General Administration Last week was the last of the General Council’s plenary session held in the General House.

Br Javier Espinosa, of the Secretariat of the Laity, was at the Meeting of the Fraternities of the Champagnat Movement of the Marist Family in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, from 3 to 5 July.

Br Ernesto Sanchez join Br César Rojas, Secretariat of Brothers Today, at the meeting of the International Commission of Brothers Today in the General House from 4 to 10 July.

Br Josep Maria Soteras gives a retreat to the Province of Cruz del Sur, in Mar del Plata, in Argentina.

Br Mario Meuti is holding a meeting with the FMSI team in Geneva from 10 to 12 July.

Sharing on our journey Cuba: Chronicle of the community meeting

O

n Monday 28 May, the Marist Brothers of the Cuba project met in Cienfuegos with Brother Antonio Peralta, Provincel of Santa María de los Andes and our Brother Provincel Hipólito Pérez. The meeting opened with a moment of prayer.

The morning was devoted to hearing information about preparations for the second Mission Assembly to be held in Nairobi and about the General Conference which will take place at the Hermitage next September. Br Hipólito filled us in on the news of the province.

It was a rich morning which let us keep in step with the progress of the Congregation and the Province.

A delicious meal gave us the opportunity to savour the joy of meeting and fraternity.

We consecrated the afternoon to sharing on our Marist journeying in Cuba.

Then : contributing ideas for the final stage of Mario’s novitiate, possible

scenarios for his scholasticate, exchanging information on our apostolic projects, concretising details for the next vocations meeting in July with the young aspirants to Marist life. We experienced the joy of seeing our our family grow and rejuvenate; we were able to

see that the Lord is accompanying us in our daily life and that he continues to surprise and challenge us.

Thanks to the Lord, to Mary and to Marcellin for the opportunity offered to feel ourselves brothers, heirs of a marvellous and enagaging charism.

New District of the Pacific Brother David McDonald appointed District Superior

B

r. David McDonald, current Provincel, has been appointed first superior of the District of the Pacific by the Brother Superior General, for a first term of three years, starting from 15 December 2013. In his letter, Br Emili wrote to the Brothers of the Province of New Zealand: « Your confidence in David will constitute for him an important support in the years ahead. We thank David for his generosity and readiness to accept this important responsibility when you are reflecting on your future. » The Marist Brothers arrived in New Zealand in 1838. The Province was created in 1917. At present, it numbers 94 Brothers in 4 countries : New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Kiribati. On 15 December, the Province will become a District under the name of « District of the Pacific ». This is the end of a process which commenced in 2011. The first District Chapter will be held this December.

International Marist Youth Meeting Historic review

T

he IMYM to be held in Rio de Janeiro from 17 to 22 July is the third meeting organised by the Marist Institute to coincide with the World Youth Day (WYD). The idea took concrete form in 2008, with the celebration of the WYD in Sydney. It originated in the policy adopted by Br Seán Sammon and his Council to have meetings with young Marists at the regional level. Such meetings have been held with the youth of Europe (Spain 2005), Africa (Kenya 2006), Asia (Philippines 2007), « Arco

Norte » (Guatemala 2008) and Brasil and « Cono Sur » (Argentine 2008). A meeting with the youth of Oceania was also planned for 2008. The same year, the WYD was being held in Sydney. The Marists of Australia decided on this occasion to organise a «Marist Festival», on the eve of the WYD and invite youth from all over the world. The then General Council decided to unite this initiative of the Australian Marists with its desire to meet the youth, and thus the first International Marist Youth Meeting was born.

Deceased Brothers

The motto of the Sydney meeting was the same as that used for the WYD, a verse from the Acts of the Apostles 1 : 8 : « You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses… » About 700 young people from the four Marist branches gathered at Saint Joseph’s College.

They were invited to welcome ‘new dreams’ and march towards an ideal. This was summed up in the appeal of Bishop Kevin Downling who, speaking to the young Marists, encouraged them to « change the world ».

Madrid 2011 The second meeting was organised by the Marist Conference of Spain, in collaboration with the General Council, in August 2011.

Representatives of Marist youth chosen from each Province met in Buitrago, Madrid. To motivate the meeting, the organisers chose the word « belivin » in rapport with the motto of the WYD : « Rooted in Christ, firm in the faith. » Nearly 200 young people took part in the Buitrago meeting. Other youth were hosted in three Marist centres (Tui, Barcelona and Alicante). All came together for the final celebration in Buitrago, on the feast of Mary’s Assumption, 15 August.

Rio de Janeiro 2013

One of the practical proposals made by the young people of Madrid was the necessity of organising international meetings which promoted cultural exchanges between Provinces, in order to share questionings and propositions relating to the life of Marist youth. Inspired by this desire of the young people, the General Council, through the Secretariat of Mission, encouraged from the beginning the holding of an event preceding the WYD of Rio de Janeiro. The Secretariat asked the Marist Union of Brasil to organise this meeting.

An organising commission was appointed which has been at work since November 2011.
