SHMUEL ASHKENASI
Violinist Shmuel Ashkenasi has performed as soloist with many leading orchestras, such as those of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, Berlin, London, Moscow, and Tokyo. He has been the choice of many of the world’s most distinguished conductors, such as Stokowski, Böhm, Kempe, Leinsdorf, and Kubelik. His recording of the Paganini Violin Concertos Numbers 1 and 2, with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra on the Deutsche Grammophon label, is still available after more than 50 years. In 1969, he formed the famed Vermeer Quartet and remained its first violinist throughout the quartet’s 39-year career. With performances in practically every major city and prestigious music festival

in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, the Vermeer Quartet achieved international stature as one of the world’s finest classical music ensembles. Mr. Ashkenasi began his musical training at the Music Academy of Tel Aviv in the class of legendary pedagogue Ilona Feher. He arrived in the United States in 1958 and studied with Efrem Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute of Music. He later won first prize in the Merriweather Post Competition in Washington, D.C., was a finalist in the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, and captured second prize at the 1962 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He is also a noted pedagogue and is currently a professor at the Curtis Institute of Music and Bard College.
PERFORMERS
Cellist Jay Campbell made his debut with the New York Philharmonic this past season performing the music of Tan Dun. In the upcoming season, Mr. Campbell will release a debut CD on CAG Records, appear at Carnegie Hall, and premiere new works written for him by John Zorn and David Fulmer. He has premiered nearly one hundred works to date, including concertos by Chris Rogerson and David Lang. Mr. Campbell has also collaborated with leading ensembles including ICE, Ensemble InterContemporain, and the Da Capo Chamber Players. He was recently awarded first prize in the 2012 Concert Artist Guild auditions. Mr. Campbell currently studies with Fred Sherry at The Juilliard School.
Cellist Lawrence DiBello has participated in several festivals including Bowdoin International Music Festival, The Beethoven Institute at Mannes, and The Moritzburg Music Academy in Germany. Mr. DiBello has taken part in master classes led by artists such as Bonnie Hampton, David Ying, Peter Wyrick, and Peter Howard. He has also played in chamber music master classes for members of the Emerson String Quartet, the Orion String Quartet, and the Guarneri String Quartet. Mr. DiBello received his bachelor of music degree from Purchase College in 2012 where he studied with Julia Lichten. Mr. DiBello is currently pursuing a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music where he studies Clive Greensmith.
Violinist Francisco Fullana leads a versatile career. He is a part of the acclaimed SHUFFLE Concert Ensemble and the concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio. Highlight performances this season include concerto performances with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel and a tour in Spain with the Extremadura Symphony. As a chamber musician, he is a participant in the Marlboro Music Festival and has performed with members of the Guarneri, Juilliard, Cleveland, and Takács quartets. In 2006, he won the National “Pablo de Sarasate” Competition. Mr. Fullana currently studies under Midori Goto at the University of Southern California. He plays on a 1679 Pietro Guarneri de Mantua, generously on loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago. French violinist Chloé Kiffer was born to a family of musicians and started playing the violin at the age of six. She entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Paris at the age of 15 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in violin performance. She earned an artist diploma after graduating the Hochschule für Musik Saar in Germany. Ms. Kiffer has won several awards including first prize with top honors at the Bundeswettbewerb Jugend Musiziert in Germany, second prize in the international violin competition Yang Dang in China in 2004, and first prize in the Alois Kottmann international competition in Germany in 2007. Additionally, Ms. Kiffer won second prize in the Lions Club Competition in Germany in 2008, SACEM prize and the special award EMCY in the European Competition for Young Soloists in Luxemburg, 2010, first prize in the international competition
Richard Bellon in Germany, 2011, and the prestigious prix de la vocation from the Bleustein-Blanchet Foundation in 2012. Most recently, Ms. Kiffer won the 2013 Eisenberg-Fried String Concerto Competition at the Manhattan School of Music where she performed the Stravinsky Concerto in the opening concert under Maestro George Manahan in October. Ms. Kiffer has taken part in many international music festivals including the Kronberg Academy, the International Music Session in Holland, the Keshet Eilon Music Center in Israel, and the Young Artist Program in Canada. She has participated in master classes with Pinchas Zukerman, Robert Mann, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Lara Lev, Maxim Vengerov, Ivry Gitlis, Edward Grach, Pavel Vernikov, and Midori. Ms. Kiffer is currently attending the Manhattan School of Music where she is pursuing a master’s degree with Patinka Kopec and Pinchas Zukerman. Violist Danny Kim began his musical studies on the violin with his mother and transitioned to the viola in high school under Sabina Thatcher. As a chamber musician, Danny has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota, members of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Pro Arte Quartet, and collaborated in performances with distinguished artists including Joseph Silverstein, Peter Wiley, and Charles Neidich among others. Mr. Kim is an artist at the Marlboro Music Festival. Mr. Kim completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he studied with Sally Chisholm. He recently earned his master of music degree in viola performance from The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Samuel Rhodes.
Siwoo Kim is a violinist enjoying a blossoming career. This season, Mr. Kim gave the world premiere performance of Samuel Adler’s first violin concerto. In addition, he has recently performed with the Columbus, Houston, Springfield, and Tulsa Symphony Orchestras. An avid chamber musician, he has collaborated with Ensemble DITTO and Itzhak Perlman. As the winner of the 2011 Juilliard Competition, Mr. Kim made his New York concerto debut at Carnegie Hall with the Juilliard Orchestra. Currently a graduate student at The Juilliard School, Mr. Kim leads the Juilliard Orchestra as concertmaster and studies with Donald Weilerstein and Ronald Copes. Mr. Kim performs on the 1728 “Artot” Stradivarius violin from the Juilliard Collection. Formed in 2009, the Omer String Quartet has upcoming engagements with the Fontana Chamber Arts Summer Series in Kalamazoo Michigan, as well as a four-week residency at La Jolla Summerfest. For the past two years they were the Cleveland Chamber Music Society’s Quartet in Residence for which they performed on the society concert series and presented student programs in Cleveland-area schools. The ensemble has participated in the Robert Mann String Quartet Institute at Manhattan School of Music, Aspen Music Festival’s Center for Advanced Quartet Studies, the Perlman Music Program Chamber Music Workshop, and the Banff Centre Chamber Music Residency. They were re-invited to the Banff Centre in 2011 to give a world premiere of a new work for percussion ensemble and string quartet by Bob Becker. Since its inception, the quartet has worked closely with the Cavani Quartet, Peter Salaff, Earl
Carlyss, Mark Steinberg, and Donald Weilerstein, as well as in master classes for members of the Takács, Jupiter, Emerson, Miró, and Juilliard Quartets. The quartet was named the 2013 Grand Prize and Gold Medal winner of the 40th Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. As part of their award, they completed an 8-concert tour in the midwest last October and will make several concert appearances in the Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy this summer. The quartet recently completed chamber music studies as the Apprentice String Quartet at the Cleveland Institute of Music and was awarded the Levine Chamber Music Award. As avid educators the quartet devotes time to creating original interactive and educational programs. The group performs at schools, hospitals, college classes, and unconventional venues to engage audiences through the exploration of the string quartet medium. In addition the Omer Quartet has presented master classes across the country including for ensembles of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, Midwest Young Artists, and Valparaiso University. The quartet is based in New York City and currently studies with Samuel Rhodes and Earl Carlyss at the Juilliard School. Born in Virum, Denmark, Kirstine Schneider has performed all over her home country with the Affetto Quartet and other ensembles. Most recently, Kirstine performed at Carnegie Hall with the highly acclaimed New York String Orchestra conducted by Jaime Laredo. She has worked with members of the Tokyo String Quartet, the Brentano String Quartet, and the Emerson String Quartet. Ms. Schneider has also participated in master classes
with outstanding musicians such as Nikolaj Znaider, Hilary Hahn, Itzhak Rashkovsky, Benjamin Schmied, Gerhard Schultz, Milan Vitek, Todd Phillips, and Daniel Phillips. Ms. Schneider’s awards include first prize at Berlingske Tidendes Musikkonkurrence, Jakob Gades Violinkonkurrence, Jakob Gades Talentprize, Van Hauen’s Talentprize, Chetham’s School of Music String Prize and Chambermusic Prize, Odd Fellow Musicprize, The Royal Danish Academy of Music Scholarship Competition and prizewinner at Øresunds Solist. While she currently studies chamber music with Laurie Carney of the American String Quartet, she previously attended the Royal Danish Academy of Music, studying with Professor Serguei Azizian. Ms. Schneider is a student at Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Sylvia Rosenberg and Laurie Smukler. She would like to thank the Harby Foundation for her wonderful violin built by Carlo Fernando Landolfi.
At the age of 13, Chensi Tang decided to pursue music as her career. She has taken part in master classes with Kim Kashkashian, Roberto Diaz, the Takács String Quartet, and Pinchas Zukerman, and at summer programs in Ottawa, Guangdong, Qingdao, and Bangor. In 2011, she was awarded third prize as a part of Manhattan School of Music concerto competition. In 2010, she received second prize in the 5 Towns Music and Art Foundation Young Musician Competition. In 2003, Ms. Tang began her education at the middle school attached to the Central Conservatory of Music where she studied with Professor Changhai Wang. In 2008, she received a full scholarship from Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Ms. Patinka Kopec. Ms. Tang is currently pursuing her master of music in viola performance at Manhattan School of Music. Following these studies, she is applying for an Artist Diploma.
