Welcome

to Issue 1 2019. In this issue of you will see the thread of celebration as we mark our 200 year anniversary. As a stalwart of the business community, Cork Chamber celebrates 200 years of championing the sustainable economic development of Cork. At our annual dinner over 1,000 members and stakeholders were joined by President Higgins in marking this momentous milestone. We launched a fundraising initiative, our 1819 Fund in partnership with Social Innovation Fund Ireland. We hope you will support this worthy initiative in the coming months. We announced Cork Company of the Year. The finalists were chosen following an intensely rigorous selection process. We take great pride in the integrity of this award and in championing the exceptional endeavours of the Cork business community. Together with Vodafone Irl, we were delighted to celebrate the best of Cork business and announce Zenith Technologies as Cork

Company of the Year 2019 with Verifish, O’Flynn Medical and Wisetek taking the honours in their respective categories. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our guests, speakers, award entrants and especially our sponsors for helping make this event so special. We also look ahead to our exceptional calendar of events and training. We’ve a few irons in the fire from an international relations and public affairs perspective too, relentlessly driving the agenda of Cork overseas and at home. Yet against this backdrop of positivity and progress, Brexit looms ever larger. Business confidence takes a 4 point dip to 92% in deference. It is still strong, but shows a waver of sorts. Most tellingly, 57% are reviewing operations in light of Brexit showing a marked increase over comparable surveys in 2018. So Cork is preparing for Brexit. And if you do not count yourself among this 57%, I cannot urge you strongly enough to get informed and get ready.

Preside nt’s Pe rspec tive In 2019, as we celebrate 200 years of Cork Chamber, we reflect on our past to understand the immensity of our future.

Chamber 200…. 200 years - it rolls off the tongue quite easily but think for a moment all that has happened during that time. 100 years ago, as the Chamber celebrated its 100th birthday, World War 1 had just ended and Ireland was in the grips of our own War, the War of Independence, with City Hall burned to the ground 99 years ago during this conflict. 170 years ago, we were witnessing the end of the Great Famine which saw 1 million lose their lives and another 1 million forced to emigrate. The only positive result being the exceptional character and tenacity of the vast and patriotic diaspora, actively influencing the very business environment in which we operate today. 200 years ago, the Custom House on the Banks of the Lee was built and of course the Cork Chamber of Commerce was founded in a room overlooking Patrick’s Street. What then occupied the minds of successive Presidents of Cork Chamber as they incrementally influenced, collaborated and built the Cork we know today?

04

In 1850, President Lyons hopped on the first train from Passage to Cork. Light rail in the city actively supported by the Chamber from planning to delivery. In 2019 we wait impatiently for the delivery of Cork’s Transport Strategy. The much-needed detail that

matches our vision of a thriving city region enabled by public transport. In 1881, Charles Stewart Parnell became Chamber President, described by British prime Minister William Gladstone as the most remarkable man he had ever met. In the context of Brexit, this mutual respect born from persistent engagement in the most challenging of times gives pause for thought in the challenging weeks and months ahead. From 1883 to 1893 successive presidents lobbied Government to keep US and English mail routes open. There’s continuity to the theme. In 2015 the Chamber won a World Chambers award for its role in landing Tier 1 transatlantic fibre in Cork. In 1893, we lobbied for rail linking Waterford to New Ross. Today we must urgently assess the feasibility and economic value of High-Speed Rail to Dublin. Todays best isn’t good enough for tomorrow. In 1946, the Cork Town Planning Report was published. The beginning of modern planning. President McCarthy said that if they were serious about this whole question of town planning, they should tackle it piecemeal,

‘‘

We need absolute clarity and transparency on the delivery timelines for all projects in the capital plan and Ireland 2040 and we need them now.

‘‘

Speaking at the annual dinner, Chamber President Bill O’Connell reflects on the significance of 200 years championing business, the immense prospect of the next 200, and the immediate challenges that lie ahead.

completing it in stages of five or ten years. If they left the recommendations in front of them nothing would happen for a hundred years. Today I say that we need absolute clarity and transparency on the delivery timelines for all projects in the capital plan and Ireland 2040 and we need them now. In 1961, President Thompson got stuck into economic marketing distributing brochures to industrialists around the world extolling the opportunities of locating in Cork. A campaign that may have evolved ever so slightly but that hasn’t let up since. After all, …. We Are Cork. In 2009 and 2010, President O’Mahoney signed Memorandums of Understanding with Hangzhou Chamber, Shanghai Federation of Industry & Commerce and San Francisco Chamber. 2017 - The Public Relations Institute Award for Best Campaign in successful lobbying for the first transatlantic flights to Cork Airport. In 2018, after 199 years of championing Cork, Ireland 2040 finally acknowledged Corks scale and potential. Irelands fastest growing City Region. Endorsed not only by Government, but by ongoing private sector construction and investment

From Blackrock trains to transatlantic planes the changes in Irish life, business and society over 200 years are immeasurable.

‘‘

It is clear that we must display both the vision of those who came before us, but most critically their ability to deliver.

‘‘

But their significance will be measured in the fullness of time relative to events that have yet to unfold. Relative to how we shape our city region physically, culturally, economically, environmentally and socially. For Cork, as we continue to innovate, and our population grows, embracing all forms of diversity will play a key role in our success.

I spent 28 wonderful years in a company called EMC, now part of Dell Technologies. When I started there our idea of diversity was 2 fellas from North Cork and a woman from Dublin. When I left there were 42 different nationalities and 26 different languages spoken. I’m now in Apple for the past 2 years and there are no less than 100 different nationalities on the Cork campus. This reflects both the global outlook of Cork based companies and the global composition of Cork itself. It’s a reflection of the steady transformation of our society. But with a global outlook we must remember that we are on a global stage and we must act accordingly with both vision and delivery. From apartments and houses to roads and rail. From hospitals and cultural centres to bridges and public parks. The plans that are set out in Ireland 2040 offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to change Cork over the next 20 years but if they stay in print alone they are nothing but aspirations.

‘‘

Today I say clearly that the state must equally not say to the business community ‘thus far shalt thou go and no further’.

‘‘

amounting to an additional million square feet of office space and 10,000 jobs over the next couple of years alone.

The Taoiseach also quoted our past President Parnell saying ‘No man has the right to say to his country “thus far shalt thou go and no further’” Today I say clearly that the state must equally not say to the business community ‘thus far shalt thou go and no further’. We have the resources, the will, and the track record to realise our vision. Now I restate and reemphasise - let’s just do it, let’s make it happen. Together, let’s make Cork THE best place for business.

At our recent Dublin Dinner, our Taoiseach stated, “Cork must succeed if Ireland is to succeed.” Reflecting on our history, it is clear that we must display both the vision of those who came before us, but most critically their ability to deliver.

IN THE CHAIR

with Brendan O’Regan, Executive Chairman and Founder, Zenith Technologies To begin, tell us a little about you and your background I’m a past pupil of the North Monastery and graduated in Instrument Physics from the RTC in Cork, which is now the CIT. I enjoy all things maritime and spend a lot of my time on or near the sea. I also am a passionate motorcyclist and undertake at least one motorcycle adventure trip a year. It’s a very different way to see the world! I experienced tremendous change in automation over my career, from controls using pneumatics for computation to the current Intelligent Automation systems that allow easy development of highly sophisticated control strategies. The only constant has been change. Describe Zenith Technologies? Zenith Technologies is a world leader in delivering manufacturing software systems that secure the supply of vital treatments to patients worldwide thus powering patient health. We specialise in implementing and supporting Automation, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and Digital solutions that manage, control and optimise manufacturing plants to improve operational effectiveness. Operating across five continents, Zenith partners with leading Pharma and Biotech companies, providing performance improvements, stable and reliable software, reduced costs, & total compliance. We build long term partnerships with our customers and are focused on supporting the full system lifecycle. Founded in 1998, Zenith has 16 offices worldwide with over 900 skilled employees implementing and supporting manufacturing software to the life sciences industry. We deliver performance improvements, reduced costs, total compliance, and improved operator skills through customer partnership. Zenith Technologies is committed to contributing to the success of their customers. Zenith controls and optimises manufacturing plants across the full system life cycle, to improve operational effectiveness and ensure compliance. What is unique to your company in this sector? Zenith is unique in that the company is vendor and platform independent and can therefore offer a best

in class unbiased solution to the customer. With our deep domain expertise, we are fully aware of the pressure points in the delivery of automations solutions. We offer leading edge solutions that are technically robust and supportable throughout the life cycle of the solution. Because we have extensively Virtualised our business, we can leverage our capacity on a 24/7 basis to deliver true 24 hour working and rapid project delivery. We are also able to easily scale globally for multi-site and jurisdiction delivery with follow-on support locally and globally. What makes your company stand out? In a word, it’s the people! We put a lot of effort into the induction and training of our people in the technologies and methodologies we deploy. The Zenith Values of Collaboration, Respect, Quality, Innovation, Performance and Customer Centricity are deeply ingrained in our people. We also have invested heavily in global management platforms that provide accurate project management information in real time. This equips and supports our people well in dealing with the dynamic nature of project delivery. We operate with integrity and have a reputation for delivery without failure. We have been successfully selected as preferred suppliers for most of the top ten global pharmaceutical companies, which is testament to our expertise and delivery capability. What are the highlights of your work? One of the major highlights has been growing the business without external investors and using the cash generated to develop new business lines. Another highlight has been the successful growth and expansion into foreign and culturally diverse regions. Our first major expansion was into Singapore in 2002 and the experience gained facilitated the expansion into other regions such as India, China, USA, and Europe. Leading an organisation that constantly embraces change, both in technologies and work practices, is another key highlight. What has been your greatest business achievement and challenge? One of my greatest achievements was securing our first global preferred supplier agreement, when the company was quite small and faced

strong competition from international engineering companies. Proving that a small Cork company could be nimble and competent enough to meet the demands of major pharmaceutical multinationals, without compromising quality or technical delivery, was a major challenge. I have always cultivated an entrepreneurial spirit within the company from the start. This means that we have had a number of start-ups within the business. There is a director responsible for New Business Introduction inside the company which means that we are always listening to our customers to generate new ideas for services and business lines that add real value. The GE investment in 2017 was a game changer for the business and opened up new opportunities and technologies to us. What’s your business goal for the future? There in tremendous opportunity in the Life Science sector, as novel medicines are derived from the unlocking of the human genome. Manufacturing is going through enormous change and the whole area of personalised medicine is becoming a reality. Zenith, through its close industry alliances, is at the very forefront of supporting and managing these technologies. I expect the business to double in size in the next three years as a result. What’s your top business tip? The two top tips I have are: •

Embrace change and make it your constant -meaning that one never sits on one’s laurels and is constantly seeking new ways to do things and perfect the delivery to the customer, always striving to show value.

• “Stick to the Knitting” meaning that you stick with what you are good at and enhance that offer to provide tangible and real business benefit. This has translated into a sole focus on Life Science as an industry sector and development of deep domain expertise as a result.

Ce le brating Cork Over 1,000 business leaders gathered at The Cork Chamber Annual Dinner 2019 on February 1st for what is the region’s largest flagship business, social and networking event. The evening was a celebration of business growth across Cork and an opportunity to share our vision for the region’s future. This year is a huge milestone in Cork Chamber’s history as we mark our 200 anniversary. President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins delivered the keynote speech, referencing Cork’s vibrant past and drawing vision for the future. “For the first century of independence, your chamber has been an important advocate for the economic and industrial development of Cork, from the modernisation of Cork Harbour and

the construction of Cork Airport to the expansion of commercial education and support for new undersea cables.” “We need real regionalism with the capacity to ascertain possibilities and difficulties, establishing policy, make investment choices and be accountable to the people — that will be all the more important as we confront the uncertainty caused by the decision of the UK to leave the EU.”

Annual Dinner 2019

The sense of optimism for Cork’s future was palpable across the Concert and Millennium Halls as President Higgins noted “I know how important, vibrant and sustainable regions are for the health of our economy and the prosperity of our people.” Together making CORK the best place for business.

Pre paring for Bre xit With the UK scheduled to leave the EU on the 29 March, it is crucial that businesses take steps to prepare themselves, as best they can, for a ‘no-deal’ Brexit. In a ‘no-deal’ scenario the UK will become a ‘third country’ under WTO rules. Customs, Tariffs & Admininistration

Chemicals/Machinery/ Product Regulatory Issues

Once the UK leaves the EU and customs union, any import or export moving to and from Ireland and the UK will require customs declarations.

The Health and Safety Authority advises that businesses review their supply chain links to the UK, including sourcing of products via distributors and in particular for chemicals.

Businesses will be required to obtain an EORI number, which can be applied for through Revenue. Businesses can either apply themselves, or choose to engage with a customs agent, that files the declaration on their behalf. In addition, Revenue has outlined a number of ways that will help to ‘ease the customs burden’ and to make it easier for business trading with the UK. Customs duties will apply to goods moving to the UK from Ireland and, vice versa. Irish importers and exporters will be required to assign classification codes to their goods to determine the rate of duty. The rate of the duty will then depend on the assigned commodity code. Code classification will become a Brexit cost to trade that companies trading with the UK will become accustomed to. As the UK will no longer be a part of the customs union, additional administration requirements and resources may be required to deal with new border arrangements. Businesses should consider whether deliveries can be shipped prior to 29 March 2019 and whether extra supplies of key raw materials can be stored to avoid logistical uncertainties.

Brexit and Certificates of Origin No Deal Scenario •

We are informed that at present UK Customs authorities do not require Certificates of Origin for goods arriving in the UK coming from third countries and are therefore not likely to require Irish goods arriving in the UK post Brexit/’no-deal’ to be accompanied by a Certificate of Origin.

Companies in the UK may request a Certificate of Origin depending on their individual needs (re-exporting etc). This applies vice versa. Irish companies whose supply chain contains UK components may also need to apply for a Certificate of Origin - this will depend on the needs of and requirements in the country of destination. In addition, companies using a Documentary Letter of Credit to finance shipments may be requested by the relevant bank to obtain a Certificate of Origin too.

The following will be a concern for Irish business: •

Unless able to source products from an alternative EU supplier, a business may become an EU importer post-Brexit with legal responsibility for the compliance of the product with EU law. Where a business uses notified bodies based in the UK to undertake any 3rd party conformity assessments required under relevant EU law, this will no longer be a service to rely on post Brexit. Businesses will need to source a notified body legally designated to carry out conformity assessments in the EU.

Setting The Standard

Founded in Cork almost a century ago, Reliance is a 4th generation family firm with its eyes firmly set on the future… Tánaiste Simon Coveney was in Limerick on Friday, January 11th to officially open Reliance’s state of the art new facility on the Ballysimon Road and to launch their new partnership with Universal Robots. The Tánaiste showed a steady hand as he controlled a UR Collaborative Robot (cobot) to cut a ribbon during the opening of the facility. Established in Cork in 1922 by Horace Rhodes Kenworthy, Reliance was registered as a business in 1925. Over 95 years later the Kenworthy family continue to lead Reliance forward while holding onto the special core values that are so unique to the Company. From its humble beginnings trading from the back of Model T truck, Reliance now has approximately 45,000 Sq of warehousing, operates nationwide from 3 key locations in (Cork HQ, Dublin, Limerick) and exports to European and non European counties. Commenting on the partnership with Universal Robots Tánaiste Coveney noted “Reliance has set the standard for what everyone wants to reach and surpass. Because of Brexit the Irish economy will look towards automation companies such as Reliance for guidance”

Reliance is the Irish distribution partner for Universal Robots and is currently working with companies of all sizes throughout Ireland to advise how repetitive industrial processes can be streamlined, to reduce cost, increase efficiency and improve reliability. Universal Robots are the world’s number one manufacturer of collaborative robots and are in use throughout the world. Cobots are different to standard robot arms in so far as they are designed to work side by side with people safely in practically any type of environment. No special safety caging is required and they are extremely user friendly to use. Speaking about their new partnership with UR, Mr. Creighton said, “It is our goal to be the leader to identify, learn about, and introduce these latest technologies as they evolve to continually help our customers to compete and grow in an ever competitive market place.” At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos IDA Chief Executive Martin Shanahan has said Ireland will see more robots being used in manufacturing over the next few years. He said that the development of robotics will see different jobs being created, as opposed to them being taken over.

Reliance is Ireland’s leading authorised technical distributor of industrial maintenance products, automation solutions, industrial services and agricultural mechanical components. Reliance exclusively represents many global leading manufacturers and as a valued partner to our customer base, it is our aim to continually introduce beneficial new technologies to help our customers grow and maintain their competitiveness.

A UR Cobot cuts the ribbon of Reliance’s new Limerick facility with the help of Tánaiste Simon Coveney and Peter Creighton, MD of Reliance. In addition to the manufacturing benefits of Cobots, they also exhibit some impressive Jedi moves. Tánaiste Simon Coveney and Peter Creighton dishing out pizza cut by UR cobot

In addition, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) estimate the integration of robots in manufacturing processes will see 135 million jobs created worldwide by 2022. Limerick Grand Opening Over 120 people, including media, politicians, rugby and GAA players, were welcomed into the impressive new Limerick facility by Managing Director of Reliance, Peter Creighton. Rugby hero David Wallace and Limerick hurlers Barry Murphy and Oisin O’Reilly attended. The Cobots performed a routine with light sabers to the Black Eyes Peas “Let’s get it started” and another cobot controlled by the Tánaiste, cut his ham and pineapple pizza into slices. Peter Creighton and his team at Reliance showcased six UR collaborative robots (cobots). Cobots assist businesses to carry out repetitive tasks and their special collaborative process frees up employees for more rewarding roles.

Affidea - Time is of the essence Just under a year ago Affidea Ireland invested €2 million in the opening of a new Expresscare Clinic in The Elysian building that treats a range of minor injuries and illnesses that don’t require a hospital setting. Promising fast turnaround times, Affidea ExpressCare in Cork is open from 10am to 10pm, 365 days a year. The consultant led medical team cares for minor injuries and illnesses such as fractures and sprains, cuts requiring stitches, sports and DIY injuries, minor burns and scalds, eye and ear injuries, insect and animal bites, infections and rashes. Children over the age of one can also attend the facility, meaning parents don’t have to attend a busy hospital emergency department with an injured child. David Corkery, Business Development Manager with Affidea Ireland and former Irish rugby International has had plenty of experiences of requiring medical intervention. As he said jokingly, he feels that he should have shares in the CUH because of the amount of hours, days and weeks he spent waiting in their A&E

department. Instead of attending a busy and stressful A&E environment in the CUH, people can now attend our ExpressCare Clinic in the city to have their minor injuries or illnesses treated. This clinic will significantly benefit the Irish healthcare sector by relieving the burden placed on Irish hospitals by large numbers presenting unnecessarily to A&E departments in the Cork area. During the summer we treated a vast amount of sporting injuries and because our Expresscare clinic is directly linked to our diagnostic centre, we could give these patients the speedy and prompt service they desired. The fantastic work that takes place in a hospital A&E department should be left for the more serious cases but in Ireland we clog up our hospitals as people have no alternative. Affidea provides an alternative option. About 40% of our footfall in Cork to date has been the treatment of children. We treat children over 1 years of age and we have received fantastic feedback from parents who have used our services.

Earlier this year we had a father come in with his young son who fell off a trampoline – he had just spent over 10 hours waiting in an A&E department for a suspected broken finger. By chance, he heard our radio ad while in A&E and brought his son into us. We had the patient registered, examined, x-rayed and treated in 55 minutes, with a follow up appointment for one of our orthopaedic surgeons prior to leaving the clinic. In total we have invested over €25 million in Irish healthcare in just 3 years. We will continue to invest in Irish healthcare and have plans for further clinics which will be announced in due course. Irish people aren’t that familiar with Affidea as a company, mainly because not everyone requires an MRI, X-ray, CT or an Ultrasound on a regular basis, however minor illnesses and injuries are very common. Why waste your precious time in waiting rooms when a prompt and exceptional service is on your doorstep in the heart of Cork city. There are two things that are priceless, your health and your time, here at Affidea we aim to give you both. So Why Wait?

Vodafone Business Ireland helping Munster Rugby outpace the competition

Regina Moran, Enterprise Director of Vodafone Ireland, on their new technology partnership with Munster Rugby.

Munster Rugby is a team, but also a business that requires first-class digital support to enhance performance on and off the field. Vodafone Business works with organisations, like Munster Rugby, to match their strategy and goals with the best technology and help them realise their digital and connected ambition. As a small business that wants to grow internationally, but also an organisation with a lot of moving parts, travel requirements and employees based in different locations, connectivity, agility and mobility with the technology to enable them are essential for success. For Munster, they sought a leading global technology company to help them fulfil their strategic goals, which include growing the Red Army on a global scale and becoming the very best rugby club in the world with the very best and most connected fan base in the world.

26

How can Vodafone support this? This new partnership will see the rollout of Vodafone Business solutions across mobile, fixed and wireless broadband and the cloud to help Munster deliver results-based development

and performance and a people-focused connectedness. We understand that businesses are searching for communication service providers that offer them reliable and secure connectivity across these services.

Players, coaches and staff are availing of Ireland’s fastest mobile network with a population coverage of 99.6% and 4G coverage of 96%. The first to market with 3G, 4G, narrow band-IoT and a live 5G Network site for commercial trials in the Dublin Docklands, we are investing in Ireland and connecting businesses, no matter where they are. Munster Rugby will also avail of the very best data packages and access to our global network to support their regular international travel in Europe and South Africa. As with any organisation, connectivity and mobility are essential. To address this for a multi-location organisation like Munster Rugby, one-gigabit fibre broadband, though SIRO – our joint venture with the ESB – is being installed in Thomond Park. One Net Business – Vodafone’s cloud-based service that connects all business devices in a single call management and collaboration system – is being rolled out across their offices and training facilities in Cork and Limerick and for their staff who work remotely. This collaboration tool gives customers a simple, cost effective

Regina Moran, Vodafone Ireland Enterprise Director and Doug Howlett, Munster Rugby Head of Commercial and Marketing with Munster’s Arno Botha, Sammy Arnold and Tyler Bleyendaal. platform for the kind of anywhere, anytime teamwork that helps to drive performance and growth. Some of the benefits of One Net Business include the management and routing of calls remotely, the use of tablets and headsets to make and receive calls and running calls off a mobile network, if the physical line goes down. It gives everyone access to collaboration tools like, secure video conferencing and instant messaging to drive purposeful real-time conversations - so jobs get done quicker, even when people are working remotely. In addition, as we manage it through the cloud, there is no downtime when updates are required. Vodafone Business Ireland is excited about working with Munster Rugby and supporting them on their digital journey over the coming years.
