Abstract

Encourages exploitation and abuse: We all know that social networking is a product of technology and technology brings new kinds of crime. While many people use it for wholesome, ethical, and healthy reasons, there are also many who utilize it to abuse and exploit others, particularly children and teens. The convenience brought by the web has led criminals to understand that carrying out their trade is much easier and less risky online. The use of fake identities is one advantage these people have in order to be more confident in exploiting and abusing children. Whether you like it or not, large companies’ and corporations’ logos and slogans are essentially a mild form of mind control. They are designed very carefully by teams of designers and marketers to ensure that they will inspire trust and the desire to purchase their products or service. False advertising has haunted the consumer for ages. While some products may be shady, we, as the consumer, should be able to analyze the dishonest statements. People who are more aware of corporate companies, know tons of dirt about them. Being the geek I am, researching about a product before purchase is my golden rule. Understanding the pros/cons of a specific item will help you stay ahead and spend your hard earned money wisely!

10 Reasons Why Fu r Is W rong If you could just humor me for a minute, let me express why fur is wrong.

In the wild, minks and foxes chew their own arms and legs off to free themselves from traps. How horrific is that?

Rabbits are hung by their legs, twitching, bleeding, screaming, while they are electrocuted, knifed, and their fur stripped from their bodies while they are still alive. Bunnies!!!

The fashion industry represents corporate America. It is here to make you spend money on fabulous clothes (which I am a victim of). They are contributors to credit card debts, anorexia, bad body images in young women everywhere, for the sake of profit.

Teaching your children that fur is wrong only makes them to grow up compassionate beings.

Faux fur look almost exactly like real fur, and you don’t have to think about having something dead hanging around your neck.

Animals are bred for their fur, the rest of their bodies mostly get discarded, so they’re not even used for its fullest potential. And… you can honestly say that you are a compassionate human being if you just don’t indulge in fur-trim coats.

You can eat meat and still be against wearing fur. It’s not an all-or-nothing deal, so don’t let the hardcore vegetarians tell you otherwise. At least livestock get all their meat consumed and their lives were not totally wasted for vanity. Although I don’t eat red meat anymore so don’t even think about calling me a hypocrite.

Animals are not disposable. In one form or another, all countries have their version of loving pets. If you look at the bigger picture, animals are living beings, capable of feelings, sensations, and certain emotions.

Cats and Dogs are beaten to a pulp. And many of these are pets which have been abducted from owners in certain countries.

Designer label Hermes has announced that they are breeding their own crocodiles to meet demand for their leather bags. Go ahead and read that again. Chief executive Patrick Thomas told Reuters: “We are now breeding our own crocodiles on our own farms, mainly in Australia. We cannot face demand. We have massive overdemand. We are limited by our ability to train new craftsmen. Hermes already faces a major challenge producing 3,000 crocodile bags a year.” It can take three or four crocodiles to provide enough skin for one bag and breeding can often be expensive as the animals need to be kept apart in separate rooms to minimize skin damage from bites. In other words, this is all really messed up. But I guess I really shouldn’t be surprised considering the fur and factory farms of the world. To think that these animals are being raised for the sole purpose of being turned into $50K handbags blows my mind. Especially when you’ve got people running the show saying things like this: “The world is not full of crocodiles, except the stock exchange!” Hahaha – screw you, Hermes. 6

Burberry may be best known for its distinctive plaid, but its use of real fur is making the design house synonymous with cruelty to animals. Burberry continues to use fur in its designs despite the fact that leading clothing retailers like J.Crew, Ann Taylor, Polo Ralph Lauren, and others have pulled fur from their stores forever. The traditional British luxury brand BURBERRY, which has it is headquarters in London, is primarily associated with high priced clothing and leather goods. The hallmarks of the brand, which happens to supply the British queen, are the typical check pattern and the trench coat. BURBERRY portrays itself as being socially and ecologically active. They also claim to maintain high standards of animal protection. However, the foxes and minks whose fur is used for BURBERRY fashion suffer and die under the same conditions as other animals in the fur industry. as the queen would say,, we are ‘“ not amused .....Are you ?

Marijuana is less addictive and less dangerous than Starbucks espresso .

I hate Starbucks. Sit down, grab a three fourths decaf half nonfat half soy 185 degrees no foam two and a half splenda stirred Sumatra misto and join me on a little journey through time and space to a magical land of espresso and community.

“creating jobs for America” and urging politicians to “come together” and “fix the economy,” all this while they pillage and profit in times of economic turmoil and exploit their labor force, both domestically and abroad, from the green aprons in the trench to the farmers picking the beans to the roasting plant attendant. A landscape littered with piles and piles of garbage fettered by little green logos, never biodegrading and casting a pall of filth and waste over the horizon. A place where the customers, in the eyes of the corporation, are not patrons of their business or even people but transactions, units, profit margins and, if the barista spends more than a few seconds dealing with them, a waste of time and money lost.

If by “espresso and community” I mean a global corporation that exploits and ravages all it touches. A place where workers both retail and production are paid slave wages, made to work for pennies on the dollar as the profits soar in unfair, unsafe and hazardous conditions, where lower and middle management are bullied, threatened and coerced into treating their “partners” like numbered cattle for the labor-slaughter and bottom line, where the shareholders openly extoll their hideous and vile I’m not going to lie. I pretty much hate Starbucks. opinions of our fellow man and, most especially, the very people who have made them rich- the baristas. To wit, though, many people- partners and customers alike- maintain a love/hate relationship with the A wonderful place where the small businesses and company. For certain, there are aspects on the employee independent cafes that gave our neighborhoods and side of things that make the job a rewarding experience: 17 towns such a unique flavor are forced out of business the people they meet and bond with, the joy of doing in favor of overpriced, oversugared and ultimately a great job, the knowledge and the experience. That unhealthy and uncreative options while the CEO and being said, customers do love a familiar, friendly face his fellows flash toothy smiles and speak honeyed behind the counter, especially given the amount of words about “healing the nation” and “creating jobs for passion and blood and sweat and toil baristas put into America” and urging politicians to “come together” and their work regardless of the conditions forced upon them. There’s always some good to take with the bad.

High Calories Drinks

There’s something hypnotically reassuring about the place from the placidly smiling mermaid on the logo to the cute barista who has your order ready by the time you get to the front of the line. But while the coffeehouse chain is famous for its laid-back vibe, you may not feel as relaxed once you learn these unnerving details about the nutritional content of some Starbucks favorites. So how do you know what’s safe to order? There are a few easy ways to avoid sipping enough calories to please a hummingbird on a sugar bender: for starters, steer clear of items that leap out as especially decadent. If the term “Caramel Brûlée” is in the name, you know you’re not doing your waistline any favors. If you sometimes indulge in these little luxuries, however, you may not be prepared for exactly how badly they stack up nutritionally when we compare them to a Snickers bar or even a bacon cheeseburger!

As consumers and lovers of coffee, one thing we can do is say “No Thank You to Starbucks. If you love orangutans and elephants more than pastries, then pass on the pastries until Starbucks changes their recipes to exclude palm oil or at the very least uses a sustainable source. Decimation of the rainforest is catastrophic for local and indigenous peoples, animals, plants, and, in particular, orangutans and elephants.

Starbucks: Stop selling baked goods containing palm oil!

22

April 13 Over 50,000 orangutans have already died as a result of deforestation due to palm oil production in the last two decades. The majority of palm oil production 80 percent occurs in Indonesia and Malaysia, where roughly 50 percent of the original forest cover has been replaced with palm oil plantations, leading to the quickest declines in biodiversity anywhere on the globe. Every hour, an area the size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared for the production of oil palms, often in the form of monocropping. Some producers have made significant efforts to move toward sustainable farms, and some companies have switched to sustainable sources; however, World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) says consumers are purchasing only half of the sustainably-produced palm oil being manufactured. With this obvious surplus in goods, why is Starbucks continuing to use an unsustainable source in its baked goods, contributing to loss of orangutan and elephant habitat? As consumers and lovers of coffee, one thing we can do is say “No Thank You to Starbucks. If you love orangutans and elephants more than pastries, then pass on the pastries until Starbucks changes their recipes to exclude palm oil or at the very least uses a sustainable source. Decimation of the rainforest is catastrophic for local and indigenous peoples, animals, plants, and, in particular, orangutans and elephants. JAN 29 The Consequences

For most everybody with a computer and an internet connection, facebook is the first (most times only) stop on the information superhighway. Facebook is now the most visited site on the internet, no matter how sad that is, it is the truth. We all know that social networking is a product of technology and technology brings new kinds of crime. Behavioral tendencies and consequences: The impact of social media and social networking sites on the behavior of children and teens is very disturbing. We’re not saying that social media is bad in and of itself. The misuse of such technology is what makes it bad. For instance, there is the tendency 25 to conform to what’s popular without considering whether it’s right or wrong - as often seen in cases of cyberbullying. It’s much easier for young people to verbally abuse each other online than it is face to face.

If there's a "Like" button on facebook, where's the "Hate" button? Can you believe good things only happen to world ?

29

Everytime you decide to check your profile you must consider this. Everyone of your "friends" will know you are online and will thus decide that this means you are free to talk. Mind you they don't text or call or e-mail or just show up on your doorstep. If you have avoided using facebook chat, it is like AIM except that you don't get to use a cool nickname and your conversation will constantly cease because facebook thinks you are no longer online. And if you decide to use the internet for something other than facebook your conversation will either end or will go to another tab where your "friend" will send 3million messages all consisting of the same concept as "I know you online because your green dot is lit up stop ignoring me, I hate you."

30

No

I don’t want to be your friend

(because you cyber smell) Maybe we went to elementry school together, maybe we played hockey on the same team, maybe we got plastered and shared intimate secrets about the time you got tricked into a threesome with your sister, maybe we sat next to each other for an entire semester, but that doesn’t make us friends not even in the most lose discription of the word. In fact the mere point that I can narrow down why I know you means we probably aren’t anything more then incidentale actors in each others lives, so why are you asking me to be your friend? If we haven’t spoke in years what makes you think that this friendly request is going to somehow turn into a meaningful relationship?

Yes I will accept your friend request, because I am vain and get pure joy out of knowing I am cool enough for you to want to get my rantings via your news feed. Nothing more will come of this than we will both gain a +1 in our friend count and thus can spread our message of hatred towards hipsters just that much further than before. For that I thank you, but if you start clogging my feed with “check-ins” and farm-ville updates consider are friendship terminated. And whilest we are on the topic...

32

33

Having a facebook profile is like having your own personal reality show. And Yes, because we can only perceive the world via our own senses, we instinctively think the world revolves around us and that everyone else cares. Of course that fact that everyone uses facebook to look into other peoples lives just confirms this theory and starts a horrible vortex of look at me, ok, look at me, ok, look at me. 34

In truth your not important and no one really cares about who you are or what you are doing. According to Myma Deup, statistics show that each day the average persons facebook profile is visited by .2 people, or 1.4 people per week. Most of these hits are due to inadvertantly clicking on your name instead of the link you posted to the picture of your dog (and NO noone wanted to see that either).

1. Face to Face Connections are Endangered Social Networking Tween A huge advantage of these social communities has a reverse side effect that is also a big disadvantage of social networking: they reduce or eliminate face-to-face socialization. Because of the autonomy afforded by the virtual world, individuals are free to create a fantasy persona and can pretend to be someone else. It is hard to say no, be rude, or ignore someone when you are looking them in the eye. It's incredibly easy and quick to unfriend or unfollow someone or simply block their efforts to make a connection. Just one click of the mouse and your problems are over. Unfortunately, this feature of online socialization cheats people of the opportunity to learn how to resolve conflicts in the world outside the Internet and it could retard or cripple one's social skills developments. Tweens and teens are at higher risk because those years are when they are learning to interact with others or build and maintain relationships. A report from the National School Boards Association shows that of the children in these age groups that use a social network, 41 percent spend their time posting messages. They are not spending this time in face-to-face interactions with their peers or others nor are they developing the necessary social skills for future success. 2. Cyberbullying and Crimes Against Children Use of social networks can expose individuals to harassment or inappropriate contact from others. Unless parents are diligent to filter the Internet content to which their families are exposed, children could be exposed to pornography or other inappropriate content. The Pew Center, in their Cyberbullying 2010 report, states that 93 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 use the Internet. Of that 93 percent, 63 percent of them use the Internet daily. Such high usage increases the risk of their being victims of cyberbullying or other cyber crimes.

3. Risks of Fraud or Identity Theft Whether you like it or not, the information you post on the Internet is available to almost anyone who is clever enough to access it. Most thieves need just a few vital pieces of personal information to make your life a nightmare and if they successfully steal your identity, it could cost you dearly. A report on CNET reveals over 24 million Americans put their personal information at risk by posting it on public sites such as social communities. 4. Time Waster A Nielsen report explains that social networking can be a big waste of time that sucks 17 percent of our Internet time down the non-productivity drain. While it is true that some of that time is likely spent in making and maintaining important business, social or professional connections, it is also true that it is easy to become distracted and end up spending valuable time on games, chats or other non-related activities. Dorie Clark of the Huffington Post reports Facebook users spend about six hours each month on the site, while social networkers spend three times as much time on those communities as they do on other online activities like email. 5. Corporate Invasion of Privacy Social networking invites major corporations to invade your privacy and sell your personal information. Have you ever posted a comment on Facebook, only to notice an advertisement appear 35 with content related to your post? Facebook projects it will earn $3.8 billion in revenue in 2011. That’s not bad for a free site. If Facebook and other social networking sites don’t charge their members, however, how do they make so much money? They do it by selling the ability to specifically target advertisements. On social networking sites, the website isn’t the product, its users are. These sites run algorithms that search for keywords, web browsing habits, and other data stored on your computer or social networking profile and provide you with advertisements targeted specifically to you. At the same time, you may be giving the site permission to share your information with outside sources unless you specifically generate settings that disallow them to do so. Participating in applications like Farmville may also be allowing outside vendors access to your private information.
