A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMITTEE Good morning sports fans and welcome back to the University of Birmingham Hockey Club for the 2023/24 season. After a successful season last year, we are raring to get going again. With performance squads beginning pre-season almost six weeks ago, it’s an exciting year to be a Lion. As last year, our Women’s 1XI will be competing in the Vitality England Hockey Premier League, our Men’s 1XI competing in Division 1 North and both our Women’s and Men’s 2XI competing within the Midlands Conference. This season sees the addition of plenty of fresh faces around the club, most notably the new director of hockey Mark Moss (“Mossy”) joining us from Stourport Hockey Club and Malvern College. Mossy takes over from Chris Davis who did a fantastic job managing a transitional period for our club last year. Chris remains with us this season taking on the role as the lead for the men’s performance program. We are delighted to have Mossy on board joining the familiar faces of Richard Chambers, Gurdip Sandhu and Mo Samak. The coaching team combined bring a wealth of knowledge and we are excited to see what the season holds. Across the club last season, we achieved five promotions with our Women’s 4XI taking home the accolade of team of the year having won the treble consisting of their weekend league alongside the BUCS league and BUCS cup. We are hoping to continue upon these successes in both the weekend leagues and BUCS this year. With an influx of new players and returning students all committed to making it a successful and hopefully winning season all round. We are excited to welcome new scholars this season who are apart of Great Britain’s elite development programme and they join current scholars who come from England, Scotland, Wales, South Africa, and USA. They join the lasting legacy with previous alumni who notably won gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth games on our home pitches. As committee we are excited for the year ahead and look forward to seeing many of your faces on the side-line of the “Bourney B” this year.
