Trustee Happenings The Trustee program was designed for top-level member executives to network with their peers and high profile speakers in a relaxed and informal forum. These networking opportunities create business alliances that contribute to the growth and development of member companies. They meet for presentations from local, state and national leaders regarding issues impacting the business community in the Palm Beaches. The program allows them to gain access to the speakers, build relationships and exchange ideas and information regarding those issues. If you are interested in learning more about the Trustee program, please contact Kelly Fanelli at kfanelli@palmbeaches.org. Catherine Rampell, business writer for the New York Times, addressed a Trustee luncheon on October 3. Rampell was the founding editor of Economix Blog at the Times, which received national awards. Her comments and discussion focused on national business and political issues.

Congressman Tom Rooney addressed a meeting of the Chamber Trustees at a lunch held at Ruth’s Chris Steak House @ CityPlace. Rooney updated the business men and women in attendance regarding economic issues and recent developments in foreign affairs. www.palmbeaches.org

Craig Miller, former CEO of Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and Republican candidate for United States Senate, spoke to the Chamber Trustees recently. Miller touted his business experience as a strong asset in his campaign for the Senate. He also explained aspects of his program to create a fairer and flatter tax system.

October Health Care Committee Meeting The Health Care Committee held its October 18, 2011 meeting in the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches boardroom. Our lunch sponsor, Manero’s Restaurant and Catering, provided the attendees with a great lunch of their signature specialties. Lara Colton of The Palm Beach Post provided a timely and informative presentation on “The Market that Won’t Grow Old – Senior Health Care in Palm Beach County”. Lara provided the attendees with information from the 2011 Scarborough Report, looking at the similarities and differences between “Boomer Seniors” aged 55-69, and “Senior Seniors, aged 70 plus, starting with their general demographics, the concentration of population in south county but increasing growth in other portions of the county, and information on different forms of media consumption. Among the surprising information shared is that while “Boomer Seniors” share very similar internet usage patterns to the younger adult population at 78%, even “Senior Seniors” are engaged with the internet at 49%, and their usage of tools and sites are very similar. Of course, as the “Boomer Seniors” continue to age into “Senior Seniors” the latter’s usage will continue to grow. Also, the “Boomer Seniors” are making important decisions not only about their own care, but frequently their aging parents as well. Lara also shared information on how different mediums, including television, radio and print are consumed by these groups, and the effect it has on targeting advertising. Attendees were given a thumb drive with the entire presentation, along with other useful information from The Post, and a greater understanding of the future direction of marketing for the health care industry in our county.
