Midula Restaurant
Academics Location: Burnet Woods, Cincinnati, Ohio Individual Project- Education Studio University of Cincinnati
6 The challenge was to design an urban restaurant that includes a greenhouse while overcoming the challenges of a narrow and steep slope at site, the noise from the street and the undesirable view across the street. The site is located at Burnet woods, facing Clifton Avenue. As a solution, the restaurant incorporates the North and South facing courtyards on multiple levels, taking advantage of the natural slope of the site. Restaurant spaces were arranged in a series of alternating U-shaped structures creating these courtyards that results in unique outdoor dining and garden spaces. The main u-shaped dining area is situated in the middle of the hill with a south facing outdoor space.
Furthermore, a banquet on top of the main dining area and a bar located at the bottom of the hill creates an additional u – shaped space facing the north. The services are located to the North side of main u-shaped portion of the building. The circulation, structural system and mechanical system follows the same path creating a U-shaped pattern, thereby reinforcing the overall idea. There are two main entrance pathways, one from the top of the hill and other from the bottom of the hill, which are directed towards the main entry. The main parking is in the top of the hill and supplemental street parking Clifton Avenue.

Film and Media School Academics Location: 29 Calhoun Street, Cincinnati, Ohio Individual Project - Education Studio University of Cincinnati
10 The design challenge was to originate an architectural design for the new School of Film and Media Studies at the University of Cincinnati. This studio was an exploration of sequencing of building and space, communication between mind and materiality with architectural communication of two dimensional and 3 dimensional models. Throughout the studio, spatial and compositional structures and designs are investigated to produce a well functional and spatial design. The site is located at 29 Calhoun Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. The north side of the space is a currently occupied parking lot, while the south side is a steep slope. The design challenge was to incorporate this steep slope to the design by minimizing the construction damage to the site.
The design’s focus was to incorporate an outdoor screening area. Proposed Film and Media School has four main floors which include screening rooms, media equipment rooms, editing rooms, classrooms, offices, restrooms, café, lobby, bookstore, computer labs, library, and lecture halls. The main media rooms are in the underground floor to avoid natural light disturbance. The main entrance of the school is designed in a unique way to overcome the summer sun and to allow the maximum sunlight to the building. The North side of the building is designed such that to incorporate outdoor screening. The façade is mainly composed of curtainwalls allowing the maximum daylight into the space and creating a very active indoor space for the students.

Childern’s Hospital Academic Location: Omaha, Nebraska Team Project - Capstone University of Cincinnati
16 Our team consists of everyone from the architect, the engineer, the project executive and manager, and safety manager. Structurally, everything has been designed to the code or above to keep the building safe and efficient for years to come. It consists of traditional steel framing with concrete shear walls in certain shafts with the flooring systems consisting of concrete composite metal decking. Due to the poor soil conditions coupled with high column loads, the foundation will be supported by drilled shafts that reach the bedrock. The tower roof was designed so that the helicopter can land safely on any portion of the roof. The beams run north to south and the girders run east to west to allow the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing mains to flow underneath the beams, while smaller branches flow underneath the girders. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing wise, everything was done with efficiency and space in the mind. Life cycle costs were taken into account for all selected equipment to maximize the space of the hospital and efficiency and life of the units as much as possible.
Safety has no excuse to be absent on any construction project and there is no exception on this one, especially it being a hospital renovation/add-on. Every safety concern in regards to hospitals have been researched and accounted for across all employees involved in the project. An updated estimate has given us a slightly higher, but also a more accurate final price. Going from the level 2 to the level 3 estimate, design has been solidified and the estimate has become very accurate. Our schedule gained several, more detailed line items in regard to design thanks to a design-build approach mixed with fast-tracking certain activities. The challenges given to us have been met head on by our lead architect which include a specialty facade, a green roof, making the building smarter and more efficient, and how to respond in the face of a disaster. Our scope includes site-specific safety, constructability concerns and mitigations, site logistics plan for all phases of construction, detailed schedule & estimate, and project delivery methodology. This project will cost roughly $250,000,000 and last 39 months with a fast-track paced schedule.
