Top Ten Reasons to Belong to the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches Reason #5 – Digital Access The Chamber website, digital publications and social media presence all work together to create more visibility for Chamber members. They offer a variety of communication tools and, with the addition of the Chamber app, members receive even more assistance using digital media to get their message out and establish their presence in the virtual world. • Chamber Website www.palmbeaches.org Resident and visitor information, membership directories, and Chamber and community highlights offer visitors to the website access to a wide array of information. • Digital Publications The Chamber’s publications are all available in a digital format on the Chamber website; current as well as archived issues. • Digital Newsletters Both the weekly newsletter, Chamber Update, and the monthly newsletter, E -Business Watch, are available digitally. Articles on key business issues and trends, upcoming events, new member listings and special announcements all come to members via email. • Social Media With a strong presence in on-line and internet communities, the Chamber represents its members and encourages interaction and business development via social media. • Our Members Are Hiring A monthly communication from the Chamber, members are invited to submit job opportunities for this email sent to all Chamber members, community leaders and elected officials. These are often forwarded to other business contacts and have resulted in www.palmbeaches.org

many members filling positions with quality candidates. • Text Message Notifications Receive a message directly to your phone reminding you of important Chamber events. • Chamber App The newest digital media addition, our Chamber app, puts invaluable information directly into the hands of residents, visitors and Chamber members. The Chamber also offers training to be sure your business has the advantages provided by digital media. Networking for members in related industries is provided by the Science & Technology Committee and their projects and events.

Investing for Professional Women On Thursday, April 12, Jon Arnold, president of the J. Arnold Wealth Management Company, addressed the Chamber’s Women in Business Committee. His discussion focused on what successful investors do that the unsuccessful don’t. The committee meets on the second Thursday of the month, at 11:45 a.m. in the Chamber Board Room. Mix it Up Italian Style It was a perfect evening to network “al fresco” on the patio at Vic and Angelo’s in PGA Commons East, located in Palm Beach Gardens, at the Chamber’s March Mixer. Vic & Angelo’s is a modern day ‘enoteca’ (Italian for wine bar), which is a traditional part of the dining scene in Italy. The menu features authentic coal oven pizza, homemade pasta and a full dinner menu. Diners can expect the freshest ingredients, knowledgeable, friendly staff and a modern yet inviting design. Attendees dined on Vic and Angelo’s signature coal oven pizzas. Special thanks to our hosts, General Manager Nick Pirrone, Managing Partner, Adam Robin and Director of Events, Jacqui Avello. Also, thanks to our Ambassadors Roy Wiley, Sue Jones, Joe Estes and Dave DuHamel.

“How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age”, a Dale Carnegie Training Seminar, will be presented on Wednesday, May 9, from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the Chamber’s Board Room. As we communicate today with different tools and with greater speed, Dale Carnegie’s advice and principles on how to Communicate, Lead, Build Relationships and Work Efficiently are even more critical for business success. Registration includes companion book and continental breakfast. Space is limited, so register early - $30 for Chamber members in advance and $50 for non-members at www. palmbeaches.org. www.palmbeaches.org

Add Movie Magic to Your PowerPoint Presentations

Anybody who has used – or sat through – a PowerPoint presentation knows how easy it is to get carried away with the program’s many bells and whistles. Nobody wants to look at a presentation that’s packed to the gills with extraneous whooshing sounds, animated stick figures, and garishly colored charts. However, PowerPoint offers one capability you might want to take advantage of: video. Let’s say you’re doing a presentation for a prospective client. Along with your slides about the services you offer, you might want to include a collection of video testimonials from satisfied customers. Here’s how you do it: 1. Make the video and save it in a commonly used video format such as AVI, MPEG, or WMV. This will ensure that the presentation will successfully play, regardless of what kind of computer you’re using. 2. Save the video in the same folder as your presentation. In the presentation, go to the slide where you want the video to play. If you’re in PowerPoint 2003, go to the Insert menu, select Movies and Sounds, select From File, and choose the movie you want. Using PowerPoint 2007, you have two options: If the slide layout includes a content placeholder, click the Insert Movie button in the placeholder, or you can click the Movie button in the Media Clips group, which is located on the Insert tab The 2010 version of PowerPoint changes the name of the button from “Movie” to “Video,” but essentially works the same. 3. Whether you’re using the 2003, 2007, or the 2010 version, you’ll be prompted to specify whether you want the video to play automatically or only when you’ve manually clicked it. And that’s it! One important thing to remember: unlike pictures or drawings, videos are not actually embedded in presentations. They’re linked files. The presentation has to know where to “look” when

www.palmbeaches.org

you ask it to play the video, and if you move the video after you set up the link in the presentation, PowerPoint won’t know where to find the original video. So make sure the video is stored in a logical place before you link it. The most logical place, of course, is in the same folder as the presentation itself – thus Step #2 above. Keeping all relevant files in the same place also makes for easy copying if you need to save the presentation to a CD or USB drive.
