg, police said. The woman, who was the driver, drove to Roseland, where she was in good condition, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman. The man was transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, Estrada said. About 3 a.m., a 22-year-old man and a 32-year-old man walked into the Englewood police station after they were wounded in a shooting in West Englewood, Zala said. The two men told police they were shot in the 6300 block of South Hamilton Continued on page 27 Continued from pate 26. Avenue before getting to the police station, about a mile away at 1438 W. 63rd St., Zala said.

The younger man suffered a graze wound to his forehead, and the older man was shot in the leg, Estrada said. Both men were being uncooperative with the police. They were taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where they were listed in good condition, Estrada said. The 22-year-old man is a documented gang member, police said. About 12:15 a.m., a 35-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, Zala said. The man was walking south in the 4800 block of South Bishop Street when he heard gunshots and realized he was struck, Zala said. The man was hit in the right ankle, and he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Zala said. About 9:15 p.m. Saturday, a 14-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting in the Burnside neighborhood on the Far South Side, Zala said. The boy was standing on the street in the 8900 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when a black SUV pulled up and someone inside fired shots, Zala said. He was shot in the left leg, and he was taken to Comer’s Children’s Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Zala said. About 8 p.m., a 40-year-old man was wounded in a shooting about 8 p.m. in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side, Quaid said. The man was outside in the 7000 block of South Vernon Avenue when he was approached by an unknown attacker who walked up to him and fired shots, Quaid said.

Children and Guns

He was hit in the left foot, and he was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, Quaid said.

About 2:20 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Vernon Avenue in the city's West Woodlawn neighborhood, three men were wounded, Quaid said. The victims, 31, 26 and 30, were standing outside when one or two gunmen opened fire from across the street, Quaid said. The 31-year-old was the most seriously wounded. He was struck multiple times and was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. The 26-year-old was hit in both legs, and his condition has stabilized, also at Stroger. The 30-year-old was struck in the left leg, according to Quaid, who said he was in good condition at the University Of Chicago Medical Center. The three men are documented gang members, said Quaid. No arrests have been made. Chicago Fire Department spokesman Joe Roccasalva confirmed the victims were taken by ambulances to the hospital. At 3:45 p.m. the area was quiet except for a few police officers who remained on the scene, centered around a 2-story brownstone with its front door, and first and second story windows boarded up. As of about 4:30 p.m. officers moved to another home in the same block. It's a three-flat that has been cordoned off with yellow and red tape. Officers have found 20 shell casings scattered outside the home and into the middle of the street. The area is heavily residential and police tape also encircled about five homes in the middle of the 6200 block of South Vernon Avenue. Passersby arriving home from work said they had not heard anything about what happened. 2 Investigators: Pastor Says Chicago Cops

Beat Her During Road Rage Incident

A

woman with two small children in her car tried to pull into her driveway. That simple task ended with Chicago police officers pointing a gun to her head and charging her with attempted murder. CBS 2’s Dave Savini has police video, the 9-1-1 calls and complaints against these officers.

In 2013, Rev. Catherine Brown found herself in a violent struggle with Chicago police, which was caught on squad car cameras. It began when Brown was driving down her alley heading to her driveway. Around a bend she says she saw a squad car speeding towards her without lights or sirens. “It’s a blessing I did blow my horn,” says Brown, who thought the police car could have hit her. She says Officer Michelle Morsi Murphy and Officer Jose Lopez were blocking her driveway. Morsi Murphy jumped out of the squad car yelled with profanity, ordering her to move her civilian vehicle. “It startled me,” Brown says. “I reached for my license … The other officer takes the gun and points it at the front of my head.” Brown called 9-1-1 repeatedly. Those tapes reveal she felt

Police smirking as Rev. Catherine Brown is abused threatened and in danger. She repeatedly asks for a lieutenant and police to come and help. Her daughters’ screams can be heard on the calls.

Georgia Brown, the oldest sibling, was eight at the time and says she was afraid of the officers. “They might shoot us and kill us,” she says. Instead of waiting for a supervisor, Brown says the officers forced her door open. Terrified, she drove backwards out of the alley, hoping neighbors might help. “Now she’s chasing me with the car. I come to a complete stop, and then she takes the car and rams it into me,” Brown says. Her children were in the car at the time of the impact, she says. On the video, Brown is seen screaming — she says for neighbors and witnesses. Officer Morsi Murphy pepper sprays her and it hits her baby, too. Officer Lopez laughs. Then Morsi Murphy gets on top of a parked car and draws her gun and points it at Brown. Another officer strikes the car with a metal wand. Brown is taken down and dragged from the car. She describes what happened next. They “Beat me down to my underwear, pulled my skirt off me,” Brown says. “They beat me with the sticks and hit me with their boots in my head.” She was scared to death,” Brown’s attorney, Ed Fox, says. He represents Brown against the officers, who have racked up many other complaints. The Citizens Police Data Project shows Morsi Murphy with 19 complaints and 21 for Lopez“... When you have that many complaints, it should alert the police department something’s wrong,” Fox says. Says Brown: “I got treated like an animal.” Brown was charged with attempted murder because Morsi Murphy claimed Brown had dragged her. Brown was acquitted, but she was convicted of reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, for driving in reverse. She is appealing the conviction. 29

Police Beat Woman Pastor in Chicago Street

A Chicago Police spokesperson declined to discuss the case, citing the pending litigation. “Reaffirming our commitment to accountability and integrity is paramount in our efforts to rebuild trust between police officers and communities,” the spokesperson said in a prepared statement. “Since there is pending litigation in this case, CPD is not able to comment on specifics. However, we take allegations of excessive force and discourtesy very seriously. These matters are thoroughly investigated by the Independent Review Authority and individuals are held accountable when wrongdoing is discovered.”

‘Chicago Police Union Hires Jason Van Dyke Killer of Laquan McDonald Shot 16-times in Back’ The Chicago police unions says it has hired as a janitor the officer charged with firstdegree murder in the fatal shooting of a black teenager. Dean Angelo, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago, says the union hired Jason Van Dyke about three week ago. Van Dyke is accused of shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014. The shooting was captured on squad-car video and has prompted investigations, including a federal civil rights probe of the Chicago Police Department Angelo says Van Dyke, who has been suspended from the department, is in a “very difficult situation, financially,” Angelo says the union would do the same for any Chicago officer.

‘Fentanyl Deaths Spike in Chicago Area’ ‘Get High and Die’ Chicago area public health officials are grappling with an increase in deaths due to overdoses of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid.

On Monday, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office reported a sharp increase in fentanyl-related deaths. They join officials in Will and DuPage counties who are also troubled by more overdoses related to strong new batches of fentanyl.

Now, a new FBI campaign hopes to education people about the threat. Fentanyl is a drug commonly used for surgeries and post-operative care. The drug is in the family of opioids, which includes morphine and heroin. At Gateway Treatment Centers in Naperville, patient service representatives take calls around the clock. Most of their concerns are opioid addiction. "We know treatment works, but if we can't get people to treatment it's really hard to help them change their behavior as well as their use of medicines," said Jim Scarpace, executive director of Gateway Aurora. Making the heroin epidemic worse is the use of synthetic drugs such as fentanyl. 30

Pastor Mitty Collier and The Year of Miracles

T

he United benefit Concert with the theme The Year of Miracles, featuring 12 pastors, was held this past Saturday night at the Life Center C.O.G.I.C, 5500 South on Indiana Avenue.

With what appeared to be a capacity crowd, the twelve pastors took to the pulpit with all the Lord gifted them with… for it was a concert but yet a ministerial-service orchestrated by God. Pastor Mitty Collier, who shared her vision for ‘The Year of Miracles’ with the 12 ministers, was not disappointing because the spirit of God showered the church with a powerful spiritual-flow of healing, deliverance. and persons who were set-free from various spiritual restrictions. Mitty Collier is a Pastor, Singer, Playwright, and Former rhythm and Blues Recording Artist of the sixties. Her discography includes popular singles such as: I Got to Get Away From It All, You Don’t Have for Find No Part-time Love and so many others. It appears from the crowds response that they remembered most of all I Had a Talk With My Man Last Night. We hasten to point to the fact that Collier often remind folk that she now has her talks with God.

Pastor Mitty Collier

Finances raised are for the purpose of Collier’s ‘Feed-A– neighbor program. She has on occasion had to support the effort out of her own pocket. This touched the hearts of the 12 pastors who came forth to help in her endeavors. And, endeavoring to help Collier, much of the funds raised went to the

pastors various churched. Those wishing to view more of Pastor Collier’s presentations may go to: WWW.ProbationChallenge.org for her ‘I Own it All to The Word broadcast. 24/7 and On-demand.

P

resident Barack Obama took his leave of the White House press corps Saturday with a sardonic blast at Donald Trump, the Republican Party and even fellow Democrats in his final tart-tongued stand-up riff for the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Trump, the widely anticipated target of Obama's barbs who was memorably skewered in 2011, was not in attendance -- a fact that did not go unnoticed by the commander in chief. "I am a little hurt he's not here tonight," Obama said. "We had so much fun the last time. And it is surprising -- you have a room full of reporters, celebrities, cameras. And he says no. Is this dinner too tacky for The Donald? What could he be possibly doing instead? Eating a Trump Steak? Tweeting out insults to Angela Merkel? What's he doing?"

President Barack Obama

Obama took shots at the Democratic race, telling Bernie Sanders, who was in attendance, "You look like a million bucks. Or to put it in terms you'll understand, you look like 37,000 donations of $27 each."
